It's more than a noble thought. The tracking bug for bad sniffing --
bug #334967 -- depends on 208 specific bug reports about individual
cases of bad sniffing. 37 of of those specific bug reports have been
closed, indicating that Web masters do indeed learn that "Gecko is Gecko".

18 of the specific bug reports were either duplicates, invalid, or
"Works for Me". That means there are 190 valid specific bug reports,
19% of which were fixed. If even a slight effort were made to
communicate proper sniffing -- and the possibility that sniffing is not
needed at all -- many more of the valid bug reports would also be fixed.

I'm not convinced that the changes in presenting the UA string (based on
bug #572650?) will really solve the problems of invalid sniffing. If
"Firefox" is always appended to the UA string, it is more likely that
Web masters will conclude SeaMonkey is no longer in use.

Here is what I use on Verizon FiOS for SMTP:

Server Name: outgoing.verizon.net
Port: 587
User Name: Joe.example (note: not joe.exam...@verizon.net)
Secure Authentication: No
Connection Security: None

On the Connection Security = None: that is the only way I can get it to
work for Verizon. Everybody else wants you to select SSL/TSL but Verizon
wants "None"

Thanks, but I don't have a Verizon account. I'm just temporarily
piggybacking on my host's connection while I'm living in his house.

Still, I'll try setting up another SMTP server as if I did and see if
that works.

Set up a new SMTP account by going to Edit/Mail&Newsgroup Account
Settings/Outgoing Server (SMTP)/Add

Call it "Alias" and set it as the above, ie:

Description: Alias
Server Name: outgoing.verizon.net
Port: 587
User Name: Joe.example (note: not joe.exam...@verizon.net)
Secure Authentication: No
Connection Security: None

Now set up a new account using Edit/Mail&Newsgroup Account Settings/Add
Account

Call the account Alias and fill in what you want (name & e-mail address
- must be a valid e-mail address) and go down to the 'Outgoing server'
box and select Alias.

This should work with Verizon FIOS.

I forgot the MOST important thing. In the new Outgoing Server, 'Alias',
the User name MUST be your friends FIOS user name - NOT YOUR name.

Each outgoing server (smtp) has its own settings.
Sometimes you can access an outgoing server from another isp,
but that is rare.

In SM 1xxx, edit/mail&newgroup acct settings/outgoing server (smtp)/
edit or add as necessary.
Fill in the blanks with the appropriate data.
You can have multiple smtp's but will have to set for the one that
you currently use.

go to black-on-white. There are other useful bits as well, of course.
http://prefbar.mozdev.org/

As far as the font boldness goes, try pressing Control-Plus once or
twice, enlarge and bold. Control-Minus reduces, Control-Zero returns to
your default chosen size. Note on the View menu that you can zoom the
entire page, or just the text. I prefer just the text.

Re: SMTP problem -- who's at fault?

2010-08-28 Thread Beverly Howard
>> I keep getting a message saying a connection cannot be made to the

most likely a configuration problem...

each internet connection limits open smtp server access to _only_ those
connected via the service that provides the server... i.e. using a RR
server, their smtp server can't be used if connected via any other isp
provider such as verizon and probably any other location than your home
location.

The normal solution nowadays is to use smtp authentication using your
account's mail id and password. A quick and easy fix is to use the
webmail interface provided by your isp until you get it sorted out.

fwiw, Sending and receiving email are two completely separate
operations... the only thing that connects them is your email client,
so, pop3" working" has zero bearing on smtp problems.

Hope that this information is of value.

Yeah, one should be able to handle .eml (message/rfc822) attachments
pretty much like "native" messages - copy to folder, reply to or forward
them:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11013
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=193281
etc.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=269826

In the mean time one could install the ImportExportTools extension:

http://xsidebar.mozdev.org/modifiedmailnews.html#importexporttools

Save the .eml attachment to disk and import it as a normal message into
some folder, then do what you wanna do with it.

Most interestingwhy not ADD to SeaMonkey E-Mail the ability to handle eml
messages ?

Would it be that difficult to do add to the system ?

Why have an extension if many people will use the ap ?

