Re: 5300 saga

2004-10-04 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

If there is nothing on the built in screen, I'd check the video cable
between the logic board and the screen, an extremely common cause of
 problems on a 5300/190

That sounds like useful info, now my question is... How do I tell if the
video cable is bad, and is it replaceable if it is bad? It doesn't seem
 visably damaged.

Open the screen and check the cable completely for cracks and nicks etc.,
check it is fitted correctly at both ends.

Swap in a known good screen ?

Does it do anything ay all - completely black, completely blue, feint image
on the screen ?

2004-10-04 Thread Howard R. Katz
I'm wondering if I somehow got a different version of iCab, even tho it
shows up as 2.9.8. I can get into PayPal and do everything including
paying and checking my history, but I don't get that browser not
supported message others are seeing on Gmail, on both my PPC'd 520c and
my 5300c. I'd be interested in swapping iCab versions with someone to see
what the difference is.

snip I reported this to Alexander Clauss at iCab (gave him a
gmail account to test with, too :) ), and he said we prob. wouldn't
get gmail to work with iCab until ver. 3.0. . . . .snip

I had assumed that iCab 3.0 was vapourware - it has been 'coming
soon' for as long as I can remember.

It's getting a bit of a sticking point, this lack of a functional
browser on older macs . . . . Do you think it (iCAb) will really
happen?

PowerBook 190 Power-up problems

2004-10-04 Thread Scott Howe
Hi folks-

I have a PB 190 greyscale and it's been sitting for a few months unplugged.
Trying to boot it up does nothing, but the green light turns on when I press
the power button and won't turn off until I reset the Power Manager. I know
this thing works, I had it cranking away in 8.1 not 3-4 months ago. Is this
a problem that rings a bell with you gurus out there?

Re: M1906 Battery

2004-10-04 Thread ACFX44501

Has anyone ever opened a M1906 and care to explain how it is done?

Most PB batteries are heat fused.

Blackbird batteries are complicated by having two compartments: 1)
battery proper, and 2) battery controls. The smarts are in the control
section, which is usually accessible by prying off the side, which is not
heat fused.

The usual drill for separating the remaining halves is a very thin Zona
razor saw, penetrating the housing only far enough to achieve
separation, not far enough to sever the film-type power connections.

Once re-celled, the halves may be held together by transparent packing
tape, the non-reinforced type.

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

2004-10-04 Thread maxtek
I posted almost the same question on the iMac list a month or so ago. The
answer to your question is all browser related. I downloaded probably every
conceiveable browser for my machine (iMac G3 running OS 9.2.2). After a
considerable amount of trial and error I found the best browser that works
the best with Ebay and Paypal is Mozilla 1.2.1.

http://www.mozilla.org/releases/old-releases-1.1-1.4rc3.html

(The newer version of Mozilla won't upload pics to Ebay when your selling
something).

The only problems I have found with this version is it quits for no reason
or quits when you go to the bookmark menu. This doesn't always happen but
when it does a restart of the mac usually clears it up.

If your interested I posted this question a while back on the 'fritter. You
can read it here:

Subject: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

Hello, all, I'm hoping your joint expertise can puzzle this one out.

Our 3400's have always been hideously slow - to the point of choking
- on some websites such as ebay. In particular, https seems to kill
things.

In the end I found that using iCab turning off JS made ebay bearable.

But now, all of a sudden, I can't pay for anything with PayPal. I'm
not aware of any changes that I've made , but its been a few months
since I last tried. Any one else got this problem or is it just me?

What happens is that it fails at the last 'review and confirm' screen
- I click pay and it returns me to the same screen , or back to the
start of the payment process in Ebay. Doesn't make any difference
whether I start from ebay or paypal to do this. Looks like a JS
problem? Except that its still no good even with JS on.

Now I'm not sure if its either a problem with my particular machine,
or all old macs/browsers. I have tried IE 5 and Communcator 4.7 with
the same effect.

Any ideas anyone?

9.2.1
MRJ 2.2.5
iCab 2.98

If anyone had a solution it would be great, I'm seriously considering
getting a newer machine simply so I can browse the web properly, if
this can't be fixed.

Ben (confused and cross . . .)

What you see isn't what you get. It's the apps *behavior* that
determines how much real memory it holds.

When you launch an app, space for the full preferred size is made
in the VM allocation table. And that's what you see in About This
Macintosh. In tools such a Memory Mapper, you'll see that for Moz,
more than 50% of that allocation doesn't exist in real memory yet[*]!
And after using Moz for a while, with other apps being used also
(vying for memory), that real allocation is actually reduced (unless
you go hog wild like I do - creating a dozen+ tabs in each of 6 or so
windows)!

Now let's look at iCab. It obtains a (relatively) tiny memory
allocation at the initial launch. Then it does all its work in app
system temporary memory! IOW, it grows dynamically! Does this mean
it's using less memory? Heck no! It's actually more piggy than Moz!
It just grabs the memory out of a different basket (pool).

[*] No, this doesn't mean you're swapping either! The app is given
the space in the VM map but nothing is associated with that space yet
- neither real memory nor swap space. In the case of Moz, most of
that will be paged-in directly from the shared libraries... Kindof a
way of doing a delayed/partial launch.

