Hi

I have a question arround the magnification factors on macro lenses. If you
use a 1:1 lense on film the image is life size on the negative. What does
this translate to on an aps-c size sensor 1.5:1 ?. I use the a100 f4 macro
which is 1:2 would this then translate to 0.75:1 or 3 quarters life size. I
know that as I am not doing any measurements on the resulting image and use
the lense as the size and framing I want it is imaterial. I wouls however
like to know.

Thanks

Thanks for the answer. I agree with what you are saying but I think my
question is as follows. Assuming I needed 1:1 to fill the frame on film with
a specific subject I would obviously need to back off a bit and a lower
magnification to fill the frame on digital with the same subject. I would
now be working at less than life size would I not? Is this difference also a
factor of 1.5 like on telephoto?

Life size is life size.
35mm film sees more real estate than APS-C.

Keep watching. I picked up the FA 28-105/4-5.6 from ebay for $150US or less.
There are so many Pentax autofocus zooms of the 28-80 or 28-90 variety that
folks don't know how good the original FA 28-105 is.

AFAIK there is no such thing as an FA* 28-105.

There are three different FA 28-105 lenses:

o The original 28-105/f4-5.6 - this is the one with Power Zoom capability

o A later 28-105/f4-f5.6 [IF](note the Power Zoom lens is not IF)

  o A 28-105/f3.2-f4.5 AL [IF]

I have the original PZ version, which is indeed an excellent lens.
Other people who have the third lens (maximum aperture f3.2) have good
things to say about it - it may even be a little bit better than the
first one (and I must admit IF is very handy when using a polarizer).

I had it in my latter film years and I loved it a lot. I did some
comparison test with the budget but respected 28-70/4 and the 28-105
was a clear winner. They were about the same size and weight, another plus for
my taste (the powerzoom that you own is bigger).
When moving to digital I found its range not too convenient so I ended up

It is actually a regular open stage event run by a musician friend,
so I get a lot of leeway to experiment. I dislike flash at concerts
too, but at this open stage the lighting is essentially flat. The
stage floods are unattended and simply set to full-on white, which
isn't a lot of light because they're kind of el-cheapo LED floods.
I was getting tired of the uniformly blah look I was getting and
decided to mix things up a bit by adding my own light. I plan to
try gels at some point too.

I've only put up one shot so far but I am processing a number of
others to go up. Here's that one:

That actually works pretty well - just looks like another element of
the stage lighting!

Re: Candle making

2009-04-21 Thread William Robb

- Original Message -
From: Nick Wright

Subject: GESO: Candle making

My primary goal as a photographer is to photograph people who are
making their living in artful ways.

Here is the first in a (hopefully) long series of personal projects
dedicated to that goal.

I don't really consider the essay finished so I might be adding on
to it in the future.

http://blog.nickdavidwright.com/2009/04/candle-making.html

Well Nick, I was going to keep my stupid mouth shut but..
For me, this image falls into the category of epic fail.
It tell me abosolutely nothing about the process of candle making, infact if
you hadn't mentioned what he was doing, I wouldn't have a clue about what he
is doing.
There is no defined subject, the rack of whatever those things are on the
right is out of focus and by the time they are in focus they are
indistiguishable as far as what they are is.
About the only thing I can say for sure is that it looks like his furnace
needs servicing.
The following might be a bit harsh, but there is no drama in your picture.
The light is bland, the scene is sterile and there is absolutely nothing
happening in it.

It's like a still life of nothing.

So, now that I've ripped your hear out, where do we go?

I don't think you can capture the essence of the craft of an artisan unless
he is actually creating something. If he is making poured candles in molds,
focus on one or two molds and show us what it looks like when the wax is
being poured into them.
Frankly, I don't care what the guy looks like, I want to see his hands
working, which means get in close and show us what he is doing.
Preparing molds is the cooking equivalent of washing dishes. No one cares
about that part, it's making candles that I came to see.
Show us what that looks like, and think of a way to make it look like it is
actually an interesting thing to do.

Just kidding John, sorry to hear this happened. I had my fa 70-200

My fa 28-105 pz lens works well on the K10, so me i might get it fixed.

Ok, I must be a butterfingers, but I dropped my MZ-S and FA* 28-105 Sunday,

some paint chips, but the lens is cactus.  The zoom barrel is bent, so it
won't zoom, and the repair cost is near the price of one of the FA 28-105.

So, if I want to continue to use occasional film, I have choices:

Use a Sigma 28-80 - Ok in some ways, but I lose a very useful 25mm from the
 long end.
Use an A70-210 - brilliant lens, but heavy and starts too long.
Forget about zooms and use 28,50 and 135 primes - a classic kit, but then I
do lose some flexibility, and I have to carry a bag!
Bite the bullet and buy the newer 28-105 - available now but reputedly not
 quite as good.
Bite the bullet and wait for another FA* 28-105 to appear on Ebay.
Bite the bullet and get it repaired.

 Woe is me!

I waited for so long for this lens for the horse shows, now its not
really needed, and kept putting off the 50-135, which is now more
useful but more expensive.

I'll see what happens over the next few months, but at this point, I am just
not excited by this lens any more. it's been too long in coming, long enough
that I have found a couple of more primes within the range instead. I'm more

Is it not also true that if you make an 8x10 from the film 1:1, and an

Or are we going to throw the resolution of the negative vs the

the recorded image from smaller digital format

factor of 1.5 like on telephoto?

 Yes. :-)

Is it not also true that if you make an 8x10 from the film 1:1, and an
8x10 from the digital image, they will both show full size images, or
full frame and be essentially the same?

Or are we going to throw the resolution of the negative vs the
resolution of the sensor into the equation?

(I know that optically the image thrown on the sensor will be smaller

I held off commenting on this, because I felt my comment was going to be
sort of weird. Then I read part of the thread later and realized, huh, maybe
it wouldn't be so weird after all.

The BW far outshines the color, because it has a sinister element. See?
But since you've read that comment from others, maybe you get it, maybe not.

The bunny rabbit looks like something out of Stephen King's IT in BW, and
the woman in the mirror is harder to see, so the child seems more alone
and the woman's motives remain unclear (rather than just mother accompanying
child). That is the best I can come up with to explain why I had the
sinister reaction. Also look at the bunny's eyes in the BW and then in color
and
see if you see what I mean.

Nice shot, naturally. Really well composed.

Lovely. The sticker adds a bit of irony to the image that changes it
entirely, in an emotional sense, speaking as one who has over 300,000
motorcycle miles and many experiences (both glad and sad) with the
challenge of motorcycling.

My, that's in good shape.

Any idea what that thing under the front wheel might be?

I almost think I'd prefer this one in colour; it's too spring-and-hope
to really fit with black and white, at least according to whatever
warped aesthetics I appear to use.
