May have had it on an alternate channel, actually, on whichever providers are

By “alternate channel,” I meant an alternate Root Sports channel — e.g., on
DirecTV, Root Sports Pittsburgh is channel 659, but they can activate 659-1 as
an alternate if necessary.

The issue discussed in the article is not that they'll have trouble filling the
time, the issue is that they depend on the commercial breaks for costume
changes and set moves.

I suspect they'll just produce more pre-taped bits than they already do.

You don't think "Match Game" should be hosted by a lech who dabbles in acting?

Accounts from people who have been to "Pyramid" tapings seem to be that you
shouldn't worry about how they handled the format, or about how Michael Strahan

I've already seen Wil Wheaton on Twitter campaigning to get a slot on the
panel. But presumably it will be taped in New York, and the celebrities will be
mostly New York-based and/or friends of Alec (thus, I think some of your names

No, they all do “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the 7th-inning stretch,
but there are a couple of caveats:

1. MLB mandates “God Bless America” be played on Sundays, since 2002. I think
every team does it immediately preceding “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” except
the Cubs (who do it before the game). Some teams have played it at every game,
although I’m not sure if any team is still doing so.

2. Some teams have their own traditional songs that are played in addition to
“Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” such as the Orioles playing “Thank God I’m a
Country Boy” and the Blue Jays playing some ridiculous Health Canada-sponsored
song about exercise.

Source: I’ve been to games at 25 of the 30 current MLB stadiums.

Since I watch Tampa Bay Rays games via MLB Extra Innings, I may well be the

She was actually the backup "sideline reporter" for Rays games -- their primary

I assume Fox Sports Florida/Fox Sports Sun will not have a hard time finding

That isn’t a factor in the differences in the way CBS and Fox handle Sunday
night football overruns. There are 16 CBS affiliates that are
owned-and-operated, and 17 Fox affiliates that are O&Os.

Since there’s a cap on the amount of TV stations any one entity can own
(basically, they can only reach 39% of the country), one would expect the
networks to own about the same number of stations.

Because I had a job interview at the ABC affiliate in Tampa on the day after
Memorial Day 1998, I remember that the Indianapolis 500 was rescheduled to
Tuesday that year, and the race did air on ABC, pre-empting the soaps --
actually, pushing them back a day. (As I was in the lobby waiting for my

You will have to purchase an antenna separately.

My only experience is with the antenna I have hooked up to my computer’s TV
tuner device — just a plain old set of rabbit ears. It works great because it’s
next to a window that faces the mountain where most of the L.A. TV stations
have their transmitters (about 20 miles away).

This site seems to be a good source for antenna info: http://antennaweb.org

Your mileage may vary -- in July, I did a road trip in which I spent a week

You had the right idea — that WAS the rule, but they’ve eliminated it now that
they decided to hold the general online test in October rather than January,
when they’ve had it every year since they instituted the online test. I’m
wondering if this will be a permanent move in when they hold the test, to take
advantage of the “excitement” over the new season every September.

I’ve taken the online test every year I’ve been able, and am pretty sure I’ve
scored over 40 each time, but haven’t been invited to an in-person audition
since 2010. My understanding is that the invitations are randomly selected from
those who passed the test, but a small part of me can’t help but wonder if
they’re doing some advance screening, and they’ve decided that my personality
is so repellent that there’s no way they’ll ever put me on the show. (I did
four in-person auditions in the pre-online test era, and two more afterwards, I
think in 2008 and 2010.)

No, there’s no place where you notify them of your choice. You can just log in
and take the test on any of the three dates/times they’re giving it: Tuesday,
October 4 at 8:00 Eastern; Wednesday, October 5 at 8:00 Central; Thursday,
October 6 at 8:00 Pacific. (Even though I’m in the Pacific time zone, I’ve
always taken the “Central” test because 6:00 works better with my schedule.)

In fact, yesterday, as Charter announced the retirement of the Time Warner
Cable brand in southern California, they indicated that they're going to be
intransigent on the Dodgers channel, a local executive saying, "We would love
to sell the channel to others, but no one has bought it -- and we are not
giving it away. So if consumers want the Dodger channel, they'll need to
subscribe to us to get it."

