[MBZ] '08 CLK 350 Electric Cooling Fan Update

2014-07-24 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
When the car is started first thing in the morning, the electric fan
works/AC works. When I restart the car when it is at normal operating temp,
the white (not red) coolant alarm is in and the electric fan will not come
on. This, of course, locks out the AC compressor but everything else works
fine.

What do I need to replace?

Re: [MBZ] W124 Lower Control Arms and Ball joints - cost comparison

2014-07-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That's great, Mike!

I was chiding Larry because I know all too well that people will often ask
trusted resources like Gary for information and then go off and find the items
they're looking for elsewhere.

As a former owner and employee of a service and parts business, I was often
quite taken aback when people would do this. If someone comes to me to ask
questions of me as a subject matter expert only to take that information and
use it to patronize another supplier I would not help them again.

Some might consider this not a nice thing to do, but for those who would, think
about this the next time you do it:

I spent years of my time and thousands of dollars to acquire the knowledge I
have in specific areas. If I choose to share that information, I should receive
something in kind in exchange. That might be shared knowledge of another
discipline or even something tangible in some cases. It might be shared with
the expectation of return business, for example.

When I share that knowledge with someone and they use it elsewhere when I could
potentially benefit from it, and they know this, I view it as stealing.

Maybe that's harsh, and I would agree that it is to some extent. However, when
someone does this they're affecting my livelihood.

When I find a supplier or business who values me as a customer and willingly
assists me, I'll honor that commitment by patronizing their establishment.

Gary is a good example of this. My local MB dealer is the same way. Both of
them will tell me if they think I can get a part elsewhere for less, for
example. As a result of this, I have no problem paying what might be a
slightly higher price for the "right" part.

Gary will regularly tell me about a part that I can get from the dealer at the
same aggregate price he could sell it to me. Brake discs are a good example of
this.

My local dealer will do the same.

Sorry for the rant, and this is not a defense of Gary specifically. Because I
have experienced similar situations in my former business life I'm really
sensitive about it. When you're one of the people responsible for the well
being of your livelihood and that of your employees, you get defensive about
anything that takes money out of your pockets

Yep, that's what they do - just melt in place (during a warming period,
anyway) and drop debris (moraine) wherever it happens to be, not move
backward, unless there's a quake to cause what was high on the slope under
the glacier before the quake to be low after the quake.

When my 1977 Saab was made, the spec was SAE 70 gear oil, I forget the GL

By the mid 1980s, the recomendation had changed to SAE 30 (or maybe 10W30, can't
remember for sure) motor oil.
IIRC, it shifted a bit nicer with the proper (hard to find) gear oil than with
5W30 M1 in it.

Chrysler's 1980s transaxles took motor oil in early years, then Dexron II or III
later. AFAIK there was no mechanical change when the fluid changed. IIRC, my
1989 Horizon was happier with 5W30 M1 than with the Dexron that the factory put
in it.

Re: [MBZ] W123 parts

2014-07-24 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
This thread causes me to want to share an anecdote. I had a W123 240D that
I had for a short time. Seems like it was just over a year. Had just over
300K on the clock, if memory serves, when the crankshaft broke. So, a local
guy I had been talking to had a W123 300D that was basically nothing but
rust, but a good engine, he was daily driving. My chassis was nearly rust
free, the only rust was in the front quarters really so good chassis +
good engine = car stays on the road that much longer. Couple months ago I
was in the pull-apart looking for some parts for the Sportage I was driving
and saw a blue W123 chassis, missing two of the doors, the hood and a
quarter panel.

Hmm ... mine was a blue W123, so I had a car just like it.

So for nostalgia I'm looking around it, and see the rip in the seat I did
on accident. The broken place on the dash that mine had ... this was *my*
W123.

So the guy says, after sending him an email, "Yeah, it turned out to be too
much trouble so I'm just driving the one I already had."

*sighs*

There is nothing quite like finding the car you had hoped would be fixed,
stripped instead.

On a related note, my truck died last weekend, so I'm suddenly in the
market for a car. Anyone have a decent looking, great running car taking up
too much space in the driveway?

Great color combo, provided the interior isn't oogy.

The $3800 price - probably depends on the maintenance history. If it
"drives good", mileage is accurate, and "blows ice cold" then worth
negotiating over.

Currently I've got Redline MTL and MT-90 mixed in the Jetta 50/50 but I'm
thinking to switch it to all MTL this fall. The MTL is a little thinner and
should shift easier in the cold. The factory VW stuff is very thin and can be
noisy in older cars. The mix wasn't bad last winter but would be stiff for the
first couple shifts at below zero temps.
I want to change again because the stuff that came out last fall was nasty and
smelled bad. I've put 15,000 miles on the car and the trans is way quieter
now...

