If you use a 1:1 lense on film the image is life size on the negative. What does this translate to on an aps-c size sensor 1.5:1 ?. I use the a100 f4 macro which is 1:2 would this then translate to 0.75:1 or 3 quarters life size. I know that as I am not doing any measurements on the resulting image and use the lense as the size and framing I want it is imaterial. I wouls however like to know. Thanks for the answer. I agree with what you are saying but I think my question is as follows. Assuming I needed 1:1 to fill the frame on film with a specific subject I would obviously need to back off a bit and a lower magnification to fill the frame on digital with the same subject. I would now be working at less than life size would I not? Is this difference also a factor of 1.5 like on telephoto? - Original Message - From: Nick Wright Subject: GESO: Candle making My primary goal as a photographer is to photograph people who are making their living in artful ways. Here is the first in a (hopefully) long series of personal projects dedicated to that goal. I don't really consider the essay finished so I might be adding on to it in the future. http://blog.nickdavidwright.com/2009/04/candle-making.html Well Nick, I was going to keep my stupid mouth shut but.. For me, this image falls into the category of epic fail. It tell me abosolutely nothing about the process of candle making, infact if you hadn't mentioned what he was doing, I wouldn't have a clue about what he is doing. There is no defined subject, the rack of whatever those things are on the right is out of focus and by the time they are in focus they are indistiguishable as far as what they are is. About the only thing I can say for sure is that it looks like his furnace needs servicing. The following might be a bit harsh, but there is no drama in your picture. The light is bland, the scene is sterile and there is absolutely nothing happening in it. It's like a still life of nothing. So, now that I've ripped your hear out, where do we go? I don't think you can capture the essence of the craft of an artisan unless he is actually creating something. If he is making poured candles in molds, focus on one or two molds and show us what it looks like when the wax is being poured into them. Frankly, I don't care what the guy looks like, I want to see his hands working, which means get in close and show us what he is doing. Preparing molds is the cooking equivalent of washing dishes. No one cares about that part, it's making candles that I came to see. Show us what that looks like, and think of a way to make it look like it is actually an interesting thing to do. The BW far outshines the color, because it has a sinister element. See? But since you've read that comment from others, maybe you get it, maybe not. The bunny rabbit looks like something out of Stephen King's IT in BW, and the woman in the mirror is harder to see, so the child seems more alone and the woman's motives remain unclear (rather than just mother accompanying child). That is the best I can come up with to explain why I had the sinister reaction. Also look at the bunny's eyes in the BW and then in color and see if you see what I mean. Nice shot, naturally.
