Re: [MBZ] CL moron of the day

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
I used my signed personal copy of John's book to do my research when I was
looking at these cars. For some reason, there are just tons of 75s and 76s
around this area. I'll bet there are a few on CL in Tampa right now.

Nearly every one I looked at would have needed all of the engine compartment
rubber bits, mainly all the little fuel ones, replaced due to heat damage.
When I would inspect these cars I was afraid to touch any of them for fear one
would crack and the resulting fuel leak would make the thing go up in flames.

Be like the settlers on the prairie. Get a pellet stove and make cat

2013-01-03 Thread Peter Frederick
Both front fenders perforated, rear quarters iffy, floor is bad in the
rear, sills getting rough.

It's bad enough I'd not bother to attempt a restoration, but the
running gear is all good except the engine block is cracked. PO left
water in it over the winter. I acquired a spare engine in running
condition from a 74 SL, needs cams, distributor, and exhaust manifolds
changed but otherwise ready to do.

Transmission is fine, rear end has a bit of a whine, probably needs
fluid changed.

Unknown milage because the odometer had not moved for years before I
got it.

Wrong calipers on the front, need the heavy duty ones.

I have a replacement Becker Mexico with tape player in unknown
condition, too.

Currently has home-made vinyl seat covers in front that I put
together, I have a mostly completed set in navy blue leather.

In today's day or even the mid nineties, with email lists and forums just
coming online, owning a car with fuel injection probably isn't as bad as when
there was an information void. I had an L-Jetronic injected BMW in the eighties

[MBZ] Block Heater Question

2013-01-03 Thread W140
Well the element doesn’t have an infinite life, but with that being said, when
I worked in the High Arctic we would leave the vehicles plugged in all the time
we were not driving.
But just as a matter of economics if you were not going to drive it for a week
I would plug it in 24 hours before I started it.
You don’t mention the Outside air temperature (OAT) but if economics is not a
problem and your talking well below zero I would plug it in and leave it.
So to answer your question: The element doesn’t have an infinite life but no,

I thought about trying to wrap it in something, but was in a hurry to get going

started in earnest, then snow after it got dark.

I would have been happier with a boot torn into two pieces, rather than totally
removed. The old tie rod they gave me still had half a boot on it. If the other
half was still on the rack it could have shielded the inner joint from direct
spray.

The agreement was for all old parts to be with the car. When I got home I
realized the only thing they'd given me was the inner tie rod with over 1/4" of
play in it. I didn't get the transmission conductor plate and valve spring, or
even the two extra dipstick tube covers after I had Rusty deliver three of them
to the seller.

My 250LWB had 15" steel wheels. I chose them instead of the 14" bundts that
were offered by the seller.

I think the car handled and drove a lot better with 15" wheels than the 123s I
had previously that had the 14" bundts.

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
We had a "shoe truck" that came to the plant at Kohler once a month. They sold
shoes for the employees on the factory floor. I wandered in one time and asked
if they had any dress safety shoes, which they did. I bought a pair of black
steel toed wing tips. Not sure what brand they were, but I only had to wear
them on the factory floor so they got very little wear.

There was a union steward who was a real dick to all of the white collar
employees. He would walk up and step on the toes of your shoes to see if you
were wearing steel toes - if not, he would file a complaint with the safety
committee.

I told a couple of people I worked with about my new shoes, who then followed
me out to the factory floor. Sure enough, Mr. Dick came walking up and stepped
on the toe of one of my shoes. He had a really strange look on his face when he
realized that I had steel toed shoes.

I tossed a shop towel at him and told him he owed me a shine.

