PJ,
I like the first one much better than the second. For me it just has
more interest throughout the frame. I don't see the girl as the
subject so much in this one as the setting.
If the distant island wasn't there it would not work as well, but I
just sense something special about the place and the relationship
between all the elements seems to work together quite well.

I drilled a Manfrotto hex plate, threaded the hole, then put a short
M4 screw through it with some superglue to stop it from ever coming
back out. It fits both the F*300 and FA*400 lenses, but I had to do
a separate plate for the 6x7 as the hole spacings are different.

I didn't do it to stabilise the lens though: I did it because the
stupid Manfrotto plates I have are coated with cork (later versions
use rubber). It doesn't matter how much you tighten them, as
anything heavy will always come loose. The extra screw stops the
lens from twisting any more than a fraction of a degree.

Re: Adobe Lightroom for Windows (almost) available now

No - that didn't work at the time I tried it - that was a
broken link to a page on the Macromedia web site. It has
now been replaced by a working link to a page on the Adobe
site (and the link now says "Download Macintosh or Windows
Beta"). As I said, the email was alittle premature; they
hadn't quite finished updating the links on the web pages.

I just compared the Addonics FireWire reader vs the Sandisk ImageMate
12-in-1 using the Transcend 150x SD 2G capacity card. I loaded the
card with 1.9 G of RAW files and then initiated a full capacity
download from card to computer through each reader (Mac OS X v10.4.7
on a PowerMac G5 with a fast 500G drive).

Results:
The Addonics reader achieves [EMAIL PROTECTED] read speed average for
a total transfer time of 7.9 minutes.
The Sandisk reader achieves [EMAIL PROTECTED] read speed average for a
total transfer time of 3.8 minutes.

I haven't run the test with CF cards yet ... it could well be
different, just don't have the time to test it right now. But so far,
the Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 reader is the gold standard for
download speed. :-)

That's good for a reference measurement when shooting a resolution
chart, but resolution charts really don't tell you much about the
behavior of a lens when making photographs at more normally used
distances. Rendering qualities, sharpness and contrast at focus
distances used for practical picture taking are much more important.

usually have slots for two attaching screws that provide quite a bit of
variation to fit screw hole location.

It's good to know that the two lenses perform similarly with regard
to resolution, and that the DA21 has a slight edge on the FA20, but
1m is a bit close for a real evaluation of potential image quality.

OT: "New" stuff in Columbus

2006-07-18 Thread Collin R Brendemuehl
I was in Chick's camera today. It's one of the oldest of the stores
in town and has a lot of old inventory.
They've got a bunch of excellent-looking screw mount stuff
and
one M50/4 macro that's basically as new in box. Plastic bag isn't
there, but the rest is.
(Unfortunately they want good prices for the stuff, but it's really
excellent looking.
So if you're looking for some vintage stuff, there's some in Columbus.

ALSO I was told at one store which sells a lot to KEH that KEH can't
get enough film stuff.
Amazing. Prices have dropped but sales rates are still good. Lower,
but good enough to keep going.

Sincerely,

2006-07-18 Thread Aaron Reynolds
Dunno, the DA Limiteds remind me a lot of the M series. I'm really impressed
with the build and size, and of course the clutch thingamajig.

The FA Limiteds are gorgeous, but I'd say the DA ones are even nicer.

I don't really think I'll shoot much or any 35mm film from now on, so the lack
of an aperture ring and the digital-only coverage don't bother me in the
slightest. Hell, I hadn't shot any 35mm film in nearly a year BEFORE I bought
the DS2. I'm glad I never got around to selling most of my 35mm lenses.

PESO: how about this one? (infrared)

2006-07-18 Thread Ralf R. Radermacher
OK, ok, you've convinced me. I've deleted the last one I had uploaded to
the Russian site. A single commment, over here, zero from the folks on
the site itself - if ever there's such a thing as a clear vote... :-)

Now, how about this one:

http://www.photosight.ru/photo.php?photoid=1544630

I'm not quite sure if the filter really is a #88 or rather something of
East German origin, supposedly ORWO, and no longer avaliable.

