I tried 4 AA batteries in my PZ1-p last month and it works

battery. I just need to find out a nice way to hold the
batteries.

 Thanks Rob!

So does it mean, that I could try connecting 4 AA-cells to my PZ-1
without fearing that it will damage the camera circuitry? I had
seen this page earlier but would want to go ahead only if someone
tells me that I can't damage the camera by connecting incorrect
amperage to the camera. Of course may refuse to work, but I just
want to know whether I can potentially damage the camera.

Battery grip

2002-06-29 Thread suaide

Hello all,

Just a question. I am trying to build a battery grip for my PZ1-p
but, instead of do it from scratch I was wondering if it is possible
to cut a slot in the Pentax FDP Grip to hold 4 AA batteries. I don't
have the grip so, before I buy it and try I would like to know from
you guys who have it what is the material (plastic, metal?) and if
there is space for 4 AA batteries.

I am tired to wait for the

If I insert a little piece of plastic in that place the scanner works

 Alex,

I have been using a Scan Dual II for over a year and am running it
under Windows XP. The blinking light thing is normal. I have been
using Vuescan for all this time and don't think I've ever tried
 running Minolta's software under XP.

Because VueScan is a free trial download (www.hamrick.com) you might
want to at least try it to see if it works. With the door shut, turn
it on and then start up Vuescan. Vuescan will initialize the scanner
and then be ready for use. After initialization you can open the door
 and load your film.

OK, I just tried running the Minolta software scanning utility and
twain driver from Picture Window. Both ran fine.

Are you sure that the USB driver was loaded properly? You might try
unplugging it from the computer and plugging it back in to see if the
driver loads up. If you are satisfied that everything is installed
correctly and Vuescan also fails, then I would say you have a
 defective unit.

If I can be of any other help, don't hesitate to ask.

I guess you will need to screw a polarizer larger than the front of
your lens (via a step-up ring) to avoid any vignetting. Maybe a
circular polarizer if your camera meter ask for this type of
polarizing. A big polarizer from the best makers is quite expensive.
A used Hoya might be a good choice if you are patient and like to
 shop at eBay.

Try the Tokina 28-70 F2.6-2.8 Pro II. It is very good.
If price is really a concern, go for Pentax FA 28-70 F8. You loose
one F-stop but you gain a factor of 4 in price ($400 to $100). The
Pentax is also not well build as the Tokina but the optics is good.

Re: Lens fungus questions..

2002-03-20 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello,

I was in Brazil last january and found a very old 70-300 F4.5-5.6 lens I
used to have a long time ago. I stopped using this lens because it is a
U42 and at that time I didn't have an adapter to K-mount. So, I found the lens
and it was completely full of fungus. So I gave up the lens and my brother
started playing around with it and one of the things he tried to kill the
fungus was: First he put the lens in the fridge and fungus got worse. Than he
tried the microwave and fungus completely disappeared (by eye, at least). As
I was coming back to USA I didn't have time to test if the optics is still good.
I am waiting to come back next summer and see if the lens is still ok.

28-70 2.8. Which one to buy?

2002-03-13 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello all,

I would like to by a 28-70 2.8 lens and don't know what is better. The
Pentax 28-70 2.8 is
out of question because it is too expensive for me. So I am considering the

Sigma 28-70 2.8 EX ASP
and
Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 Pro II
or
Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX

Which one is better (less distortions, sharper, etc.) I've found some
reviews on the 28-70 and
some of them say sigma 28-70 is better that Tokina and other say tokina
is better. I didn't
find any review on sigma 24-70 yet.

Suggestions, comments?

Best wishes to all,

Nope, The full CCD means that your 28-70 mm lens is still 28-70 mm. If
CCD is smaller than 35 mm frame that means your 28 mm lens is longer than
that. There is a multiplication factor to get the 35 mm equivalent focal
distance. The main disadvantage of that is, if you want a 28 mm equivalent
you probably needs a 17 mm lens.

Maybe we can have an idea. I don't know the prices but how much expensive

to take into account the inflaction of this period. Maybe the price will
be almost the same, if we consider the inflaction. If so, we can hope

Re: How the MZ-S dataimprinting works

2001-07-31 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello All,

reading from the data imprinting on MZ-S as the data is printed while the
film is rewinding means that the MZ-S has some amount of 'RAM' like memory.
Does anybody knows how much is it? Another point is, as it saves the
information in memory, why MZ-S does not have a computer interface, USB
or RS232? And, why MZ-S does not print the information while the photo
is taken? This could save the memory and a lot of electronic devices to
detect the frame position, etc,etc,etc?

