Thanks to all who commented. I appreciate the suggestions and opinions.
The de-saturation was an attempt to make this look like an old, faded
photograph - most didn't care for it. And the rotation got mixed
reviews...I thought it made it look more interesting than the original.

Graphics Card (redux)

2009-04-21 Thread Paul Sorenson

Bill -

After fighting the past day with the installation of a Radeon graphics
card I'm wondering if the solution to your problem is similar to mine.
Are you running one monitor or two? Does your graphics card have
multiple monitor outputs? I could only boot to VGA until I disabled the
secondary video for the Radeon card in the Device Drivers. Apparently
with some motherboards w/onboard video AGP only supports one video
output, even w/the onboard disabled. If you're only running one monitor
this might solve your problem. Just be sure your monitor is connected
to the primary output, then disable the secondary and re-boot.

This may or may not solve your problem, but it's a thought...

Film is not dead

2009-04-22 Thread Paul Sorenson

According to the web site of one local wedding shooter. He says...

*"Film or Digital? Don't be fooled - newer isn't always better.
Digital is wonderful in the studio - under controlled lighting and from
short distances - but definitely is not suitable for weddings. Digital
is finicky and requires precision exposure that is difficult to attain
under the wide variety of conditions and involved in wedding coverage.
Basically, digital wedding photographers are always adjusting their
cameras and reviewing their work when they should be taking pictures.
At this point, digital simply is too risky. Many studios have switched
to digital for one reason - to save money - whereas we don't mind paying
a little extra for the quality and consistency of film. We can provide
you with all of the "special effects" and retouches being touted by
digital wedding photographers."*

He does admit that MF is dead 'cause all his shooters use 35mm.

Food for thought...

Re: Tech-support: Wireless trailing curtain sync flash a no-go [Re: WTB and a macro flash question]

2009-04-23 Thread Paul Sorenson
You can substitute the ProMaster cord for all the Pentax do-dads. I've
used this with both the Sigma EF-500DG Super and the AF-540FGZ and it
works well. Typical cost around 60USD

Let us know what tech support at Pentax has to say please...

And the envelope please ...

---
Dear Mr. Walker,

Thank you for contacting Pentax.

Trailing curtain sync will not work with the K20D and the AF-540FGZ
off-camera in the wireless mode. The K20D manual doesn't specifically
explain this but under setting up the flash in wireless mode on page 47
of the AF-540FGZ flash manual it says you have to have the flash set to
leading curtain sync. The off-camera flash is using the built-in flash,
or another AF-540 on the hotshoe, as a trigger, but only for leading
curtain sync.

---

However, I expect that I can use the hotshoe accessory and a cable to at
least get off-camera TCS working. Sigh. Another multi-day special
order from Pentax Canada.

Thanks to everyone who helped-out, especially Doug and Charles for
taking lots of flash shots of interior walls. :-)

Re: Website revisions

Do you have enough room on your other pages (weddings, fine art, etc) to
make the thumbnails the same size as the ones on the Essay page? It's
kind of disconcerting to see the ones on your index page then bounce to
the tiny thumbs on the subsequent pages. (IMHO)

My preference is to eliminate the fade from one image to the next. If
I'm coming to your site to hire you as a photographer, I want to see
images; I don't want to sit through almost 20 seconds of transition to
see them.

I recently took delivery of a Lee filter "Designers Edition" sample
book which contains various CTO gels.

I requested it via their website & it arrived about 3-4 weeks later.

Good deal. How big are the samples?
The Rosco book that I got (also free) is a little small for my Matz 60 head.

I'll check when I get home but they're about 35-40mm x 70-75mm

I just measured them & the sample gels are 38x90mm.

Re: Netbook doubles as an imagetank

Me, too. I use an Acer w/a 120GB HD. The optical drive would be a nice
addition, but I just picked up a 320GB portable HD for about 70USD which
works well for additional storage. The Acer has two SD slots and three
USB ports so even flash drives for additional storage are viable options.

