And the game presents it like they are cute little creatures out to have fun kind of. I noticed phrases like poor little q9 and stuff like that in the manuals. Hi Dark, Yeah, the original Mortal Kombat was very cartoonish when it came to gore. Nevertheless there are those people out there that flip out over any kind of violence in games, blood and gore, and think that we should not give such games to our kids. Consider, for example, the article Nicol posted to this list that basically said that playing such games was ungodly behavior, that games like that lead young children away from Christ, etc. The entire article was poorly researched, and I found the so-called evidence in that article unconvincing. Still it is a reminder that some games will always cross some boundries and will be socially unacceptable to some people for one reason or another. It isn't possible to create a game like Double Dragon or Mortal Kombat without getting some kind of negative feedback from the public. Some parents, psychologists, and religious people are very concerned over the amount of violence in video games. They feel the violent nature of games have gone too far, but there just as many people who don't care or worry about it. When it comes to a game like Q9, eh, don't worry about it. The violence is pretty tame all things considdered. It is no where as violent or gory as say Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and plenty of other games I can think of. In fact, you don't even have to think about killing the creatures in the game. It is designed in such a way that a person can think of knocking them out with the club or rocks instead of outright killing them if they have a thing about killing animals. dark wrote: > Ah Tom, funny you mention double dragon. > > now i think about it i was playing double dragon and International > Karate pluss at the age of 5 on our old amstrad computer, before > I lost the sight of my right eye, I only mention mortal combat because > I remember the huge controversy when it was released and the removal > of all the blood from the Snes version (well, it actually stil has > blood, the blood is merely coloured grey), which I found confusing at > the time sinse the violence in the original Mk is more cartoon gore > than anything else anbd not worse than you'd see in Tom and Gerry. > > of course, depending upon how much of a twisted evil psycho people > think i am now, that might influence what they think of children > playing so called violent games. grin! > > Beware the grue! > > Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Castlevania was Developer Time
Hi Dark, Well, I don't know if you have ever read Nora Roberts' Circle of Gods trilogy, but those books get heavily into vampire lore. In particular Nora Roberts covers the legends of Lilith --- who is sometimes believed to be a demon of some kind, and in more modern years used as queen of the vampires in books. In this case Nora Roberts uses her as the queen of the vampires, and she has several magical gifts and powers. So giving vampires some sort of magic powers isn't out of the question here. One part of that series of books I really liked was the magic sword that the newly crowned queen of gia draws from the stone. It was fashioned by the Irish Goddess Morigan, and possessed magic powers and abilities beyond that of any normal weapon. It of course comes heavily into play when it comes to slaying vampires during the great war at the end of Valley of silence. Those books more than anything has influenced a lot of my recent ideas about a Castlevania clone, or at least something like Castlevania. Cheers! dark wrote: I've never been an anne rice fan at all for various reasons, but I always took it that when Van Gelda talks about vampires having control over the elements, this could include the element of fire! In fact in white wolf's world of darkness vampire roleplay system, elemental control is in there too as a standard vampire power with fireball throwing at higher levels. this also has fun powers like various sorts of mental domination, control over shadows and teleportation. Hi Dark, Hmmm...Well, hitting a vampire with a chain might not help, but here is a twist. Pun definitely intended. What about finding some sort of enchanted chain which you can use to bind the vampire with? Basically, if a chain has been enchanted in some way you might be able to bind the vampire with it and keep them from breaking the chain. At that point you could kill them outright or maybe the game's story is simply to bind the vampire in chains for a certain length of time, or if we are talking a vampire like the Countess Elizabeth Bathory maybe she had been in such chains, but recently has broken free and is reigning terror on earth. That would explain, of course, why she was thought to be dead since 1614 or so. dark wrote: Well it has always rather confused me a litle. to quote a review of castlevania which I stuck on gamefaqs a while ago: "Simon has especially discovered that smacking vampires many times in the head with a big heavy length of chain stops them from being a problem, - Vampires are obviously very different from ordinary mortals in this respect" Grin! beware the Grue! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Castlevania was Developer Time
Hi Dark, That's the Countess Elizabeth Bathory --- the so-called Hungarian Blood Countess. It was said she slue over 600 virgins and bathed in their blood to retain her youth. There have been very few more truly evil and sadistic serial killers in history that would qualify as a historical vampire. So yes she would make a very good boss figure, and her story fits right in with known vampire lore nicely. I wasn't aware she had been used in a Castlevania title before, but still they mainly focussed on Dracula. So using Elizabeth Bathory instead of Dracula would be a bit different, and still have an ancient and somewhat historic vampire to fight. You have a marvelous sense of back story for games, and a man after my own heart. dark wrote: Hi tom. castlevania, and supercastlevania in particular, actually over uses skeletons a bit, sinse many enemies are skeletons with different attack patterns, everything from hitting you with swords, having whips of their own, just jumping at you or throwing