Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio bricked via update to firmware 7790?

2009-10-08 Thread ccrome2

Mule,
Thanks for being so patient! This is definitely not the experience
we want to give our customers. We *will* resolve this problem, or
exchange your unit, (or refund -- but you don't want to do that ;-).

So, the smoking gun is this:
Jan 1 01:00:49 kernel: [ 49.507417] i2c-adapter i2c-1: ACK not
received

That means something has gone awry with the microcontroller -- it could
be a hardware or software problem. Shortly before release one of our
developers found a problem with interference in one room in his house,
that exposed a bug in the microcontroller IR receiver code. We fixed
this problem, but perhaps there is another one. The interference could
be coming from a fluorescent bulb, or some other light or RF source in
the 40kHz range.

If you would like to give it a try, I can make you a special
microcontroller firmware load to help resolve this issue.

If you are game, please give this a try:
ssh -lroot
# cd /sys/bus/i2c/devices/1-0010
# echo erase > flash
# echo program > flash

During the program stage, it will hang for about 5 seconds, but then
everything will come back to life, and your knobs should work again.

I'm sorry you're having problems. We really appreciate your patience
with this.

If you would like to give a try with new microcontroller firmware, let
me know, and I'll PM you with microcontroller update instructions.
(it's no more difficult than the instructions above for reprogramming
the microcontroller).

Sincerely,
-Caleb

Sorry, I should have been clear on that. The DAC used in Radio has a
headphone amplifier built-in. So, headphone usage is just dandy. I use
it every night that way. Low noise floor & very clean output. No need
to worry.

Another user experience gem... so to switch from a server to
squeezenetwork (mysqueezebox.com now, phew) one goes to:

Settings>Advanced>Networking>Switch to mysqueezebox.com

however to switch to a local server:

My Music>Switch library

Very intuitive!

Yet another change... pressing > on the remote has different function

Pressing "+" brings menu with these options instead.

It's also buggy/faulty. On three occasions already it stopped playing

[SlimDevices: Radio] First impressions.... not impressed

2009-10-08 Thread unclemat

I just received the radio.

First sight? Upgrading software? Huh? It's no longer called firmware? I
guess a change aimed to make it friendlier to non-geeks... evidenced
also lack of messages such as acquiring DHCP address, etc.

Then annoyance - insisted on logging to mysqueezebox.com. It's tiresome
to enter login info via knob (or remote). Maybe because I've not
upgraded my squeezecenter to the lastest version.

Biggest let down - NO BACKLIT KEYS? What where they thinking? This
thing is touted as alarm clock radio replacement. I'd like to be able to
see the keys when I turn off the light.

I am a very recent Squeezeboxer... discovered this fantastic devices
less than a month ago! And already bought three before Radio: first SB3,
then a Boom, then a used SB2. Loved them all right away. Decided to add
Radio to collection and no doubt it's my least favorite. So I am not a
case of a longtime user "resisting change".

Also I am not too fond of the LCD. Navigation looks choppy unlike the
smooth VFD on my other Squeezeboxes. I guess it has its benefits, but I
think the VFD is far more classy and elegant. The purpose and motivation
to get the Squeezebox was to get away from the computer for digital
music, and in a way the LCD puts one somewhat back into computer feel. I
guess I am minority about this. The ipod generation will love the LCD
screen.

Also the Squezeebox Server. Name change? Some marketing genius idea to
make it friender to laymen? What is however insulting is lack of an easy
upgrade path from Squeezecenter. Bit annoying, but since I am a new user
I haven't customized it much, neither installed any plugins etc. I can
imagine this being a pain for more customized installation of 7.3.x.

I am not sure I am going to keep the radio. The lack of backlit keys
might be a deal breaker. I bought the Boom new for $240 shipped, so the
radio for $200 wasn't much of a deal. I bought it for the form factor
and the option of becoming portable with the future battery pack.

Summary: not impressed.

I think this part of the instructions is wrong if you have a now
playing list with only one item in it, like a radio station in the case
of the OP. When you only have one item in now playing, there is no way
to get to the now playing "list," so you can't save it as a playlist.
IOW, pressing the knob from now playing when only one item is in the
playlist opens a context menu instead of pushing into the NP list where
the save option resides.

So does the second DAC in the Boom have optimizations for headphone
listening that are not present in the Radio? I'm curious as to how well
the Radio will work for headphone listening, without an external
headphone amp. Of course I guess I could just go home where the Radio is

The instructions you posted are for when the Radio is connected to a
local Squeezecenter (and are correct for that eventuality). However,
the process is different when you are connected to MYSB.com (as I
believe you were).

However, if this wasn't clear to you, there's obviously an issue and I
agree the docs could be improved.

