Re: Fiskars for mane trimming
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I use the Fiskars "Soft Touch" scissors/shears. They are light weight, have big, padded, comfortable, spring loaded grips, and nice sharp blades. I also recommend the Fiskars brand sharpener to go with them - best one I have found. You can see a photo of them on Amazon.com at the following address - _http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Softouch-Scissors/dp/B00061OFYK/ref=pd_bbs_6/102-33616 13-8697731?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1186852810&sr=8-6_ (http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Softouch-Scissors/dp/B00061OFYK/ref=pd_bbs_6/102-3361613-8697731?ie=UTF8&s=hp c&qid=1186852810&sr=8-6) If that link doesn't work, just search Amazon.com for "Fiskars Softouch Scissors". I have just recently gotten my second pair - first pair is still good but I've lost a spring - after using them for 9+ years on my Fjords. I usually find them at Walmart with no problem. Re: Fiskars and Cdn Fjord Owners
This message is from: "Cheryl Beillard" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Yes Sue .. there ARE lots of Cdn fjord owners on this list .. and I, for one, managed to find a pair of fiscar scissors in the office supply section of Walmart .. I think that you might try Cdn Tire too? I found they work well but didn't discover any really spectacular differences between them and the several other brands I tried. Some of those manes are just so tough to cut. By the way, where are you located in Cda? I'm in the upper Ottawa Valley. And on the subject of names -- if and when my mare foals -- 7-8 days and counting? and if we have a filly filly she's going to be called .. get this "Valley Girl"! Mike are you listening/reading? Did any of you out there who actually live in the real "Val" halla think of this?? If not, it's mine!! And in future years, even if it's not a "v" year. My sister-in-law thought of it and I think it's great .. not that many "V" names out there that aren't taken!
Re: Fiskars Scissors
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I just had to check out SAM'S club in here in Fairbanks, Alaska and found the Fiskars set also, priced at $14.47, not bad for way up here. Too bad I just bought the big softouch Fiskars at Michaels for $18.95...But just had to grab this set at SAM'S anyway, will save for later. CAn't pass up a bargain! I cut manes on three of my four Fjords yesterday and scraped and combed off great bunches of hair. The Ravens have been hauling it off to line their nests! I was covered with hair myself, and had little bits of cut mane even on my face! The horses looked fairly clean when I got done, but now have rolled in the melting manure piles in the corraland look like appys and pintos. Glad it will scrape off with the hair, hopefully the corrals will be dry before they finish shedding! Jean in melting Fairbanks, Alaska, where it was +47 yesterday and sunny! Re: Fiskars
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have tried Friskars, but now use scissors that are designed to cut leather. They cost about $10 a pair at the leather supply store. When they don't seem to want to cut I spray them with my clipper lube and of we go again. The pair I am currently using have been in use for almost 3 years. Re: Fiskars/ Nancy's method
This message is from: "Jean Gayle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Aha Jean in Alaska I see that you mean you do not leave the black higher than the white and then bevel so that the highest point is black. I think that is what I heard about Nancy Lehnert that she does that by pushing the mane over and doing the outside. Fiskars or clippers? Re: Fiskars/ Nancy's method
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> NO, NO, I arch it to shape a nice arch over the neck, but initially it is cut straight across from one side to the other, unless I am leaving the black a half inch higher in the middle. Then I bevel the sides so it is higher down the center line than on the sides. ...IE the black center stripe is higher and it slopes off on either side. this shows the black stripe pretty well and may be a bit easier than actually cutting the white a half inch shorter. I still sort of like the looks of the straight cut, tho, depends on the season and the horse. Adel, with no real stripe (only an increasing number of scattered black hairs) looks best in the summer with a nice arched cut that is fairly short and flat from side to side. Then you can tell it is mane and not her neck! LOL Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska. I'm going to actually ride one of these guys today, in my little arena (No place else to ride with deep snow) Love this weather! >Jean in Alaska, you say you cut the mane straight across? Re: Fiskars/ Nancy's method
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I cut the mane straight across (one side at a time) and then with one hand push the mane over to one side, and then cut the hair that sticks out, winding up with a beveled edge. Is this very clear? experiment with holding the mane over to one side and see how the outside hairs will stick out longer, thus you can bevel them off. I usually dress up the manes this way a little even if I intend to leave them fairly blunt cut across. (I'm sure this is about as clear as mud! LOL) Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, ANOTHER +20's day, a year ago this date it was -50! We have had about 4 weeks of this balmy weather now! This message is from: "Denise Delgado" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> misha, fiskars are the best!! you can get them anywhere. they have orange handles and the newer ones come in different colors. just make sure they are fiskars. i did quinn yesterday after a break in the rain. he was sopping wet and my husband, ralph, said he looked like some sort of wild bushman with his winter mane almost covering his neck, sticking out in all directions. he shamed me into grooming. so out i went and i was done in 10-15minutes. this is with quinn, an almost 3 year old, who does'nt sit still unless he is sleeping or eating! poor knutie, my almost 8 yo. quinn loves to chase him, nip him and sumo wrestle him. but knute only takes s much! denise in mud-pie makin, mokelumne hill, calif.

This message is from: Walter Monheim <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Misha, Here in Wisconsin we have Fleet Farms and I buy Fiscars Shop Shears they are grey with a black handle and a orange safety clip, they are spring loaded and are very easy on the thumbs and hands, as I have bad thumbs and am able to clip three fjords at a time before I get tired. The springs really help. I believe they are around $16.00/$18.00 a pair and last a long time, We have 8 fjords that get clipped every 4/6 weeks and have been using them for two years and just started to use our second pair. This message is from: "Carl & Sarah Nagel" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Misha, the Fiskars I got came from staples they are orange for the most part (and grey, I think!) They cost about 15.00 per pair. They really really work! I was using regular scissors, and having the trouble you spoke of. Chip Lamb showed me a pair of his Fiskars Shears and I watched him cut a few manes. These are different from regular scissors in that when you hold the shears in your hand the cutting edges of the blade are level with the mane ... you don't have to bend your hand to cut. They do work on thick manes, I cut one side to the arch I want, and then match the other side up. I'm very happy with them and they are very inexpensive. This message is from: "Jean Gayle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Misha these seem to be the orange or blue plastic handled scissors you see in hardware store. I have about eight pairs scattered about the place and I have yet to have them go dull. Of course I have only one mane to trim, but what a mane. Gunnar is shedding so heavily, by the time I brushed and combed him I had only time for one side of his heavy mane. He looks a little weird but does not seem to mind. Now he is nibbling my fingers, not biting. He does really like the attention.