The last wedding I did I used FastStone to do some quick and dirty

only downside was no optical drive as I like to burn copies to DVD and
mail them home. I like the size of the netbooks (10" screen seems a good
compromise) but I'd prefer something with the DVD built in. That doesn't
seem to exist at the moment even although it wouldn't add that much more
size or weight. We are doing a trip to Hawaii, NY and Quebec later

I'm not looking for tonemapping. Last night I was trying to shoot the
sunset while overlooking the Santa Clara Valley. I could expose on the
sky, or on the valley, but not both. It is a perfect case of where two
shots, several stop apart, shot in the same fraction of a second would
be the perfect solution. I suppose that I could try bracketing and
post processing, but it would be very handy to have it in the camera,
and to have the two frames close enough in time, without camera
jiggle, to hand hold.

It's surprisingly effective to set the exposure between the sky and the
valley, take a single raw exposure, process it twice or thrice with
radically adjusted white balance (once for the sky and once for the
valley, and maybe also once for the setting you took it on), and mush
those two or three back together into a single image.

I haven't done this for sunsets, but it works quite well to get shadow
detail out of otherwise brightly lit scenes (leopard enclosures, train
station colonnades, etc.) so I don't see why it wouldn't work.

you will need a wireless card and its software to add to your PC. BTW,
if the install instructions tell you to run the CD software before you

I've found WinXP pro to be very easy to make work on a wireless

Vista wasn't so easy, it wants to network but is afraid of the

Re: Semi OT: 64 bit Operating Systems and PhotoShop

2010-01-20 Thread Paul Sorenson
I just upgraded to a new box w/Win7/64 bit. So far have had pretty much
no problems running 32 bit software - PSE6, ProShow Gold, BreezeBrowser,
FotoFusion, an older version of Acrobat and others. They all seem to
run more quickly, but I don't know if that's a function of a 64 bit OS
or faster hardware or both. Haven't installed LR2 yet, but that should
install as a 64 bit unless I specifically run the 32 bit install. I've
been told that one glitch w/64 bit LR is not being able to publish an
album to the web from w/in LR - a function which works from the 32 bit
version - but I can't verify that from my own experience.

I *do* make it a point to check the vendors website to see if they have
any notes on running their software on Win7/64 bit. It seems a really
critical thing is the drivers - printer drivers, etc - you need to make
sure there is a 64 bit driver available to support your printer, 'cause
a 32 bit driver won't work.

I don't know about MAC specifics, since I'm a Windows and Linux sort of guy.
But I don't like using backup software, because it usually doesn't leave
the files in a directly accessible format on the backup target. So, I
generally just do regular file copies to the backup media. I don't
typically use the GUI for tasks like this, because I've found that on most
systems the command line tools for copying files work faster, since they
don't spend any time dinking around keeping the screen up to date. So, for
me, it'd be a small shell script or something that simply copies everything
I want backed up to the external drive.

Most good backup software leaves readable copies of files on the
destination drive when copying to a standard filesystem. I tend to use
rsync-based backup strategies myself, but there's a zillion good
options on Mac, Linux or PC that don't behave as you suggest.

Tanya -

Sent this earlier, but it got lost in cyberspace. Hope it still helps.

The latest version of Lightroom is 2.6. Open LightRoom, drop down the
HELP menu and click on "Check for Updates". That will lead you through
the process of getting the latest version of LR2 and you should be able
to work with K-7 PEF's.

Or you can go here...

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

to get the latest versions of LightRoom and Camera RAW.

If you're using LightRoom to import your images into your computer, I
suggest converting them to DNG's at the same time. Then all the post
processing that you do in LightRoom is contained within the DNG file if
you want to do additional work on it in CS4, which is not the case if
you work on PEF's.

Just to deal with one small part of your post...

You will have to update Lightroom or ACR for your computer to interpret the
K7's PEF files.

In the meantime, you can shoot RAW in the DNG format instead of the PEF format
(the latter being camera model-specific).

