Lua is linked statically into LuaTeX and when the executable is stripped
and lua_gettop has not been referenced anywhere, it will be removed.

It is my believe that Unicode has the wrong properties for Arabic standalone Hamza; in short you should just type a regular Hamza in the middle of the word and it will get positioned correctly. Placing a combining Hamza over a Tatweel to “fake” it is wrong IMO. So in Amiri you just type “بِءَايَٰتِ” and voilà, every thing is rendered correctly (the same is true for the small Alef). Yes, that works. But the direct way works with Uhtmanic1HafsVer9: \definefont[arabicamiri][file:amiri-regular.ttf*arabic at 15pt] \definefont[arabicuth][file:UthmanicHafs1Ver09.ttf*arabic at 17pt] \starttext \setupalign[r2l] \arabicamiri بِـَٔايَـٰتِ \blank \arabicuth بِـَٔايَـٰتِ \stoptext To be honest, in Corel Draw UthmanicHafs is the perfect font for my purpose - at least in CorelDraw - e.g.: The ayat-numbers are printed as a unicode-symbol, not as numbers (perfect, because ConTeXt has problems with the direction with arabic numbers, they are mirrored in ConTeXt). But it is only perfect in CorelDraw, in ConTeXt some things are not recognized correctly, as I mentioned. E.g. this one: \definefont[arabicamiri][file:amiri-regular.ttf*arabic at 15pt] \definefont[arabicuth][file:UthmanicHafs1Ver09.ttf*arabic at 17pt] \starttext \setupalign[r2l] \arabicuth لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ﴿٢﴾ \stoptext If I put the same arabic into CorelDraw, it prints a nice Unicode-Symbol for the number - see the JPG I have attached here, screenshot from CorelDraw, but ConTeXt ignores the brackets and prints just a verys small number. When you use “location=text” context checks the value of the style key, when
the value of the key is “normal”
the left and right arguments are used but when you use a different value (e.g.
slanted) context applies only
the style and color values.
Another way to create quotation command is to use the annotation module:

underlying (xdvipdfmx) driver.

1. "local table.setmetatableindex(t,f)" in luatex-basics-gen.lua (or
luatex-fonts-merged.lua) should be "function
table.setmetatableindex(t,f)" otherwise it causes unexpected symbol
error.
2. unicodes table in font-agl.lua is empty now. it causes
unicodevector table is nil in font-map.lua (or
luatex-fonts-merged.lua).

Hi all, you might be interested in hearing that there is a new there is a new version of the STIX fonts (since 1h ago) - or rather a beta version: 1.1.0-beta1. See: http://sourceforge.net/projects/stixfonts/files/STIXv1.1.0-beta1.zip/download "The beta period will remain open until December 1, 2011." - Thus, one has still 5 months time to comment on the bugs. (Or are that two moths? With STIX ETA one never knows ...) As reminder: STIX fonts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STIX_Fonts_project) are a large collection of Times-like math fonts, created by several publishing houses in a rather slow process. A year ago, 1.0 was relased and now with 1.1b1 is finally released. Seemingly, one can now use it directly such that one does not need the XITS fonts anymore. (Cf. http://typophile.com/node/71171) From the release notes: "What is new in this release? The original Version 1.0 STIX was packaged as 29 distinct font files. Version 1.1.0-‐beta1 provides the same set of glyphs packaged as a set of 4 text fonts and 1 symbol font. This new packaging will facilitate the use of the font on more desktop applications, and will specifically allow the symbol font to be used in recent versions of the Microsoft Word Equation Editor." I can change the mark of the second footnote from "2" to asterix by
defining a conversion like so:

achieve the same result as the working example above with something like
the (pseudo) example below?