To be honest, every bit of help I've ever needed I've got from these
forums - it's a really active and friendly community (IMHO obv).

This really sucks.
I believe Europe has a large backorder right now and are just waiting
on units in transit.
Unfortunately I only have visibility into the
www.logitechsqueezebox.com store.
I would encourage everyone to try and be patient as frustrating as it
is.
If anyone in Europe has a friend in the US you can order on our us site
and have them send it to you.
Not the best solution but it is an option.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio bricked via update to firmware 7790?

2009-10-08 Thread Siduhe

It sounds a bit as if, when you Radio starts up following power cord
out/in, it's having problems connecting to your network or to MYSB.com
through the internet.

If it works following a hard reset, but not a soft reset, I wonder if
it's an IP problem. Do you have a router (if so which model) which
hands out IP addresses for your network? Can you set a static ip (i.e.
a fixed IP address which the Radio will always use when it connects to
your network) using the router web management pages?

I had no trouble adding stations to my favourites, and then using those
favourites as alarm sounds, using only the radio, no server or
mysqueezebox.com involved...:

1. Go to 'Internet Radio'
2. Pick a station I'd never listened to before (one from staff picks >
best of internet radio, FWIW)
3. Click +
4. Scroll down and choose 'add to favourites'
5. Confirm addition
6. Click alarm button
7. Choose alarm I'd already set up
8. Choose 'alarm sound'
9. Choose 'favourites'
10. The newly favourited station was available to choose

That's what annoys me really - if logitech want customers to take these
things seriously then they really need to look at the documentation - a
171 page quick start guide that says (in several languages) - Set it
up...is not really useful..WHEN the "manual" is found - the instructions
are totally wrong (as I copied and pasted)- having instructions stating
clearly that the favourites/playlists should be done via the radio..when
in fact it is not..is just a total amateur way of providing detils...

I am happy with the radio but I will certainly think twice before
buying anything from logitech again if this is the standard they put
out.

Well, it is an important point as connecting the Radio to SC7.x will

I'd try this:
Stop SBS
Hard reset the Radio as I described above
Let the Radio connect to MySB (keep SBS OFF)
Try setup and FW Update from MySB

I definitely had the problem where the screen is B&W and no keys work. I
can't be sure what cleared the problem but I think waht worked for me
was restarting SBS and making sure that the playlist for the Radio was
clear so that on startup Radio would not try to start to play.

You might try rolling back to previous firmware, make sure SBS is not
trying to play anything and then do the update.

So I need it to be connected to my Pc to create favourites and
playlists? - despite the whole point of the radio being that no PC is
required? - seems a bit strange that to use the radios main features
requires a PC when the whole advert of the product is that only a wi-fi

If your Radio is connected to mysqueezebox.com, you won't see it
connected to the server on your PC. A piece of hardware can only be

I had the same problem with the Duet (I was saving playlists -- or
thought I was -- but could not find them anywhere). Then I went to the
squeeze center software on my computer (squeeze server), and indicated
where on my hard drive the playlists should be saved.

After that, I was able to save and access playlists. I think you are
missing the step of setting up a playlist directory on your computer and
telling the software (squeeze server) where it is. Then you probably
can do what you want via the radio.

Squeezecenter is the software that you install on your home server to
run hardware like the radio.

Mysqueezebox.com is a limited version of Squeezecenter which is run by
Slim Devices, so all you need is an internet connection to run the
Radio.

Which are you connected to? Will make a difference to how you set the
alarm. However both can be controlled and managed either from the radio
or via a web interface.

This is the key bit for you. Let me try and explain it. Start the
station playing that you want to save as a playlist. Then click the
center knob until you see the station listed in small writing and
underneath it an option that says "Save Playlist" and select.

If you don't see this - there is a good chance you haven't set up a
directory for Squeezecenter to save your playlists too, or Squeezecenter
doesn't have write access to that directory. Look at the Web Interface
Settings page.

2009-10-08 Thread Quoling

dsf;469304 Wrote:
> When I go to set an alarm's sound, one of the choices I get is "the

Sorry no...the point is that according to the manual you can save
different playlists and then apparently set alarms to play these
playlists..

I have got a "now playing list" - but as it says whatever is playing
"overrights" the now playing list - so if I fell asleep listening to say
one station but wanted to wake up to another - I need to save a
playlist but I can't...

Create a Now Playing List

When you select a song, Internet radio station or app and press Play,
it becomes your current Now Playing list, and the

Now Playing option appears in your home menu.

Note: When you play a song that is part of an album, the entire album
becomes your Now Playing list.