*Disclaimer: If you have any questions or concerns about the flash sync

*"Pentax is ISO 10330:2002 compliant. That sets a 25 volt standard on

Answer #2--http://photo.net/pentax-camera-forum/00VZKf?start=20
(scroll down to an entry by Peter Zack)

"I took a couple old flashes to my local authorized Pentax repair shop.
He's independent and services all brands. He emphatically said that with
Pentax DSLR's the flash trigger circuits in the body are electronic.
This is basically a computer
 after all. Old
camera bodies from the film era used mechanical contact points.

Those old bodies could handle just about anything. On new bodies, the
electrical circuits are designed for certain tolerances and may
withstand moderate high trigger voltages for a time but will burn up
after awhile. He said that the max trigger voltage should be 30 volts
and you should *never * use a flash with more than 20 volt trigger
voltage. Pentax flashes are all very low at around 4-6 volts."

BTW, for anyone thinking of studio lights, AlienBees reports the sync
voltage for their flash units is 6V.

NOO.
Friends don't let friends use Nuance products.
Seriously, just don't give them your correct email address or phone

I bought their PDF converter a couple of years ago as a cheap

The difference in price was about $500.00.
After dealing with their buggie software, completely unhelpful help

When I started school back in the dark ages, my parents told my grade
one teacher that I was left handed and they did not want her to
"train" me to become right-handed. Apparently it wasn't uncommon for
teachers to do things like tie kids' left hands behind their backs so
they couldn't use them to write, or to actually punish children for
holding pens and pencils in their left hand. My teacher told my
parents she believed in letting children write with their preferred
hand.

I can't imagine the torment that poor lefties went through being
forced to write with their right hand. And later consequences? Who
knows?

That's really old school. They abandoned that idea some time before
the 1950s around here.

Weren't doing it in North Carolina in 1955 when I started ... not that
it matters, since I am naturally right handed anyway. They even
provided special left-hand desks for the kids who wrote that way.

Hard to imagine any school system more back-woods than Durham, NC in
the 50s.
I don't recall anyone ever forcing us to switch to right-handedness when
I started first grade in 1947, they just pretty much assumed we were all
right-handed. Our instructions were to turn the paper so the top edge
was pointed toward the upper left corner of the desk - which is why you
see so many left-handed people curling their hand over the top of their
script and essentially writing upside-down. Being the independent sort,
I turned my paper toward the upper right corner so I don't do the
upside-down thing. My penmanship still isn't worth a damn, though...

Re: Developing Chemical Disposal

2010-03-03 Thread Paul Sorenson
This is the best choice - to take all your old chemistry to a household
hazardous waste pickup point so it can be dealt with properly.

Putting them into your septic system creates two issues. The first
being any potential damage to your septic/soil absorption system and the
possibility of the chemicals killing the bacteria that are the "workmen"
of the system. The second issue has to do with the non-biodegradable
chemicals passing through the system with the effluent into the soil and
potentially contaminating the ground water. Neither of these are
beneficial occurrences.

Even prescription drugs are being found in our water supply, partly from
unused pills being dumped down the toilet and partly from passing
through our bodies when we're on medication. No need to add other
chemicals to the mix.

Mix your used developer and stop bath together so they balance out.
They definitely should not go into the septic system. Most areas have
a household hazardous waste disposal location or periodic collection
and you should be able to take it there.

Here in Raleigh/Wake County NC it used to be first Saturday of the
month, but they've recently expanded the service to six days a week
year round. Specifically lists "photographic chemicals" among the
itemss accepted.

No additional charge beyond what I already pay for
water/sewer/trash/curbside recycling.

Try Googling "Your Town/County State household hazardous waste" -
that's how I found out about the new facility in Wake County.

If they don't take fixer, I'd ask around local mini-labs. If you're
not generating great quantities of waste, you can probably find one
that will take the used fixer and add it to their own chemicals for
de-silvering.

They might be willing to take on your used developer and stop as well.

