You make a photocopy of your photo ID and the credit card statement with PayPal transaction. Then you send them to PayPal, and they can confirm your credit card in about 10 business days. Asahiflex part question
Well, I just broke the tiny window of glass of the front of the attached finder for my Asahiflex. :( This is the part that's on the upper right of the camera when viewed from the front. It's in three pieces, which I have. Is there a glue around which will cement these pieces with minimal fogging of the glass? I don't care if it fogs it a bit, as long as it can hold these small pieces of glass relatively firmly. Or does anyone have this piece lying around as a spare? RE: Carl Zeiss Jena lenses: Are they "real" K mounts?
Hi Zeiss Jena Lenses a generally very good. I use the MF lenses for my Pentacon Six. The 35mm lenses will not function like K-mounts on Pentax cameras (the ones made for Praktica). You must use them with manual aperture (just like the SMC 3.5/28mm shift lens) - no automatic stopping down when fired. Since there is no aperture-simulator-pin, the Pentax camera will only measure correctly, when stopped down to working aperture. I've tried the Flektogon 2.8/20mm. It's excellent! In my experience you could consider buying them, if you get a good bargain (maybe half of a used Pentax K-mount lens) and if you plan to use them for planned shooting - no repertage, when fast focusing is needed. (Since the DOF is very large for wideangles, focusing is not all that critical for the 20mm). At ebay the 20mm often gets too expensive and reaches the same prices as a Pentax (350-500$ - in mint condition they are collectibels). Optically I think the 20mm Zeiss lens is similar to Pentax - some say it's better, some say the f4.0 version is even sharper. I would have bought a Zeiss Jena 20mm, had I not found a "bargain" Pentax A for 295$ (I just love it, I regret not getting one 15 years ago!). An EX A2.8/20mm costs 504$ at KEH right now. RE: MZ-S First look
Hi Someone wrote: Don't get me >wrong, I like most of what I've heard about the >camera. Just don't want to part with that much >money. That's not fair: The MZ-S is clearly an F100 competitor. A used LN F100 cost 999$. There are only few pro's et con's. If you own some Pentax/K-mount lenses, the MZ-S pricing makes sence. It would be more expensive to switch to Nikon. It will be a nice "back-up camera" for pro's who are using the digital version, Pentax 67 or 645. But it will not make anyone switch from Nikon or Canon. The digital version might! BTW, I think it's very understandable that Pentax makes this camera, not an entry into the 35mm pro market. Not an F5 or an EOS1 competitor. The MZ series is probably the largest SLR success Pentax has had since the break through of autofocus. Any sane businessman would try to follow up on this, try topping it off with a more rugged, better featured, better designed camera - still using the MZ concept. The entry into the "35mm" pro market is the digital twin. If this turns out successfully, we might see other high end 35mm cameras - film and digital - from Pentax. Untill we know, we'll try to shoot great photographs with the MZ-S as well as all the other thousinds Pentax cameras that's still working after 10, 20, 30, 40 years! Why don't we just buy it, guys - it may very well be our last (new) 35mm film camera. Heck, this one will outlast 35mm film, anyway. Jens - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: eBay payment methods / Zenitar fisheye
Hi, I did this and it worked fine, they debited the $1 off my visa, but then credited it to my paypal account, so i used the $1 on my first transaction. If they $1 shows up on your visa then code should its just a part of the paypal name on the visa card statement. I also had a problem with my visa not working for a while and i called them on the telephone and i found the staff to be very very helpful. Theres a catch. I signed up in january. It cost $1. You're supposed to get a random four digit code with the charge on your credit card. They never did. I called my bank; no code. No code on the invoince from the bank. I've send them several e-mails but they never reply. So it seems like a scam. You get thousands of peoples credit card number and charge all of them $1. Very few are going to complain about this kind of money but in total it sums up thousands of dollars. I'm still worried that they have my credid card number. I'm considering contacting Visa. Hi Paul, Rectilinear lenses should all provide the same projection on the film plane, it they did not then straight objects placed at the edge of the frame would be rendered curved. Therefore all well corrected rectilinear lenses should provide the same degree of subject elongation. The fact that the better SLR wide angle lenses (particularly pre-aspheric) tend to be long is due to their retrofocus design which is by all means a compromise designed to make available space in front of the film plane for the SLR mirror to swing. Don't kid yourself about SLR wide angle lenses, for real no compromise designs check out the Leica-M, Contax-G and Mamiya RF designs, most are virtually symmetrical designs and have a magnitude lower distortion than the best retrofocus wides, many are designed such that their rear elements are merely mm from the film plane. :-) Cheers, Rob Studdert (eBay ID: distudio) PO Box 701 HURSTVILLE BC NSW 1481 AUSTRALIA Tel +61-2-9554-4110 Fax +61-2-9554-9259 UTC(GMT) +10 Hours [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please check my current eBay auctions: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~distudio/ebay/ - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. OT - If you know your Tokina hoods, please read!