If you already have a Now Playing list, when you select and Play a new
item, your Now Playing list is replaced by the
new item.
To select an item, play it, and replace your existing Now Playing
list:

1. Navigate to and highlight a selection.
2. Press Play.
You can also add songs to Now Playing without deleting your existing
Now Playing list.

To add a selection to the end of your Now Playing list, or to add a
selection to play next in your Now Playing list:

1. Navigate to and highlight a selection.
2. Instead of pressing Play, tap the More (+) button, or press and hold
the push-button knob.
3. A pop-up context menu will give you the option to play the tune
immediately, add it to the end of your Now Playing
list, or play it next. Select Add to end or Play next.

Access your Now Playing List

When you go to Now Playing, you will see the item that is currently
playing or was most recently played, followed by a list
of all items in your Now Playing list.

To get to Now Playing:

 Select Now Playing from the home menu.
or
 If you are not at the home menu, tap the Home button twice to
get to Now Playing.

To see your complete Now Playing list:

1. From the home menu, select Now Playing. You will see currently
playing, or most recently played item.
2. Select that item to move to the next screen and see all items in
your Now Playing list.

Create a Playlist

To create a Playlist to access and retrieve later from your personal
music collection:

1. Navigate to each item you want in your list.
2. Instead of pressing Play, tap the More (+) button, or press and hold
the push-button knob.
3. A pop-up context menu will give you the option to Add the tune to
your Playlist.
4. Repeat the above steps until you have selected all of the items you
want in your Playlist.
5. From the home menu at your Squeezebox, select Now Playing.
Squeezebox Radio Feature Guide 9/18/2009
10
6. You will see the item that is currently playing or was most recently
played. Click the push-button knob again to
see all of the items in your Now Playing list.
7. Select Save Playlist.
Save and Retrieve Playlists
To create multiple retrievable playlists, create a series of Now
Playing lists and save them.

After you create a Now Playing list, you can save it, name it, and
retrieve it later from the My Music > Playlists menu
item.

This feature can be particularly useful for entertaining – Saving your
playlist before a party allows you to restore your
music if one of your guests clears it or adds music you don’t like.

To save your Now Playing list:

1. From the home menu, select Now Playing.
2. Select the most recently played item to see your entire Now Playing
list.
3. At the bottom of the list select the option to Save Playlist.
4. Enter a name for your playlist.

To retrieve a playlist:

 From the home menu, go to My Music > Playlists

Note: Playlists are saved under My Music whether they are made up of
songs from your personal music library, Internet
radio stations, apps or any combination thereof.

Note: At My Music > Playlists, you will also have access to Playlists
from iTunes and other apps.

Assuming you are talking about saving playlists in Squeezecenter - some
basic instructions for saving playlists from the web interface are
below:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=412063&highlight=playlist#post412063

However, you don't need to use playlists for the alarm. Save a radio
url as a favourite and you can also use this.

To set a favourite start playing the station, click right on a Classic
or use + on the radio I think) and select Add to Favourites.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio bricked via update to firmware 7790?

2009-10-08 Thread mule

I'm connecting to SBS7.4 local. But that's not the point anymore. The
radio just boots one time ok. Whenever i pull the power plug i get the
above mention issue: just 2 menu entries, the color scheme changes to
black&white and the keys aren't functioning anymore. I just get the
radio back to life when doing a factory restore. But this once again
works only one time. When pulling the plug again or the radio soft
resets itself after fw update, the same issues rise up again.
It looks like the radio forgets all its settings. Maybe it's a
defective battery which buffers those settings (just guessing)?!

TheMule!

[SlimDevices: Radio] Saving Playlists

2009-10-08 Thread Quoling

HOW? - I have tried all the hints in the manual, I have gone through
every menu option and no matter what I do I cannot find ANY option to
save playlists which apparently I need to do to be able to wake up to a
radio station...personally the idea of waking up to a barn fire is not
my idea of fun

Has anyone managed to do this yet? - one of the main reasons for me
shelling out 159 quid was so I could listen to different radio stations
- which although I can I cannot wake up to them

[SlimDevices: Radio] Setting the alarm for 06xx

2009-10-08 Thread dsf

So, I've just fired up my new Radio and am already in love with it (but
I knew I would). Got it online, apps installed, facebook on the go,
tested the sound quality, etc etc, all great. After all that I thought,
OK, time to set the alarm.

I can't pick a time in 06xx.

Seriously. When I scroll through the hours, as slow as I possibly can,
I can choose any value for the hour except 6. I know I can go set the
alarm on mysqueezebox.com and so on, but still! Has anyone else seen
this?