It's a gelatin filter, if you hold it against the sun it looks much like
a #89 but it needs far longer exposure times (about 4 sec. as opposed to
1/15 sec. with a 89B), and it produces a much more pronounced IR effect.

Looking forward to your comments.

I think you mean "lousy scanners can't handle..." ;)

The SprintScan 120 much prefers a properly exposed and processed neg. A low
base density is preferable, but that's also true for printing.

Acros in Studional is great for this -- the base is virtually clear.

Too thin actually means too thin. Underexposed negs are thinner than
properly exposed negs. I tend to develop for slightly thinner negs as
tehy scan better than ones developed to print well (Scanners can't
handle as much contrast as wet paper often wants).

I agree with Jack. Plus, I prefer a bit more contrast than most

I much prefer the second shot. Better composition, nicer rendering of
the lady. Both could be brighter in the foreground, but I would
preserve the color and rendering of the sky.

Re: PESO: the long walk home

2006-07-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
A good effort and a nice concept. I would prefer to see the man at
the right of frame. This emphasizes the distance he must walk. I
would probably crop it below the bright sky area. The overall mood is
dreary. Keep the bright sky out of it. A bit less contrast would be
helpful. There is no detail in the dark suit the man is wearing or in
the white bag he is carrying. A nitpick to be sure, but hopefully
something to think about. But overall this is a solid execution. You
demonstrate a good sense of what makes for an interesting photo.
Let's see more!

RE: PESO - Jump

2006-07-18 Thread Tom C
I disagree in part. I don't find the photo offensive. I'm simply pointing
out to the sender and to others that there may be a danger in viewing it
albeit small. Let's say it's not a nosy underworld corporate spy, but a
cubicle mate who happens to eyeball my screen when the picture appears, and
they may be psychotic (they're not thank goodness), and they go tell my
boss.

Unfortunately, wishing it to be so doesn't change the way the world works.
Put a collection of 50 pictures like this in a book and call it the "The
joys of Childhood" and see where that lands you.

Jim,
A very slight nit. Timing likely didn't allow it, but had the figure
with the umbrella been caught before the umbrella blended into the
window sill, the image might have benefited.
I do like his air of determined acceptance in the course of his walk.

Re: OT: Developer

2006-07-18 Thread graywolf
Nah, it is true. For one thing autoexposure changes the exposure with
every change of background where a human would not touch it. Now you can
override that but it is just one more step in the direction of letting
machines run you instead of you running them. I do like my little
digicam, but the fact I have to fight it instead of it working with me
is a bummer. Now if I could get a fully-manual-old-style-controls
version I would probably be willing to sell Franks bike to buy it.

RE: PESO: the long walk home

2006-07-18 Thread Bob W
I think I can see what you're after, but there are a couple of
problems with it, from my point of view. In black & white photos the
viewer's eye is naturally drawn first to the lightest objects, in this
case the shopping bag and the road signs, and that unfortunately
detracts from the main subject, so it took me a moment to fix on the
man and his umbrella. I would have preferred it with him further back
in the frame, without the railway bridge and the signs, and a little
closer. I think that would still have conveyed effectively the
dilapidation of the environment and the sense of a dull walk in the
rain.

Well, you know what, the more you accept their view of things the more
they'll impose it on you.

It's a beautiful, innocent picture of a kid having fun, and we should
all celebrate and enjoy that - there's so little of it left in the
world.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is a twisted pervert and should go screw
themselves rather than waste all our time with their mean little
minds.

yes, agreed, so would I...

sadly I was also holding an umbrella at the time (with my chin & shoulder),
trying to prevent my new (old) Spotmatic from getting rained on... I was

It really was bucketing down...

Oddly, I think this was a Sunday.

You're making my life a lot more interesting than it actually is. I
never actually met the lady. She was there, I was there, and I had a
camera. Six frames out of about 40 had her as a part of a composition.
I thought about lending a sympathetic ear, but I'm probably a bit too
old for her, though you never know...

