Well... me and phil had talked about that back and forth like 2 years ago but nothing came of that, though he said he did have plans to release some of them. Back in what I presume to be the audio games golden age, new developers were sitting on a huge well of game ideas. All of the mainstream console games, board games, and card games were ripe for the duplicating into an accessible format. For a long while, I'm sure the only thing slowing anyone down was the time it took to crank the games out, and most of those were probably each their own first in gaming style within the vi community. That old well has dried up, and I agree, mainstream sources still trickle new ideas into that old well, but it is a slow trickle compared to the old days. - Aprone --- On Wed, 5/18/11, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote: From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [Audyssey] the spirit of game production - Re: bringsbackmemories - Re: Fw: BlindSoftware.comBlog Feed To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2011, 8:11 PM Hi Jeremy, Well, what you say makes sense. However, there is another angle I think we, as accessible game developers, often overlook. For instance, you are saying you pass over an idea because it has already done before, or too similar to a game in existance. That's true if we are looking at the wider community, but there is still nitch markets for those games. I myself am using Linux and there currently is nothing like Troopenum, Hunter, Judgment Day, etc available. So I'd probably buy it if there was a version built for Linux. It is the same case for Mac OS users who have left Windows for Mac, and now are trying to find games for Mac that are accessible. No its not financially as big a gold mine as Windows, I'm certainly not saying that, but my point is just because a similar game has been created before doesn't mean it isn't of value to someone. It just means we as developers have to look at the big picture and see where potential customers are. For instance, over the past month I've put a lot of work into upgrading my game engine so it runs on Windows and Linux, and I'm pretty sure if I compiled a version for Mac it should run on Mac OS as well. So if I chose to use my engine to create another Troopenum type game I doubt I'd get many Windows sales, because its like something they already have, but for Mac and Linux markets I'm sure I could make a couple thousand or so in sales from those nitch markets alone. Its simply the old case of supply and demand at work here again. Cheers! My browser decided to glitch and I lost a very lost post, that was probably a full page if not a page and a half. As one of the new guys in the community, relatively speaking, I debated even commenting on this topic. I wasn't around for the golden era so my perspective is extremely limited compared to those who have been around long enough to see the bigger picture. That being said, I don't doubt things have slowed down with audio game development to some degree, I believe that is normal. I do, also, agree with Dark that a well made game can still use old ideas. Recently I assembled a list of the audio games and tools I have released. I was honestly shocked by how short that list was! I kept thinking I had left things out, and it took me a while to accept that the list was accurate. The reason I felt like I had done more is because for every game/tool I've released, I have 2 that were only partially finished.

As for what happens if you don't kill the monkeys, nothing. If you like them, you can just ignore them and let them happily go about their business. I can't guarantee that the leopards and boars will feel as kindly towards them, though. As for a learn game sounds menu, I don't actually think I'll have one. Most of the sounds are self explanatory, and those that are not will be thoroughly described in the manual. If I end up with some really obscure ones that are hard to explain, i'll reconsider that. A game like Q9 needed it because there were things like the fields and the demons etc which are not real things, and their sounds could not really be described in text. Does that make sense? Well there is super football which is supposedly a football (socker), game, though sinse the players cannot dribble or tackle it's not really too realistic. I actually remember an old football game on the amstrad computer called match of the day, which i thought could really work well as an audio game sinse you only controled the player the ball got passed too, others would be ai controled, your own team to get close enough for you to pass, and the opposition attempting to tackle. This system though of fully controlling one player while having many others around moving by ai but detectable in that players field of audio view is one I thought would make a very good audio football (socker) game. I'm less sure of an American football game sinse I know very little about the sport, in fact I only know about football really because of generalized news and radio coverage over here which make it sort of hard not to learn the basic rules of the game at least. I'm less certain of a tenis game really, sinse I've tried supertennis and showdown, but usually these just seem to possess the same gameplay and rules as Jim's pong game and thus I'm less enthusiastic on that angle unless there are any twists a more advanced tenis game could offer such as different shot types and more than just sterrio targiting of the ball. Hi Charles That's