You can try a hard reset (unless this is what you tried):
Hard Reset =
- power off Radio
- press & hold “+” button
- power ON Radio
- continue holding “+” till you see "Factory Settings Restored"
- wait till Radio completely reboots on it’s own

[SlimDevices: Radio] Radio bricked via update to firmware 7790?

2009-10-08 Thread mule

Big trouble here:
Just recieved my radio and tried to set it up.
While the first go it asked to update the firmware to version 7790.
Flashing was done without any error message, but since the automatic
reboot i just get two menu entries (my music and options) and when
pressing any of the hard buttons on the radio there is no reaction at
all(besides a short beep). I also tried to use a remote from my sb3 with
the same result.

Any idea (beside sending it back to logitech)? How can i revert to an
old firmware?

It uses a single stereo DAC, therefore it does not do the subwoofer
mode. It does do the same crossover and bi-amping, which is one of the
most critical parts IMO.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] What is the alarm like?

2009-10-08 Thread gdpeck

I just ordered a radio, and I'm a little confused as to how alarms
interact between the radio and squeezebox server and mysqueezebox.com.

I need to be able to set an alarm, and have it be effective regardless
of which source the radio is connected to at alarm time. It would also
be nice if I could set the alarm anywhere (radio, SS, or MSB). For
example if I go to sleep listening to local music on squeezebox server,
but the alarm was set in the mysqueezebox.com web interface, the alarm
should still fire. Do I have to do anything special to have this happen?

I understand how the backup alarms (no connectivity) work, so don't
need any clarification there?

Also, I know this is a more general question about how alarms function,
than a specific radio question. If you're aware of posts or articles
that already exist which explain this functionality, please point me
that way. I tried a few searches, and looked at wiki.slimdevices.com,
and didn't find any information on this.

Thanks!
George

I hope that the Radio does drive squeezebox adoption in my home. It
remains to be seen. I have had two SB3s for a couple of years, and my
wife just recently started warming to them, because of the internet
radio capabilities. Honestly, besides the fact that I want to buy every
squeezebox that comes out (except the controller for some reason), the
thing that really drove this purchase is that I am looking for a lot of
flexibility in the way alarms are set. As long as they are easy to set
and we can kind of forget about them once set, I think everything will
be good.

I'm amazed that you have installed squeezeboxes (or is it squeezeboxen)
in your cars. Do you have pictures posted anywhere?

Thanks!

You can sell it to me if it happens to be red ;-)

Logitech Germany says (or better: said, in a brief moment yesterday
when the online shop actually worked) that the black radio is in stock
now. However, still no trace of red. There isn't even a hint anymore
that a red one exists, let alone an option to order or pre-order one. On
the contrary, all product images on the site showing red radios have
been replaced with black, too.

I'm afraid Logitech might be losing a customer here. Had the Radio and
the Touch been immediately available when they were "revealed", I would
have ordered both right on the spot. But by now I am already so tired of
waiting that I might go and buy something else, or get me a used Boom
from eBay and paint it red, or simply stay with iTunes and external PC
speakers all over my flat. :-(

I'm surprised that 7.4 is not mentioned anywhere in the System
Requirements for the SB Radio:

It seems to me that a natural place to put that info would be with the

Definitely 'Grrr'!

That must mean I have more radios that we have rooms on their way! :)

When I checked this morning I had confirmation of the order against the
order number I had, so that looks OK.

No other mails confirming any of the other attempts, so hopefully just
one is on the way!

Thanks for the code kevint, it appears to have worked according to my
invoice :)

That sucks! I also found it confusing having two different portals from
the same company. Hopefully logitech straightens it out soon. Good
luck!

the SBs and wants more.

To me this is the genius of the SB Radio! It's intended usage, form
factor, design familiarity, simplicity and target market will bring the
entire streaming concept to those that previously would have walked
right past such players (in the store, online, and as you
demonstratedin your own home).

Then these first time SB and streaming customers will certainly be much
more inclined to buy more SB players. They may as well have named Radio
the SB Crack! ... cuz many will certainly want more.:)

Beware - both of the orders I placed (even the one that still doesn't
register via Logitech's order tracking) appear to have shipped this
morning. Grrr.

[SlimDevices: Radio] No Radio for Australia

2009-10-08 Thread morthan

I have confirmed with Logitech Australia that they have no plans to
release the Radio (or as they call it,the 'Baby') in this market. For
what reason I have NO IDEA!

My question is does the Radio have dual voltage (120,220) or do I need
to source one directly from a 220V location?

Thanks for the link - that's helpful.

It also raises an interesting point... I hadn't realised it was being
packaged with a remote. I don't really need a remote as I already have
tons of them placed strategically around home. As the battery will
'wear', presumably it will be possible to just buy a battery without
getting another remote every time?
