Re: Is Ricoh Going to Buy Pentax????????

2011-06-30 Thread P. J. Alling
Ricoh left the SLR business years ago. I really hate to say this but,
this looks too much Konica buying up Minolta, and we all know how that
turned out. Minolta users were lucky that Sony was looking to enter the
DSLR market.

If Hoya wasn't big enough to keep Pentax a going concern, how the hell
is Ricoh going to do it?

I assume this is good news for Pentax users?

Ricoh probably care a bit more about cameras than Hoya do,
and they seem to put a high value on the current products.

I just realised that I haven't posted this to the list and I am such a bad

goes: My daughter is in the top 10 in the Australian Search for the next

You may remember Molly-Rose as I photograph her so much and she is all

my portfolio with her ginormous eyes!

Anyways, she has beaten over 1600 entrants Nationwide, to get where she is
and if she wins, will receive $10k and also record the new Milky Bar TVC

New Zealand next month.

So,Final shameless Mummy Plug (I promise)! I just realised that today

you

is

driving us nutts! If she doesn't win, I think I might go on holiday to the
Himalayas for a week whilst she grieves! lol.

The link to the site to vote is here: www.milkybar.com.au and she is the
second last picture on the page.

Thanks guys, hopefully we will have some great news to announce come

Crazy question: adapters for Red lenses to K-mount?

2011-06-30 Thread Larry Colen
A friend of mine just got a job as a Digital Image Technician, and gets
intermittent access to a RED for shooting his own video. One of the lenses in
the kit is an 85/1.4 and I can't help but wonder if I could get an adapter to
mount a PL mount lens on a Pentax.

Since there's no mirror in the system, I expect that it has too short of a
registration distance. My google fu isn't up to finding the answer, but since
there seems to be an adapter to use Nikon mount lenses on the red, it's a long
shot. But, I kind of have to ask.

So hey everyone! I know I haven't been around of late much, been crazy
busy, will fill you all in soon, however...

I just realised that I haven't posted this to the list and I am such a bad
mummy for not doing so! Some of you have seen this on Facebook, but, here
goes: My daughter is in the top 10 in the Australian Search for the next
Milky Bar Kid!!

You may remember Molly-Rose as I photograph her so much and she is all over
my portfolio with her ginormous eyes!

Anyways, she has beaten over 1600 entrants Nationwide, to get where she is
and if she wins, will receive $10k and also record the new Milky Bar TVC in
New Zealand next month.

So,Final shameless Mummy Plug (I promise)! I just realised that today is
the big day! Voting for the Milky Bar Kid closes at midnight tonight! If you
haven't already, please vote for our beautiful Molly-Rose Mayer-Love, she is
driving us nutts! If she doesn't win, I think I might go on holiday to the
Himalayas for a week whilst she grieves! lol.

The link to the site to vote is here: www.milkybar.com.au and she is the
second last picture on the page.

Thanks guys, hopefully we will have some great news to announce come Monday
when we find out who the winner is!

Glad to send my vote Molly-Rose's way. After all, what good is

My friend from tango, Ethel, who I've posted some pictures of now and then:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157626032758279/

Is about to head to Oz for a couple of months, and would really appreciate
some local contacts. I'm not sure of her itinerary, I suspect that a lot of
it will be made up as she goes along.

If you're interested in, or willing to be, a local tour guide, or at least
someone she can contact for local info, drop me a note and I'll introduce
you, rather than posting her email to a publicly archived list.

  Larry

PS, she's as nice as she is pretty.

I tell you what, Pentax Australia is finally taking a bit of notice of me now,

In all honesty, I *have* struggled in the past months due to the sensor noise

It looks like I'm up to 14 pictures accepted, and somewhat at a loss as to

Sounds like a good trip. Enjoy.
I have to agree with Mark's decision to take the 16-50/2.8. I've never used the

Or use Adblock Plus for Firefox or Chrome, which can automatically
fetch blocklist updates, and is capable of finer-grained blocking than
a hosts file (e.g., blocking the /ads/ subdirectory of a website,
without blocking everything else).

Re: Photo.net no more

2011-06-30 Thread John Sessoms
You need a space in there between "127.0.0.1" and "ads.doubleclick.net".
The line should read:

127.0.0.1 ads.doubleclick.net

Comments in the hosts file begin with '#'

There's a good site for pre-written hosts files:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

Also contains a lot of troubleshooting information. Apparently Windows
Vista and Windows 7 don't want to let you make changes to the hosts file.