not bad at all and probably more tight then what I had originally thought. Perhaps It could be a section of two or three folks and their experience and thoughts on game development. Wouldn't it be a cool insertion, in parts, into consecutive issues of the Audyssey magazines? It would be a good material source, and would also be entertaining for the old and new gamers alike, whether bringing back memories or providing background info. Hmm. How about a conduit for input from readers? That could become a regular article. Gamers could give recollections, game producers could do so as well. Something along the lines of Justin's recent podcast, in text form, from different game producers on what went on during the production and or testing of a particular game? The fun stuff, the frustrations, the emotions during game production progress? Basically, the behind the scenes enlightenment. Concerning the testing aspects, names would, if the legal contract is set up that way, be avoided. Well, your little bio crept into your message, and I guess my thoughts for material for Audyssey came from my original thought. I hope material for the mag comes from my ideas? I like having some idea of how things went in the past, so I can get a better idea of how they will likely change now, and in the future. I think it would be an excellent idea for several of the old timers to collaborate on a detailed audio games history. With everyone working together, I'm sure the time line of things could be fine tuned, and many specific details and events would start to surface that had been long forgotten. I'm not really familiar with your phrase hack it yourself, so you'd probably have to define that for me. I would have thought it was the same as opensource devs, but you seem to have differentiated them in your last post, so I'm not quite sure of the meaning you intended. I can't really comment about being the fastest developer or not. When I was just starting high school (1995 or 1996 I believe), I began teaching myself programming so that I could make little games and things. When I had high school programming classes, I was the expert who would know more than the professor so I'd help my friends with their work and we'd spend class playing my latest game rather than working on the day's lesson, haha. I went to the University of Michigan and got degrees in Computer science and Mechanical engineering, but I have to say that 95% of what they taught me I had already learned myself before going. All in all, it was a huge waste of time and money just to earn the piece of paper that says degree. I've always been the stubborn person who was slow to change my programming habits when those around me did. I always focused more on the end result, and how I could accomplish the same thing in a quarter of the time, by not changing my methods over to whatever was currently popular at the time. In different situations, being stubborn like that is a problem, but for the most part it has benefited me. Since it seems I've started writing a bio of myself, lol, I'll say a bit more. I'm sure there are people floating around who assume I only know Visual basic 6.0, since that is what I've written my audio games in. For the record, I do know C++, C#, Java, Objective-C, and a few of the smaller ones they make you learn as you go through college. In my stubbornness I just use the one I want to, depending on the task at hand. Oh crud, I'm sure I've just summoned a barrage of comments from other programmers haha! I've been programming pretty much every day since 1995, on all manner of personal projects. My specialty is actually vision systems, which seems a little ironic since I'm also writing audio games! Well I'd like to say that I think even though it's older, the side scroller has loads the VI can do with it yet. A couple of the old games would be and I hope I'm not wrong here would be say Joust, Donkey Kong, QBert, Mousetrap, Asteroids, [Unfortunately that was happening but the dev died out. Anyone able to contact him?] and many many more I'm not trying to say we shouldn't do our best to keep up, but there's so much that the blind community hasn't seen before in an accessible format. Who cares if it is a fun game from say 15 years ago. Myself my time was before the NES. In fact the last ones I can honestly say I saw were from the Colecovision. Awesome graphics for the time. I think any and all devs are great for taking the time to take the time and contribute the best job they can. Re: [Audyssey] Hey Gamers
What? spam? Well... in a nutshell... spam is just unnecessary messages, and in the case of email you may get advertizing, and URL's like the one michael sent usually will take you to some frod site just waiting to send your Credit card data to a hacker who set it up. So if someone didn't know that and saw that michael lost his job they could have went to that site, gave his/her CC details there, and then realizing that he/she got atad more than they bargained for. - Original Message - From: fatih fatihyuksek...@hotmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 11:17 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Hey Gamers what's that? -- From: Pitermach piterm...@gmail.com Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 11:01 AM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Hey Gamers Anyone else think this is spam? - Original Mes __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 5266 (20100709) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question?