Hi listers, On the subject of lens hoods, does anyone know if Tokina ever made a plastic (or metal, for that matter) 'grippy-type' push-on lens hood in 67mm diameter size? The part designation would (should) be something like: SH-671 or similar. For instance, I have the Tokina ATX 80-200 f2.8 (manual) and the hood for that is the SH-771, and it's a 77mm fit. If one was never made for that diameter, as I suspect is the case, can anyone recommend a push-on and clamp type hood suitable for a 67mm lens, specifically the Pentax A*85mm 1.4 ?? Motor Drive MX and NiCad Pack LX...final update
Further to my saga about re-celling a NiCad Pack LX so that I could use it with my newly aquired Motor Drive MX: the pack is now completed, and functioning great. Anyone in the UK wishing to undertake the exercise should read Rob Studdert's excellent reference at: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~distudio/lxnicdpack.html but if you can find the relevant replacement batteries in the UK, you've search longer and harder than the literally dozens of phone calls I made. Instead, order from the equally excellent Batteries America: http://www.mrnicd-ehyostco.com/newpage3.htm where 4 sticks of three cells each were made up and shipped out to me for a total of 62 dollars (about 43 UKP paid by credit card - I phoned the order through on first thing Friday morning Wisconson time - EST?). They were shipped out on Monday the 5th of March from Wisconson and arrived five days later on Saturday the 11th. The actual recelling job itself took a couple of hours, but I was being very thorough, and my soldering technique is more akin to arc welding; a more proficient person could halve the time, I am sure. As far as costs go, it's not cheap, but cheaper than buying a NiCad pack in good condition - if you can find one. They rarely come without an LX motor drive attached - nice if you've got the LX ;-) and are all likely to need recelling anyway. My pack came with a charger (Charge Pack M) and was bought as seen for 120 UKP. Add the recelling, and that's up to over 160 UKP. Hefty. Is it worth it to get from the 2 fps with the Winder MX to the 5 fps of the drive? IMHO, yes. Using old-fashioned (!) equipment is very much a cognitive decision, and so supporting that equipment with any and all ancillary add-ons is all part and parcel. If you run an old sports car, you tend to (want to) try and restore it to it's former glory, often at greater cost than perhaps buying a modern sports car. The point is, I decided I don't want a modern sports car - just yet! I screwed up
All those looking for a 50/1.4 smc/K have every right to be annoyed with me. But it was an accident. I'm talking about the current ebay auction for above nemed lens. It was "buy-it-now at $89. And while I've participated in numerous ebay auctions, I've never done a "buy-it-now." So I bid $89. That's not how it works. You're supposed to click on the "buy it now thingy." Flash Programs (was:MZ-S Press Release in Japan Part II)
Hi Take and all Thanks for responding. One of the things I miss with my PZ1-p is good flash programs. I don't like motiv programs for flashless photographing. But I would like some flash programs, selectable with a single botton, like: 1. Slow flash (FDA - Flash Determins Aperture): Speed according to background/aperture to flash output/distance to subject. (It's almost there in the with PZ1-p, but I hate that the camera chooses 1/30 sec. thus underexposing the background if the correct speed really is 1/8 sec. 2. Traditional program (to freeze movement). It could be optional Tv or Av priority, feeding the focus distance/max. flash output to the camera CPU when shooting in Av. 3. Fill in flash, for e.i. back lit scenes or direct sunlight with hard shadows. Doesn't anybody make this kind of stuff? Re: 28/2-class lens specs: Seven Third-Party Lenses vs. Three Pentax 28/2s(was: Re: fast kiron on ebay)
Hi, I am not Rob but I think he's right. I my (also limited) understanding the elongation of objects near the edge of the image produced by rectilinear super wide angle lenses is not related to optical aberrations of these lenses. It is inherent in how the image is projected on the film by these lenses. To avoid this you need a "cylindrical projection" (with the viewer in the center of the cylinder) as is provided e.g. by the Seitz roundshot camera. Also fish-eye lenses do not show such kind of elongations of close subjects near the edge. Alexander Mike Johnston wrote: Rob, A longer barrel--such as that used on the SMC 28/2, which was designed with Zeiss--can bend the rays more "gently." Isn't extra barrel distortion one of the compromises usually introduced by a shorter lens (unless, perhaps, an aspherical element is used)? Isn't that why "no compromise" lenses are typically longer, and use more elements? Or do I need to brush up on my limited understanding of Cartesian optics? Last I heard, Pentax was still supporting the LX and I expect them to support it for some time to come. I Understand Pentax US had all parts necessary last year and I expect they have this part today to restore any LX to an "as sold" late model state. That being said, I own 5 LX's and none have or ever had a "little plastic (?) cover off[on] the top of the rewind [knob/lever]. I would develop the negs normal or with just a minimal push. I certainly wouldn't push the film a full stop. I might add 10% development time or so, but that's about it. ( Whoever put the adapter on had no intention of ever removing it, they took the "locking" pin off of the adapter! ) The lens is surprisingly good for a mid 70's Third Party lens. RE: eBay payment methods / Zenitar fisheye
I've used BidPay http://www.bidpay.com/ a few times. I live in UK and most auctions are US or Canadian. The advantage is that you pay by credit card which is the easiest way of doing currency conversions. The seller gets notified direct from BidPay that a money order is on its way so they can ship the goods. It costs the buyer $5 flat for payments less that $100 or 2.25% +$5 for orders over $100. The seller pays nothing so has no reason to object to this method. I too have been watching those Zenitars - there seem to be lots of them for sale. OT: Modified Film Processing, advice please.
