Can anyone tell me if it is possible to identify grades greater than a certain

MI Area overlap

1999-08-18 Thread Peter Walsh

I have a tricky SQL someone might be able to help me with (at least, it's
tricky for me).
I have two tables of polygons, one is land use, the other are management
units. I need a breakdown of land use within each management unit. I need to
be able to say for example, "management unit Type A comprises 10% cropping,
and 90% grazing land use."

There was a discussion not long ago about the use of the AreaOverlap
function, but I can't seem to make it work for me. It would be nice if I
could do this by calculating proportion overlap, rather than having to split
the land use polygons. The two files are very big and complex.

Any ideas?

Re: MI Theme colors

1999-08-18 Thread CISGWW

here are two answers i received to the following:

my table has a field with 10 specific values in it that i set up color
themes for. when the entrire table is mapped, the colors correctly match the
corresponding value of the field. for example: apple=red, pear=yellow,
grape=purple, pea=green.

however, when i query and map only a portion of the table, it may only have
2 of the 10 values present, such as pear and pea. the color theme then
becomes pear=red and pea=yellow. the color is being determined by the order
the
value appears in the field, rather than the value itself.

the thematic map type=individual and the template name=region indvalue.

how do i set up the theme colors to always be apple=red, pear=yellow,
grape=purple, pea=green, regardless of the order they appear in the field

 Answer from MI tech support:

Unfortunately, you would need to write a MapBasic application to do this.
There really isn't anyway to set this up in MapInfo.

 Cindy
 MapInfo Technical Support

here's an answer from the MapInfo-L discussion group...

1. In your dataset, make sure that all of your particular data pieces are
assigned a #. For instance, pear = 1, apple = 2, orange = 3
2. Under Ranges in the Thematic Map Step 1 section, choose Area Ranges,
Default.
3. Pick your table and field in section 2.
4. In step 3 Customize area, choose Ranges...
5. For Method, pick Custom.
For # of ranges, choose 10
6. Type in ranges: 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3, etc. for all ten items.
7. Choose OK
8. Choose Styles in the Customize section.
9. Make your color style for each item, then hit OK.
10. SAVE the template as "Greg's Fruit Salad," or whatever.

Having a heck of a time trying to address match in MI 4.5.

1999-08-18 Thread D W

Hi Richard, view your street data in a browser window and see if there are
any street number range columns, from left, to left, etc. where the house
address numbers are present. If no numbers are present you can only geocode
off of the muliple street segments present, i.e., you have no way to
distinquish which segment to pick. If you have street intersection data you
might be able to geocode to that level.

Having a heck of a time trying to address match in MI 4.5.

Using the street file (d.tab) for the street, and using the City
Boundary File (cb.tab) to refine the search.

The only thing I get back from the search is multiple street locations, and
no address matching. My preferences are set for the address before the
street

Re: MI MapX questions

1999-08-18 Thread Gary Schwartz

Ara,

No, you do not have to install the entire SDK on the user's
machine. In fact, doing so would be a violation of the End User
License. The help file that ships with MapX has a section on
Distributing MapX Applications (do a help search on "distributing").
This describes in detail the files that need to be installed on the
user's machine and where the should be installed to.

As for your second question, I'm not sure why that would be
happening. Perhaps someone else on the list has a better idea.

Good luck,
Gary.

Re: MI MapX questions

1999-08-18 Thread Jeff James

Howdy,

I can address the first question, but I haven't fiddled too
much with the raster images within the MapX framework.

Regarding installations, the Package & Deployment Wizard
is simply too limited to be able to do a MapX installation.  Look in the
MapX help file regarding deployment of MapX applications.  Not only do you
have to include a bunch of dll's, ocx's, and tlb's, you also have to install
fonts, register some (but not all) of the dll's, register the tlb's, write
registry keys.  It's a pain, but if you follow the instructions by the
letter, it does work.  I've had success installing MapX using InstallShield
Professional, and "lesser" versions could probably do the job as
well.

