Distributor ID:Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

if any of the above helps, I have lubuntu_desktop installed hence it is
saying Ubuntu but the base OS is the same, or pretty much the same.

upon running i get the following output

psutton@E-machine:~$ alien-arena

I am unable to find anything

google reveals this

http://video.answers.com/manage-start-up-applications-in-ubuntu-210071490
which is what i am looking for, did a search in synaptic found nothing
useful, (startup) to see if I can install something.

but I can't find the mentioned widget / applet or what ever the term for
that is.

can someone help please

I can't even find the option in skype 4.1 to stop it loading i m sure it
used to be there.

Lubuntu install

2013-02-25 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

I have a laptop with
http://www.amd.com/uk/products/desktop/processors/athlon-ii-x2/Pages/AMD-athlon-ii-x2-processor-model-numbers-feature-comparison.aspx

AMD athlon II X2 processor, I take it from the above spec list its 64
bit and therefore I should use the 64 bit ISO for installation.

any suggestions, or things I should take into account,

I do have a usb stick with the 32 bit version on this boots up fine

also does anyone have experience with Lubuntu and

/ATI Radeon/™ /HD 4250 graphics hardware please, linked to the above/

grub configuration

2013-03-23 Thread Paul Sutton

I am digging around trying to work out how to change which system boots
by default

http://zleap.net/notes-grub-configuration/

I have put some notes on my website, it seems that :

1. I can change where things appear on the boot menu as in what order
but to change a set of steps i need to do this using the command line
and a text editor

is this correct or is there a tool somewhere to simply allow me to
select the OS and then hit set to default and have this set my selection
to default. I am sure there was a tool for this, what I can't
understand is why grub-customiser can't do this too, or maybe it can't
its just not obvious that the option is doing this.

thanks

reinstalling ubuntu 12.10

2013-04-08 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

I need to re-install Lubuntu cleanly, my current system is dual boot
with linpus, which is never used, the rest of the system was ubuntu
which via apt-get install lubuntu-dekstop now runs that hence i may have
previosuly referred to this as hybrid.

http://zleap.net/reinstall-of-lubuntu/

as you can see from the disk utility the file system is a MESS

is the best way to go about reinstalling simply to wipe the whole hard
disk and start over

in which case 250 gb hard disk

split as

/boot / 1 GB
/home 90 GB (approx)
/ 149 GB (approx)
/swap about 4 - 8 gb (2gb ram)

Currently using just over 50gb for /home (this WILL be backed up)

Where does steam install games to ? the main file system or in
/home/user this will determine how much I allocate to /home or /

the only person using this system is ME and there is an external HDD

odd output from file manager

2013-04-08 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

Using file manager on lubuntu (see previous post regarding reinstalling)
if I right click on a folder and select properties I get rather odd out put

http://zleap.net/lubuntu-12-04-file-manager/

if this is anything to go by

i am using 174 gb taking up 11.2 TB of diskspace on a 250GB hard disk,
maybe I should name my
newly installed system Tardis :D

One of the reasons I want to re-install I can just bring over to the
main system what |I use most often and store everything else externally.

Hi

just tried to install alacarte in order to edit the menu, lubuntu 12.10

Since reinstalling lubuntu 12.10 dropbox no longer functions

I have it installed and it does show up in the task bar but I can't

installed but as lubuntu doesn't use nautilus this is probably not needed.

dropbox

2013-05-06 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

Are there any known issues with dropbox and lubuntu 12.10

after a clean install my drop box folder has picked up all my files but
won't let me right click on them, I am sure I copied over the right
configuration stuff from the backup, i just can't get it so I can right
click and share files.

I tried and failed to update the lubntu 12.10 poster, in inkscape, i
looks fine in inkscape as I changed the 12.10 to 13.04 i just can't
share it, or share it to figure out why it the 13.04 looks like a white
blob in other graphicsd programs, I am not a graphic designer anyway is
anyone working on the 13.04 poster, even if they simply update the
version text in the short term

thanks

dhclient

2013-05-09 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

does dhcliebnt still work on Lubuntu, i seem to get the following when
running it

psutton@e-machines:~$ sudo dhclient
[sudo] password for psutton:

RTNETLINK answers: File exists
psutton@e-machines:~$

at one time it used to poll the router for each interface and come up
with either a new ip address or nothing at all , no nothing happens
apart from the above

if it helps

psutton@e-machines:~$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

I am sure there is a file somewhere that specifies if ip addresses are
static or dynamic and allows sections to be commented or the sections
needed for static to be set manually,

Using Lubntu 12.10

Thanks

Feel free to use any screenshots on my website

http://zleap.net/

On my blog I have put a few how_tos so again feel free to grab what you
want from this,