FA 24-90

2006-07-18 Thread np
I need an FA 24-90mm, or something similar, for my brother's wedding this
August 19th. Last time I used this lens, I was borrowing it from my Pentax
rep, but he doesn't have it anymore.

If anyone out there has the FA 24-90 (or something similar), I would really
appreciate it if I could borrow it for a week or two in August. I will gladly
pay shipping costs, and can even give a deposit for it. I realized last night
that I don't have an AF zoom lens with a good wide angle and decent telephoto
zoom, and can't really afford to buy one at the moment.

Thanks,
John Celio

PESO: the long walk home

2006-07-18 Thread jim kerslake
Hopefully this is not a discouraging PESO -
I think it has some obvious flaws, but would like others' opinions.

This is from my first ever roll of b&w film (Ilford FP4) through an original
Spotmatic with the standard 55mm Takumar -
So plenty of grain then :-)

I'm not the best at scanning negs either.

I think I just sympathised with this guy -
I seem to spend half my life trudging to and from work like this.

I wanted to capture a sense of the world bearing down upon him, as well as
the rain.

I was in two minds about cropping off the whole top third of the image - but
in the end opted to leave it.

The problem is being comfortable in yourself that "you" don't consider
it necessary.
If the case of two scenic images were being judged by me, and all else
being equal as is true in this case, I'd have to go with the cropped
image as being more attuned to the rules requiring a compositional
balance.
I, also, realize I'm allowed to chose the one I like for my wall.

I´m buying the 21 because of its size, and because I hope it is
better with respect to distortion.

I would love to have a 20mm 2.0, but that is not a possibility right
now (Sigma has far too much quality variation for me to put any money
close to it). Also, a limited lens like that will be very expensive.

Re: SV: 21mm limitted is a jewel ...

2006-07-18 Thread Thibouille
IMO if Pentax still prodoces FA Limited (well at least it is in their
catalog) when they also sell DA Limited is obvious: DA Limited arent's
supposed to replace FA Limited.

FA LImited are Limited because of their quality and speed.
DA Limited are Limited because of their quality, size and speed.

Obviously Pentax wanna show what they can do producing very compact lenses.

Pentax still could introduce of so they want other Limityed lenses
(even DA ones) which are not Limited because of their pancakes style
but ony by their speed and quality. Who knows?
As long as Pentax doesn't stop selling FA Limited nobody should state
the DA ones replace the FA ones.

Also, about the price of the 21 Limited: you're paying for the size!
If it doesn't suit you (which is of course you right) you can disagree
but it is a Small and good (it seems from the first impressions) 21mm.
Could have been F/4. We are lucky enough it is F/3.2.

Just my 2 cents of course.

Well, Sigma does make a 20mm f1.8 just for folks like you.

But it's bigger than the DS.

Were I a digital guy, putting the 21mm pancake on a Pentax digital
body would make a great package for street shooting, both in terms of
total compactness and focal length. For that purpose, I rarely shoot
much wider open then f4.0 anyway, usually much smaller. f3.2 would
suite me just fine for most of my purposes.

However at this time, it's all moot.

Pentax telephoto lens mount

2006-07-18 Thread Tom Reese
I've been looking at the mounting collars on my Pentax big glass and they all
have the exact same footprint. I can see where that would be a good thing if
anyone actually built QR plates to fit them.

For those who haven't seen the Pentax collars, the foot has a removable metal
plate with a standard tripod thread in the center of it. The foot also has two
smaller holes that could be useful to stabilize the lens if anyone made a QR
plate with the proper hardware to take advantage of them. I see a market for a
QR plate with two metal pins to fit the smaller holes and the usual screw with
tripod thread. The metal pins would be useful to keep the lens from rotating
around the tripod screw.

Has anyone seen a plate that works in that fashion with Pentax glass? know
most QR systems have the little nubs than can be placed against the edge of the
foot but I think a plate with pins would be a better solution.