Re: Is the New LX Going to Be a Digital Camera

2001-07-26 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

It is amazing how many comparisons is made from film
to digital. One question I make myself many times is
how do we define the amount of data the regular film
has? In the digital world it is simple because the
information is sampled (bits). So, we know exactly the
amount of data the ccd generates. Say a 6 Mpixel camera
that can do 24 bits of color per pixel has about
6M * 24 bits = 6M *8bytes ~ 48MB of data/photo in raw
format. And about film? how do we define it? Answer:
it is near impossible. Why? because it is not digital, it
is statistical. How many grains do we have on a
iso 100 film? It could vary from frame to frame. The
density could vary in different positions of the same
frame. I read once that a typical film has about 17M
grains/layer on it. If a film has only three color layers
with 17M grains on each, it is about 17M * 3layers ~ 51
M bits (each grain is only one bit, exposed or not). In
this case, it is about 6.3 Mbyte equivalent to digital
data only. If it is correct, digital have much more data
inside one frame. But it does not mean more quality, of course.
Because the grains are statistically spread over the
film, the result is much more realistic for our eyes. And,
I think the color rendition is much better than digital because
of dark noise, response curve, etc etc etc.

Some 1 pass medium format digital backs can do up to 20 MB (raw).

Flash to PZ1-P

2001-07-24 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello guys/girls,

I am looking for a replacement of my AF500FTZ flash for my
pentax PZ1-P. The flash was dropped and died :(

I am considering buying the new sigam EF-500 or EF-500 super.
They are cheaper than a new AF500FTZ and have about the same GN.
Does anybody use them? The main difference seemed that the
super has strobe, second curtain sync, exposure compensation.
The questions I have is:

1. Pz1-P has second curtain sync option on body, exposure
compensation on body, red-eye reduction on body, etc. If I
set one of those options on body, does the flash, even in
the case they don't have this feature, work on that mode?
If I set, say, a flash compensation of -1EV, will the flash
shoot with this configuration, even if they don't have this
feature? The same for second curtain sync and red eye.

Thanks,

Alex

SLR camera housing for underwater photography. They have a
generic house that goes up to 60 feet deep for about $150-200 @
BHPhoto. Does anybody used something like this? Is it good
enough to house my PZ-1P and a FA28-70 F4? I intend to go no
much deep (20-40 feet). So, can I trust this kind of equipment?

 Hi Alex,

Sounds like you'll be having some fun this summer -- good luck! What kind
of diving will you be doing mostly? It's been a long time (15 years?) since
I've been scuba diving, and my diving has been in Northern California,
primarily off sandy beaches and rocky coastlines rather than off of boats.
I mention this because it will influence your choice of gear. I always
needed something that could withstand hard accidental contact with sharp
rocks, sea urchin spines, dorsal spines of fish, and so forth. Thus,
flexible housings like those of Ewa Marine would not have been a good choice
as they might tear or puncture easily. Another thing to consider is this --
if you put on a pair of neoprene gloves (a must-have in Northern California
waters) and a facemask, how well will you be able to manipulate the controls
of your camera? I suspect you'd have a hard time pressing the controls and
seeing through the viewfinder of your PZ-1P in a flexible Ewa housing.
Finally, I always followed the rule of never bringing anything into the
water that I'd be upset about leaving there. I lost a small boat motor
entering through the surf off Carmel, and a weight belt (and almost a tank
and regulator) coming back in through rough surf in Fort Bragg. If an
unexpected situation comes up, how bad would you feel about losing a PZ-1P
 and an FA28-70/4? Yikes!!

I'd suggest an alternative for underwater photography. First, you might
want to take a look at the Ikelite line of camera cases. BH carries a few,
and your local dive shop may carry some as well. They're thick plexiglas
with o-ring seals, they have large external controls which are easy to
manipulate with gloved hands, and they have big square rangefinder sites on
the outside of the cases to facilitate framing your subjects while wearing a
facemask. I've still got an Ikelite case and a 110 camera in the bottom of
my dive bag -- it actually takes pretty reasonable 4 x 6 snapshots. Second,
instead of your PZ-1P, consider using a 35-mm single-use camera. Ikelite
makes a case for these disposable cameras, and one version has a diopter on
a moveable pivot at the front of the case to allow you to take close-up
 macro shots.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the diving!

