[LAAMN] Killing Civilians Is a More Popular Than You'd Think

2013-05-06 Thread scotpeden
How eager are you, personally, to kill civilians, whether in the USA, or
to target them for death in other nations?

I may be wrong about the percentage of crazies I live next to, it appears
it is many many times greater then I thought. It's now understandable to
me why we can murder people through out the world, and so few in our so
called Christian Nation, care, as after all, assassinating defenseless
people is part of our heritage, it's in our TV, our schooling, and our
Entertainment. We are the best educated murders in millenniums.

Fifty-eight percent of both Protestants and Catholics say it's sometimes
justified for the military to target and kill civilians. And 64 percent
of Mormons! Only Muslims and nonbelievers more often than not say it's
never OK.

I spoke this morning, along with correspondent Daniella Peled, on Monocle
24's The Globalist about the details and consequences of Israel's
airstrikes inside Syria this weekend.

*Listen from 7:09 mark --- with my contribution from 10:20 --- onThe

Take-away points:

1. A lot of the supposed information on the airstrikes --- such as Israel
targeting weapons like Iranian-made Fateh 110 missiles or Israel acting
without notifying the US --- is misleading or incorrect;

1. Everyone --- the regime, the insurgency, regime supporters like Iran,
opposition supporters like the US, Turkey, and Arab States --- has to
re-calculate strategy in light of these attacks;

3. But fundamentally, this does not change the calculus: is Assad going to
help firm or step down? Are the opposition and insurgency going to be able
to unify to help build international support?

4. The Israelis are trying to degrade Assad's military capabilities, which
just happens to help the insurgents if they decide to make a push on
Damascus.

I also talk about Sunday's curious report that a United Nations
investigator has claimed suspicions of insurgent use of the nerve agent
sarin.

*I protest to you because I will not allow the government and the rights

* Letter of protest from Simón Bolívar to Mr. Irvine,*
*Agent of the American Government. Angostura,*
*October 7, 1818*

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects with all the
force of its Bolivarian dignity the statements made by the president of the
United States, Barack Obama, in Mexico City on May 3, 2013.

Once again, President Obama attacks the legitimate government of Venezuela
which was elected on April 14 through a transparent electoral process,
whose results were recognized by electoral accompaniers coming from the
whole continent and other countries of the world, including the Electoral
Mission of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) as well as by all
the governments of Latin America and the Caribbean and other continents.

By making statements such as “the people of Venezuela deserve to determine
their own destiny free from the kinds of practices that the entire
hemisphere generally has moved away from,” President Obama seems to ignore
that during 14 years of Bolivarian Government, we the Venezuelan people
have adopted an electoral system that stems from a constitutional
recognition of the importance of this issue through the creation of a new
branch, the Electoral Branch, whose governing body is the National
Electoral Council (CNE).

President Obama, please get informed. The CNE has been able to overcome the
terrible practices that used to violate people’s will, and that the U.S.
supported in order to have governments docile to its mandates. This was
attained by establishing an automated voting system in which a voter casts
his or her vote through a voting machine that tallies the votes at the end
of the process and transmits the results to the CNE counting center.
Additionally, a series of audits are carried out before, during and after
the electoral process, to guarantee the accuracy of the data shown by the
respective ballots.

Similarly, you, President Obama, state that “there are reports indicating
that basic principles of human rights, democracy, press freedom and freedom
of assembly are not observed in Venezuela.” Although we are no longer
surprised by such unfounded statements, we are obliged to respond with what
the rest of the hemisphere already knows, which is that human rights are
totally and absolutely respected in Venezuela, since the moment Commander
Hugo Chávez assumed leadership of the Venezuelan State and proposed the
composition of a new constitution possesses the most advanced catalog of
human rights in the whole region.