Hehe, we're starting the same discussion a 3rd time, but I think it's worth it. anyway, also, windows ports are never going to feel like the originals. I bet that if you port cops, it will be realtime, gtc style... and the shooting range will most likely turn into a left/right affair. Once again, not the same thing, if you ask me, waiting for the right moment to shoot was a much better way of doing it. And to this day I wonder how the space invaders game played like since I wasn't able to get a demo of it, ditto for the rainy-day games. You know, this sucks. Sighted people are still able to get these old 90's dos games (either because they were abandoneware) or they are still purchaseable at a reduced price. For us, it's much harder. Ok, Jim actually offers all of his stuff, but I do believe PCS also played a large part in the history of audiogames and that people who weren't around then should be able to enjoy it. - Original Message - From: Matheus Rheine an...@bol.com.br To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 2:13 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question? hi phil. can you release the games that you're not planning to convert to windows as abandonware so others can play and enjoy then? thanks __ Information from ESET Smart Security, version of virus signature database 5266 (20100709) __ The message was checked by ESET Smart Security. http://www.eset.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi all Yes I do plan to put issue #55 out soon. I've had some complications however. Twice I've had to get the computer fixed. Also if anyone knows how to extract DBX files that would be wonderful. On another note yes I know I dropped the ball. Life Isn't always good stuff. It's been a bugger since the last issue 54. While the below isn't sent as an excuse for not having the issue ready I do hope there's some compassion. * I'm now officially divorced. My folks moved down acrosss the hall and at the age they are they need looking after. As Mike said I've had some computer troubles. So if anyone knows how to extract emails from a DBX file that would facilitate the next issue. It's 95% ready. I just want to include some of the older emails about game development and such. Hi The cops game will be like Tank Commander but will add the feature of you being able to get out of your police car and chase after the criminals on foot. You will also be able to enter buildings to seek them out. The way you fire your weapon in cops and the built in shooting range will be different than other games. It will be like the way you throw a grenade in Shades of Doom. And the city will have a junk yard so you can shoot at things like rats. [Audyssey] Instructions was Re: pcs games question?
Hi, Here are the steps required to run the games. This should work with every screen reader around, though some work better than others. NVDA works the best if you ask me. 1. Go to programsaccessoriescommand prompt. this should open a dos style window. I recommend maximizing it by going to the system menu with alt space and selecting maximize. 2. Navigate to the game you'd like to play. to change drives, enter the drive's letter in uppercase followed by a colon, followed by enter. For directories, enter cd followed by the directory the game is in. As an example, my copy of mobius mountain's demo is on the d drive in a folder called dg. Since the command prompt starts you off on C, I first have to enter D: (to get to the D drive, then cd dg\mobius97 to get to the actual game. 3. To then start the game you enter its name, though it may frequently be shortened. Since The full name mobius mountain exceeded dos's 8-character limit and would over-all be long to type in, it had been shortened to mobius. And after that, the game begins. When asked for sound driver, You can use the default driver, or if available go down to windows sound and use that instead. Also for NVDA, there is a bug in the command prompt where it tries to move you in the screen although there's a menu, to get around that, just hit nvda+f2 before each arrow key to bypass. Also, you can run the games from explorer, though that way you may frequently miss any good bye messages and so on. This is because Printing the message is done very quickly and after that the game closes, and seeing explorer's command prompt window is temporary it will close and you'll not see said message. Finally, if you experience slowdown, changing the priority of the EXE (cmd.exe if you're using the command prompt or the game's name.exe if ran from explorer) using the task manager may help. To do that, hit ctrl+shift+esc to open the task manager, find the processes tab, locate the exe in the list, hit your applications key and you will see the priority there. Re: [Audyssey] Instructions was Re: pcs games question?
actually, computers still have pc speakers. The culporate is yet again microsoft. In windows vista it's still handled via the hardware if its a desktop, but under windows 7 it's all handled by the soundcard using sign waves... and it just can't keep up with rapid tones. something like ten pin bowling works just fine, but a tone repeating every 10 MS just comes out as a click, no matter the frequency. - Original Message - From: Phil Vlasak p...@pcsgames.net To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 4:33 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Instructions was Re: pcs games question? Hi Karl, I don't think today's computers have a pc speaker anymore. That is why I have shooting range and breakout on my to do list for conversions. Other games that used the pc speaker extensively were ten pin bowling and space invaders. For those who haven't played the old DOS games, the only way we could hear a sound and hit the shot key was to have the pc speaker play targeting beeps because in DOS we had to stop the running of the game to play real sound effects such as the gun sounds. We could specify the frequency of the beeps so in our DOS games we had low, medium, and high beep tones. For an example, The beep tones played for tenth of a second and simulated you scanning the world in front of you from left to right. First we played a series of low tone beeps to represent the background to the left of your target, then medium pitch beeps to represent the left side of the object or creature you were shooting at, then an even higher beep to represent the center of that creature or object, followed by more medium beeps to represent the right side of the target, then low tone beeps to represent the background to the right of the target. This is not the same with windows, so now we can have the beeps as .wav files. Hi Phil. I'll especially be looking forward to arthur's quest, sinse I've heard those who played it mention good things about the game. Out of interest is there a specific reason your not converting the kick boxing game? was it real time or turn based? which game is like it? I'm just interested sinse I can't think of too much we have in that style besides the savage gambit. Lastly, while I'm not saying you shouldn't convert it, sinse as I've already said more games of one style aren't a bad thing, there is actually another accessible version of breakout besides wrecking ball found at http://www.accessiblewebgames.com/ It is called rebound uses flash, but is self voicing with sapi, and actually is rather fun especially with all the crazy aliens. The reason I mention this is that with the discussion of old arcade games people might be interested, pluss seeing what another dev has donw might let you think of something different. then, the gamevial folks would love feedback and encouragement on all of their accessible flash games too. they actually have made a hole bunch of inaccessible games and came up with the idea of creating accessible ones because they thought vi players should have something to play, but haven't really recieved much feedback, - not sinse I personally phoned them anyway as they're based in scotland only about an hour from where I am. Re: [Audyssey] suggestion for Lunimals
Thanks Dark, although I'd say it is less about me being kind, and more about me recognizing good ideas when they are suggested to me! Haha! The tile coordinate announcements, A-1, C-2, will be accompanied by a sound to indicate whether it is a land tile or water. It seems like a good place to put the sounds, and it will be a super easy thing for me to add. Unless for some reason I forget to add it, the tile sounds will be in the next update. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question?