Re: State of Science -- more interesting but OT stuff...

2001-04-04 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello all,

I lost the beginning of the thread but I can imagine it is about how
much
we can trust the science magazines. In my opinion the answer is: it
depends.
I am a scientist for more than 10 years and I've read many good stuff
and a
lot of junk. If you are reading popular science magazines read it
carefully
because the articles were written for general public and they don't care
a lot
if they have consistency. They are very biased and it gives the
impression
science can discover everything in the universe in a few days. Science
is a
very expensive job. To have an idea, the actual experiment I work costs
to the government 10 years of development and almost 2 billion dollars.
The
scientists have to push hard the congress and the public to justify this
cost.
This is the reason the general articles and reports to the public are
extremely
biased. We need to get the money to continue working.

BTW, if you read articles in specialized magazines (in physics, say,
Physical
review letters, physical review, nuclear physics, etc) were the
scientific
community referees the articles before publication, about 99.9% of what
you
read is very serious stuff and it is a result for years of scientific
work.
But, these magazines are very expensive and you don't find them
everywhere.
But, sometimes, these articles are very difficult to understand even for
the specialized audience because of the amount of details they have...

I read a lot popular science magazines. they are funny and can give you
general idea about other fields of scientific investigation.

If this is not the main subject, sorry.

How to use a K (NOT KA) lens in the PZ-1P

2001-03-21 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello,

I have only KA lenses and I was thinking to buy one K lens but
first I would like to know how it works on the PZ-1P. Let me explain
better. the KA lenses works wide open because the electronic contacts
tell the camera which aperture was set in the lens. I don't need to close
the diaphragm to meter the light. for K lenses, do I need to close the
diaphragm (press DOF button) while adjusting the shutter speed to have
the correct exposure?

questions about tele zooms

2001-03-13 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello,

my brother would like to buy a 70(100)-300 F4(4.5)-5.6
zoom for his Pentax (MZ-5N). He wouldn't like to spend a lot
of money (about $200-$300) and he is not a serious photographer.
The options he has are:

1. Tamrom AF 70-300 F/4-5.6 LD
2. Sigma 70-300 F/4-5.6 APO macro super
3. Sigma 70-300 F/4-5.6 DL macro
4. Pentax FA (or F) 100-300 F/4.5-5.6
5. Pentax FA 80-320 F/4.5-5.6

I have the (4) and I don't like it very much. The reviews I
read in the internet say that Tamrom is the best of the five.
Is it true?

Which one is the sharpest?

I know the pentaxes front end rotates and the sigma's don't but
what about Tamrom? does its front rotates? This question is
important to him because he likes to use polarizer.

Which one has better performance?

and, Which one has less distortions?

Thanks,

Alex

Ok, that makes sense. The digital SLR that Pentax announced is nice in
that it will at least accept our lenses, even if we have to carry around a
spare body as well. Much cheaper to get a spare body than to duplicate
all of our lenses. I imagine that Pentax will have to release a hybrid
body if the technology shifts that way, especially since they pride
themselves on their compatibility (and rightly so). My question is: would
having a hybrid body really be useful right now? If you're shooting both
film and digital in the same shoot, then you should probably have a
separate body for each so you don't have to change backs all the time. If
you shoot one or the other, but not both at the same time, then it might
 come in handy.

Re: check this out

2001-03-08 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

You "really" don't need to have a body who talks to the digital
back. Does your camera bodies talk to the film Someone can
make a digital back that works the same way as film. You set
shutter speed and aperture in the camera, click, the curtain
opens, the CCD gets some light because of the curtain, it is
triggered by the light level and it send the digital information
to a memory stick. Don't need to much to go to digital But,
if you want a LCD display to see the picture, do gamma correction,
crop the image, and send it by e-mail to you address list that is
saved hundred miles away from you That is a different point

We don't need to have electronic connections between the body and

  It is not so complicated

Not complicated, perhaps. But it doesn't do very much. If you want
to be able to see what your digital camera is doing without taking your
eye away from the viewfinder it starts getting considerably more complex.

