PowerBook G3 300?

2006-02-10 Thread Van Snyder
Is this unit considered a Wallstreet model?

I'm more familiar with the Lombard and Pismo and am curious what a guy
should know regarding the PB G3 300?

thanks -

Re: Wegener Media

2006-02-06 Thread Van Snyder
I'll admit I'm surprised by this thread... I ordered a set of feet for
a Pismo and a trayload CDROM for an early iBook. A set of feet for a
TiBook and the CDROM arrived very promptly. I called them on the feet
and a set of feet for the Pismo arrived two days later. Very
surprised that they have apparently made trouble with so many of you.

 them again.

Wegener, himself, filed a statement with false claims with a Listmom,

It's almost as if Wegener is a relative of Karl Rove, as Wegener's

I believe, based upon first-hand experience, that it is Wegener,
  himself,
  not
Wegener Media's employees which is the problem.

Wegener likely has bullied his employees, too, much as he's bullied his
  customers.

In Wegener Media's defense, I did have ONE transaction which went OK.
  But,
this transaction was processed without Wegener's interference.

I'm 100 percent satisfied with Wegener Media transactions which do not
involve Wegener, himself; and 100 percent dissatisfied with Wegener

transactions which do involve Wegener, himself.

Just another data point on the continuum of good and bad experiences.

My question is this. Most of the bluetooth earpieces out there are

I suppose the V.2 earpieces won't be long before introduction so I
could wait, but the price is right now for V.1 earpieces.

The other variable I may have is that I only have USB 1.1 on my book,
unless I use a USB 2.0 Cardbus (which I have) and plug into that. So
not sure if I may get a bottleneck with the factory usb speed but
 that's another issue.

Re: Battery Time Left

Dan -

I have suffered this exact issue on my Pismo. Haven't figured out how
to fix it either - my next stop? Start from scratch. Also - I
believe my battery doesn't last as long under Tiger.. but that is just
a sense.

Please let me know if you remedy this - I'd be very interested to
learn what you find out.

thanks and good luck!

For some reason I can no longer get info on how long my battery has

I can get the info in percentage, but if I ask for it to be shown as
time left, it says calculating... or is just a blank, depending on
which program I use to measure it. I have show battery status in the
menu bar checked in the Energy Saver Systems Preference. I also use
SlimBatteryMonitor. Both show the same percentage, but no longer the
 time.

As best I remember this was working up till just a week or so ago.

 I have a 400MHz Pismo, 40G, 768MB. I recently upgraded to Tiger and
then 10.4.3. Could have been the same time. Battery is fairly new. I
was getting about 4 hours or so last I remember seeing the time. Is
 this a Tiger issue?

I tried running just on battery till it went to sleep (about 1-2 %),
then charging to full. Did this twice, still no joy so I tried reset-
nvram, reset-all. Still nothing but %.

Seems like its probably just something simple, but no luck with
Google or searching the Apple site.

 Any Suggestions?

 Thanks,

 Dan-

In iPhoto, when you select the pictures you want to send and click

You can use the constrain menue and do custom or preset. Then just put
in the size you want and select what part of the pic you want, then
hit enter. This will crop the photo but not reduce teh entire photo.

Try Graphic Converter for reducing photo sizes without cropping the photo.

Re: Clamshell CD-Rom problems

2005-06-10 Thread Van Snyder
wegenermedia.com has factory new drives for ~$70 and pbfixit.com has a
nice complete step-by-step procedure outlined. I just did it for my
sister-in-law and it went very smoothly. eBay might have somewhat
better prices, but when I was looking, they were ~$50 shipped for a
used drive.

Good luck - Laurent's solution might be the best, sinking $70 into
your clamshell might sting - depending on what your expectations are
for the future.

this machine? Any other way to load a new system besides the internal

I'm sorry, Jim, but I don't think there is any other way around it. You
can't boot from USB and since you don't have FireWire, not target disk mode.

What you could do would be to pull the hard drive and put it into an
external USB or FireWire enclosure. Then, use another Mac to install a
system on it if you can.

I would also imagine that you should be able to find a CD-ROM replacement
for far less than $100 on that model.

Re: Apple to switch to Intel chips

2005-06-09 Thread Van Snyder
If IBM did 'push' Apple out, they're added to a list of other notables
including Cray, SGI, etc. To think, some of us originally thought
that the reason we (Cray) had been pushed out was because they were
struggling to make yield/clockrate on the PowerPC. Of course, the
death of Apple's minivectors is a bummer for those of us with a
preference towards vectors. :)

They're going to have to have much better luck with the Cell/etc. to
make everyone happy. Should be interesting to watch.