From: Ecke PDML

In Windows, open C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in notepad and
add a line that says 127.0.0.1ads.doubleclick.net then restart your
computer and links to that server will go straight to nirvana =)

RE: Cat photo

Our little friend Zephyr died Saturday ant age 17+
http://www.robertstech.com/temp/

I've always been more of a "dog person" myself, but since meeting Lisa
and her cats I've come to the conclusion that it's the owner and how
they raise the pet that makes the difference. Zephyr was the
friendliest, most affectionate cats I've ever known. He used to follow
me around like a puppy at times. He'd had chronic pancreatitis for
years and then eventually became diabetic, requiring twice-daily
insulin injections. He also has asthma, with occasional noisy
mid-night coughing attacks. He had a good, long life and was
definitely "high maintenance" but we still miss the little guy.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a little buddy
like that.

I think that I've done the majority of my shooting with those two lenses
lately. The K-5 does so well at high ISO that the 16-50 is usually fast
enough, and the 77 is my favorite lens.
Even if I could get along without a tele, I'd be very tempted to bring

Re: Photo.net no more

2011-06-30 Thread John Sessoms

From: Stan Halpin

What some of us object to is the big pop-up that appears about 1
second into the page-load process. The pop-up covers about 80-90% of
the window and (for me at least) is blank. Presumably, if I wait long
enough, some advertising pitch will appear in that pop-up. I have
never waited long enough to find out, I just close the photo.net
window and go on to something else.

Ok, I have never seen that.

I don't even get the little bar across the top that I occasionally get
from other sites that says "Firefox has prevented this site from opening
a pop-up window."

I wonder if maybe I got a pop-up form Photo.net one time years ago &
just told Firefox I didn't want to allow Photo.net to open pop-up windows.

Does anyone know if Firefox will do that; just allow you to designate a
site to never open a pop-up and "don't ask me again"?

My friend from tango, Ethel, who I've posted some pictures of now and then:

Is about to head to Oz for a couple of months, and would really appreciate some
local contacts. I'm not sure of her itinerary, I suspect that a lot of it will
be made up as she goes along.

If you're interested in, or willing to be, a local tour guide, or at least
someone she can contact for local info, drop me a note and I'll introduce you,
rather than posting her email to a publicly archived list.

"I am leaving Pentax because it limits me..."

2011-06-30 Thread Timber
Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr,
and maybe a K5 update later...

But how many times I heard this from friends... countless.

Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio
photography.

I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a
friend of mine directed me to his page. (FYI:
http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ )

So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough
for studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already
reached his level and you feel it's not enough for you?

Obviously... the answer is no :D

But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love
Sony's new system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and
most importantly, videos. But is it really that important? Well... no.

But which other company offers you the possibility to try the
astrophotography for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so
comfortable that you don't really want to use a battery grip to make the
use of the camera comfortable?

But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the
3rd party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of
the main concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with
Pentax :)

So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a
bit more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good
partner for my photography needs.

Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read so
many rants then why not a praise? :)

Regards,
.t

Well - it's not as if you're removing a pimple from the nose of a well known
movie star or politician. The fawn isn't a recognizable individual, so I
don't believe that this is a case of distorting reality.

I wouldn't hesitate in getting rid of them, unless I was illustrating an

The new Pens look very good, but it's the lens announcements that
pique my interest. Fast 12 and 45 mm, add the new Summilux 25mm from
Panasonic, and they now have my preferred lens kit in hand. All they
need beyond that, in addition to the existing FT/mFT macro lenses, is
a fast 85mm ... for me, anyway.

I fully expect the next pro-grade body from Olympus following the E-5
to be 100% compatible with Micro-FourThirds lenses as well as
FourThirds SLR lenses. That will most likely have built-in an even
better EVF than the current Olympus VF-2 option. That's what I'm
waiting for before doing any expansion of my Olympus system gear.

Thanks everyone, glad you like it.

How I did it. F100macro and af160c ringflash on full auto and shot
directly from above. The light of the flash also passes through the
flower itself which probabky creates the nice colors. No colorbalance
tweaking in lightroom.

Re: OT - Olympus does it right

2011-06-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

Thanks. I was hoping that the popup flash would provide a bit of fill, but I
guess that it didn't have the oomph. I wish that I had a ring flash to use to
play with fill on shots like these. Just enough to illuminate the subject but
not enough to illuminate the background. Though that would require being fairly
close to get several stops difference using inverse square.

Ann,
Well framed and caught.
I especially liked that the guy was engaged in conversation with the woman.

July PUG - It's a bit Strange

2011-06-30 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all

There's still room for a bit more 'strangeness' in the July PUG. So far
11 contributors.

The cut off date for submissions is nominally 30 June but the submission
form should be up for a bit longer yet.

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or
lens used is Pentax.

Also - as not all browsers are colour space aware, if you embed a colour
space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure the image looks right on
line. I usually check the colour space of submitted images but I've
been known to forget.

Cheers

Brian

Re: GESO (4) - Toronto Old City Hall

Thanks, Bob!

Oh, there are =plenty= more... but I'm in "editing mode."

The angle at which I shot #2 makes it look crooked no matter how one rotates
it. I chose to line up the verticals.

Cheers,