Simply put, the VB Package & Deployment wizard can't do
it.  Also, installing the full SDK as you're doing *might* violate some
licensing issues.

One rumor had it that MapX 4 (which should be out soonish) was
going to include it's own installation routine... but rumors are
rumors.

MI problems printing colours

1999-08-18 Thread Tim Warman

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question on HPGL2 printing. I've
downloaded the Oce drivers, but haven't tried it yet as I'm still working
on the maps.

I've been trying to print some smaller test plots at the same scale
(1:24,000) on our HP Deskjet 855C, but it doesn't print many of the colours
correctly when printing lines. The basic colours like red, blue, black and
green come out nice and sharp, but most of the rest come out as faint,
"bitty" looking lines, almost like a bad raster image of a vector line. A
specific example is the the color RGB 128,128,0, which is the fifth from
the right on the top row of the MI colour palette (on 5.0). I'm trying to
print some contour lines with this colour but they look terrible.

Is this just a limitation of my printer? I downloaded the latest driver
from HP (the 850C driver), but that doesn't help. Any suggestions?

MI How to handle multi-user in Mapbasic apps?

1999-08-18 Thread Bill Thoen

I know this has been mentioned before, but most of what I
remember about it is that there are still problems with
multi-user access to MapInfo tables. I have also run into this
myself, and found that even MapBasic's error trapping for
database conflicts is not reliable. I've been told that the
answer lies in using a more robust multi-user database (like MS
Access) for data, but how would you suggest I deal with the
issues of people needing to update and modify the MapInfo table
that maintains the map objects? Past message sseem to indicate
that this is still a real problem. I need assurance that in 5.5
it is not a problem, or a workaround.

I'll summarize responses so you can either email me direct or if
you have more light to shed on the problem, please post
publically.

TIA,

- Bill Thoen

PC.
    Q:    Do we
always need to install and use MapX SDK to run an application?
    If not
- how?

2. We tried to call a geotiff raster to be shown as a vector
backdrop - It really took a long time compare to the
    usual MI Pro.
Q:    What do I have to to
make it faster?
    After
it was loaded - We failed to show it in a small zoom(It doesn't appear in the
screen)
    Image
quality also degraded(appears some lines on top of image)
    Is it
capable opening more than one raster file?(We loaded two files and than the app.
hang up).
    Our
image file size average is 35MB.

We use MapX 3.5 and VB 6.0 in a PC with
PII-400MHz, 64MB Ram, 4 MB VRam, 2X 4.3GB HDD.

Please do help us - since this is our first experience
developing a map based app. with MapX and VB.
Your shared experiences and ideas would be very
appreciated.

Thank's in Advance.

Re: MI Custom Region Style Patterns

1999-08-18 Thread Anssi Joutsiniemi

Ethan

The following lines are from Warren Vick's return to Question: MI Can I add
patterns to MapInfo? few months ago on Mapinfo-L?

Officially no, but you can hack the fill pattern resources which are in
MapInfo Pro. It's not clean or
portable, but perhaps could be a last resort.

You need to use a good resource editor, like the one in MS Developer Studio.
Open the MI Pro
resource file MIRES500.DLL (it changes name with each release). Go into the
bitmaps sections
and inflict as much damage as you like to bitmaps 9 to 61.

Hope this helps,
Anssi

MI self-crossing polygons

1999-08-18 Thread Mapmail

Hi there
Is there any way of automatically finding and correcting self-crossing
polygons ?
I have created some regions containing polygons. These polygons are
automatically created from coordinates, but sometimes the same polygon can
end up using the same coordinate several times. I believe this is why I
should see the polygon as being self-crossing. None of the lines cross, but
there are corners that use exactly the same coordinate.
I need to perform some 'Objects Combine', but can't unless the polygons are
flawless. Since I have a lot of polygons to combine it would be impossible
to do the work by hand.
I could of course make a module that is executed every time a polygone is
found that contains overlapping, which moves one of the nodes a little, but
this will take time to program.
Does anyone know a way to solve my problem ? ,maybee a MI built in function
that I have missed or maybe someone has already programmed the tool I am
looking for and is willing to share it ?