Just for the heck of it, I've started ripping things out. So far so
good, I guess. It hasn't made a bit of difference to Moz's memory
usage. Moz simply doesn't load the modules unless you actually use
'em. So if you stay away from the component buttons on the bottom of

some interesting crashes by hitting 'em. :)

What browser and javascript identities are you using within iCab?

rewriting the CSS and HTML/XHTML engines.

IMO, a combination of iCab and Moz works fairly well.

Open the screen and check the cable completely for cracks and nicks etc.,

Swap in a known good screen ?

I would strongly suspect the screen cable if the brightness varies but you
get no image.

Check that the screen cable matches the screen type.

I've seen a desktop Mac where the ethernet was flakey.
Worked for weeks then on a freeze/restart, nothing.
Sometimes took a dozen restarts to bring the ethernet
alive again.

Currently I have my Beige G3 Desktop connected to a hub and then to a router

I am going to get some more ethernet wire and then connect the 3400c to my

Versions of the Mac OS prior to 9.1 have dhcp lease retention
difficulties across sleeps. Then they fail to renew the lease when
the computer wakes up. So sometimes a reboot is required...

I was wondering if this might have had something to do with it.

Also please define no longer access the internet. That's a vague
term that doesn't tell us if you forgot to open the garage door or if
there's a massive pothole just beyond your driveway. :)

Are you saying your web browser gives you some error? Or are you
saying some lower level network function failed -- Unable to obtain a
valid DHCP lease? Unable to ping your local head-end (gateway) or
any point beyond? Unable to translate domain names to IP addresses?
etc

Umm I don't have detailed diagnostics on why it was unable to connect, I do
know that Eudora threw a domain name error. Also that iCab couldn't access
web pages.

Adelphia, the Cable company in my area, said that my ethernet had gone out on
the 3400c. I would like to know if someone could tell me how to find out if
this is true or not.

A hardware failure is always possible, I guess. But there are a lot
of software causes that should be investigated first.

A quick test... Plug the PowerBook into the cable modem. Power-cycle
the modem. After it has sync'd to the cable system (all lights solid
green), boot the PowerBook. Now turn on AppleTalk over that ethernet
interface. AppleTalk is very picky. If the hardware doesn't sense
(and report) all the proper continuity signals, AppleTalk will fail
to initialize.

I am using Adelphia's Cable Modem with my Beige G3 and it is working fine.

For how many computers (IP addresses) is your account authorized? If
only one, then you'll need to power-cycle the modem each time you
switch between computers.

...Cable modems are told by the cable company how many devices
(computers) to talk to. They remember those devices by tracking
their ethernet (MAC) addresses. The only way to make the modem
forget them is to power-cycle it -- physically unplug it and leave it
unpowered for at least 30 seconds.

PowerBook 190 Powerup No-Go

2004-10-04 Thread Scott Howe
Hi All-

My PowerBook 190 greyscale has been sitting unplugged for a few months now.
When I recently plugged it in and tried booting up, no go. Nothing. Except
the green power light stays on. I've re-set the Power Manager button and
that turns it off (the green light) immediately, but as soon as I try
booting again, same thing.

Has it finally had it's day or is this a common problem?

Not in my Ext folder. Do I need it (OS8.6)? What
does it do? Is it an Apple Ext?

Latest CarbonLib is 1.6, I believe.

Powerbook 520c LCD

2004-10-04 Thread Bruce
So I've read the thin white horizontal line at the halfway point of the 520c
screen is supposed to be there according to Apple. I still can't figure how
to get rid of the vertical stripes on the bottom half of the screen, any
clues would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bruce F

CarbonLib is from Apple. It's a wedge library, to allow Carbon-based
apps to run on the classic Mac OS.

If you dont have the library at all, then you must not be running any
carbonized apps (eg: Eudora, Thoth, Rosetta, etc). *shrug*

Re: M1906 Battery

2004-10-04 Thread JCT

Has anyone ever opened a M1906 and care to explain how it is done?
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
Most PB batteries are heat fused.
Blackbird batteries are complicated by having two compartments: 1)
battery proper, and 2) battery controls. The smarts are in the control
section, which is usually accessible by prying off the side, which is not
heat fused.
The usual drill for separating the remaining halves is a very thin Zona
razor saw, penetrating the housing only far enough to achieve
separation, not far enough to sever the film-type power connections.
Once re-celled, the halves may be held together by transparent packing
tape, the non-reinforced type.

Thanks ACFX44501.
Anyone know what kind of cell are used in there?
I would like to know if it will be possible to find replacement
before committing chirurgy :-)

He shouldn't need a driver but will need a script. You could likely
use one of the generic Hayes scripts.

He is also getting a PC Card Ethernet one, will this work with his 1400cs?
I think it is a Netgear PC Card.
Probably not. For this you definitely need a driver. The best bet
though is to check the manufacturer's website for a Mac driver.

Re: PowerBook 190 Powerup No-Go

2004-10-04 Thread Dale Hill
I've ended up with a PB 190 which has a cable with the female end lose. Unless I press
to oneside or the other, it will power up with the Mac sound but will shut off
immediately. I'm going to trim the area around the hookup and solder it a bit tighter
to see if that works. The female connection is definitely loose. Mine is a color 190.

Subject: PowerBook 190 Powerup No-Go