No one should be using FTP in the year 2010. FTP in inherently
unsecure because it passes password data unencrypted(!) and therefore
visible to anyone snooping anywhere between the sender and receiver.
There are known vulnerabilities in some routers which, if unpatched,
allow third parties to "eavesdrop" and grab FTP passwords.

The problem(s) with JCO's site aren't in the images. They're in other
files that have been uploaded by whoever has snooped his password.

Re: Peso: Spring Crocus

2010-03-22 Thread Paul Sorenson

Bob -

You should be able to brighten just the green leaves using this technique:

In Lightroom's Develop module open up the HSL section and click on
"Luminance". In the upper left corner of the HSL section you'll see a
circle with a dot in the center. Click on that and it will expand by
adding an up and down arrowhead to the symbol. When you move the mouse
cursor over the image it will turn into that same symbol with an
addition plus sign. Put the plus sign on the color you want to brighten
or darken.

Holding the left mouse button down and moving the cursor up will
increase the luminence and brighten just that color. Moving the cursor
down will darken it. When you think you have the adjustment to your
liking, release the mouse button. The cursor may disappear when you
depress the mouse button but that's OK - it will reappear when you
release it. Just move the mouse forward or backward until the luminance
of the selected color is right. Go back to the symbol in the upper left
of the HSL box and click on it to turn off that adjustment function. At
this point, if you decide you don't like what you did just do a Ctrl-Z
to return to your previous settings.

going by the wayside and being replaced by the sameness of the fast food
places. It's always an adventure to eat at these one of a kind
"joints" and rub elbows with the locals. Betsy's in Falmouth, *is*
still there - we had the pleasure of a meal there last August when we
were on the Cape for a wedding.

Dan -

You can find the various iterations of Camera RAW and also DNG converter
at one of these pages...

For Windows

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows

For MAC

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh

The later versions won't work with older versions of PhotoShop so you'll
have to check the documentation on the various versions until you find
one to fit with your PS version.

Your motherboard should be OK with PCI slots for the USB card. The card
should come with a disk for setup - it's a good idea to be sure your

I tend to jump back and forth between J-Album and Porta (also free).

http://stegmann.dk/mikkel/porta/

Porta doesn't look as classy as J-Album and doesn't have as much
customization, but it's fast and you can co-generate both flash, using
SimpleViewer, and html. If someone doesn't have flash enabled, they
have the option of viewing your pix in html.

Re: book maiking with BLURB - anyone try it? [Workflow note]

2008-10-01 Thread Paul Sorenson

Stan -

You may want to look at FotoFusion, by LumaPix.

http://lumapix.com/

Create your pages, including text and single or multiple images they way
you want the layout to look, with the canvas sized for the full
BookSmart page size. Save the pages in native format if you think you
may need future editing, then export the page to a jpg file. Then pull
that jpg into BookSmart using a full page template. You can create
unique layouts then that you can't get in BookSmart, with probably less
work and anxiety than the workflow you outlined below.

There are three versions of FotoFusion (and three price points). Unless
you need output larger than about 13 x 19 (inches) the mid version
(Enhanced) should work well.

-p

Stan Halpin wrote:

Some more info on working with Blurb...

I imagine you'll get better quality if you size the photos in good
photo-processing software rather than let Blurb do it for you. That is
what Blurb says, and it makes sense. So you have a bunch of 3000x2000
images on your hard drive or maybe 1500x1000 images on SmugMug. But they
need to be re-sized...