Best regards

RE: MI MapBasic File Size Exceed 64KB

1999-08-18 Thread Mapmail

Try using a plain text editor, that's all.
(I can recommend the text editor UltraEdit, you can download it from
www.ultraedit.com)

In the future, just write your program outside of MapBasic and then use the
'Compile from file' option in MapBasic.

Re: » MI Mi How to disable Delete key

1999-08-18 Thread owendavid

Hello

I came across a similar problem myself with Visual Foxpro and Mapinfo. The
solution is to issue a 'Set Table yourtablename UserEdit Off' command. This
will prevent the user making any changes to the table but allow your Delphi
program full access to it.

Hope this helps and please let me know how you get on.

Its a lovely little utility that I am sure I will find a use for! All it
lacks is an append function, because the tab files may not end with a common

Hi Peter, Pete and Steve and others,

Yet another way of doing the task!

You may be interested to know we have a free downloadable product called
Search
Plus that can do a search and replace function on a directory of files. It
was
initially designed to globally edit workspaces where tables have changed
location
but would work just as well for editing TAB files such as in your case. One
way would be to copy the TAB files to another directory. Then search for the
last few unique characters in TAB file and replace it with the same
characters
plus the raster settings. Rename the files and put them back in the original
directory.

If you would like a free copy of Search Plus, download it for our products
page

Sue.

RE: MI - Command line parameters?

1999-08-18 Thread Carl Nunn - Aligned Assets

You can't pass parameters to a main, as far as I am aware, but you can pick
up the parameters when mapInfo was run. Eg "c:\mapinfo\mapinfo.exe
c:\mapinfo\myapp.mbx john johnspassword". (Although this does have the
effect of leaving a nasty stain on the MRU).

The API to do this is:

Declare Function GetCommandLine Lib "kernel32" Alias "GetCommandLineA" () As
String

Subject: MI - Command line parameters?

Hi all,

I think I know the answer to this one already, but I have learned never to
pre-empt the knowledge of the list!

Is it possible to pass command-line parameters to an MBX? e.g. "Run
Application
Myapp.MBX 1 Hello 3.5"

As a bit of a dabble I tried "parameterising" the Main sub:

 declare sub Main(byval param1as Integer)

... but MapBasic didn't fall for it.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Cheers,
David Jerrard.

While registering the Oracle table in mapInfo it does so by

Re: MI Routing

1999-08-18 Thread Gareth Hardman

Following your recent query on MapInfo-l, I have pleasure introducing you to
Iso-Route from Saturn Technologies. Iso-Route is a family of DLL's which can
be called from within your MapInfo application.

You might also be interested to hear that we have finished the Beta Test
version of the Iso-Route OCX. This OCX has been designed to enable
developers to add a routing component to their MapX based application.
Whether you need to find the best route between points or find the drivetime
areas (isochrones), the Iso-Route OCX enables you to achieve this quickly
and very cheaply. We also have a demo application of the use of Iso-Route
(DLL's) in use with MapXtreme - providing the ability to point and click
routes across the Web.

With Iso-Route embedded in any application a developer can build an
application to:
 - create a topological network from almost any line network in MapInfo
format - no need to buy extra road data if you have it already
 - identify shortest or quickest route between points
 - create isochrones
 - add blocked roads, one way roads, global speed restrictions
 - make instantaneous queries of isochrones and routes

Purchasers of Iso-Route DLL's are supplied with MapBasic for a full example
of its functionality enabling quick and easy start up. Product resellers are
provided with the VB source code that builds a MapX application.

The OCX is available for download from special web site (or we can e-mail to
you if you can accept attachments of 2.5MB). Contact if you are interested
and I will either send you the files or the URL.

For further information on Iso-Route in general you might want to visit
http://www.saturn-technologies.com/isoroute.htm

Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.
