If you have an interest in homebrewing, what you'll find is the "good" LED's

[RBW] Re: hunq

2010-10-09 Thread Garth
You gotta remember this is for a Fargo, it's not a road bike. You'll
likely get a better chainline using a XD2 because to use the 44 as a
double you'll have to move it out to clear the stays. In the case of
this frame, a triple gives you the most functional crankset.

If you had a 74mm 28t or 30t ring, and a 110mm 44t ring(in the
middle), and a bunch of BB's you could experiment on how long the BB
would need to be to clear the stays on an XD2. But, most don't have
such stuff laying around. If you had a friendly bike shop though that
would let you try things in the shop, that would be nice. These shops
are becoming more rare though.

MTB frames are just not designed for road cranks. The only one I've
seen is the original Stumpjumpers, where you could use a narrow of
double if you wanted to because of the very smart design. See pic
http://www.trek4fun.com/images/my_bikes/1983_stumpjumper_sport/1983_stumpjumper_sport_3.jpg

[RBW] Re: hunq

2010-10-09 Thread Michael_S
kinda hard paying almost as much for the crankset as the bike... but
hey.. life is too short not to have your bike(s) set up the way you
like. Another option is finding a used 94/58 crankset ( Raceface
Turbine, Ritchey, Specialized S Works) so you can run a 44x29 set up.

[RBW] odd request: sweater

2010-10-09 Thread b hamon
I wouldn't normally bring this to the RIV list but I feel I've exhausted my
options.

I once had a Bontrager wool-blend cardigan sweater, one of those teal-blue ones
with the olive and white trim down the sleeves, ages ago. I liked this sweater
a LOT because it had my initial on the front and fit me really well.
I loaned it to my niece and she wore it for a few months. Then, about two years
ago, I asked for it back and she kept putting me off until, many months later,
she finally admitted to me that she wore it to a restaurant in Seattle -- and
accidentally left it there. She didn't realize it until she was halfway back to
Portland.

Call that sweater gone. ..::sigh::..

Anyway, I've been looking for a replacement all over the internet and elsewhere
and have come up empty-handed.
So finally, I'm asking around.
If you know of where I might possibly find this sweater in a mens' large,
please please let me know and I will follow up, going as far as to make the
current owner an offer.

Thanks --Beth

All gone as of a few weeks ago, and they are no longer a Rivendell

Re: [RBW] Re: hunq

2010-10-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
That is what I found out the hard and expensive way after eagerly
buying a 44 for the middle and a 30 for the granny and, pushing them
finger tight onto the 113 spindle (for the XD2 crank) found they
bottomed out against the stay. I did get a Pro 5 Vis to work with a
44/30 in the middle and inner positions on an old, 60 mm BA + Fender
clearance, early '90s Diamond Back mtb, but that one had the stay
crimped a good inch or so further south than the stay on the Fargo.

I could save myself a lot of anxiety by just accepting things as they
are (Fargo + 113 Tange + XD2 scavenged from Sam Hill = works fine).

You could check with College Park Cycles near DC. They had a few

[RBW] S24O for JL

2010-10-09 Thread SFF
I'm heading out the door in a few minutes to start my 4th ever Sam
Hillborne enabled S24O. Everything is packed and ready...I hope. The
weather is just about perfect - highs in the 80's, lows in the 50's. I
expect to have the worlds best campfire tonight. TourSacks on back,
ShopSack up front and a well worn REI Half Dome Plus 2 strapped on the
Nitto.

Today also marks what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. So
tonight when the stars come out and the fire is roaring, I'm going to
make a toast to John and reflect on his life, music and art.

You can read the reviews about the light by Googling Magic Shine

One issue for me- having bagmatching tendencies- is the aesthetics of

kludgy to me. With a generator system, usually (but not always) the
installation is very tidy.

Re: [RBW] Re: hunq

2010-10-09 Thread erik jensen
That is all correct Patrick.

I got the crank once upon a time for a singlespeed (actually,
double-double). With the recent geared build, I swapped the single chainring
out for the VBC 40x24. BB is a 118 to give ample clearance, but i could get
away with a 110 if I was willing to space out to the right a bit--I had
decent clearance with a 110.5 when I was playing around a bit.

And yes, srp is high -- when I bought most of the shiny bits, I was working
in a shop. I would argue that it is worth supporting US makers like White
who are doing strong and unique work. I'm happy to support operations like
that, even at cost. That fluctuates for me, and my ability to do so is no
longer since I've quit work and went back to school.

It's an very stiff and useful crank, also a change of pace from my triple on
the atlantis, it keeps plenty of range as well. Fun stuff.

Patrick, I don't know how the stays on the Fargo are shaped, but if
they are anything like a Bombadil, or Atlantis for that matter, I
don't think a 44t ring can be used unless it's on the 3rd (outside)
position of the crank. It's meant for a mountain bike chainline and

Re: [RBW] Re: hunq

2010-10-09 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks, that is them. And proprietary rings and $340 at srp for crank,
30 and 44 -- too rich for me, I'm afraid.

I'm running my XD2 triple as a "more or less" double with the six cog
cassette (15, 17, 20, 24, 29, 34) offset to the outside on an 8 sp
freehub body; the stock 46 gives me an 89" high and the 36/34 gives me
a 31" low (actual 29" wheels), which is enough range for almost all my
dirt riding; after all, I moved to the Fargo from a 63" Monocog 29er.
Onroad I simply use the 46X20 for almost everthing (67" gear).

Still, a 44/30 would be, as the White Ind blurb says, neater.
