Thought you all might like to know what is
happening with my twins mum. Thankyou so much for your input. When the
couple came again last night my mum was so much more relaxed. Your emails
helped her immensley and she was back to the nice relaxed mum again. Even
very confident as well.

Her husband has been attending the last
coupleOb visits with her and the Ob hasn't been as intimidating when
he was there. Apparently last visit on Monday he got out of his chair and
went to the door 3 times to usher them out, probably thought he had finished
so they had to be too. Her husband piped up and said we haven't finished
asking you questions yet. He sat back down in his chair. Yea good on ya
Dad!

He is still telling her that he wants her to
have an epidural early so that he can manually turn the second twin if need
be thus avoiding a cs. Keeps saying that he has only ever needed to do a cs
once and has been able to successfully turn the other baby to be born
naturally. (his idea of naturally is quite a bit different to mine -
apparently his naturally means vaginally). With her hubbyand myself at
thebirth she has 2 labour ward guardians in case he tries to pull any
swiftys (I will be very aware of the medical needs though if they should
arise). Did I read somewhere on this site that you can support the uterus
after the first twin is born so that the second is in a better position and
less likely to go transverse or breech?

This has been very much a learning experience
for me and thanks to you guys I have a much better understanding of twin
births now. The Ob was saying that there are only 6 Ob's in Melbourne that
will "allow" a natural birth. How sad! I certainly understand why mums are
so pleased to have home births.

Why do we have to fight s hard to have what
is rightfully ours. A beautitful birth like nature intended. I am not being
naive when I say that as I know that sometimes circumstances arise but
gees..do those circumstances have to be so programmed in. Being an
NLP practitionerI know only too well how we are programmed for things
to happen and they are not always a positive programming.

Diane

 Caesarean, Caesarean, Caesarean, Natural Birth
 By Clare Colman

I was 24, healthy, a newly admitted lawyer. I booked in to see a private
obstetrician in a large maternity hospital. I read pregnancy books. I
attended the hospital classes. I had complete faith in the system and
knew
nothing of the politics of birth.

The pregnancy went smoothly, until 38 weeks when my obstetrician sent me
for
a pelvimetry. I'm now sure it had more to do with my size (a petite
150cm)
and my occupation than any health risk. The results had shown my pelvis
to
be inadequate and an elective caesar scheduled. I was devastated, but
the
compromise was that I could undergo a trial of labour, so long as I came
to
hospital at the first sign of labour. I was told, since the baby hadn't
engaged, I could have a cord prolapse and then we have 8 minutes to get
the
baby out before it dies. So at 2am on his due date, I had the show and
rang the hospital! I was there by 4am. Labour hadn't even started but no
one suggested I go home. No sustenance, no sleep, on my feet till 6pm.
By
then I was exhausted, starving, discouraged, only 2cm. I didn't even see
my
doctor, who was not available that weekend. I agreed to an epidural and
the
inevitable caesar. Andrew was born at 2.20am on 10.1.94, weighing
3.195kg.

The operation itself was not physically painful, but I felt totally
detached
from what was going on, as if I was an observer. I think this was a
coping
mechanism at the time - I was hooked up to so much equipment - electrodes
on
my chest, automatic blood pressure cuff on my arm (which cut off the
circulation every minute or so), electrodes on my thumb, cannula and drip
in
my arm, oxygen mask on my face (nifty shower cap too), catheter in my
spine,
catheter for my bladder, naked and numb from the chest down, belly swabbed
in brown antiseptic, and a screen between me and the surgery. My
husband
was sitting beside me, and there was a team of 7 or 8 staff members.

In recovery my body shook violently for about 15 minutes, which I was told
was a normal reaction to an epidural. I slept for a couple of hours and
woke to the most pain I had ever felt. I had never had any serious injury
or illness in my life before - it was like having been hit by a truck. I
spent that day in bed. I couldn't even roll over from one side to the
other
without 2 nurses assisting. Pethidine shots in the thigh every four hours
made me feel dopey and sleepy, and helped detach from the pain, but also
made connection with my new baby extremely difficult. I didn't even think
he was really mine. I just wanted to be left alone to sleep and make the
pain go away. The next day I had to get out of bed, and walk to the other
end of the ward for a shower. I thought I was going to pass out with
pain,
and kept apologising to the nurse for being so slow!

