It's not DOT that the issue is with, in reading about making your own
it seems if they aren't
tested and approved this is an *out* for insurance companies who
might claim your lights
blinded the other driver etc etc with illegally made/non-approved
lamps thus voiding any coverage.

If an insurance company could think that, how would you think they
would jump?

while i agree that a complete retrofit would be more suitable than
just plugging in HID lamps, i'm skeptical that even swapping in complete
new housings (including lens, reflector, lamps, etc.,) would be legal,
regardless of how well it worked; i've yet to see the US DOT display the
capability to be able to think that way.

In Saigon you can visit the presidential palace and in the basement there is
a finnie, which was used a staff car. There is also a Huey parked on the
roof which was used by the then president to go for rides around the place.
Also there is a couple of T 56 tanks parked in the garden, not the real ones
that broke the gates down (one of the real ones is in the army museum in
Hanoi). However you can still see the tank track marks in the bitumen near
the gates.

Re: [MBZ] headlights query

2007-06-16 Thread ernest breakfield
Jim,

i think if you look into it further, you may find that while HID
lights are legal in all states as installed by the vehicle
manufacturers, there are no HID 'upgrade kits' that are legal in any state.
that said, most of the H4 Q-H lights aren't legal either, but that's
due more to the archaic DOT regulations than the fact that the HID
'upgrade' kits don't put the source of the light in the same place that
the original bulb did, and that the reflectors weren't designed for HID
light sources.

of course you can buy approved HID Fog and/or Driving lamps and
mount them separately, but regulations on use of those varies by state
as well; fortunately for those of us who travel, you only have to comply
with the regulations of the state the vehicle is registered in.

Jim and all,

The new Silver Stars do have a shorter rated life, but 1 year of "light" use
should not take one out! I would jump Sylvania on it.

Or you can step up to HID. I just went to HID (4300K) on my ML which used
the H7 55 watt halogen lamp for low beams. The ML lenses diffused the light
so well that it was often difficult to tell if they were even on.
The HIDs light up the Botts Dotts on the freeway with an incredible flat
beam! And they are legal in all states!

The HID uses just 35 watts and gives 3 times the light and 10 times the life
of Halogen. The HID Kits are available for nearly all lenses using
replaceable halogen bulbs. My set was just over $100 delivered from an Ebay
dealer.

I first installed a pair of HID lights on my dune buggy over 4 years ago.
My eyes were getting old and I needed more light than the four halogen lights
I was running. What a difference! The white light makes shadows on the
dunes a 1000 feet away. The Off-road boys run as many as 8 of these and their
investment runs in the thousands, just for good lighting. The design of HID
seems to permit them to take a lot of pounding without failure. There is no

The most common source oil on the right hand side of OM60x engines
(above the alternator) is the head gasket at the front right side. Six
of my 7 60x engines suffered to greater or lessor degree. There is NO
official fix other than to replace the head gasket (because of the
torque to yield specs) but in one case I did tighten the far front right
head bolt and the fast ooze diminished to a very slow ooze.

Hosing the engine down about once a month kept thongs under control. Oil
consumption was NEVER any problem (these engines used a qt in 4-7kmi).

Its much cheaper to do a combo Autotrader magazine ad and autotrader.com
ad. You get plenty of nationwide exposure. With our run till sold
packages, you run it as long as you need to.

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2007-06-16 Thread Zeitgeist
Jimbo, the typical leak points for those pumps are the bottom-plate seal,
the fuel shutoff arm seal and the black rack position sensor next to the
ALDA/ADA on the top-plate.

The bottom-plate seal can be replaced with the large oil filter o-ring from
an OM617--at least on the OM603 pumps. I believe the fuel shutoff o-ring
can be replaced with the small o-ring from an OM617 oil filter center post.
I don't know if you can fix the rack position sensor o-ring, without
disassembling the pump--I'd just loosen the top nut, then clean it with
starting fluid or brake cleaner, and lay a bead of gasket sealer, then
re-tighten the nut.

I've messed around with these pumps a fair amount, and I can't see any
reason to send them off for re-sealing.

What you describe sounds like a cracked head - well into the terminal
stage. Is coolant being lost?