All that non-factory chrome is pretty tacky. I'll bet it has the no-dust
wheel inserts, so the front rotors are warped. I'd ditch those chrome
wheels in a heartbeat, if not properly done then the alloy base metal can
turn into chalky dust.

Other than that, very low miles for that car, if truly "garage kept" then
the paint should be fantastic and the interior won't be baked out.

I would probably shoot for $2500 if everything was solid and intact. Sitting
for long periods like that is not a good thing and would play into the
negotiations big time.

The seller doesn't appear to have a lot of interest in the car based on what
was said, and the price may be coming from the owner. We'll see.

I hate the flat multi-hole wheels and would much rather have bundts, but you
take the good with the bad. Note that it has California plates. That's not
good, as CA is a total PITA to get registrations and titles from.

I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow after work if I can set something up
with the seller.

I'm thinking this could be a good car for the elder son, as the 300E, bless
it's heart, is getting a bit long in the tooth and is going to need some major
work in the future. I would rather part with it intact than have to patch it
up to sell it.

Re: [MBZ] Am I Nutz?

2014-07-24 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
That all makes sense. That is a good car, lowish miles, looks in good
shape ext/int but you will have to point out how these old dizzels like
to be driven, sitting like that is not good, rubber deteriorates, tires
are probably at least 10yr old (that's $500 right there for a new set).
You might want to look at the fuel, maybe drain at bit at the clear
filter, oil, etc. Check suspension front and back for any indications
of rubber gone bad, squeaks, clunks, etc. Take a jack to lift up the
front corners, rattle the wheels to check BJs and bearings. Of course
the AC, which is likely still R12 which might or might not be an issue
depending on if you want to use replacements. Those wheels are later
additions? They look like SEL wheels but the chrome? Wonder if he
still has the bundts if it came with them?

If you could get it for $2500 that would be a nice car, last one I
bought I went to $3k as it was in pretty good shape and that was a few
years back, had all the service records since new. If he has had it for
a month and not sold, offer the $2500 see what happens.

Good luck! I love that color.

By the mid 1980s, the recomendation had changed to SAE 30 (or maybe 10W30,

IIRC, it shifted a bit nicer with the proper (hard to find) gear oil than with

Chrysler's 1980s transaxles took motor oil in early years, then Dexron II or

Exactly.

CA likes to hold cars hostage if the registration isn't current, no matter what
the reason.

When I bought my 1962 300SE out of a CA estate, I ended up using a bogus title
service to get it clear of the nearly $2k in back fees CA wanted before they
would release the title.

I took the car along the next day to make sure the key worked all around,
and to get some spares.

I asked if he had rebuilt the lock. He did not. The PO had used graphite
to keep his key turning in the lock, and that had gummed it up something
fierce. A good blasting with Tri-flow to remove the snot got it back to
working order just fine.

Ok, not that expensive, but much like the 70's TV show, the ignition
cylinder was rebuilt. 1974 450 SL

I had ordered a factory tumbler and key from the local dealer, per
instruction from Classic Center. That was April. I got impatient and
found a complete lock cylinder off fleabay and had my indy install that
when I was able to get the locked up tumbler to turn. I had intended the
hardware to be back up if the old one had to be drilled. I have been
driving on two keys since May. One for the doors, the other to light
off.

I was thinking. A very dangerous thing at times. "where in tarnation is
my dang tumbler the Black Forest Elves are supposed to be making?" I
need to contact the dealer to see if it got lost, but, being a lazy butt
and it being hot outside, and I am not in the mood to pick up the phone,
and would rather be lied to my face, than my ear, I have not done that.
Maybe in the morrow.

I recalled information about a local lock shop that can rebuild the
tumbler and make me a coded key for it. That sounds interesting, I thunk
to myself. I have about seven gallons of waste oil that needed disposal,
and the FLAPS was sort of on the way, so I packed up the dead lock set
and took it to the shop.

Feller at the shop grabs it and scurried off to the back with not much
verbal interplay. I stood about wondering what magic he intended, or had
he absconded with my lock and was now posting it on Fleabay. A few
minutes later he came back and said it was fairly mucked up. Four
thirty. Forty-five.

I heard $430. ?? Forty five? A range of price? Nope. He would charge
me $45 and have it ready by 1630. SWEET! Steel key and coded to the
car. Half the cost of the GERMAN tumbler. I jumped on it.