axes. in the Treasury level there are even skeletons made of gold. It'd be nice to give some other undead an outing too, afterall there's no shortage to choose from. As to dracula, well Castlevania NEw generation on the mega drive uses Elizabeth Bathry (appologies if this is a wonky spelling), the extremely cruel 15th century countess who finished up being walled up alive as a final boss, claiming that she's a vampire trying to resurrect and marry dracula. As dracula's been around a long time though, there's no reason why this couldn't be turned around, in fact why not say Dracula was killed by Van gelda as described in the original novel, but countess Bathry has recently escaped her prison and is causing havoc. this could be interesting, both in terms of history and vampire lore, and in terms of a game having an intreaguing vampire boss who was historically significant, but not Dracula. beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Castlevania was: Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9
Hi Dark, Actually, Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula, is now in the public domain. So not only is Count Dracula in the public domain so are the other main characters in the novel. I guess what people need to be aware of there are two copyrights to think about when developing games or any other multimedia. The book itself is in the public domain. However, various radio broadcasts, movies, and of course any games using Dracula are not. So even though Castlevania uses a lot of common public domain enemies etc I still have to be careful how much of the original game I reuse for my own clone. dark wrote: Nice idea Bryan, however my point was that other than in the castlevania series, whips as holy weapons that have power over even normal undead like skeletons and zombies, let alone vampires etc are rather unknown, I'm not sure why nintendo chose to give Simon a whip in the first place other than it being cool rather like Indiana jones' whip is cool. As though Tom would obviously for copywrite reasons create an audio castlevania game which did not use the Belmont Family, or possibly the Vampire killer whip, why not include a more biblically logical weapon such as King Soloman's spear, the sword of Richard the Lion heart etc. I'd hope Count Dracula was enough of a general public or historical character (there was afterall really a Count called vlad tepes dracula), for him to be useable in the game, even if all the other character's from stokers novel, Johnathan Harker, mena and lucy etc wouldn't. Re: [Audyssey] replay value, was:RE: audio game question
The interesting thing I've found with Rail Racer is that if I don't play it for weeks at a time, the next time I fire it up I have a truely horrible few runs while I get the knack back. It's got nothing to do with remembering controls or tracks, it's more like tuning back into the balance so you can do turns and jumps accurately without overthinking. That in itself adds replay value for me, because there's always a few awkward races when I first pick the game back up before I can crank up the music and really enjoy it. It's bizzarre, makes me feel like that gaming session was actually slightly productive. It might just be specific to me, since even at my best I'm not as good as I'd like to be, but it's something I've never seen from any other accessible title. I'd actually agree, even about railracer ;D. As I said in my long woffle about game engines, any game which includes user created content has already great replay potential, and that goes for sound rts maps too. thankfully though developers are getting very good at this, so even a game intended as a fun arcade smasher like Q9 has the fun of random enemies to keep things interesting. Supercastlevania the dracula battle takes a good ten minutes by itself, as he has bags of energy,. four different forms with different attack modes, and! is hard to hit anyway! Let's not forget the fact in the original Castlevania game even when you killed Dracula he would come back to life for another go at you. Re: [Audyssey] Castlevania was Developer Time
I've never been an anne rice fan at all for various reasons, but I always took it that when Van Gelda talks about vampires having control over the elements, this could include the element of fire! In fact in white wolf's world of darkness vampire roleplay system, elemental control is in there too as a standard vampire power with fireball throwing at higher levels. this also has fun powers like various sorts of mental domination, control over shadows and teleportation. According to that book Akasha was the very first vampire, because she was the one the demon took over after what she did to marharet and Mekare. Anyway, that has little to do with my game idea though. One thing that book did do, however, is establish the fact that very old and very strong vampires can throw fireballs. In the Castlevania games Dracula's main attack was by throwing fireballs. At the time I thought that was rather odd, not a true vampire gift, but according to Anne Rice's books it is a part of vampire lore. So including that special gift in my own game wouldn't be that odd after all. Bryan Peterson wrote: That makes me think of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Interesting Bryan, and nice for a game sinse you could also plausably then include egyptian creatures like mummies, giant spiders, multi headed monsters (anubis would make a great boss), etc. though this might be getting a litle too close to Tom's tomb hunter games, unless a cross over could be forthcoming? ;D. Re: [Audyssey] Castlevania was Developer Time
Hi tom. castlevania, and supercastlevania in particular, actually over uses skeletons a bit, sinse many enemies are skeletons with different attack patterns, everything from hitting you with swords, having whips of their own, just jumping at you or throwing axes. in the Treasury level there are even skeletons made of gold. [Audyssey] Castlevania was: Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9