The original head was a flawed design. Head problems were common on that
engine. About 20-25% have failed so fat. There is no repair. The head
must be replaced Used ones from newer 300-350 engines (the head design
was modified in 1989) are an inexpensive fix (~$2000 with labor) A new
head and the other parts needed (you will need new injectors,
prechambers, perhaps a new timer mechanism) will run closer to $4000.

[MBZ] Thinking about selling my 85 300TD

2007-06-16 Thread Royce Engler
Well guys, SWMBO has laid down the law. I bought my daughter's 2001
Expedition (75K) and my wife is taking a firm stance that the 300TD has to
go. I thought I'd give you guys first shot at it...

I am the third owner, and I bought it at 48K miles in 1990. It currently
has 299K on it, and I was using it as a daily driver on my 35 mile one way
commute...all interstate. Most days it's a pretty fast run (75-80) down
I-45 into North Houston, but there is the occasional SLOW day. I get about
23-24 MPG during the summer when I run A/C, and 24-25 during the winter.

A/C blows cold, although I've had a number of problems over the past few
years. I think they can be traced to my poor judgement in letting a local
idiot work on it a couple of years ago. I think he introduced a bunch of
problems that led to several compressor failures. I've since found an
outstanding indy who has cleaned it up and gotten it working well.

It is in pretty good shape body wise. It's been in 4 accidents...two rear
ends that resulted in replacing the rear hatch. Two on the front...one
required surgery on left front fender, and one where I ran into the back end
of a guest worker's pickup that had a load of 2x4s sticking out. The 2x4s
went right through the grille and ruptured the oil cooler and the radiator.
When the body shop put on a new hood, they used cheap paint, which looked ok
and matched at the time, but is now very faded. There are the usual dings
from pebbles, and there is an area under the spare tire that is rusty. I
think that was the result of a bottle of hydraulic oil that leaked without
me noticing.

Leveling system works fine and it rides nice and level. My indy says the
next thing to do with it is to rebuild the front end, which I did at 150K,
but that was 150K ago.

Interior is 22 years old and shows it. The usual dash cracks. I pulled a
driver's seat off of a 116 because the original had broken internals. Guess
they weren't made for 6'1" 260lb drivers. My next project was going to find
another driver's seat to rebuild. I still have all the MB-Tex from the
original seat...only the internals were broken.

Car is located in Conroe, TX It's been a helluva good car over the years,
but I guess it's time to move on and find it a home with an owner whose wife
will let him have it ;-).

Make me an offer...I know...$500 for Kaleb...

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2007-06-16 Thread Jim Cathey
After breakfast I tackled the alternator. I used a pipe wrench with
its jaws padded with old inner tube, _and_ a screwdriver stuck
in the vanes of the fan. With both of those in place I was able to
loosen the nut. (Either alone would not do the trick.) The body just
knocked apart once the screws were removed. The brushes, btw, were
definitely in need of replacement. The slip rings are grooved, but
I hope not unusably far. Getting the bearings off the shaft was a
frustrating exercise. Eventually I got a bearing separator and a
large three-jaw puller to do the job. I'll look into replacements for
these worn parts, it _ought_ to be significantly cheaper than a
rebuilt alternator. We'll see.

[MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology

2007-06-16 Thread Royce Engler
I bought a used Dell C400 on eBay in 2003...it has been a trooper. I've
worn out 3 hard drives, a battery, added memory, and multiple docking
stations (one at the office and a couple around the house...don't ask)
upgraded from W2K to XP (it still has the sticker on it that says "Designed
for XP"), and it keeps on going. I like: the small size, light weight,
bright screen, Dell support...even for a non-warranty machine. I don't
like: low powered USB 1.1, 9 pin serial port, no keyboard or mouse support,
but those are all functions of the age of the machine. It was built during
the transition period between old serial and new USB. I also bought a used
Dell C400 for my daughter on eBay...same story.

My company issues us Lenovo T60s. It's been bulletproof as well, and I like
having a second drive bay. Took me a while to figure out that the hard
drive is a SATA but I hadn't kept up with what they looked like. Given that
I was previously strongly anti-IBM (stinkPad, anyone???) I have been
pleasantly surprised.

Re: [MBZ] selling cars on ebay

2007-06-16 Thread LarryT
Hi Kaleb,
Speaking of selling cars - do you ever sell cars at local auctions? We
have a auction 2x a week not far from here - there's others in the area
also - but this one is open to the public and I expect a lot of local used
car dealers buy cars there.