Hi Dark, That was one of the games I wasn't sure I wanted to convert. I was thinking it was like the savage gambit. As for breakout, we had a different format than the current games in that you are moved automatically from left to right and back again. You hear the state of the bricks in front of you as you move across. You can fire the ball from your gun. When the ball hits it disintegrates and knocks out the brick. Each layer of bricks makes a different sound. As you knock out bricks, the frequency of the objects gets higher and you move faster left to right. To do that, hit ctrl+shift+esc to open the task manager, find the processes tab, locate ctrl+shift+the exe in the list, hit your applications key and you will see the priority there. um... Could you send me the games? I hear there's like 21 of them. Thanks much, Shane - Original Message - From: Pitermach piterm...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Mon, 23 May 2011 09:42:28 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [Audyssey] Instructions was Re: pcs games question? Hi Shane, The PCs Dos games are accessible. I can bring them up and Window-Eyes 7.5 has no problems reading the screens. Diddo for Jaws 11 and Jaws 12. NVDA 2011 has no problems either. So if your screen reader isnt reading it perhaps you need an upgrade. Cheers! Hi Philip, I disagree about Red Dragon. There really aren't any games exactly like that game. Savage Gambit is strictly a boxing game, and Damien is not going to continue that project anyway. There really isn't any good kick boxing games like Red Dragon out there. If you aren't interested in continuing that project I'd be more than happy to convert it to Windows using the G3D engine when I have the time. Its a good game, and I think deserves being updated. Plus your logic in this case is kind of like someone saying a good game like Street Fighter IV shouldn't be produced because there are a bunch of Mortal Kombat games. Both are console fighting games, but are different enough to be classed as different games within the larger fighting genre. We don't really have any fighting games that are strictly accessible and Red Dragon comes closest. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question?
Hi, Yeah, exactly. That's actually the big reason I liked Panzers in North Africa. It was both a strategy game, but also had some fairly realistic statistics etc in it. In World War II The U.S. and British forces got a major hammering from the German Panzers. If you attempted a frontal assault odds were you'd end up dead as the armour in front was tough enough to repell most of our guns. The one and only weakness on the panzer was he armour on the rear was thin and light attack tanks like the M4 could hit them from behind and put the Panzer out of action. It really came down to speed verses raw strength. If your M4 got hit by a shell from the 80 inch guns from a Panzer you were scrap. Cheers! Hi Damien, Not true. I've seen a lot of newer computers and they still have small PC speakers built into the case. Mostly they are only used for beeping when there is a hardware failure or something like that, but hardware PC speakers are still there. Hi Bryan, The tank in GTC is from the future. As you can tell it has an atomic engine so needs no fuel. The cruse missiles are small, the size of a shoe box but are also atomic powered so they can travel far despite their size. It also has self-healing armor that repairs itself after a time. And to top it off, it has a magical expanded ammo bay that will hold as many shells as you can collect. smiles, Phil - Original Message - From: Bryan Peterson bpeterson2...@cableone.net To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, May 23, 2011 6:26 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question? Hi Phil. Indeed, that does sound different, I'll be interested to see how things work sinse rebound plays quite a bit more like Jim's pong in terms of hereing the bouncing ball, with sounds of power ups and monster coming down at you but the blocks themselves not making noise unless they're hit. I did wonder about the boxing game sinse we could probably do with something different here, but if it is similar to savage gambit fair enough. The cops game from your description sounds awsome, I especially like the idea of getting in and out of your police car as well as exploring buildings to catch crooks. Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question?