Physically each day got a little easier as I became more mobile and the
intensity of the pain eased, but the thought of having to take a baby home
and care for it made me feel sheer panic. I felt like I had failed the
first test of motherhood in having not been able to give birth,
breastfeeding was not going well, I felt no connection with my baby and I
had lost faith in my body.

Many of the feelings that flowed from my caesarean were gradual rather
than
immediate, but they included a profound sense of loss, inadequacy, failure
and sadness, guilt that I was not more grateful for the health of my
child,
and eventually anger at the circumstances which led to the caesar and the
way I was treated afterwards. (I was sent home with an infected wound,
cracked nipples, a thrush infection and no follow-up care. It was 9 weeks
before I was able to see my doctor for a post-natal checkup, because she
was
 fully booked!)

The second caesarean 2 years later added a sense of powerlessness in the
face of medical technology and the doctor/patient relationship. I allowed
decisions to be made for me and my baby and things to be done which went
against my instinct and feelings. I had changed doctors (another female
obstetrician) and hospitals and made clear from the start my desire for a
natural delivery. But a long cycle meant my official due date was 3
weeks
out, it was Christmastime, and private hospitals pay triple time to
theatre
staff. Surgery was scheduled, rather than wait another six days till
after
the holidays, strictly for the sake of the baby of course. Stephanie
 arrived on 21.12.95, weighing 3.259kg.

Having a general anaesthetic after a failed epidural (and an encounter

Hi,
I'm Terry Stockdale an Independent Midwife in
Hobart, I find a combination of Arnica Homeopathically and verbernum tincture
herbal (taken separately)seem to take the edge at bay, otherwise voltaren tabs
50mgs 8 hourly seem to hit the spot. It is most important to keep the
bladder empty especially just before breastfeeding as this causes surges of
afterbirth contractions and will be stronger with a full bladder.
Hot packs
and you can hire a TENS machine that is often used
for period pains. one of my women felt this was heaven.

  Dear All,

I am hoping you may be able to help. I am
expecting my fourth baby in approx. 2 weeks need some advise. I
usually experience killer afterbirth pains that often seem worse than the
labour. For this birth I am attending the Birth Centre here in Brisbane
am planning to birth in the water birth my placenta
physiologically. I have not had a physiological third stage in the past
(nor a water birth) I was hoping that this will make a difference to the
afterbirth pains. The acupuncturist I have been visiting has also
suggested Chinese herbs (usually used in labour) to assist with this pain
also... have any of you used Chinese herbs for something like this if
so, are they safe for breastfeeding?

Also, my husband I are planning on having
our 3 other children at our birth I was thinking that if all goes to
plan that they may like to touch the baby as he/she crowns is
born. Do any of you experienced with siblings being present find that
siblings want to be this involved? I want my children to find this
experience as wonderful totally natural as I do. I cannot put into
words the way I feel about birth (as a woman, mother midwife)... but
would somehow like to share these overwhelming feelings with my
children. Do many of the children want to get into the birth pool / tub
during the labour /or birth? I know all children are individual (my
three certainly are)... but would not like to limit them the way they
would like to participate just because I have no idea about the normal
reactions of children I have never met anybody who has had their other
children present at their births I have never cared for any woman in
that situation(in fact almost everyone I tell of our plans look at
me as though I've stepped from another planet).

Any suggestions welcome (I hope my questions
make sense brains getting a bit foggy in the lead up to
  birth).

A woman is 6 days post-dates with her 3rd baby. All is well, 2 previous

the woman doesn't want to do it unassisted. Thinks it will happen soon!

I was wondering if anyone out there might have some home birth mothers who
are willing to participate in my research. I am currently interviewing
women who give birth through the private system, the public/tertiary led
system and the public/midwifery led system. I feel that the women who

I do realize that not everyone enjoys this form of interaction. I would

   For
years and years they told me,
   Be
  careful of your breasts.
   Don't
  ever squeeze or bruise them.
   And
  give them monthly tests.
   So I
  heeded all their warnings,
   And
  protected them by law.

  Guarded them very carefully,
   And
  always wore my bra.
   After
  30 years of astute care,
   My
  gyno, Dr. Pruitt,
   Said
  I should get a Mammogram.
   "O.
  K," I said, "let's do it."