A dedicated digital body that doesn't have to worry about mirror boxes,
electro-mechanicval shutters, film transport, and optical viewfinders will,
I assert, be cheaper than a digital back (especially since you have to take
into account the cost of the modifications to the film-based body to talk
 to the digital back).

I have taken an, admittedly, quick look at the Nikon USA

"10 segment 3D Matrix Metering, Center-Weighted Metering and
Spot Metering" so that would tend to make me think that you
shouldn't lose all metering ability with AI-S, manual lenses.

But, it does specifically state that the lens mount is "AF-D" so
that *could* mean that only AF-D lenses (or newer) can be used.
I guess it would be possible to limit an economy model autofocus
camera this way. At least I guess it's an economy model since
BH sells the body for under US$450, and the cost of the F100,
and F5, are so much greater.

I am going to have to ask a Nikon dealer friend of mine some
questions about the N80. The thought that Nikon would do that,
since they have a reputation of backwards compatibility second
only to Pentax, boggles my mind.

just a joke, don't take it personal In Brazil, we have a very nice joke
about people from Argentina. There were two guys, one brazilian and the other
from Argentina, lost in the desert and they
found a bottle. So, they opened the bottle and a genius came out. The genius
said: As you took me out of the bottle I will give you two wishes, one for
each one. The argentinian asked: I wish you to build a very high wall around
my country so the people from Argentina could stay away from the others
american, that people unpolite and without traditions. The genius said:
it is done, the wall is built. So, the brazilian asked: Is this wall
high enough that nobody can jump it? The genius said: yes, it is and
it is higher that the highest point in the planet. So, the brazilian
said: my wish is: fill inside with water

Re: OT OT OT OT OT Re: Goup Project

2001-02-09 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello

The term yankee in Brazil is related to all North American
people. This is not a official portuguese word but as many
north american people think that the brazilian capital is
buenos Aires, many brazilian people think that yankee means
north american citizen The word yankee has this mean in
Brazil since the world war II. In the war there were some
North American Military bases in the NorthEast of Brazil and
some stupid North American military person (we used to say
in Brazil that military people does not have brain) said
the "the yankees are coming to stop the nazists in the
south atlantic...". So blame yourselves for the uncorrected
terminology

Actually, I moved from Brazil to USA one year ago and I like
to live here as much as I like to live in Brazil. There are
many differences but the people is as kind as in Brazil and
the lifestyle is almost the same

  something I hate about yankees.

Is that all? Gee, some people find lots more.

But I suggest that you be a little more careful in your choice of words
when lecturing us about geographically correct terminology. Most
(North) Americans do not view themselves as Yankees despite the sloppy
usa of the term in other countries. As the Oxford English Dictionary
notes, the US usage is generally:

U.S. A nickname for a native or inhabitant of New England,
or, more widely, of the northern States generally; during
the War of Secession applied by the Confederates to the
 soldiers of the Federal army.

So some of us would view being called a Yankee as a serious insult,
folks from our Southern states in particular, since many still remember
that war with some bitterness. Non-southerners who do not view
themselves as Yankees -- most of us, as I said -- will not be insulted,
 just amused.

The (old, metal-bodied) Sigma 21-35 seems to be quite reasonable, too.

Pentax shop

Hello all,

Did you visit the new Pentax online shop in the American site of Pentax?
It is so funny. If you would like to buy caps, golf accessories and that
kind of stuff it is perfect. But, for photo equipment.

Have a nice weekend

Sigma 28-105 F2.8-4

2001-01-25 Thread Alexandre A. P. Suaide

Hello all,

what do you think about the Sigma 28-105 F2.8-4 I am thinking
to buy this lens to replace my pentax FA 28-70 F4. In the 28-70 range,
is the sigma as good as/better/worse than pentax?

Thanks for any advice,

Great I bought this camera a few months ago and it is

visiting BH and I went for the first time to the Nikon stand
and asked for a F100. I hold it, play a little with the focus
exposure, etc etc etc and I felt very happy I bought my PZ-1P
for 1/3 of the price and almost the same characteristics. What
I miss so much in this camera is a decent data back to print
exposure information between prints

congratulations for the camera