When I picked it up, he assured me it was fully functional, but I should
test it on the doors, just for good measure. If it was not good, bring
it back and he would adjust it. I tried it on the doors. Driver door
was good, Passenger and trunk, not so much. I will be driving the car
there in the morning, after I get the bread dough out from rising over
night in the ice box.

The '87 300D I stripped parts from in the Richmond pick-n-pull still had
the trap oxidizer, #14 head, ~350,000 miles on the odometer.

I found no obvious reason for it to be junked, I would guess that the
transmission gave up. One of the lines for the turbo boost signal to the
ALDA was broken, so it probably was underpowered. Maybe the head was
cracked and it was drinking coolant. It had some fancy aftermarket radio /

After I bought my '95 E300 and Rich helped me drag it home, I needed about
a year to get it running, finally went to register it and was expecting to
have to pay the back year. Guy at the DMV counter asked why I had not
registered it after I bought it, I told him I needed some time to fix it so
it was sitting in my garage for a while, he was able to waive the
back-registration on the spot, easy-peasy. I was quite happy about that.

Curious. The manual transmissions I'm familiar with are either
old, heavy duty, or Mercedes. And the W123 all use Dexron II for
the manual transmission.

My GM 4-speed pickup (117 mm) requires 80W90 GL-5 gear oil. The
big truck transmissions I'm familiar with use either 50W or
75-80W90 gear oil.

I just checked my '85 GM factory service manual. The 3-speed and
the small 4-speed use DexronII. The big 117mm 4-speed uses 80W90.

In Missouri, they only care about delay of title transfer. Once
the title is transferred, they don't care how long it is before it
is licensed.

But the original comment sounds like CA doesn't want to allow a
title to transfer out of the state unless all the missing years of
registration is paid. Yikes!

Yes, if it all goes well, no problem to do it quickly.
BUT when working with old parts that have been under there for a while
and have suffered the abuse that comes with the job, they can sometimes
be difficult to take apart.
I suppose the shops use big impact guns and heat etc but I don't have a
rattle gun that will do that sort of thing and am reluctant to use a lot
of heat in some areas.

I remember popping a ball joint out of the lower control arm on a 1998
Ford F150.
I had all of thebig C clamp type press parts assembled on the vehicle
and my longest breaker bar on it and was pulling for all I was worth
with no success. I looked around my garage and found a 4 foot length of
pipe and slipped that on the end and still pulled for all I was worth
until it popped. I wondered if the breaker bar was going to give up but
it did not.

Putting the new one back in was no problem.

basically never wear out - at least not the bar itself. IMO the big

Re: [MBZ] Am I Nutz?

2014-07-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Florida has a one time fee that applies to any and all vehicles being titled
and registered in the state. I believe it's something like $220 per vehicle or
thereabouts.

What they don't tell you is that of you have ever registered a vehicle in the
state in the past and not surrendered the plate, it sits in limbo in the system
and never goes away.

I never surrendered the plate on my 1984 300SD.

When I moved back in 2010 that old plate saved me $660 thanks to a sharp DMV
employee.

The term "big truck" to me means class 7 or greater. The 117mm
transmission (also called SM465) wasn't ever used in those. It was
used in 1/2 ton (class 1), and maybe through the 2-ton (class 3) -
which are typically referred to as "light duty". So "big" as
compared to the mini-pickups, but not really a "big truck". *smiles*

not

sure the CDI's were available in North America before 2005.

In 2007 through 2009 they went to the Blue-Tech V-6 engine, which are
supposed to be very nice, but certainly more expensive.

The straight six's of 2005-06 seem bullet-proof and powerful. But this
car

also has SBC brakes, which is an electronically controlled braking system
of controversial reliability. The post 2007's have a more conventional
braking system. I remember the Chrysler affiliation ending in 2006.

I bought a 2006 CDI, with 100k mi, last October. So far I'm really glad
I
bought it. It is the nicest and by far the fasted MB diesel I've owned

in
25k+ miles, I've had no problems. I've owned Chryslers before, and this
MB

has done nothing "Chrysler like" to me yet.

I did a fair amount of research before buying one. Found the gasoline
versions of the W211 were plagued with engine failures and other problems
causing prices noticeably lower than the diesel models. But almost every
consumer who reviewed their diesel loved it.

I'm sure YMMV.

I'm Guessing "DEF" means "Diesel Exhaust Fluid" - or Blutech.
Runflat I suppose refers to no spare tire as the installed tires
are run-flat models.

But I'm just guessing...