"Stand up here real close" she said,
   (She
  got my boob in line),
   "And
tell me when it hurts," she said,
   "Ah
  yes! Right there, that's fine."
   She
  stepped upon a pedal,
   I
  could not believe my eyes!
   A
  plastic plate came slamming down,
   My
  hooter's in a vise!
   My

   My

  Excruciating pain I felt,

  Within it's viselike grip.
   A

   "Take
a deep breath" she said to me,
   Who
  does she think she's kidding?!?
   And
  woozy I am getting.

"There, that's good," I heard her say,
   (The
  room was slowly swaying.)
   "Now,
let's have a go at the other one."
   Have
  mercy, I was praying.
   It
squeezed me from both up and down,
   It
  squeezed me from both sides.
   I'll
bet SHE'S never had this done,
   To
  HER tender little hide.
   Next
time that they make me do this,
   I
  will request a blindfold.
   I
have no wish to see again,

   MAMMOGRAM
  PREP COURSE
   Never
forget the importance of regular mammograms! Many women
   are
afraid of their first mammogram, but there is no need to
   worry. By
taking a few minutes each day for a week preceding
   the exam
and doing the following practice exercises, you will
   be
totally prepared for the test, and best of all, you can do
   these
simple practice exercises right in your own home.

   EXERCISE
  1
   Open your
refrigerator door and insert one breast between the
   door and
the main box. Have one of your strongest friends slam
   the door
shut as hard as possible and lean on the door for good
   measure.
Hold that position for five seconds. Repeat again, in
   case the
  first time wasn't effective enough.

   EXERCISE
  2
   Visit
your garage at 3 AM when the temperature of the cement
   floor is
just perfect. Take off all your clothes and lie

comfortably on the floor with one breast wedged under the rear

   tire of
the car. Ask a friend to slowly back the car up until
   your
breast is sufficiently flattened and chilled. Turn over
   and
  repeat for the other breast.

   EXERCISE
  3
   Freeze
two metal bookends overnight. Strip to the waist. Invite
   a
stranger into the room. Press the bookends against one of
   your
breasts. Smash the bookends together as hard as you can.
   Set an
appointment with the stranger to meet next year and do
   it again.

   You are
  now properly prepared.

[ozmidwifery] Refusing the breast

2002-09-20 Thread Child Birth Information Service

May be mother is using a different brand of soap or
shampoo this maybe tainting the taste or smellof the breast.
Please do not use soap on the breast and not use
any deodorant if possible, baby likes the smell of mother.
Garlic is good, maybe see if you have been eating
different food, or too much of one sort.

  Dear
  All

  Nic
Edmondstone and I have developed a poster which supports the right of every
woman to choose a midwife as her lead maternity carer...If you wish to see it,
email me direct and I'll send it as an attachment. They are selling at cost
price (printing and posting that is) to promote midwifery care, particularly
important now in the lead up to NMAP.
Maternity Coalition will be distributing some in each
state...there are plenty more available by emailing me.

  Yours for Better Birth,
  Vicki

  Subject: [ozmidwifery] Premature

  Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had experience or
  knowledge of premature babies.
  With regards to 'head hitting'.
Some people we know have a son who is now 18
  months (11 weeks premy).
He isn't yet walking or talking but does stand and
  crawls very fast.
My question is that he has a habit of hitting his
forehead against things on purpose! At times he will knock his head against
  anything available and quite hard.
He does have bruises from some of this activity
which is of great concern to me.
I have question his parents about this and was
  told he has "compression"...
further to this is that his skull isn't growing
quick enough for his brain and this "hitting" is a reaction to the
compression. This is as much as I have been told.

Has anyone got more information on this or any
  experience on this matter?

  I would appreciate any help..

  Darren.

Hi Kathleen,
Sorry for my mix-up, and good luck on the day, I hope you
get lots of people with many ideas.
I presented one of our members with an idea, and she has
taken it on board to write up a proposal for us.
Community midwifery care where by a group of midwives will
take on a case load of women and birth them in the setting of their choice or
appropriate to them. Home or hospital. This should be paid for by the health
system, we are still working on the proposals to take to the numerous committees
to be considered, may be your group can help us, as we may be able to help you.

The name of the person writing up our proposal is

Six or seven year ago I read some research I
believe from the lancet but I'm not certain, outcome was, to increase calcium
and Vit C was thought to be of benefit.
Maybe a visit to a homeopath might be valuable,
trace minerals maybe helpful.(My personal
suggestions.these things seem to work, I also encourage visualizations and a
chat to baby.)