DoctorBill

I have experimented with this problem in SM and the only reliable and
editable solution I've found is to use "File-Save As-File" to save the
note with images as a *.eml (type: mail file) to my Desktop. I then open
it in Outlook Express (or WinMail) and I can now edit it to my heart's
content (strip out headers, delete Blockquotes (using Source tab) and
reformat it to my liking (using Edit tab). Then I Send it from OE as a
completely cleaned-up original message.

EML (Encapsulated MaiL) is OE's native file format and it will reliably
text-encode all the images and include them. TB and SM know that
embedded images are in their mailboxes so you can always see them on
your computer but they don't encode them and mail them out as a
"multi-part message in MIME format." (The latter was created by
Microsoft.) Images that have links to other servers or if they're
attachments will be sent out properly by TB and OE. You can also save
each incoming message image separately (using the Image Zoom add-on,
http://xsidebar.mozdev.org/modifiedmisc.html#imagezoom ) and use "Insert
Image" to embed it in SM and TB. It will then be sent out as an EML
message.

SM and TB seem to read, save and sometimes create EML messages but
forwarding an incoming message with embedded images is problematic from
my experience. Unfortunately, the workarounds are unwieldy. (If you want
a seamless process, using OE is the answer.)

I have tried "Reply" with these eml messages and if you erase the address of the
replied to person(s), you can put in new addresses.

However - this leaves the entire eml "in place" and editable (is that a word?).

Works kind-a-like forwarding, but doesn't put the eml as an attachment - it
allows
one to edit the message.
EML messages usually have many boxes around them - not all are removable.

'tworketh.!

Uninstall v.1 after upgrade?

2010-08-28 Thread Paul B. Gallagher
Just upgraded from v. 1.1.16 to 2.0.6, and it seemed to go smoothly --
most everything was seamlessly imported, even down to my global Windows
shortcut that launches the program.

After poking around the program and reading the release notes, I have
two questions:

1) Is it safe to uninstall v. 1.1.16 through the uninstall link at Set
Program Access and Defaults?

2) How can I show my sigs at the bottom of the composition window?

Re: edit with

2010-08-28 Thread Beverly Howard

thanks... the key is appreciated.

To clarify since the need is a little different, the mozilla composer
has been my only html editor since the early (netscape 1.x?) days and
it's the ideal "editor" for html files, so, it's always set as the edit
file association for all html files.

With every project there always seems to be at least a couple of needs
to switch to html source edit in order to tweak or do mass changes.

In earlier composer versions there was a menu option to "Open in
external editor" which was very convenient.

With textpad (and I assume wordpad) I can leave the file explorer window
open after opening the file for "edit" in composer, then rightclick the
same file and selecting "textpad" to achieve this, but it's pretty
kludgy compared to the menu option.

Thanks for the input,
Beverly Howard

You can do this with any folder, but I generally do it on My Computer.

1. Open the folder. On the menu bar, select [Tools> Folder Options].

2. On the Folder Opetions window, select the File Types tab. (It may
take a few seconds for the tab to initialize.)

3. Under "Registered file types", scroll down to HTM. Select the
Advanced button near the bottom of the window.

OR THE "CHANGE" BUTTON IN WINDOWS XP.

4.a. If "edit" appears in the Actions area, select it and then select
the Edit button on the right. In the "Editing action for type" window,
leave "edit" as the Action; put the Windows path to Composer (using \
instead of /) in the "Application used to perform action" area.

4.b. If "edit" does not appear in the Actions area, select the New
button on the right. In the New Action window, type "edit" (without
quotes) under Action and the Windows path to Composer (using \ instead
of /) in the "Application used to perform action" area.

5. Exit by selecting the OK buttons.

Is there a command-line option to SeaMonkey to have it launch
the Composer application? ( e.g. -m for mail...)

Be careful with the Change button. It changes the application that
OPENS the file, not the application that EDITS the file. You normally
want a browser to open HTM and HTML files.

Yes: in this case I had to tell SeaMonkey suite to use composer by adding the "-edit"
flag and "%1" to use the file I selected.