There's been quite a heated discussion over on the TiBook list and
 elsewhere.
The short version is IBM told Apple to get lost we're in the G5 for

X-Box, PS2 Nintendo all use versions of the G5 making Apple a small
 buyer.

Intel is willing to work with Apple.

The only 802.11x issue I've heard of with recent PB's was the TiBook

plus added autoconfig stuff (2 antennas for 802.11x if you don't
 need the one for BT).

Is this b router, g on the powerbook slowdown a real issue? I don't
see much for google hits at this time.

I've had no problem with my b router and the Airport Extreme card in

Pismo w/Tiger - battery time reduced and not calculated

2005-05-19 Thread Van Snyder
All -

I had been running Jaguar and Panther (for a short time) and was
getting 3+ hours of runtime with AirPort enabled. After upgrading to
Tiger, I've noticed a couple things. First, it doesn't calculate how
much time is left on the battery. It will show percent, but not time.
This has always been very accurate, but now is stuck 'calculating'.
Second, it seems that my runtime is significantly reduced - probably
around 50%. I remember seeing a similar thread, but I remember seeing
quite a bit of confirmation both ways.

I ran the cells down completely, hoping it was just some
software/calibration thing - didn't help.

I tried resetting the PMU... no different.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Tiger available?

2005-04-29 Thread Van Snyder
I spoke with Apple telesales - The only thing shipping with Tiger
today are the new PowerMacs. Now they need to update all other stock,
with ref'd items being last. I'm almost certain my brother-in-laws
ref'd PB12 came with Jaguar installed and Panther discs thrown in the
box - this was shortly after Panther made it's debut. So we'll hold
for a week.

Re: Looking for an Airport Card

2005-04-12 Thread Van Snyder
JP sent this in an earlier email..
this is the URL:

http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm

you also might want to see:

http://home.earthlink.net/~kjvann/

good luck

happy clicking

TigerDirect has the Asante AL5403-XG 802.11G Cardbus 54MBPS adapter for 14.99.
If you order via TigerDirect through Amazon, it will save you a buck
on shipping. Based on the URL above, this card will work with the
Airport software in OSX.

Yes, I agree, the internal Airport card is preferred, but tough to beat $15.
Also, check www.expercom.com for original airport cards - both new and used.

hope this helps!

Pismo battery gauge (jaguar)

2005-04-09 Thread Van Snyder
All -

I have been test driving a Pismo over the last day. I'm curious to
find out just how stable the battery is . My 12 Al PB has a very
linear / predictable usage rate. The Pismo is interesting, because it
doesn't seem to decrease nearly as predictably - although, it has been
on for a long time. It almost seems like it will actually increase
from time to time.

I am using in largely just as a firefox machine right now (w/o Airport).

ideas?

Re: Replacement CDROM for clamshell

2005-04-05 Thread Van Snyder
I appreciate the feedback .. does anyone know what the OEM drive was?

Modern standard drives will work, but you'll have problems making the bezel
fit unless you use the same make and model. IIRC they need to be set to
 slave in a Clamshell.

pismo heartbeat?

2005-04-03 Thread Van Snyder
I am considering a G3 400 MHz Pismo. I spoke with the woman who owns
it and she mentioned it has a 'click/tick'. She was concerned about
it and the man who sold it to her (a salesman at her local computer
store) assured her it was the clock - her comment: it seems to be in
sync with the seconds.

Anybody have any ideas of what this could be?

Anything I should be wary of / know about when shopping in the Pismo market?

Irie.

Re: pismo heartbeat?

2005-04-03 Thread Van Snyder
Harddrive or fan were my two guesses... it is a 40GB drive, so I think
it might be different from original. No known issues with the
fans/etc in these units?

thanks for the feedback!

Usually, that kind of noise comes from the hard disk, which is about the
only piece that contains moving parts. You might want to consider another
hard disk, specially if it is still the original one.

flat adj.: 1. [common] Lacking any complex internal structure. That bitty
box has only a flat filesystem, not a hierarchical one. The verb form is
flatten. 2. Said of a memory architecture (like that of the VAX or 680x0)
that is one big linear address space (typically with each possible value of
a processor register corresponding to a unique core address), as opposed to
a `segmented' architecture (like that of the 80x86) in which addresses are
composed from a base-register/offset pair (segmented designs are generally
 considered cretinous).