Since then, we have created several institutions to ensure respect for and
greater access to human rights and new public policies that today allow all
people living in this dignified country to have more and better guarantees

*“They caught me!”*

Well, well, well, well, well. Who have we here? Why, it’s our old friend
MariCori! You may recall how, the other day, she was wearing a whiplash
collar and complaining of no fewer than four nasal
fractures,http://www.sabinabecker.com/2013/05/the-ironies-of-the-venezuelan-opposition-part-22.html
allegedly
sustained at the hands of some Chavista rabble. And how she travelled to
Colombia a short time later, to kvetch to the usual fascist sympathizers
(and, no doubt, collect a huge cash infusion from the usual gringo bagmen.)

Well, somehow, on the way to Bogotá, MariCori experienced what can only be
called a miracle cure: http://www.aporrea.org/oposicion/n228281.html

*As is well known by the right-wing press and the putschist channel
Globovisión, parliamentary deputy María Corina Machado was the target of a
supposed aggression. Strangely, no one knows who dealt her the particular
blow that caused four fractures to her nasal bones, and in spite of the
“seriousness” of the injury, she didn’t have even a little black eye, as
one normally would in such a case.*
*

A few hours after the “incident”, the deputy flew to the capital of
Colombia. But in mid-flight, an amateur photographer, one of those who
abound everywhere thanks to cellphones, captured the moment of a
“miraculous recovery”, which has rarely been seen documented
photographically: María Corina freed herself of the “therapeutic collar”,
and her little nose was as straight and white as ever.
*

*Even so, the parliamentarian took advantage of the occasion to indulge in
some cosmetic surgery which she had already put off for several years, due
to her “hard work” as opponent of the Bolivarian government.*

Translation mine.

Gee, maybe I should ask MariCori what saints she prays to. It’s obvious
that she has much more of a direct line to God than the rest of us mere
mortals. (Or at least, to Washington…)

Meanwhile, MariCori’s co-religionist, Julio Borges, got enough of a black
eye for both of them:

[LAAMN] Daam Workers Party-The Israeli attacks on Syria serve Assad’s criminal regime

The Israeli attacks on Syria serve Assad’s criminal regime
Posted on 06/05/2013 http://en.daam.org.il/?p=414 by Da'am Workers
Partyhttp://en.daam.org.il/?author=1

A political statement by Daam Workers Party on the recent Israeli air
strikes in Syria

Daam Workers Party condemns the Israeli bombings of targets in Syria,
especially in the heart of Damascus. This is blatant interference in the
process that is underway in Syria, and it harms the revolution of the
Syrian people: the struggle to topple the Assad regime and to live in
dignity. Israel – which has been occupying the West Bank and the Golan
Heights for decades, and which conducts an inhumane siege on Gaza – has no
right to carry out an aggression which could lead to a regional war.

The Israeli adventure plays into the hands of the Assad regime, which
conducts a barbaric attack on the Syrian people with support from Iran,
Russia, and Hezbollah. The bombardment lends a sheen of credibility to
Assad’s false claim that the revolution is an Israeli-American initiative.
In recent days the regime, together with Hezbollah, has perpetrated a
horrible massacre in the cities of Banias and Kassir; this is part of a
program of ethnic cleansing, meant to terrorize the population and quell
the revolution. The Israeli attacks distract attention from these crimes,
putting the limelight instead on Israel’s long conflict with the Arab
world. This is gratuitous service to the Assad regime.

The Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, which
represents the Syrian people, demands international action in order to
defend the civilian population and stop the massacres. The international
community’s ongoing refusal to fulfill this demand has cost more than
70,000 lives, while the number of wounded and imprisoned is in the hundreds
of thousands and the number of refugees in the millions. The world’s
silence is destroying Syria. In the midst of it, Israel attacks without
getting international or Arab support for its actions. Israel’s purpose is
to show its strategic dominance over the region. It has nothing to do with
the interests or the aspirations of the Syrian people which Israel never
respected.