My work flow working with photos on my drive:
a. Decide on the general content of the next page or two as the
story unfolds.
b. Go into Lightroom, find the 3-8 images I'll be using next. E.g,
next I need one of the better hummingbird shots, one or two butterflys,
maybe a shot of one of the group members in the butterfly farm. [Images
previously appropriately sorted into order and rated 1-5 stars; thus,
related images are together, and I don't need to revisit the question of
which of several similar shots I should use.] Note whether vertical or
horizontal, deserve full page/full bleed, a 1/9th of the page, or
somewhere in between.
c. Go back to BookSmart. Spot a template that allows me to use my
one good vertical and a couple of moderately good horizontals on the
next page. Mutter about the fact that the template puts the vertical
near the fold, the two horizontals on the outside, and I had wanted
something the other way around. Mutter some more. Decide to live with
it. Make a note to fire off a note later to Blub asking once again for
increased flexibility in their templates, such as the ability to flip
them horizontally or vertically. Recall their forum discussion on this
issue where they basically said: "live with it." Move note about firing
off a note to Blurb into the Don Quixote file.
d. Note that the Vertical is 1113x1630 pixels and the Horizontals
are 1113x680. [You do this by mousing over the page template, a popup
window appears for three seconds with the "ideal size" information.]
e. Go back to Lightroom. Crop, sharpen etc. as required. Export to
file with a resize to 1113x1630 or 1113x680.
f. Go back to BookSmart. Import the pictures from file. [If using
Smugmug, I expect this step will take longer than reading from your
local disk.]
g. Drag-and-drop the photos into the template. Note that one
dimension or another will be cropped (since my original aspect ratio
does not equal 1113:1630). Zoom and or slide the image so that the
1113x1630 window frames an appropriate part of the image.
h. Note that the aspect ratio of the 1113x1630 template just doesn't
allow me to crop/compose the image the way I would like.
i. Find another template for the vertical shot. How about 1488x2475?
Just use it on its own and save the horizontals for another page?

j. Go back to Lightroom, re-export with new resizing parameters
k. Repeat 1-3 times for each of the other pages.

It really is not as bad as it sounds, flipping back and forth between
Lightroom and Booksmart. But if the images were on Smugmug, do you need
to pull them back down to our system to work on them? Then export back
to Smugmug after you've resized? Then import from Smugmug into
Booksmart? Unless you have a very good strong fast connection, I can see
lots of coffee break time.

On the other hand, what I am describing is a book where the pages vary
quite a bit, partially on the theory that better shots deserve more
space (but the less good shots may still be required to tell the story),
partially on the theory that some variety in formatting from page to
page makes it less like an old-time photo album with four or six
same-size photos on each page, over and over... If you have one
consistent size photo, then much of the processing/resizing can be done
in batch.

I don't have Lightroom, so I'd make adjustments in ACR, which can be

the conversion to jpegs in BBPro or FastStone. Either BBPro or JAlbum

What do you think would be the best way to convert to jpg, to make a

Lightroom is what i'm thinking would be best, then if i only need to

Yes, you can do pretty much the same thing in Elements. FotoFusion

Some more info on working with Blurb...
I imagine you'll get better quality if you size the photos in good
photo-processing software rather than let Blurb do it for you. That
is what Blurb says, and it makes sense. So you have a bunch of
3000x2000 images on your hard drive or maybe 1500x1000 images on
SmugMug. But they need to be re-sized...

My work flow working with photos on my drive:
a. Decide on the general content of the next page or two as the
story unfolds.
b. Go into Lightroom, find the 3-8 images I'll be using next.
E.g, next I need one of the better hummingbird shots, one or two
butterflys, maybe a shot of one of the group members in the
butterfly farm. [Images previously appropriately sorted into order
and rated 1-5 stars; thus, related images are together, and I don't
need to revisit the question of which of several similar shots I
should use.] Note whether vertical or horizontal, deserve full
page/full bleed, a 1/9th of the page, or somewhere in between.
c. Go back to BookSmart. Spot a template that allows me to use
my one good vertical and a couple of moderately good horizontals on
the next page. Mutter about the fact that the template puts the
vertical near the fold, the two horizontals on the outside, and I
had wanted something the other way around. Mutter some more. Decide
to live with it. Make a note to fire off a note later to Blub
asking once again for increased flexibility in their templates,
such as the ability to flip them horizontally or vertically. Recall
their forum discussion on this issue where they basically said:
"live with it." Move note about firing off a note to Blurb into the
Don Quixote file.
d. Note that the Vertical is 1113x1630 pixels and the
Horizontals are 1113x680. [You do this by mousing over the page
template, a popup window appears for three seconds with the "ideal
size" information.]
e. Go back to Lightroom. Crop, sharpen etc. as required. Export
to file with a resize to 1113x1630 or 1113x680.
f. Go back to BookSmart. Import the pictures from file. [If
using Smugmug, I expect this step will take longer than reading
from your local disk.]
g. Drag-and-drop the photos into the template. Note that one
dimension or another will be cropped (since my original aspect
ratio does not equal 1113:1630). Zoom and or slide the image so
that the 1113x1630 window frames an appropriate part of the image.
h. Note that the aspect ratio of the 1113x1630 template just
doesn't allow me to crop/compose the image the way I would like.
i. Find another template for the vertical shot. How about
1488x2475? Just use it on its own and save the horizontals for
another page?
j. Go back to Lightroom, re-export with new resizing
parameters