[NTG-context] Animations
Hi Hans, this is a feature request regarding fieldstack based animations. Since i want to use fieldstacks in one of my modules i’m looking for a simple to use interface to produce animations, for the moment i create a symbol for each frame and put them together with a fieldstack. For latex there is a package called animate [1] which provides a environment to produce animations with buttons for navigation (just a take a look at the examples in the manual, code is not relevant for us). I wrote now a short dummy module [1] to demonstrate how this could look in context, the first file [1] contains a few example, the environment is inspired by \startoverlay/\stopoverlay but it needs a alternative method to allow loops (look at the third example in this file). The second test file shows which navigation buttons i want for such a module, the are “first frame”, “previous frame”, “play” and “stop” animation, “next frame” and “last frame”. As a alternative one can produce a animation with a overlay button only with a symbol on the first frame to indicate a interactive element. ConTeXt checks if the argument of \setupitemgroup has an assignment
(key=value), then it calls a version of \setparameters; otherwise it calls
a version of \processcommalist. So, if you use assignments and options in
the same command, the options get ignored.
All ConTeXt commands behave like this.

[article]
[command=\blank]

Why do you expect \setuphead to change the way itemgroups behave?
Because I can't make any sense of the thousands of pages of ConTeXt
documentation scattered everywhere with little apparent rhyme or reason
to its usage and with everything other than whatever it is that I seem
to need present in them.
If you define a command using \define<...>, then you configure it using
\setup<>. Other than a few exceptions, that's how it is.
Use
\setupitemgroup
[article]
[color=...]
I tried that and it did nothing.

Alan,
I know next to nothing about math, but I know that the Greek
typescripts do not define a math font. So you will get errors doing
math when the body font is Greek. I wish I could help, but defining a
math font is beyond my abilities. If anyone is interested in doing
it, however, I will be happy to provide the specs for the Greek fonts.

Ideally, one would like to be able to do math when the body font is

[NTG-context] Some things I don't understand about typescripts...
Christmas is approaching, and I hate to be a pest this time of the
year, but there's this problem that really bothers me: I'm still
working hard to release version 2 of my Greek module on the
unsuspecting masses. It will define all fonts in a typescript instead
of as single fonts to allow switches like {\em } etc. It appears that
the typescript mechanism creates some problems. The most serious one
for me is that it seems to demand a full list of sizes that can be
used in this form:

[30pt,25pt,20pt,18pt,17.3pt,14.4pt,14pt,12pt,11pt,11.5pt,10pt,9pt,8pt,
7pt,6pt,5pt,4pt]

If I specify a bodyfont with a size that's not in this list
\setupbodyfont[somebodyfont,19.7pt]
I get no errors, but no output either :-( If I add 19.7pt to the
list, everything works again. Is there an explanation for this behavior?
It also looks like I should define a math font for these Greek fonts.
It looks like ConTeXt will try to get certain symbols from math if
they're not defined in the bodyfont. Is there a syntax for creating a
default math font for an entire set of typescripts? I tried this

but it doesn't seem to work, if a symbol like \textdoublebracketleft
is used, compilation will fail with this error:

Great, it works! Running "texexec --pdf test-prodint" worked immediately, but "xdvi test-prodint.dvi" gave me an error relating to mktexpk not being able to create a bitmap font. Solved this problem by running "updmap --enable Map prodint.map". I don't think I could have done this myself, as I do not understand some of the steps in your solution. Thank you very much! The missing linebreak is probably realted to the problem as in the
other thread, so you just have to wait a little bit longer, until that
is fixed for this problem to magically go away as well.
The disappearing footnote may be unfixable within \startquotation. It
would be easier to define your own start-stop pair for this, because
\startquotation ... \stopquotation doesn't actually support tacking on
stuff at the end. Try this instead:

Works like a charm! Thanks very much for the workaround ... I've
adapted it slightly so that the optional argument is treated as
generic text ... in order to use \cite[], \footnote{\cite[]} or
whatever else I need.
Could this optional argument perhaps be integrated directly in the
usual \startquotation command some day? I guess a lot of people will
need this ... every quotation calls for a proper reference ;-)

and/or \nospace to get the layout exactly as desired.