The toppling of the Syrian or Iranian regime does not interest Israel. The
struggle belongs to the Syrian and Iranian peoples, which pit themselves
against Fascist dictatorial regimes. The future of Hezbollah in Lebanon is
likewise the interest of the Lebanese people, which has been hostage to
Hezbollah’s sectarian ambitions.

Daam calls on public opinion in Israel and the world to take an unequivocal
stand against the right-wing Israeli government and to call for an end to
aggression, an end to the policy of occupation and settlements, and an end
to the attitude of refusal that prevents a peace agreement.

We bend our heads before the Syrian revolution and its victims!

 *Massacre in Baniyas.*

Though it was lost in the news of a massive Israeli airstrike in the
capital, and lots of buzz about chemical weapons, this weekend there was a
disturbing development on the coast of Syria, in Baniyas. The area is
primarily populated by Alawites, however several some villages have a
primarily Sunni population, and it appears that it is the Sunni villages
that have been attacked. Perhaps more than 100 people have been killed in
several villages. An activist has posted this
summaryhttp://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rk5dui,
excerpted below, which has links to four graphic videos, though EA has not
yet been able to verify the report:

*

The campaign of shelling and massacres in Banias and its villages stopped
today; however, the fear of massacres still continues among the people.
Security forces opened the road today to the neighborhood of Ras Al-Naba'
and Batraya. The smell of the corpses of the martyrs has spread throughout
the city. The Red Crescent accompanied some of the people to remove the
bodies, which led to the discovery of more bodies of martyrs, who were
field-executed and slaughtered with knives (especially children). There is
a huge number of martyrs who have not yet been documented. Regime forces
dug up a large hole on the outskirts of the city as a mass grave for the
martyrs of Ras Al-Naba'.

The neighborhood of Ras Al-Naba'a and the village of Bayda are declared a
disaster-zone and not suitable for further life whatsoever, after
witnessing a campaign of ethnic cleansing of the Sunnis on the coast by
Assad forces.

Bayda Village shows absolutely no traces of human life. All the homes were
burned by security forces and the Syrian Army buried the bodies in mass
graves. Activists, however, continue to discover many new bodies unburied
in the jungles of the village.
*

The Syrian regime has recruited Alawite militias to maintain security over
Baniyas and much of the countryside on the coast. One man who has been
hired to lead this effort is Turkish, Mihraç Ural, the chief of the

activists

As one of the former heads of Shin Bet said, in the powerful and timely
documentary The Gatekeepers, Israel wins the battles but is losing the
war. The last thing which is in the long
range interests of Israel is any further military escalation with its
neighbors.

And to the EdgeLeft list
David

I'm sending this to several lists, so some of you will get it at least twice
- sorry about that.

While at this point Israel has not confirmed the attacks, it has been
reliably established that
Israeli jets struck twice at Damascus, killing perhaps at least a hundred
Syrian troops and
inflicting heavy damage on facilities in the Syrian capital.

The US media (and officials) are thus far supporting the Israeli actions and
there is a general
assumption that such a major military strike would not have occurred without
at least some
consultation with Washington DC.

The Israeli excuse (if it is possible, really, to excuse two heavy air
strikes at the capital city
of a neighboring country!) is that it was concerned about the shipment of
military supplies from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

It should not be necessary (but it may help) to point out that unlike Syria,
Israel is, like the US, a democracy. And while that is true, it is necessary
to point out that the US citizens have little control over our own military,
having seen wars launched without Congressional approval in Vietnam, Iraq,
Afghanistan, etc. Wars which, while launched by a democracy have had an
absolutely lethal impact on the people - men, women and children - in the
countries we have
democratically attacked. In the same way, Israel, an apartheid state,
which has denied
basic human rights to the Occupied Territories for decades, has conducted
criminal attacks on the Palestinians not only in the West Bank but in Gaza,
and that the very existence of Hezbollah in Lebanon is a direct result of
the Israeli invasion of Lebanon some years ago.