k. Repeat 1-3 times for each of the other pages.
It really is not as bad as it sounds, flipping back and forth
between Lightroom and Booksmart. But if the images were on Smugmug,
do you need to pull them back down to our system to work on them?
Then export back to Smugmug after you've resized? Then import from
Smugmug into Booksmart? Unless you have a very good strong fast
connection, I can see lots of coffee break time.

Re: Stolen Equipment

2008-10-03 Thread Paul Sorenson
Sorry to hear that, Joe. We have a good local store that handles a fair
amount of used equipment so I'll keep an eye out there, too.

I understand your pain...I had a similar incident about 20 years ago.
Fortunately my camera equipment was recovered, but I lost a bunch of
tools, clothing and camping equipment. They caught the perps, one of
whom was the son of a local small town police chief...I never heard if
they were ever prosecuted.

medium sized (10x10x18) camera bags I had left in the passenger's side
footwell, covered with a jacket. I know, my bad.

Here is a list with serial numbers where I have them. Others may pop up
on many of the pieces of paper filed but not unpacked since I moved here
in May.

Please let me know if you see any of this stuff on eBay, Craigslist, or
your local pawn shops. According to the police, local pawn shops will
UPS stuff they think is stolen to pawn shops elsewhere in the county (or
out of it) for a percentage of the sale price. Anyhow, I'll be looking
too, you can be sure.

Lol.

Another definition: A vegetarian refuse to eat animals he can see
without a microscope.

I saw an /awesome/ t-shirt this weekend:

Eating meat is murder.
 Yummy, Yummy murder.

If God didn't want us to ear animals, he wouldn't have made them out of
meat.

There's room in this world for all of God's creatures,

Re: Mac Noob Question

Cory -

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a Mac guy, but...are you seeing the folders on your
PC as a network drive or have you mapped it to your Mac so the OS thinks
that drive belongs to the Mac? Or maybe this isn't an issue w/Macs.
Anyway, under Windows there are some things you can't do w/a network
drive unless it's mapped to the PC you're using - could that be the
issue w/the Mac, too?

Excuse my mac noobness but I'm ever so slightly stumped here.
So I have put some pictures into my mac from my SD card. They went into
iPhoto and now they're an "event". I can look at them and everything
(about all iPhoto is good for as far as I've seen).
I can see my home PC over the network from the mac and have some shared
folders that I can see/open/play.
I'd like to copy those pictures from my macbook into the shared
"pictures" folder on my PC so I can fool with them in Elements. I can
open a finder window and navigate to the correct shared folder. I can
open another finder window to find the photos. As far as I can tell the
only way to get to them is to open iphoto though and then I can't export
the whole thing...
Must be a place I'm not looking that has the files just as files that I
can copy and paste or whatever.

Help is appreciated.

I'm particularly interested to hear your views about the colour
balance in these shots. The colour is what attracted me to the scene,
but in the unprocessed raw state it appears to have a very strong
colour cast - possibly I had the white balance wrong on the camera. I
have used LR to set them to a more neutral colour, but in doing so I'm
worried I may have lost some of the original impact. I can't trust my
own colour vision or memory.

The worst is Quicken, who forces you to upgrade at full price every 3