I know some LaTeX but am no way an expert

One example could be

http://zleap.net/lubuntu-menu-editing-lxmed/

and perhaps

http://zleap.net/lubuntu-menu-editing/

I acknowledgfe these are not officially part of the distro, but I think
menu editing is a pretty core tasks sometimes.

and

While I consider the screen shots I made to be creative commons I am
happy to simply be listed in a contributor list

reportng bugs

2013-05-22 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

I am trying to find out how to submit a bug report on launchpad and am
getting no where

I have done this once before

<https://bugs.launchpad.net/%7Ezleap>

in relation to ubuntu advoacy kit, but can't figure out how i started
off, the one relating to the brother printer is a reply

Can someone please advise what I am meant to click on to simply report a
new or possible bug in software gwrite. I want to see if others get the
same problem i am having.

I am assuming I should be on the

https://bugs.launchpad.net/~zleap <https://bugs.launchpad.net/%7Ezleap>
page (as in my account) maybe someone gave me link before i am not sure.

and do it from there,

thanks

That sounds useful as I am probably far better at writing stuff than I
am at markup, esp if keeping that markup consistent with other docs,
also if its in a central format then other versions can be produced from
that central document so docbook, xml, html, latex etc

upgrade to 13.04

2013-06-14 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

Just to let you know I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 last night and its
all got very smoothly, a good tip if leaving it to get on with it, is
to keep checking back to make sure its not asking for something apart
from that it went very well.

Re: [Lubuntu-comms] Munich distributes Linux CDs to get people to ditch Windows XP

2013-09-15 Thread Paul Sutton

Resending this as I just clicked reply and by default doing that the
mail gets sent to the original poster rather than the list

It would be really handy to be able to get some Lubuntu pressed cd's
cheaply, I know canonical sell 5 ubunty cd's for £5 but I can buy a 50
blank dvd's for that, it would be nice to be able to simply buy say 25
properly pressed cd's for a reasonable price, proper printed cd's etc.,
Ideally in the UK.

Maybe for Lubuntu 13.10 this could be possible. ?

Would be ideal for events etc, it would also look professional,

promoting development opportunities

2013-09-25 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

I recently found a really useful poster on the benefits of contributing
to open source / free software projects:-

specfically this website http://nlug.wikispot.org/Linux_Advocacy_Posters
and the bottom link
PromoteOSStoCSmajors.jpg

This got me thinking that as I am in early stages of contacting a few
volunteer agencies I have asked one if any volunteering HAS to be in the
Torbayu area, the person I e-mailed is getting back to me, however this
does present an ideal opportunity to promote various projects and how to
get involved.

I could do this via my local lug, but the website is still not that
effective i would rather direct people towards

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved

and similar pages

does this sound like a good idea, i can do this via my local linux user
groups too, in fact I will upload that poster to a page on getting
involved.,

http://dcglug.drogon.net/get-involved/

now links to the poster and links to the page mentioned above.

is this useful, is there more i can add to this ?

try running dmidecode as root (or use sudo) to get a big list of
hardware, there also lshw and lshw-gtk (if you want a nice gui
interface) and a few others,

post to pastebin or use command > hardware.txt to save as a text file

start stop services in Lubuntu 13.04

2013-10-28 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

Just been chatting to wh0_d4T on irc, with regard to starting cups on
lubntu 13.04

I know that you use

/home/psutton/.config/autostart

to auto start applications, such as chrome, chromium, xchat, update
notifier, these are user interactive programs,

However as cups is a daemon / service., what is now used to start stop
services on the system upon boot up, is there a simple guide to editing
the appropriate text files OR a gui tool like the old sysvinit, tool
which presented you with a list of services on the left, then a series
of boxes at the top for each run level to start up, and below a series
of boxes as to what would shut down.

What is needed is an uptodate guide on how to do this, with editing
filers included as if the GUI ever goes wrong or there is only ssh
access then systems can still be fixed.

preferences - desktop session settings does not seem to deal with back
ground stuff such as

cupsd
sshd

and such like.

I think there is so much info out there, some is out of date, but just
having daemon instead of services can make a difference,

I think all this has something to do with initd and rc.d directories,

users should NOT have edit text files, but sometimes it is needed,
there really should be tools for this, but also users should understand
what is going on in the background as in what these tools are doing.

Thanks

Paul

2013-12-23 Thread Paul Sutton
Hi

I have included below a blog post describing a startup (post login)
issue, and have included some screen shots of the boxes. in the hope

I have no idea what this relates to. however given I also an issue with
desktop pager settings, could there be a link between the two.

xsession with ctrl-alt-f7/f8

2014-04-13 Thread Paul Sutton

Hi

If I do ctrl-alt-f2 i get a console, if I try and get back to the
running xsession with ctrl-alt-f7 it fails, but if I use f8 it works,

when did this change and why ? I am sure it used to be on F7.