I have to concur about the Allen Edmonds. I have a pair in cordovan leather-
not the color but the leather apparently made from horse hide or something and
let me tell you they are tough!
And don't laugh but during my pimpin' days back in Boston during the late 90's,
I bought a couple of Gucci shoes. They were also made from cordovan leather.
Wow are those shoes tough. I wore them clubbing, to bars, in the rain, snow and
sleet and they held up incredibly well- better than the Allen- Edmonds. Looking
back, I am horrified at what I paid for those shoes but I now realize that they
were a lifetime purchase. I Never have to buy another nice shoe again. For
everyday shoes I now pay $20-30 for whatever Timberland shoe is on clearance at
the Factory Outlet in Freeport, Maine.

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
I used to buy brands like Florsheim and Bush/Nunn, which typically lasted me a
year under normal wear in a business environment. Maybe $100 for a good pair,
less if I could find them on sale.

One of the things about A-Es that can't be quantified is that they never have
to break in. That is, they are comfortable from the first time you put them on
- no breaking in, no sore back of the heels, etc., that you have with other
shoes. I don't know if it's the quality of materials or the way they are made,
but this is one part of A-Es that I have never found in another brand of shoes.

Allen-Edmonds are made in Port Washington, WI, and Belgium, WI (little town up
the road from Port Washington.)

Expense is relative. If you take the example I gave on the other list, I have
been wearing a shoe that cost me $300 over its life for over 20 years. Do that
math. It cost me $15/year. For that I'll pay big $$ up front.

I tend to load it, I wanted the extra load rating. But I don't
feel I sacrificed to get the load rating.

Oh, and Mitch found them a few years ago when I was looking.

Chinese aftermarket that look exactly like the real thing. I have a set on my
'91 560SEC and they balanced out just like Genuine as well. I have a very
smooth ride and they look great. They come with lugs and center caps which
Mercedes does not include at 4 times the price.

Not really.

The battery was probably on its last legs anyway. Figure 5-7 year life
for a battery. Prorated warranty covers five years and the last two are
gravy if it lives that long. At least that is the life cycle I am
getting out of my cars for the most part. Eight years is a long in the
tooth battery and ready for exchange.

Well, I THOUGHT that was the number of the rims we now have on our

I went out and checked and saw that the number actually is
210 401 06 02, the same number Mitch inquired about.

Not really.

The battery was probably on its last legs anyway. Figure 5-7 year life for a
battery. Prorated warranty covers five years and the last two are gravy if it
lives that long. At least that is the life cycle I am getting out of my cars
for the most part. Eight years is a long in the tooth battery and ready for
exchange.

Not a one.

Maybe the CDI engines but probably not until you get to blue tech. The cars
are pretty forgettable in design and reliability. When they divested from
Chrysler, the quality began to increase to the point it was worth investing in
a benz once more. Sadly, they remain nothing special to look at.

We like the older ones because we recall seeing them when younger or lusting
after them as young adults. Maybe a parent or grandparent had one and we have
fond memories. If we think of older folks in a benz now, it is not going to be
a diesel and having not spread the diesel engine throughout the line, you do
not have the depth of models to chose from. All the benz from that period are
E class. The 210 was just ugly

Re: [MBZ] R107 wheel upgrades

2013-01-03 Thread clay monroe
I am pretty sure you can find all sorts of tire from any diameter, the trick is
to find them with the performance speed ratings needed. The smaller wheel cars
of the past decade are probably going to be fine with an S rated tire, which is
about the best I can find for the 14". Not good enough for the application I
have. SO, you would have to look for expensive vintage/classic tires to keep a
20 year old car rolling.

Most of the little toyota or honda cars with small wheels are not expected to
stay out of the pull a part after 20 years on the road.

Re: [MBZ] R107 wheel upgrades

2013-01-03 Thread clay monroe
I am a cheap SOB, so not ready to put good cash out the door for bigger wheels
and then more rubber. Bundts could probably be found used that I can refurb if
I want to wait. New rims are too far out of budget and the compromise of
bucket of cash to make the car look wrong versus bucket of cash to keep it
original are what I am facing today.

rated. I was rather surprised they had nothing in H rating.
Altimax RT in 98T - extra load rating are probably a good all around choice for
$71 plus shipping for 205/70 tires.