Yesterday I was the pit crew photographer for a friends SCCA race car effort (Alfa Romeo GTV-6 FWIW) at Texas World Speedway. The day started out bright and I loaded some Fuji Neopan SS ISO 100 into my (required Pentax content) PZ-20 and snapped on the Sigma 28-200 lens. By the time we arrived at the track it was starting to cloud over and I would have liked to change over to Ilford HP-5 at ISO 400 (midrole change would be nice). Anyway, I finished the day with 1 role of the Neopan and 3 roles of the HP-5 exposed at rated ISO. Now to the question. The overcast day brought on some pretty flat lighting, with some occasional sunny times. Today I want to develop these rolls and I am thinking I would like to perk up the negs a bit. My first thought is to just develop them at a higher ISO. I only have Ilford Ilfosol-S available today. The Ilford data sheets tell me that I can get ISO 800 on the HP-5 by increasing development time. I imagine the same is true of the Fuji but I don't have any tech details on the film yet, got it on sale and I usually don't use Fuji B/W. These are important pics for me and my friend and could result in a pic credit or two in the national Alfa magazine. Iwould also like to give my friend a nice enlargement for his allowing me into the pits with him. Advice on how to procede is welcome. Waiting and using another developer is an option. I think it is as much possible that this lens is a limited lens as it is that it is a FA* lens. For me the limited lenses are more or less new editions of the most outstanding M-series lenses. E.g. this way: M 2.8/40mm > FA 1.9/43mm limited M 2.0/85mm > FA 1.8/77mm limited M 2.0/28mm > FA 1.8/31mm limited There was a very compact M 4.0/20mm, so in case the 18mm is not f2.8 but slower, it could be a limited lens, but I rather see it as a FA* lens, especially since the 20mm is a standard FA-type. If you ask me, a limited superwideangle would rather be a moderate fast 21mm than a 18mm. Also, a mid tele was rumored as the next limited lens (whatever this is worth). Re: OT: first cold head results

To get a diffused system you need to have the diffused light source, or a diffusion-box, directly over the film-stage. Also, you don't mention what film you were printing. Traditional b&w films create the Callier effect when printed with condensed light (extremely so with point-source light) which causes tonal distortion in the mid-tones. This is because light is scattered by the silver grains and the paper receives less exposure than a particular density of silver theoretically should have transmitted. However the clear film doesn't cause any appreciable scatter so practically all of the light reaching the negative is passed to the paper from the clear shadows. The effect isn't as noticeable in the highlights because that area is usually printed to the same density as a matter of the individual operator's preference. Your mileage may vary :-) Chromogenic films (be they b&w or colour) have had the silver grains removed by bleaching when processed, the image is a dye-image only so there is no Callier effect. What this means is that chromogenic films will print with the same characteristics whether a condensor or a diffusion enlarger is used. Silver grained films, OTOH, will behave very differently according to the illumination type of the enlarger. Unless you use the same type of film you could be comparing apples with oranges! Re: fast 28mm shootoff--Vivitar Series 1 vs. Kiron (was My lens collection (was 24mm-K's))
Hi Paul, It is a circular hood, thread on. I use it with a regular filter without vignetting. I do have two 28 1.9`s, I guess I like them. The 35mm .9 you refer to, I think you mean the f1.9? I don`t have that one, and would`nt mind hearing some feedback about it, if anyone has it.