Btw this seems to be the case on xubuntu but I am guessing that this is
the route taken by *ubuntu generally recently, is it linked to the move
to SYSD from SYSV or just been moved to give more console screens.

What would be really useful is like in Debian, as you install you can
click a button to take screen shots of each step,

this would make things much easier, (unless you are using something like
vmware) to produce illustrations for installs.

I had to alter lubuntu so the screen dump grab program comes up when
pressing print-screen, but also allow the user to then manually grab the
required window.

But saying that, if that could somehow come from the top down, so as we
are all based on Ubuntu which in turn is based on Debian, then perhaps
if added to ubuntu then it could filter down.

Would that make documentation easier ?

Re: spontaneous closing of applications

Hi

If you boot up and work with out the external hard disk, does the same
issue crop up after an hour, i guess by removing the external hdd from
the equation then you can narrow down if that is the cause.

Thanks I seem to have it installed as gnome-disks however it used to
appear in settings manager as disks, now it doesn't so there seems to
be two entries or a conflict somewhere.

as the item that appears in there is different removable drives and media.

So where as before gnome-disks appeared in settings manager it now does not

Is there a clash somewhere

Hi Nio

I think the first page is cleaner and better, However the forum page
also gives user interaction so people can bring up very specific
issues that may not be applicable to everyone.

In the light of this perhaps the two should link to each other, so
the help.Ubuntu could link to specific forum threads, and in turn the
threads could have a read this first post, which points back to the
help page as that is likely to answer most questions.

If something crops up time and time again, then what ever that is
could be addressed in on help page.

If the two can complement then they become a far more powerful resource.

Applications also need to be resize able quite a few don't fit on the
screen and the Ok button is usually off the bottom of the screen,
either leaving users with guesswork as to if they have tabbed to it,
or the application goes unused.

Maybe application designers can factor this in and set the window so
it can be resized and all the options / buttons still visible.

I think wpagui is an exanple of this, the screen to add new network is
quite long, is there any reason why this can't be longer (width)
rather than long (height)

Re: [lubuntu-users] wireless printer not showing up in lubuntu

2016-10-21 Thread Paul Sutton
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

If you install hplip then this is the hp printing system, it a gui
tool to look at printer status, ink levels etc

I have a wireless HP envy, to set that up i type something like
hp-setup 192.168.0.x (ip of printer) and it runs a wizard to help you
set it up for that client.

I think generally the printer should get a static IP address so it is
on the same part of the network

if it helps I have mint 17.3 but the above worked on xubuntu fine.

a list of hp related packages are below (sorry for the long list here)

hplip-data - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - data files
hplip-dbg - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - debugging information
hplip-doc - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - documentation
libsane-hpaio - HP SANE backend for multi-function peripherals
printer-driver-hpcups - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - CUPS Raster
driver (hpcups)
printer-driver-pxljr - printer driver for HP Color LaserJet 35xx/36xx
hplip - HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)
libhpmud-dev - HP Multi-Point Transport Driver (hpmud) development
libraries
libhpmud0 - HP Multi-Point Transport Driver (hpmud) run-time libraries
openprinting-ppds - OpenPrinting printer support - PostScript PPD files
printer-driver-hpijs - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - printer driver
(hpijs)
hpijs-ppds - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - HPIJS PPD files
hplip-gui - HP Linux Printing and Imaging - GUI utilities (Qt-based)

It is a good idea to install the GUI package

maybe an idea to also do a google search for hplip and
and Lubuntu or a combination to see if there is any specific notes out
there.

[lubuntu-users] Trash icon

2018-10-22 Thread Paul Sutton

Hi all

Granted I am currently using Debian + LXDE however I have noticed the
following:-

On the desktop the wastebasket is labeled as 'wastebasket'
if you right click you get 'empty rubbish bin'
In desktop preferences app you get
show Trash Can on desktop

Not sure if this happens on Lubuntu, but I think there needs to be some
sort of consistency in naming here.

I just wondered if this was common to lxde, or is it the way debian lxde
is set up.

If I understand things correctly if formatted with a FAT type os e.g
fat16.,32, not sure what exFAT probably allows larger file systems,  it
can be read from and written to by a wide range of operating systems
with less issues.

I am sure others will correct me and or comment further.  So please
don't take the above at face value,  we need more expert input on this .

I used to get this issue quite often with Lubuntu, one of the reasons I
dumped it favour of Mint, I am no on Debian. For some reason trying
to report the issue fails or you get the status thing moving back and
forth for ages, so no idea what it was actually doing.

There has to be an issue somewhere if these issues are still in 20.04