However, stepping up to late W126 wheels and 205/65-15 tires finds 55 models
available, at prices starting at $63 for Fuzion H rated touring tires.

Aye, and there's the rub! How do you know who does quality repairs before
you have them repair your shoes?

That's good to know. I checked out the Bates on the website Rick
mentioned and found they are $114.95, while the Mephisto Abels are
$429.95. For right now, being unemployed, I think I'll stick with the
Bates -- they are used but like new.

Re: [MBZ] OT shoes and repair

2013-01-03 Thread Dan Penoff
Two words: Allen Edmonds.

My Dad was an A-E guy all of his life, and I often hassled him about his
expensive shoes. I grew up and got smart.

The trick is to not buy them at list, but wait for the sales. Get on their
online mailing list. They had several online sales in the past month, which
are now expired. Find one of their retailers in your area and get fitted so
you know your size - this saves a lot of hassles with having to guess and
return shoes purchased online.

I wouldn't even have a lot of qualms about buying them at list. Here's why:

I have 6-7 pairs of A-E shoes in my closet right now. I have two more that
they refused to recraft, mainly because of their age. Of the pairs I still
wear, the NEWEST pair was purchased in 1996, with the others ranging in age all
the way back to 1991-2 or thereabouts.

I had the privilege of living in Port Washington, WI, where A-Es are made. If
you're lucky enough to be in the area, the first week of July is their "tent
sale". This is the annual meeting for their salespeople, and they put up a
huge tent in front of the plant where they sell discontinued and factory
seconds at as much as 50% off. The salespeople staff the tent, so every person
you speak to knows the shoes better than any retail store clerk will.

The sales people will often point out why a particular shoe is a second, and
believe me, the stuff they showed me was imperceptible to me and probably every
other person who looked at them.

Most of my shoes have been recrafted at least once, which costs around $100
depending on the package you choose.

I can take a pair of brown tasseled wingtips I bought in 1994 for around $200
(a $400 shoe new) and add in the recrafting I had done around 2001 and I have a
shoe that cost me $300 that has lasted close to 20 years (and is still going.)

I do want some new black loafers and maybe another brown shoe, so I am planning
on making a trip to Port Washington in July. As far as I'm concerned, it's
money well spent.

On a related note, one of the finest shoe repair guys in the nation is about 40
minutes away from me in Lakeland, FL. He recrafted one of my pairs of A-Es for
the same price and did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him for any serious
shoe repair.

My suggestion. If you have found a competent cobbler, in todays
marketplace, give him a huge tip, adopt him/her as your long lost child,
and NEVER let them move away or retire.

Well built shoes are becoming more rare every day. People to repair them
properly and keep them well built are even more rare.

Good Luck !!

Lt. Don had a FB post the other day on some shoes he bought second hand. I
don't think they are dress shoes, but the manufacturer may make some.
"Going to start breaking in a new pair of shoes
tomorrow. My wife got them for $25 from a friend of hers, who was
selling them for her son. Never been worn. Pretty heavy but seem to be
well constructed and should last a while. Since I'd never heard of the
brand (Mephisto) did a little research. Found the exact shoe. Looks like
 I saved about $400."

I have a pair of Florsheims I have had for 24 years, though I do not wear
them every day. I took them to a shoe repair place in Santa Fe a couple
of years ago. That place restitched some of the seams and then resoled
them. Unfortunately, in trimming the sole to the size of the shoe, they
ground off too much on one of the shoes and the stitching on the toe is
already wearing through. With that and the stitching on the top of the
shoes failing, I may not have them repaired again.

I was given a pair of Bates Uniform Footware shoes and am considering
using them as my dress shoes. I just have to figure out how to sterilize
them before I start wearing them (not knowing if the fellow from whom I
got them had problems with Athlete's foot).

The shoe trees I have were a Christmas present 44 years ago.