Any experience there? I have a Van with a Wheelchair lift - pretty limited
market - that hasn't gotten much attention in the local paper, shopper or on
AutoTrader.Com. Some will say its overpriced but it's exactly in line with
similar vehicles - plus, it has a value to me which I won;t go below. The
engine is super - I could pull the engine and save it for the Cobra I hope
to build some day. Then try to sell the lift seperately - but I'm just
thinking out loud.

My question is what do you think of local auctions?

Re: [MBZ] selling cars on ebay

2007-06-16 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
Have you priced placing a classified ad in a major newspaper recently?
Ebay starts looking pretty cheap real quick when you consider the
exposure and the fact that things are being bid up by, in many cases ,
people with more money than brains, when you see how many items that run
past a buy it now, going for more than retail on a new item.

I sold a boat on ebay a while back and cringed at the fees, but it
wasn't any more than I had already spent on local ads with no calls, and
I wound up getting what I was looking for on the thing, so I guess I
can't complain too much.

Re: [MBZ] selling cars on ebay

2007-06-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
Sunil,

You'd think so but it's not quite true.

With home sellers, those who sell a few items:
Even eBay has limits to what they can charge before they chase off
customers. Plus there are other on-line auction sites that are just waiting
for eBay to stumble and some of these sites process a reasonable volume of
on-line auctions.

The fees that eBay charges may seem high but when you consider the market
exposure, the fees become very reasonable. That is unless you sell a $10.00
item on eBay that you can easily sell locally for $10.00. When pricing for
eBay sales, you need to factor in the additional cost & make sure that the
expanded market exposure will support the additional selling price. In other
words, that $10.00 item needs to sell on eBay for $12.00. If you have
something unique, collectable or not likely sold locally then you should do
well with eBay. Most sellers don't understand this & ask too little for an
item or they try & sell common items that really have no business on eBay.

With retail sellers:
In addition to what I stated above, retail sellers usually have their own
web store and possibly a retail location. With a business, it's more of a
cost verses gain calculation. In my case, I'd have to hire another Employee
to generate the sales that eBay generates. EBay marketing costs less!

By the way, we have 2 on-line stores, one on eBay & the other a on-line (non
eBay) store:

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2007-06-16 Thread Jim Cathey
Friday, June 15, 2007

I cleaned the engine off some. Messy, and used up all my brake
cleaner, gotta get some more. (I wonder what the case price is?) I
also sprayed on a bunch of engine degreaser, but I'm not in a place
where I can use the hose for a rinse. That stuff makes everything all
slimy and drippy, unlike the brake cleaner. I may have to push the
car outside for cleaning at some point. Almost everything below the
head line is oily, greasy, and/or dirty, most of it quite caked on. I
can, however, visualize how leaking valve covers, chain tensioners,
power steering, and injection pumps could be responsible for it all,
so I'm not going to blame the head just yet!

I removed the dead AC compressor, and its mounting bracket. (The
latter for cleaning purposes.) I used more rubber stoppers on the
exposed lines to prevent the incursion of moisture and dirt. There
are no obvious signs of 'Black Death', but I haven't yet looked
closely for AC debris. The exposed O-rings are black, not green or
blue; I'll probably put in the green ones I got in an AC ring kit at
Harbor Freight when it was on sale. ($10 for 224 or so of mixed
sizes.)

I put the IP in a box for show and tell purposes.

...At lunch I took the pump to the shop. The woman manning the desk
couldn't tell me anything other that one of the guys would look at it.
(They were all out.) I also stopped and bought a case of brake
cleaner, $2 a can on sale rather than the usual $3.

