Re: Any Photo Annuals arrived yet?

2018-05-14 Thread Bruce Walker
Mine arrived about an hour ago and I've had a most enjoyable read.

You know, our images really seem to sing when seen printed in this
format. I do believe some major kudos are due to Mark for preparing
the image files for printed reproduction -- Mark, clearly you really
know what you're doing. :) Thank you!

Of course it's a collection of the best of the best -- and they are
really good! -- so it's difficult for me to single any out for extra
praise. But I have to observe that the man to beat for composition has
got to be Dag Thrane. I really love those images.

BTW, my copy of the book had an unrelated Blurb book appended to it: a
celebration of the life of one Rick Samuels, complete with coded
internal Blurb instructions. Did that happen to anyone else? I suppose
I should contact Blurb's support folks, but maybe this will make my
copy even more of a collector's item than it's destined to be now?

Re: OT iBook G4 to recycle

2018-05-09 Thread Bruce Walker
If it's like my 12" G4 Powerbook, no quick way. That design buried the HDD
inside requiring much disassembly to reach.

If you can get it booted from an old Mac OS X DVD you can use the Format
app to do a security format where it overwrites the entire disk with
several passes of data patterns designed to make it _really_ hard to
recover anything. It's good enough unless you have The Secrets To World
Domination on there and the Illuminati are after you for them.

If not bootable, you could drill a hole or three right through the case and
the drive to render it inoperable. You should be able to locate the drive's
position from that online video.

SmugMug will have to figure that out together with Yahoo. Yahoo
purposely reconfigured the Flickr authentication process to be
integrated with Yahoo's many years ago and I'm pretty sure that by now
all the original Flickr login credentials are history. Part of the
ownership cut-over will have to involve separating Flickr completely
from any Yahoo infrastructure in a clean way. It's been done before --
correctly -- so I'm confident it will happen in this case too and I'm
not too concerned myself.

I just hope they manage a cleaner cutover than the TSB/Lloyd's banking disaster.

Re: The further degradation of my equipment... (no not that, how could you think such a thing).

2018-04-30 Thread Bruce Walker
Nobody who works with images should consider a TN monitor. There's
little price difference between them them and IPS displays nowadays,
and TN monitors are dreadful for editing on. Every angle you look at
the screen from gets you a different rendering (eg blackpoint,
contrast and brightness), so calibrating one is pointless. TN monitors
should be reserved for getting the news and weather on.

Re: DxO Labs, spin off from DxO Mark in receivership.

2018-04-28 Thread Bruce Walker
Being a Nik user is a curse, these days. Talk about on again, off again.

I started to wean myself off of Nik plugin dependencies when Google
announced end-of-life on it. I now have some diy Photoshop actions
that work for what I regularly used Nik for, and a handful of b
conversion techniques that do for me what Silver Efex used to. I still
use the RAW sharpener pre-pass, but I'll eventually work up a
replacement for that too.

But it sounds like the DxO receivership thing may not be the end of
the line. The company sent this note to one of their customers:

"In fact, the company has recently been placed under a regime of
judicial administration, the time to reorganize.

Although we can not comment on this situation, we can nevertheless
assure you that the company is absolutely not in liquidation and that
we are confident that our customers will not be affected by this
procedure."

Re: PESO: Pirates

2018-04-25 Thread Bruce Walker
Well, _that_ ain't right, John! (Duh! :-) )

That dreadful amount of sluggishness suggests a severe system
bottleneck somewhere, or something's just broken. I was using CS5
(circa 2010 version) prior to a recent CC upgrade to edit my 645Z .dng
files (converted to layered TIFF by Lightroom) and responsiveness was
always quite snappy. Nothing at all like what you are describing.

On paper your system sounds like it should be a speed demon. Have you
tried profiling the system with any general purpose benchmarking apps
to exercise the various pipes?