Nice idea Bryan, however my point was that other than in the castlevania series, whips as holy weapons that have power over even normal undead like skeletons and zombies, let alone vampires etc are rather unknown, I'm not sure why nintendo chose to give Simon a whip in the first place other than it being cool rather like Indiana jones' whip is cool. Perhaps you could set it up so that the vampire could be harmed by the whip but not actually slain. So the player could use the whip to get the vampire near to death, so to speak, then the stake or whatever weapon could be a special weapon which alone had the power to actually finish the vampire off. It might be kinda like the battle with Gannon in the original Legend of Zelda. He could be harmed with the sword but not slain. Once he turned red the only way to finish him off was the silver arrow, otherwise he would heal. It took my brother months to figure that out. Btw, if I remember rightly the whip's actual material changed with power ups, it started as lether, then after the player collected five weapon hearts became chain and correspondingly more powerful, and after another ten would become a long chain morning star with lots of reach. beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] speaking of Audyssey Magazine
Hi Charles, First off, I am glad that Ron was not dead or injured, and it is a relief to me that all he had was some tech issues. Second off, It was not intended to be harsh, nor a punishment. It was intended to recognize the facts of the situation. Ron was gone, none of us had a single word of whether he was alive or dead, and the magazine was in a state of limbo. If the editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal cannot perform his duties, thru his own fault or not, does the newspaper suddenly stop running? Of course not. So why would it be so difficult to temporarily keep making issues under the event of the editor suddenly missing without a trace? Even if we had been told that he was not going to be able to make an edition for a few months I wouldn't have a problem, because we would know that the magazine was still being made. In fact, I would like Ron to create a simple back up plan for these kind of situations, nothing fancy, just a failsafe plan for a temp editor, or just a person he could relate information thru for the sake of those of us who see the magazine as more then just some large post, but a foundational leg of audio computer gaming that I don't want to see extinguished. In fact, I would like it to last for generations after all of us are long gone because I believe it is important and necessary. Maybe others don't feel that way, but that is how I am. al "Charles Rivard" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Friday, November 20, 2009 11:24 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] speaking of Audyssey Magazine Even if it were through no fault of his? [Audyssey] replay value, was:RE: audio game question
Hi ya, Personally, I think the multiplayer games out there offer the best replay value for obvious reasons. Sound RTS is hard to beat when playing other humans, especially some of the more well thought out maps. Entombed is going to be amazing as well, Jason has done a great job on this one, and I hope the audio game community supports his efforts when the game is released, we need more well thought out titles like this. And although I am of course biased, I think Rail Racer offers amazing replay value, given the career mode, multiplayer tournaments, and the ability to create and share your own tracks. I won't kid you, it takes practice to get good at it, but its very rewarding once you start getting the hang of it. Re: [Audyssey] Castlevania was Developer Time
Hi Bryan, That would be Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. Hi Phil, That might work, but Dark has me convinced I'd do better to stay away from whipsl. At least as far as killing vampires are concerned. Re: [Audyssey] Developer time was: My Opinion of Q9
Why not both? Perhaps you could set it up so that the vampire could be harmed by the whip but not actually slain. So the player could use the whip to get the vampire near to death, so to speak, then the stake or whatever weapon could be a special weapon which alone had the power to actually finish the vampire off. It might be kinda like the battle with Gannon in the original Legend of Zelda. He could be harmed with the sword but not slain. Once he turned red the only way to finish him off was the silver arrow, otherwise he would heal. It took my brother months to figure that out. Re: [Audyssey] game modding/programming question
...not sure if it'd be so nice for a start... not to hurt any python programmers here but it has its own weird convensions, I mean you have to use indentation for letting it know about if and other statements, anyway if you do decide to go this way have fun. - Original Message - From: "Ryan Smith" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Friday, November 20, 2009 12:40 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] game modding/programming question Hi, I think a decent language to start with is Python. [Audyssey] AceFire was: Re: Game recordings site
Is AF 2.0 going to be free like 1 ended up being after a while? Ideas... knocking out guns? lioke a blow could make someones whip fall out of their hands or something and they'd eventually have to use punches or try to pick the weapon up again. and... you're not updating your development blog thingy... what. an update per few months? I was worried a few times. - Original Message - From: "Damien C. Most of it is ready, but to say it is supposed to be a major update the change log doesn't seem that big to me. I am still searching for ideas to put in the 2.0 version. Anyway, the cheats hotkey will be displayed here. For now, however, for those who are wondering, the cheats key for Acefire is CTRL+Shift+F8. As for the games site, thanks. For some reason I thought it was games.liamerven.com, but maybe that was my mix up because it was that kind of address on Asmodean. Thanks. While I am wrtiing this, it says nowhere what the key to enter cheats on Ace Fire is. Could you give that to me please? Last I knew, games.asmodean.net had been taken down, temporarily to go on games.liamerven.com. Now the games.liamerven.com site is down from what i can see, and the asmodean version is still not back up. Have I missed anything? Is it hosted elsewhere? I've lost all the recordings and would like to download them again. Thanks.