thanks for the information. Here is where I am:
I am using and talking about 3D objects all the time as part of my
professional life,
and it would be nice to be able to include them as part of PDF files
both for
presentations and class notes (which I do both in CoNTeXt). As with
Acrobat 7, "one" can embed
such 3D graphics in a PDF, Acrobat then shows (very much like with a
movie) a surrounding
box within which one can rotate, move scale the 3D image. I f
available, I would replace most of my
3D graphics with 3D objects ("surface"). This is of course a rather
specialized desire, I suppose.
I can say that it does work, even on a Mac, I tried a LaTeX example.
I don't know whether it works via a plug-in
or is coded directly in Acrobat, I only know it works with Acrobat 7
without installing anything else.
There is one problem though: None of my software or own code
currently exports into the required format U3D.
If support was already available within ConTeXt, I would be motivated
to write some code so that I can export my
3D files to U3D. That not being the case, I think we let it rest here
until we both have nothing better to do (...).

I found an issues with resume module in latest beta (MkIV)
Fixed.
BTW: In the old version beta some symbol is invalid such as
"\setresumevalue{mobile}"

Both "\groupedcommand" and "\symbol" intersect stuff that breaks

I'm using the following encoding commands

and was wondering whether someone knows an elegant way to get the pound
sign 'lb bar' (unicode #2114, html ℔).
My current hack looks like this:

well after incrementally deleting most everything from my document I now
seem to have a reproducible example:

the apparent "culprit" is the presence of the `\definesynonyms' stuff.
without it the rest (identical to your minimal example) compiles. with it
it does not... remember that I am really unexperienced with `context': at
the time (2 years ago), when I first tried this, it worked. I now realize
(after reading up on the `definesynonyms' syntax again ...) that
in the definition a _command_ has to go into the third bracket. seemingly
at the time I was just putting a placeholder `\meaning' there (never
attempting to use it as a command acting on the explanatory text for that
symbol definition but only wanting a glossary.
the strange thing (for me) is that this worked just fine two years ago,
now it does produce a very strange error as described. question is why.
but replacing `\meaning' by `\infull' suffices to restore sane behaviour.
while I understand, that I did something stupid (putting a non-existent
command `\meaning' in the definition), I would have presumed that this
might trigger an error at that place rather than making `\left (' suddenly
an undefined control sequence. any explanation what is going on here would
be greatly appreciated.

That's yet another reason to avoiding fixing the values of the 'm' and
'n' sizes. As of now, you have to first decide your font size, lookup
the 'x' and 'xx' sizes in font-pre.mkiv and do a little math... every
time you switch fonts. Instead I've come up with a function that
doesn't depend on hardcoded globals:

“f.” stems from Latin “folio”, and “ff.” is a duplicated abbreviation, as was

However, how can I set the author/subject? (Shown in tool tip of the annotation symbol; it is shown above the description; actually subject is enough for me.) Additionally, I miss the file size and possibly the modification date for the attachments; they are often handy to have. Is is possible to associate an embedded file stream with the document itself without creating an annotation symbol as with \attachment in ConTeXt? [NTG-context] Emoji color fonts not working on LMTX/Context MKIV
I've tried the following from the manuals and adapted some code to see if
it works:

I have a few questions about this.
In GetNiveauOfService 9 is used three times. I like DRY, so I was
wondering if there would be a better way to do this?
Next step would be that the number of checkboxes could be a parameter.
The default would be nine and if given, the given value would be used.
How would I do this?
Then the 'normal' checkboxes. The default is one column. But I would
like to have the possibility to use a parameter to for example make
checkboxes in three columns. How would I do this?
Lastly, in GetNiveauOfService there is text. How can I make this
language dependent. For example in English I want:
(1 = low, 9 = high)
but in Dutch:
(1 = weinig, 9 = veel)
and properly it would be a good idea to have two optional parameters
when you want other descriptions.
How would I do this?