Is your SSD scratch drive large enough to not fill up when working
with the large layered files? Have you accidentally configured Ps to
put any one of its scratch files onto a slow device? Ps will use all
the file locations you mention to it, so you could remove them all and
just give it one to work with.

Have you enabled any advanced device features for a peripheral (eg the
nVidia) which it actually cannot handle well? You might try turning
off any special features like the GPU to see what effect that has.

It sure shouldn't be acting like you're seeing, John. My sympathies;
most frustrating, I know.

Re: PESO: Pirates

2018-04-25 Thread Bruce Walker
A very cinematic scene, John.

Have you tinkered with the Performances settings in the Preferences
menu? There are some good tutorial notes and videos in the Adobe help
site (and elsewhere) that explain the effects of these.

Which specific actions are slow, or is the entire app sluggish? I
usually find it's one or two specific filters or activities that are
really slow.

Re: Strobes, studio and students

2018-04-22 Thread Bruce Walker
Mark, what you experienced is one of the reasons I don't recommend folks
try that popup flash triggering hack. The other of course is the light
pollution from the popup flash getting into the shot and flattening the
contrast.

But you have at least two possible issues with each student's camera: the
x-TTL pre-flash, and the "red eye reduction" pre-flash. Either or both of
these might be enabled in any given camera.

The xTTL preflash is usually enabled even if manual exposure is in use
because of the possibility for remote flash control. I used to use that
feature with the K20D and the K-3 as a poor man's remote trigger. No danger
of the popup flash appearing in the shot because it doesn't fire when the
shutter is open.

But it only works with flashes that support a pre-flash -- manufacturer
dependent timing -- and some newer Chinese strobes that can be set to
ignore 1-n pre-flashes.

BTW, most PCB strobes come with a really long old-school PC-Sync cable.
That might have helped with any of the students cameras that have a sync
socket.

Re: What makes a photo work in color or black and white

2018-03-16 Thread Bruce Walker
I'm still figuring out my reasons for going with b, but they
generally incorporate some of your points, especially the subject
isolation, with some of Paul's -- mood, etc.

I find that a lot of spontaneous location shots will have a
disharmonious colour palette, so b removes that factor entirely and
improves the image no end.

The more I study folks like Peter Lindbergh the more I admire good
b, and try to emulate that style.

A really handy feature of b is free skin processing. Portraits of
most folks look quite a bit better in b than colour, especially if
they have any skin redness or blotchiness. And for even more free
retouching, simply adding the digital equivalent of a red filter helps
enormously.

Re: PESO - airborne

2018-03-16 Thread Bruce Walker
Thank you very much, Alan. I'm glad this appeals.

I agree with you re the demanding nature of dance. This woman is one
of the most fit people I've met in my life. She has to work and
practice constantly to be able to perform ballet. Shortly after our
shoot she appeared in a series of Christmas performances of The
Nutcracker being put on in a city west of Toronto.

I sure appreciate the comparison, Ann. Thanks!

Re: Experience with third-party batteries

2018-03-05 Thread Bruce Walker
I can only disrecommend, but that's based on a single try. I gave my
$25 (Can) D-Li90 clone a good Amazon review initially as it held a
good long charge and seemed to be a very cost-effective replacement.
Then it faded really fast after 10 months or so and wouldn't take a
charge at all.

Back to OEM batteries for me after that. Damn, they are pricey. They
are $90 Can here.

Re: photo dot net phun

2018-02-25 Thread Bruce Walker
I went so far as to have a paid 500px account for one year and I
thought it was pretty good. Then.

But I dislike it a lot now, and have abandoned ship. Haven't posted
there in many years. They have made changes since then, but afaict
it's still a pale imitation of Flickr for features (eg groups,
galleries), and the voting system is this crazy popularity thing that
encourages HDR'ed landscapes, 3D wildlife, and
macros-with-massive-bokeh. Everything looks the same.

To be fair, that it-all-devolves-to-uniform-sameness issue afflicts
all the popularity based social media sites, I guess. Like Instagram.