...And an hour later my wife called and said they'd called and could
do nothing with it. So back I went, all the way downtown. (I was
attacked by a 'chicken' during the freeway trip, which was quite
startling. I'd rolled the windows down and the buffeting dislodged
the Chicken Wagon's mascot from the first aid box and it came flying
forward at my head, nest, plastic eggs, and all. The raffia nest made
quite a racket as it rattled forwards at me and then swirled around in
the back of the car. Good thing I don't have a weak heart!) The pump
guy said that they never saw those particular pumps and suggested Coast
Diesel in California, a place I'd even heard of, though it may be under
a different name now. I'm not going to do that, as it was running well.
But we chatted a bit about my potential leaks. He rummaged in a box
and found a big green O-ring that looked like it would fit the flange.
He gave me about four of them, in fact, and said it was their standard
seal. He also gave me a few various sized small O-rings to try on the
shutoff shaft seal. He noted that it was quite loose, and that the
whole pump would have to come apart in order to properly fix that.
The bushing is worn, but he thought I might be able to jam the O-ring
in to help stem the leak somewhat, and pointed out that there was oil
sign on the body that indicated it was leaking from there pretty
heavily. He warned against letting that shaft push back into the case
while the lever was off as the pump would then have to come apart to
get it back out. I have the dead 4-cylinder pump in the woods I can
play with to learn on. There was no charge for the O-rings and
advice, he just asked that I bring him some regular business when I
could! I appreciate the courtesy, and will of course throw what
business I can his way. (Of course, everybody I know with the VP44
has _already_ had their pump replaced. But I suppose if it happens
once it could happen again.)

Saturday, June 16, 2007

More engine cleaning. Four cans of brake cleaner later I was woozy,
and decided I'd had enough for now. (The garage doors and windows
were all open, and it was a low-VOC non-chlorinated product, but
still...) Things are a lot cleaner nonetheless, though I'm not done.
Along the way I removed the alternator and its bracket, and placed
both brackets in the solvent tank after first giving them a good
scraping. My 'replacement' alternator is, of course, not at all the
right thing. I'm going to take the worn one apart to see if it looks
like I can replace the bearings myself, and to see if it's worth doing
at all. Nothing I would do should ruin any core value it has.

It's an assembled unit (not made by a major
manufacturer) consisting of a Wisconsin VD4D (I think)
diesel engine and an unknown alternator.

Wisconsin engines are pretty bulletproof, so it's
probably a good deal for someone if they can get it on
the cheap. Probably no larger than 10-12kW, based on
that engine.

Amazing what people consider classic.
Oh sure theres a MB finny here, a vintage Thunderbird there but theres also an

Anyway, some stuff I thought was cool and people might be interested in, delete
as needed.

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/car/346900709.html - Cheap SL

does "all major systems replaced" mean?

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/car/349070298.html - Cool MB motorhome, but I
don't believe it gets 25mpg. How can a huge breadbox get 25mpg?

exploring except for "has rocker/fender rust"

[MBZ] Suspension Pump Repair

2007-06-16 Thread Trampas
I finally order the correct O-ring for my leaking suspension pump on the
1991 560SEL. I took some pictures and wrote a how to that I have sent to
Kaleb such that he can post it somewhere.

Note I called a couple of different Mercedes experts and none of them knew
anything about the hidden O-ring on the suspension pump. They said that they
replace the one o-ring and shaft seal and if the pump still leaks they order
a new one for $1200 new or $800 rebuilt.

When I replaced the hidden O-ring all my leaks stopped. Of course it took me
some time to find out where to order the O-ring and actually get it, but the
$0.80 for the new O-ring verse $800 makes well worth the wait.

Re: [MBZ] WOW! Gas mileage

2007-06-16 Thread Peter Frederick
The difference is quite real, especially in a diesel -- gassers tend to
burn more fuel at light load than diesels so, so actual hp output has
more effect on diesel consumption.

When the speed limit was lower on the interstate, I routinely got 32
mpg with the Volvo or the 300D, both almost exactly the same weight
(the Volvo has more drag, it's a 740 boxmobile). When the speed limit
went up (or I got stuck in high speed heavy traffic, like going to
Florida), milage drops to about 29.

With the new head gasket (need to get the new head on to completely fix
the combustion leaks), I now get 32 mpg if I keep my foot light (that
is, no significant turbo boost) and don't need much AC. Milage drops
to about 30 with heavy AC use or a heavy foot on my 35 mile commute.
I've not made a highway trip since doing the head gasket, probably
won't until I get the new head on as I have to leave the radiator cap
loose.

2 or 3 mpg is quite a lot of fuel, it annoys me endlessly that people
persist in driving fast and hard for no good reason.