As one of the former heads of Shin Bet said, in the powerful and timely
documentary The Gatekeepers, Israel wins the battles but is losing the
war. The last thing which is in the long
range interests of Israel is any further military escalation with its
neighbors.

One can assume that the Israeli lobby - not just AIPAC, the American Jewish
Congress, etc. - will press for more direct US involvement, but that the
Republican Party will press for more military action and Obama may well
decide to give Israel US support and possibly to escalate US
military aid to the rebels.

The truth - not easy to find in the US media - is that Assad is not losing
the civil war but, if
anything, has been winning it, as the rebels come more and more under the
influence of Islamist
elements which, in power, would prove more murderous than Assad. This is a
story we have
seen before - remember the fall out from our support for the Afghan
opposition to the Soviet
invasion, and how those weapons were, in turn, directed at the US.

It is urgent that local peace and justice groups take action to demand the
US stay out of the Syrian Civil War, that it use its influence in the
Security Council to denounce the Israeli action
(fat chance of that - but we can urge it). Letters to the newspapers,
letters (not emails) to members of Congress - and most important arranging
to send community delegations to visit with your member of Congress when he
or she is home on the wekends.

I'm sending this out as widely as I can and hope that whatever other
disagreements some of our groups have with one another we can be united in
opposing further escalation of the Syrian civil war.

Urgently,
David McReynolds
NYC

RE: Guantanamo:

Islamic Law PoWs: probably the best short account is Mohamed el Zeidy
and Ray Murphy, Islamic Law Prisoners of War and its relationship to
International Humanitarian Law, The Italian Yearbook of International
Law, (2004), pp. 53-81. You can get open access online through Google
Scholar. It's a little dry but it gives a pretty comprehensive account,
including a useful summary of the sources and analytical methods of
Islamic Law. The base sources, as ever, are the Qur'an and the sunnah --
the 'clear path' of the practices of the Prophet Mohammed as teacher and
exemplar (hence 'Sunni' Islam). The specific source is siyar, an 8th C
compilation of Muslim international and humanitarian law, which predates
European international law and humanitarian law by 900 1000 years; and
generally, with some exceptions, compares favorably with the Geneva
Conventions.

Thought this might interest you in view of your ICH forward.

How eager are you, personally, to kill civilians, whether in the USA, or
to target them for death in other nations?

I may be wrong about the percentage of crazies I live next to, it
 appears
it is many many times greater then I thought. It's now understandable to
me why we can murder people through out the world, and so few in our so
called Christian Nation, care, as after all, assassinating defenseless
people is part of our heritage, it's in our TV, our schooling, and our
Entertainment. We are the best educated murders in millenniums.

Killing Civilians Is a More Popular Than You'd Think

 By Jim Naureckas
Fifty-eight percent of both Protestants and Catholics say it's
 sometimes
justified for the military to target and kill civilians. And 64
 percent
of Mormons! Only Muslims and nonbelievers more often than not say it's
 never OK.

[LAAMN] Responsibility for ones own actions, Quotes

2013-05-06 Thread scotpeden

Allow the President to invade a neighboring nation, whenever he shall
deem it necessary to repel an invasion, and you allow him to do so,
whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary for such a purpose --
and you allow him to make war at pleasure. If today, he should choose to
say he thinks it necessary to invade Canada, to prevent the British from
invading us, how could you stop him? You may say to him, 'I see no
probability of the British invading us' but he will say to you, 'Be
silent; I see it, if you don't. :
Abraham Lincoln.

The problems of this world are so gigantic that some are paralysed by
their own uncertainty. Courage and wisdom are needed to reach out above
this sense of helplessness. Desire for vengeance against deeds of hatred
offers no solution. An eye for an eye makes the world blind. If we wish to
choose the other path, we will have to search for ways to break the spiral
of animosity. To fight evil one must also recognize one's own
responsibility. The values for which we stand must be expressed in the way
we think of, and how we deal with, our fellow humans - From the Christmas
Message 2001 of HM Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands
