On Saturday I set sail for France, cycling hopefully from Roscoff to Avignon and thence to a gite for a week with friends, here: http://www.tourisme-pernes.fr/fr/decouvrir-et-se-divertir/histoire-et-patrimoine-de-pernes/le-patrimoine-de-pernes/fontaine-du-cormoran I have re-jigged my website as a blog so that people can follow me, and I can post phone snaps along the way. If anyone here is interested: https://web-options.com/ When I get back I'll figure out how to use it for a portfolio of shots. Q: Why is this post entitled LX? A: Whilst there I'll become eligible for free prescriptions, free public transport in London, and 30% off rail travel I'll unsubscribe sometime tomorrow for the duration. FSF: Pentax LX
Up for sale, my Pentax LX; it's one of the versions with ASA setting up to 3200. It's in very good cosmetic shape, and was given a thorough going-over by Eric Hendrickson maybe 24 months ago. The only problem it has is the shutter release lock doesn't lock, and Eric says he can't fix it (a sign of the Apocalypse nearing???). For those that are still interested, note that it comes with the original grip and strap (the important part being the bits that hook onto the camera lugs). The viewfinder is the FA-1W model, with an extended diopter adjustment range of +1 to -3 (and I include the original tool to adjust the diopter). The focusing screen is the SC-21. Still interested? Make me an offer! Digital LX sort of.
So today I mounted the FA 20-35mm F4.0 on the K-5II, and felt the same cognitive dissonance that I always felt mounting the mostly plastic, (though really optically excellent), lens on my LX, and realized I have pretty much a digital LX, just not in the in way I always wanted one. -- I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying. -- Woody Allen -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I've shown this before. This is as close to a digital LX as I have seen. It has an electronic viewfinder, which is both good and bad. Re: FSF: LX body, Super Tak 35mm f2.0, SMC K 35mm f2 and more...
The ol' Good Cop-Bad Cop routine . . . As for whether or not it's ideally suited for portraiture, I really can't mount an argument against you. I guess what I like about it is the focal range (which seems near-ideal for portraiture) in combination with the sharpness. I have an A 28-135 that is reasonably sharp and I've managed to get some decent shots with it, but it just doesn't stack up to the F 50/1.7 -- which is a hell of a lot to live up to. But, as best I can tell, that A 35-105 comes pretty damned close -- and I really like the close-focusing. Anyway ... yes, I DO want that lens. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to pay for the blasted thing. Though, I do have a little chump change coming to me from my most recent portrait shoot. Hmm. -- Walt On 7/19/2013 2:11 PM, Zos Xavius wrote: Its not all bad. It just wouldn't be my first choice. Yeah, bokeh doesn't get any busier when you stop down. Its not all bad. It just wouldn't be my first choice. Yeah, bokeh doesn't get any busier when you stop down. Its also really pretty sharp wide open. RE: Anybody still shoot with an LX ?
I have 3 LX Bodies with most all of the really great M lens from 14m/m to 500m/m Other than 1 CLA by Pentax in Colorado for each body. I have found them to be very reliable. I imagine environmental factors such as humidity, ozone, etc could degrade the bumpers and seals quickly. One of the LX I use I ran run enough film to wear the chrome off the ends of the film support rails. This camera; after I finally lost track of multi thousands of rolls of film shot; required replacement of the worn parts in the shutter mechanism and film transport system. The camera rebuild was still cheaper than buying a used body on eBay and it works perfectly. Pentax Colorado's Pro Camera service dept really did some fine work on my equipment. I mostly shoot a Pentax 645nII now and have considered selling off the complete LX system. I stated with the Spotmatic in the 60's then on to the KX1000 and a MX camera. The LX has proven to me to be superior to the MX light meter and its lack of shutter coupling. Other than the aforementioned rubber bumper that turns to goo, you can have problems with ALL of the seals in the camera. The back door seals can turn to jelly, as can the top mirror bumpers. Re: Anybody still shoot with an LX ?
I use my LX fairly regularly nd love it. I was using it recently and thought that that Pentax should come out with a D-LX DSLR body with the real-time metering and other cool features of the LX bundled into a state of the art DSLR. Maybe they will. You never know, and you may be lucky, but you may need to have the camera services. In my case the seals and bumpers were good but the real time metering was not working. I had it repaired by Pentax many yeas ago and it still works - I actually did some very long exposure shots last summer as was very happy to see it still functioning. I use the camera pretty regularly for day to day BW film shots and it is still working great - so in my case while I had to get if CLA'd it is still working great. The LX was made for a long period of time and Pentax introduced incremental improvements, so older LX's lack some features of newer bodies. IIRC, the SO range on some older bodies topped out at 1600, but later was upped to 3200. On later bodies metering is activated by depressing the release button for the ISO control wheel in addition to half depressing the shutter button. My LX did not have this function. but Pentax added it when they fixed it up. I also think there was a minor difference in the dot pattern on the shutter blades for metering between versions. The LX is truly a fabulous body for it's vintage. The off the film metering for long exposures is great for low light work. I think that only Olympus had a similar feature in one of their bodies. Good luck! Re: Anybody still shoot with an LX ?
LX is a wonderful camera. All your digitals will feel like fat pigs in comparison. The exposure metering is masterful, and the range of viewfinder accessories is outstanding. If you are lucky, somebody else fixed the sticky mirror. When you get the camera, don't just fire off some shutter snaps. The camera won't have been exercised in about one week. Take the lens off, winde the shutter, and watch in the front as you fire. If the mirror does a little hesitation before it rises, go to Eric. I've tried to get it done cheaply only to have the problem still haunt me. I have a number of LX's and each has gotten a CLA. If you are really lucky, you might get a very late model without the problem. Regards, Bob S. Re: Anybody still shoot with an LX ?
After reading this thread, I took my LX out of the display case where it lives and fired the shutter a few times to make sure the mirror wasn't sticking after quite a few years of storage with only an occasional shutter activation. It was fine at high speeds. Then I tried some slow speeds. Nothing. A moment of panic, then I remembered that when the battery dies, you lose the slower shutter speeds. Ah, the LX. A wonderful camera that may as well have been designed and built by the Fiat car company. So, what can go wrong with an LX? Pretty much everything. Other than the aforementioned rubber bumper that turns to goo, you can have problems with ALL of the seals in the camera. The back door seals can turn to jelly, as can the top mirror bumpers. In addition to that, the aperture cam follower resistor is prone to corrosion, as is the ISO resistor. (exemplified by really flaky exposures in outomatic). In addition, the TTL flash control is beyond useless in all but the most controlled circumstances, useless to the point that although I owned three of them, it was the K1000 that I used professionally at weddings. I couldn't depend on the LX to fire the flash. All three of mine went into the shop on a bi-yearly basis with something or other wrong. The last time, I sent all three of them off in one box, hoping against hope that they would get lost in the mail and I could replace them with something else with the insurance money. Alas, it was not to be, and eventually, they were all shipped back to me. LX... got one
So... I got LX... Locally from friend of a friend, very good deal on a very good body... Thanks everyone here, who (off list) offered help! This was really helpful and really appreciated. No hard feelings that I did not got yours :) While working on getting LX, I got together a list of thing, which need to be checked. Found good checklist here and also added tips from PDML. Below is the full list, if anyone is interested... • LED’s not stable when ISO dial touched or wriggled • Mirror foam missing or deteriorating. Should be dealt with immediately before contamination and permanent damage to focusing screen occurs. • Hot shoe loose. • Mirror hesitates or does not release, normally on first one or two exposures after a period of non-use but can occur more often in severe cases. • Mirror stays in the up position in auto or manual speeds from 1/60 downwards. This fault although similar to sticking mirror fault is quite different and is known as “magnet warning” and can occur in bright lighting conditions only. • Red exposure compensation flag in viewfinder not working. • Viewfinder infinity focus inaccurate caused by worn or missing mirror rubber. • Condition of titanium foil shutter blinds. • Rapid battery drain or meter not switching off. Cause can be due to malajusted main switch or more seriously, defective electronic countdown circuit within main printed circuit board. • Rewind shaft not perpendicular and is angled slightly inwards. To check, pull the rewind knob upwards so that all of the rewind shaft is exposed. This fault is caused by impact and in many cases there could be no other visual evidence of impact although the rewind knob could also be distorted and ISO dial defective. • Operation of Multi function lever. • Finder not locking onto body due to defective lock lever on body. • Shutter release lock collar ineffective. • Shutter speeds from 1/60 downwards erratic or shutter stays open at slower speeds. This is normally due to a fault in the shutter speed control assembly situated immediately under the shutter speed dial. • Other “unusual” faults not listed are very rare and are, we find, generally the result of previous poor quality repair work carried out by other repairers. • Open the shutter in a darkened room, leave, and it will expose the film for many minutes or even hours and then shut down when the correct exposure is achieved. Test to be sure it does longer exposures - at least 15 minutes. The real time metering on mine still works - turn on the room lights and the shutter closes - it just does not work in fairly dim situations for really long exposures. Dmitry I have never had that experience with KEH. Re: Buying LX
Last I checked Pentax was still servicing the LX. However probably the best place to send if for a CLA, if you know it doesn't need any parts is Pentaxs.com. Eric does excellent work for reasonable prices. He just recently started charging return postage but that's a small price to pay for someone who's work and word you can trust. But a question though - what is the current cost of CLA and what is the good place in US to perform it (preferably NY/NJ/PA tri-state)? I guess, Pentax no longer dealing with it? Thanks! Ok, thanks for the reminder about pentaxs.com - I remember this place was mentioned on the list before, should have searched better :) Going to ask Eric about current prices...