Peter

[MBZ] Headlights query

2007-06-16 Thread Glenn Brown
After a recent extended interstate trip (Note: I tend to drive the
interstates with my headlights on day and nite no matter the weather
conditions. I believe it's safer.), I noticed one of my Sylvania sealed
beam halogen headlights was burned out. The last time I replaced one of the
headlights was 6-8 years ago and I was surprised that the new Sylvania seald
beam replacement headlight at Autozone/Advance was only ~ $10. I seem to
remember them being in the $20+ area.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology

2007-06-16 Thread Allan Streib
Years ago I had a PowerMac (this was the 603 PowerPC processor,
pre-dating the G3 even). I had some software called Virtual PC that
let me run DOS and Windows (Win95 at the time) programs. It really
worked well. I could use the inkjet printer on my Mac to print from
Windows programs, even cut/paste between Windows and Mac apps.

Both Parallels and BootCamp require an Intel-based Mac. If you end up
with a PowerPC mac, you'll need Virtual PC (now a Microsoft product).

In theory, you still have to buy windows. I have a volume license,

[MBZ] selling cars on ebay

2007-06-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I do not often sell cars on ebay but sometimes I do. From what I
understood it was $40 to list a vehicle and that was it. Today I get a
deal about selling a vehicle for $1 for 2 days only. So I check it out
thinking I will put a car on there just for the hell of it. I get to
reading and it says you pay $1 insertion fee then a $50 transaction fee
at the end?!?! So I get to reading the regular fees and insertion fee
is regularly $40, and you have the $50 transaction fee at the end. So
it costs $90 to sell a car on ebay?? Anybody know if this is
something that has changed because I swear any other time it was just
the $40. I thought $40 was expensive but $90, that is insane. And I
thought just the fees for selling other stuff was ridiculous.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Dipping My Toe in the Pool of Technology

2007-06-16 Thread LWB250
BootCamp only allows you to set up a separate
partition which allows you to boot into Windows (which
you do have to have a separate license for, yes.) In
other words, you either boot into Windows or boot into
OS X, you can't switch back and forth.

Parallels is virtualization software that allows you
to switch back and forth between OSs, e.g., you are
running both operating systems at the same time and
can move back and forth without rebooting.

There are some arrangements coming that will allow
Windows-based programs to run under OS X, mostly
games, but they won't even require that Windows be
installed on the machine.

I use BootCamp on my son's 17" C2D iMac so he can
continue to use the Windows based games he owns. It
works amazingly well, and according to him, better
that Windows for some of the titles.

On our recent vacation to Maine I kept it to 65mph at almost all times and my
Dodge Dakota 5.2 v8 turned in 20mpg which is pretty good for what it is. Day to
day around town its more like 15.
If I keep the 190D down to 65mph it'll do 43mpg pretty reliably. If I hold it
to 80 its more like 37mpg.

Alot of people think slowing down is bunk but in most cases it really does save
fuel. On my commute I figure I save $6-$7 a week. Might not seem like much but
thats ~$312 a year.
Plus if I drive slower I find that I don't get there alot later than I would
have (couple minutes maybe on my 55 mile commute) and I feel more refreshed and
less stressed when I do arrive.

I have made a number of local all-highway trips
running at 55 mph as opposed to the 70 mph that is the
posted limit. I keep my mileage and records
religiously, and in comparison with driving at the
speed limit, I gain about 2-3 mpg by driving 55 mph.

I love walking through the mall and the guy says "I can beat your current cell
plan" and I say oh yeah? I get PAID $500 a month to have mine...
The looks are priceless.

And its true, its a work phone and I get paid extra to do 24x7 support which is
why I have it.

Re: [MBZ] Welding, was: 84 190D 2.2 For Sale

2007-06-16 Thread Curt Raymond

Wierd huh? I was working on a tractor seat and couldn't get decent penetration
at the slower setting. Then I switched back to the sheet metal I was playing
with for some practice and found I was doing alot better.
I was able to fill most of the holes I burnt before and even lay some beads
that didn't look like a cross eyed monkey made them.

Hi Curt,
I have the same MIG & found the same thing about wire speed and metal
thickness. I thought that was backwards - but thar's how it works - as
you
found.

I know a little, but by no means an expert. I imagine you'll get some
people who know more. But if not, I might be better than nothing...

I was very impressed with the 400W of high beams I had in the
450 SL we just sold. Relays, and regular motorcycle bulbs in
the Hella E-code rounds. Magnificent, we called them the deer-
slayers. http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/JSLlights.html
