[newbie] New to list
Hi All, I am new to the list. Just installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 over my Windows 2000 Professional. Everything seems to be working well, however I see some differences I am curious about. Last year I fooled around with Linux for a few weeks and I remember that one of the CD's had several RPM packages of themes which you could install very simply. I can find those no where, except on the web as tar or gz files. Installing them as RPMS was easy as it placed them where they belonged. As a zipped package, where do I place the files to enable the theme and where can I get the theme manager? I downloaded the two ISO images from the Linux Mandrake site and create CD's, so maybe I am missing something? Thanks for any help, and one more thing. What is the most popular email program? I am now using KMail, but would like to use something that allows you to compose HTML messages, and I do not want to use Netscape. Thanks, Fred Hamilton

On Wednesday 08 November 2000 21:12, you wrote: I nearly wrote exactly what he did but decided it wasn't worth the time I think your statement says it all! If it isn't worth the time then why bother posting? The very name of this reflector says it all. When someone comes in and asks a question, by all means everyone that has something pertinent to say concerning the question should start typing. If you have nothing to say about the persons question, then ignore the message and read on to try to help someone else, don't waste the time of the reader or the subscribers by adding more useless traffic. THEN he insinuates that I have been "flooding" the reflector with HTML messages because of my question, when I only subscribed today. I can do without that kind of help. Just my 2 cents worth, and no growling was intended
[newbie] NT and Linux
How can I have Linux and NT 4.0 Server on the same machine and have Linux show up on the NT start menu instead of using the Linux boot manager? Can it be done? I am getting ready to do a clean install of both operating systems. Fred
[newbie] Installing themes
I am still looking for answers in installing programs. When I install an RMPS package the application does not appear on my KDE menu. Do I have to manually install it and if so, how? Where does the program get installed? I saw nothing that led me to believe I could control where it gets installed. Also I am still receiving the error "Can only start executables on local disks." I am confused by this message as well. When installing an application in TAR or GZ format, what file do I typically look for to install it? (ie, install.exe or setup.exe in Windows, What's the equivalent in Linux?) And lastly, I have several KDE themes I want to install in GZ format. Where do I copy them in order for them to appear in my Themes choices? Sorry if all this sounds to simple to ask about... I am a Systems Analyst in the MS Windows world, but am brand new to Linux, but I like Linux better so far. Once I get past the learning curve I may use it exclusively... Fred PS: What is one of the better email clients? I use Eudora Pro in Windows and would like something similar for Linux. Where are some of the better sites for obtaining Linux software on the web, and for learning about Linux?
[newbie] Make errors
Well, with the help of everyone that responded to my cry for help, I am now able to use tar. Now... HELP again. I am receiving these errors when using make. make[4] *** [install-data-local] Error 255 make[3] *** [install-am] Error 2 make[2] *** [install-recursive] Error 1 make[1] *** [install-recursive] Error 1 make: [install-recursive] Error 1 What do these compile errors mean and what do I do to fix them? I tried this using two different archived files and I received the same error both times, so I am assuming it is not a programming error, but I am missing something in my Linux configuration? I reinstalled the make rpm package and tried again but no luck. Any help would be appreciated Thanks to all who have helped so far.. Fred
[newbie] Tar and .Gz
I am a REAL newbie. I just installed Mandrake 7.1 last night. I have a couple of questions. First, my system has 164Mb of RAM but Mandrake only reports 64. During the install I tried to over-ride this and entered the correct amount of RAM, but it still only reports 64Mb. How can I fix this, or do I need to worry about it? Next, how do I install software from TAR or GZ format? I know how to install packages, but I downloaded a file in GZ format and opened it with the software that came with Mandrake, but I could not figure out what to do next? I mean in Windows there is always a setup.exe, but what about Linux? I know I can extract these files, but I did not know what to do after that. I saw no executables or installation routines. (See I am a newbie!) Example, I have this file: so51a_lnx_01.tar so how do I install it? Once I install it, does it automatically appear on the menu for execution? Thanks Fred