[NTG-context] blackboard bold and calligraphic
BLACKBOARD
There is a problem with the Blackboard symbols, when used in regular
and bold forms both.
In the Lucida fontset there is a regular series in lbma (or hlcra),
and a bold series in font lbmad (or hlcda).
As I understand from the current code, switching from regular to bold
should be accompanied by a switch from Blackboard to something like
BlackboardBold in the command \bbd (from the sources I guess \bbd in
font-ini.tex is the most basic macro here).
The problem is that \bbd is defined as:

{Blackboard}}}
Thus the font is hardcoded to regular Blackboard.
I have no idea what should be the best strategy to repair this.
As for now, the most general mechanism for switching to other/bold
math fontfamilies I could find is using \bfmath (and friends).
The font needed is in one of the math font registers, of course, so
something like {\ma CNRZ} instead of {\bbd CNRZ} will do. But this
low level code makes the TeX text source explicitely dependent on the
font; for example in the AMS-series these characters are found in
msmb, usually ending up in \ma.
Is there some generic solution here?
CALLIGRAPHIC
There is a similar problem with $\cal ...$
It is defined as
\def\cal {\mathortext{\fam\purefamily{calligraphic}}{\symbolicfont
{Calligraphic}}}
I definded font "Calligraphic" but here ConTeXt does not seem to use
it in math mode. The calligraphic symbols appear to be taken from the
sy (symbol) math family instead of the Calligraphic font. It is a
problem, because in the font I am using the calligraphic letters are
in another font. Typesetting
${\cal XYZ}\hbox{\cal XYZ}$
gives the wrong characters from the symbol font in the first case,
the correct letters in the second.
How can this be solved?

[NTG-context] How to switch between fonts?
Dear font experts! For some weeks I try very hard to generate minimal PDF documents using the PDF base 14 fonts. Now the following problem popped up: The Helvitica, Times, and Courier fonts have "8a" as their default encoding. Unfortunately, the 8a encoding is somewhat incomplete because it misses some characters (eg. the degree character). In TeX I use texnansi encoding because it offers most of the special characters that I need. If I use 8a encoding for the PDF document (in order to avoid reencoding) then the degree symbol is typeset by an embedded "txsy" font. The bad thing about this solution is that this degree character does not take care of \bf, \it, or \bi. Therefore the result is unsatisfactory. If I use texnansi encoding for the PDF document then the degree symbol is typeset nicely. The disadvantage of this option is that now the built-in fonts are always reencoding which make some additional 2kb for the PDF document. I would like to have the reeconded font to be used only if it is really necessary. Now I see two problems: 1. A particual problem in this situation Is it possible to define font synonymes locally (i.e. inside a group)? In that case I could map the virtual fonts that are base on 8a encoded raw fonts into virtual fonts that are based on texnansi reencoded raw fonts. I tried that but it seems that font synonymes are accepted only at the beginning. 2. A general problem Provided that I write a set of typescripts for defining a typeface similar to the postscript typefaces of ConTeXt but based on other (virtual) fonts: is it possible to switch between these two typefaces. The switch must respect the current font characteristics (i.e. \ss, \rm, \tt, \bf, \it, \bi, and size). But some fonts meant for printing have symbols for Unicode control chars -- that poses a challenge. Most minimally decent Arabic fonts have symbols for the Unicode control chars as default, including Scheherazade, Amiri, Uthmanic, and Noto Naskh Arabic -- all free fonts. Industry workhorses like Linotype Lotus (Arabic) also have them. Uniscribe applications like Notepad/Word allow for toggling in a WYSIWYG context -- can't speak for HarfBuzz -- so there is no harm in having explicit symbols in the font. The upshot is that, for non-Latin scripts, some toggling capability in ConTeXt is important to have -- even inescapable for Arabic-script piblishing. Wow. I learnt about Maxwell's Equation 48 years ago. I never understood it then
nor on the intervening time despite sometimes helping design antennas. The

On my machine the rsfs font is shown under mkiv, but there a few issues with
spacing of some characters as you may see in the resulting PDF. Hans gave a
mission to Aditya, Mojca (and very remotely to me, given my more than limited
skills…) to track down some of th eissues with math in mkiv. Aditya is right
now travelling, so without an easy access the internet, beside being busy with
his thesis. I am sure he will return soon and we will have some insights frm
him and Hans.