Hmmm, if it actually had distance that might be a change to gameplay, though if disatance only sered to decide which punch to throw then probably not as much. My issue with savage gambit was that it basically devolved into boppit. much like super football, once you'd trained the keyboard combinations into your brain it took litle judgement or thought to play and you could pretty much win every time. I'd love to see a boxing game which is more analogue in nature and actually requires more from the player than just reaction, though whether phil's doss game could be made to be that way or whether that's another project I'm not sure having not played the pcs doss boxing game. If you take longer he might be running down the street or getting into a car, and you have to chase him. Once you stop the robber, you need to subdue him, either by shooting him, using a taser gun, pepper spray, night stick or punching him. Then putting on handcuffs and stripping him nude. Then hog tying him and throwing him into the back of the car. Then grabbing the bags of money and putting them into your trunk. Followed by driving back to the police station, and throwing him in jail. Then driving to the doughnut shop and using the banks money for buying them for all your fellow cops. Unfortunately, each doughnut you eat will lower your health so you will need to drink many cups of coffee to bring it back to normal. Re: [Audyssey] pcs games question?
Hi Dark, Here is how the kick boxing game worked: The game uses the six pack key group, and the arrow key group to play the game. There are twelve ranked kick boxers for you to fight. You can even make the computer fight itself. Listen for your opponent to throw a punch to your head or body, or to kick out at you. The opponent's yell coming from your left, right, or center will tell you which direction the attack is from. The type of yell he makes tells you what he is aiming for. You try to block his blow, by hitting the correct key. Attacking the opponent is easy by using the three top keys on the six pack group, insert, home, and page up to throw a punch to the opponent's head. The three lower keys del, end, and page down throws a blow to the body. You kick using the left and right arrow keys. You move towards and back from your opponent by using the up and down arrow keys. That is all the keys you need, but it takes lots of practice to beat the champ! I liked the idea of hitting just one key to hit or defend yourself rather than the combos the savage gambit used. Although it sounds simple, the speed of the punches made the game very fast. And remember this game was released in 1999, or twelve years ago. Hello Phil the cops game in windows is going to be much better than the dos version you had. Hi Dark, I am planning to have one city map that you drive around on but each level of the game will include several building interiors. When you get out of your car and go into a building, the game will teleport you into that room or building. For example You start the game in the police station. You get a report that a bank is robbed. You climb in your police car and zoom over to the bank. If you get there fast enough you might catch the robber still in the bank. Then you will have to find a place to go as your bladder will be filled. You visit a local bowling alley, and before going to the bathroom, you stop to bowl a few frames. Finally it is off to the men's room. Possibly, the game developer could post to the audyssey list, readers comment, and the mag's editor selects the cream of the crop for publication. My thought about an article on the history of gaming for the blind is this: I think this article could be a lengthy one, and an interesting one as well. Hi Dark, Yeah, I know. HOwever, the Harpies are still not working right. I was hoping ot release MOTA beta 19 today, but that is still one bug holding the game back. I might disable the vertical combat feature until I can nail down the bug. Actually, I think I know what is wrong, and it has more to do with the fact all the game logic was specifically designed for an 3d FPS shooter, and it can't operate correctly in a 2d only environment. [Audyssey] Modern/Scifi RPG
I know how annoying this sort of message can be, but I am quite close to pleading with a kindly developer to construct an RPG that is not set in medieval or fantasy worlds. I love that style of RPG, but I'm afraid of the consequences of it becoming the only style existent. There are a few options here. Let's assume that we work with a multi-character party, like Entombed. I'd love to see something like a party of mercenaries, for modern day, or maybe Mechs and such for future days. Galaxy Rangers somewhat falls along these lines, but it's more of a strategy game than anything like an RPG. I know whit is really an odd post, and some people get upset at being asked, entreated as to what to make, but that is what this is. On the subject of spam, I wander why it is we are so critical about spam but not by junk mail that comes in our boxes. We recieve loads of adverts from various stores, and coopons, etc each week and though some are quite usefull most are just spam, bar a few acceptions Most of us happily accept spam snail mail in fact we look foreward to it including the local papers we never subscribed to. The issue with all dos games is the fact most of the older ones were only 386 compatable so all the beeps are super fast on some others. To do that, hit ctrl+shift+esc to open the task manager, find the processes tab, locate ctrl+shift+the exe in the list, hit your applications key and you will see the priority there.