I have stuck with Flickr, ignoring all the doomsayers, and I feel it
may be making a minor comeback.

Re: photo dot net phun

2018-02-25 Thread Bruce Walker
Dave, are you sure that unpaid Flickr doesn't let you make albums? I
mean, have you tested lately? They made major changes to the "levels"
a few years ago and made Free the one-size-fits-all choice. They made
the upper limit on image storage huge (like no limit?), and made many
"pro" features available at the free level. In fact there's pretty
much no reason to pay for an account there now, aside from eliminating
ads.

Barely an option when it comes to Pentax. Both Vistek and Henry's have
all but stopped carrying any Pentax kit. All K-mount bodies are
"special order" and all 645 stuff is discontinued.

I'm about to get a new 645 lens and it will have to be either through
The Camera Store or import from the US (B). They are as real as is
available.

Made my three submissions ... finally. I had three "definites" shortly

Fortunately there's no undo option, or I'm sure I'd be back to

In my (limited) experience, that oversaturated popping you see is the
whole intent. UHD adds an HDR equivalent process along with deeper
blacks, so exaggerated contrast is the result.

Ugly source material is also a factor. My setup came with a 4K UHD
Blu-ray of a kids animated flick (latest Ice Age installment) and it
was eyeball searingly awful to view. I will be tossing that disk onto
eBay I think.

BTW, in the fall I got a 4K UHD projector (Optoma UHD60) and Blu-ray
(Samsung UBD-M9500/ZA) and that acts as our "TV" as well as the main
purpose of screening movies. Watching films on a 100" screen is a
joyful experience. :) The Blu-ray is on the net and streams anything
we'd be interested in, like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube
documentaries, and a host of other stuff.

I spent some time fine-tuning the image through projector and Blu-ray
adjustments and I was able to tone down the saturation and crud so
movies look good.

Also, I just posted a lower key headshot of her:

Hands are so tricky, Ann. I made an effort to thwart her conditioned

thought that this one headshot ("Iryna 3") managed to best capture

She and I are in Mississauga, right at the boundary with Toronto in
southern Ontario. She is a dance coach, former champion ballroom
dancer, and cheerleader. She's presently getting a degree from one of
the universities here. A very hard-working young woman!

If you've managed to kill that many Model M's there must be some sort
of dubious prize out there somewhere waiting for you.

Those things are built like frakking *tanks*!

Bruce N.

Baxter the cat jumped off my shoulder onto my desk and knocked a full
cup of coffee over into my keyboard. She's gone off to sulk because she
didn't like being scooped up and moved out of the way so I could try to
dry the keyboard with towels.

Cat's alright (other than some hurt feelings) but the keyboard is DEAD!

I had to dig out my last spare, brand new in the box, Genuine IBM Model

I should have bought more than a dozen way back when.

I finally bought a Squeezerlens tilt/shift gadget for my 645z because
I had a hankering to dabble with pictorialism once again. After
shooting a few random scenes and objects I booked a shoot with a
visual artist slash model from Seattle who was just visiting the area.
That went astoundingly well and here is the best shot so far ...

The Squeezerlens is hand made by a nice German guy named Frank
Baeseler, and versions exist for various mounts, including the Pentax
645. (I would have simply bought a Lensbaby but they don't do anything
for medium format.)

http://squeezerlens.com/medium-squeezerlens.html

The optic in my copy is a Leitz Hektor (120 mm, f:2.5) projector lens.
It produces all kinds of wonderful distortion and looks super dreamy

I'd try b conversions to go with the black background. I find that
de-emphasizing colour and just focusing on light and shadow works best with
the static, statuesque poses. If you go for a bit of glamor it just muddles
the message.

Are you quite certain you are using a fast enough SD card, and is
there any possibility that you might have enabled any processing
feature(s) that could be slowing things up?

Even with the much larger 645Z files I have _never_ encountered

Infuckingtolerable.

Try a factory reset and a known fast card.
