Re: ShopTalk: Economic life of golf balls

2007-05-19 Thread BBIRDNYPD
I have a very vague remembrance of a Golf Channel interview with a ball
manufacturer in the past year in which the representative stated surprisingly
that their studies show that most balls are lost long before their life
expectancy has been reached. I believe he stated that most balls are lost in
less
than nine holes. He stated that a ball should last more than two rounds,
unless
subjected to pavement, gravel or attempted treeicide. (That is my word.) I
am sure that also does not include those players who show up on our
television sets most Thursday thru Sundays.

I am of the belief that the USGA Board SHOULD be made up of half public lick
players and half private club members. That way the average golfer has a
say in matters.
That will happen when the lake freezes over in August.

Dave:
We met here.  I corresponded with you privately when I
first discovered this spot.
I agree that some commentators and teaching pros are
misinformed or repeating old, disproven theories.
FYI:  A year or so ago, this spot was having another math
discussion.  My son had made a remark about why math was so
important.  I sat him down at the computer and let his look at the
discussion.  I must say that his high school math knowledge is far beyond
my high school math (most of it forgotten).  He understood  some of
the knowledge being bantered about.  What impressed him was that the people
in the discussion were "just plain people" who assemble golf clubs, not teachers
or golf club designers. He did understand that some of you are college educated
and that some are working engineers in other fields.  He also said that all
of you were "old people" not students.  He also caught on that you
consulted "books" to gather some information to back-up your statements. The
experience made a great impression on him, so much so that he told a couple
of his friends.  One of which even spoke to me about this spot and wanted
to take a peek.  (He is not a golfer, but my son is.)
So you can all take a bow for accomplishing something else
besides impressing all of us math underachievers.

2004-02-02 Thread BBIRDNYPD

I have played the Black course for many years.  I
play it about three or four times a year.
The USGA and New York State did a wonderful job in
rejuvenating it. The sand traps are now on a level with any private
course.  The fairways and irrigation's system are super.  The greens
are in wonderful condition.  You can only walk the course.

The state is committed to keeping it on a World Class
level.
I never play weekend golf but still the waiting is long
and I hate to wait.  So during the week, I try and get on the telephone
reservation list or I do not play there.
It is as tough as they say. For those who are not
fortunate enough to play private courses, it is a chance to test yourself
against the pros.  The greens are not quite as fast as they were at the
Open but it gives you a feel.
We always knew we had a gem on Long Island, now the world
knows.
I have also played out east at the Shinicock Hills, but
that is another story.

Re: ShopTalk: Golf Digest Higher loft articles

2003-10-14 Thread BBIRDNYPD

I am a believer.  My old driver was a 260cc, 9.5 degree lofted driver with a regular flex Maltby graphite shaft, 44 inches in length.  (I have been swinging that length for twenty plus years.)
I switched to a Wishon 915, 360cc Driver with a 10* loft.  Same regular flex (only a few frequency points difference from the old driver). Both drivers are the same swingweight.  I do not remember the total weight figures.
Anyways, I have picked up about 12 to 15 yards in length.  I am now over 270.
My swing speed is between 93 and 97 MPH.
P.S.  There is one nasty sand trap that I visited frequently.  I always seemed to fall into it.  It is elevated from the tee box.  My old distance should have carried to trap, but due to the elevation, I seemed to find myself down in the bottom. Now, I fly over it, and have not visited it since I switched.  Yes, the distance is a partial factor, but the increased altitude of my shot allows the shot to soar over the top as it carries the dog leg and sets up an easy lofted iron to the green.

I have sold a few of Tom's 915's.
It is the only club that I have ever sold just from letting people hit it while playing with me.
It has a good quality appearance and the sound is great.  I have the 420cc and the 360cc models, but have only sold the 360 models.  But that maybe due to the fact that most of my clients have 320 cc clubs or less now.
Good Luck,

I have both the 360 and the 420 models.
People that have hit them, like them.  I have sold two just by letting people use mine on the course.
They like the sound it makes and they like the accuracy.
I have not sold any 420 models as the people that tried it said it appeared to large for them.  All these people swing less than 320 models now.
As for me. I love the 360 model.  I get good distance and I am hitting more fairways.
You are correct in that the trampoline effect is really for the professionals.
I also get rave revues for the appearance of the 915.

I have a Nike driver coming in.  The customer crushed his new driver (less than 5 weeks old) attempting to put on a different grip.  Ah, amateurs!
It is a stiff shaft, according to him.
What is a good match?
I am hoping he has left the shaft in the club, so I can get the length measurements.
Thanks in advance.

Rich:
I am assuming that your swing speed indicates a stiff flex?
My potential customer has swing speeds that call for a "R" flex.  But he has heard that a stiffer flexed club would give him more accuracy.  True as this is, I could not give him an estimate as to how much distance he could expect to lose, thus the question.
Like you I have an oddity.  I have a 320 gram, 9.5* lofted, Titanium Driver and a low profile 12*, with matching shafts.  At least once a round I can pound that 3 wood 260 yards off the tee.  My drivers average is probably about that, with a 280 once in a while.

I have no idea.  He strutted around the club house and the restaurant  while on the course he held loud conversations with other officials.  He did not seem to be in charge.  But I never did learn what his official duties were.  All I heard him do was complain about the cart, the food and if the billing arrangements had been taken care of.  I ran in to him at least three times on the course and twice in the club house/restaurant area.  Each time he was mouthing off.  I do not want to imply that he was drunk or anything like that.  He was not.  I never saw him at anytime drink anything but water.   He was just full of himself.

2003-03-17 Thread BBIRDNYPD
The only golfers the USGA are concerned with are the "Country Club" players.  We, of the public course domain, are just caddies on their days off.
I have witnessed two separate conversations, at two different courses, with different officials, and the only thing they were concerned about was what was on the menu at the restaurant and had the arrangements been made for the expense account to pay for the food. These conversations took place on the course not while they were chowing down.
At one of these events, there was one particular official who was so pompous, a lady spectator, asked who he was and why did he think he was so important.  She overheard him complaining about being issued a newer cart.  All the while, he had his feet draped over the front of the cart and was dropping cigar ashes on the floor of the cart.
I do not know what his duties were at this event, but never once, did I see him get out of the cart or to take up a position where he could even look at any of the golfers. This is only notable in that he had showed no interest in the participants and the quality of the golf being played.

Thank You for all the replies.  I the warning bell was saying something about the glue needing elasticity and that the epoxy would not have this.
As for my memory, I too, did wood head and wooden shaft work in the past.  I replaced a few hickory shafts and assembled quite a few wooden headed clubs which I finished myself. I also had a little specialty, I took raw wooden putter heads, drilled out a round divot into the top of the head and glued a miniature shield into it.  Then I would put a clear epoxy fill on top of the shield.  Then I would stain and finish the head.  A hickory shaft and a leather wrap grip would finish the job.  I made over one hundred of them before I became hard to get unfinished heads and hickory shafts.  It made for nice retirement gifts.
Thanks again for the replies.  Now to the work.

Are there properties of furniture glue that make it more suitable for the task then our club assembly epoxy?  Thanks in advance?

Why not solve two problems at once.  Use your used golf score pencils to apply epoxy inside the hosels.  Then toss the pencil away.  Gets the job done and then the pencil is history.  No cleaning.  Of course, if you are that busy and don't play that much, then wipe the pencil off and use it again.