Yes, I took the test Tuesday night, and think I got about 40 — supposedly, 35

I’ve passed the test every year, but haven’t gotten invited to an audition

The on-field officials don’t specifically “know” there’s a promo running.
There’s an official who stands on the sidelines who’s in communication with the
control truck, and he’s the person the referee looks at for signals on whether
the network is in a commercial break or not — he wears bright orange gloves to
make him and his signals easier to spot on the sidelines; the usual signal for
“we’re in commercial” is that he puts one arm across his chest.

Matt Vasgersian was the play-by-play announcer on the Cubs-Giants series.

I spent all year watching games on one of Fox's RSNs -- the Tampa Bay Rays
broadcasts on Fox Sports Sun -- and felt they actually did a better job
throughout the season than Fox is doing on these playoff games. A few
observations:

1. Rays broadcasts had the FoxTrax pitch map on-screen for every pitch, and I
kind of grew to depend on it.

2. The between-inning breaks are longer in the postseason than in the regular
season, and even still, Fox has been overstuffing them -- even having to
sometimes dump out of a commercial early so as not to miss the first pitch of
an inning. (This could be the fault of the umpires jumping the gun on the
in-stadium countdown clock, but I never saw this issue during the regular
season with the commercial load they had during the Rays games.)

3. I think Harold Reynolds is the new Tim McCarver -- for the most part, I
didn't find his comments particularly interesting or insightful (there were a
number of times he just restated pretty much what Kenny Albert had just said),
and he had issues such as mixing up Justin Turner of the Dodgers with Trea
Turner of the Nationals a few times.

One thing I've been thinking about while watching the baseball playoffs is the
fact that there used to be no TV advertising for hard liquor -- not due to FTC
or other national government regulations, but because the
manufacturers/distributors had agreed to it through their industry association.
That voluntary ban ended 20 years ago:
http://www.nytimes.com/1996/11/08/business/liquor-industry-ends-its-ad-ban-in-broadcasting.html

(The broadcast networks still don't accept hard liquor ads -- although some of
their affiliates do -- but the baseball playoffs, being on cable up until the
World Series, are rife with liquor commercials, mostly bourbon.)

Do you not see small “Skip Ad” text (and a countdown timer) in the extreme

No, you don't have that issue (the networks and the affiliates could easily

A few years ago, I started noticing baseball announcers saying "hit batsman"
instead of "hit batter." Turns out the phrase "hit batsman" is actually used a
few times in the official MLB rules -- although "hit batter" is also used,

Yes, the dates for each postseason series were already set, regardless of how
many games any previous series lasted. World Series Game 7 was always set for
November 2 "if necessary."

Seems like in previous years, during the early portion of the World Series, Fox
has run promos for the regular prime-time shows that would air if the later
games were not played, with "if no baseball" graphic on screen during the
promos. I don't remember seeing any of that this year.

My rule is that I’ll follow any nonstandard capitalization and/or punctuation
rules that a company wants to use for their name IF they’re using them on the
paychecks that I’m regularly receiving. Hence, when I worked for Yahoo from
2006 to 2012, I was happy to write the company name as Yahoo!, with an
exclamation point. (When I worked for them again from 2013 until this April,
they’d changed the corporate communication guidelines and decided that the
exclamation point should no longer be used in plain text.)

So I don’t know why you’re giving them the courtesy of following their
ridiculous lowercasing.

It's still on KNBC in Los Angeles. Assuming the list on their website is
reasonably up to date, it's only on a couple of Fox owned stations (I see
WFLD/Chicago and WJBK/Detroit): http://extratv.com/page/when-its-on/

A little searching shows that WMAQ was the only NBC-owned station it left, a
victim of a local news expansion in a time zone where there's effectively an
hour less available for syndicated programming than there is elsewhere.

This was the case for the Division Series and Championship Series games in all
ballparks as well, including any static ads behind home plate or in/on the
dugouts. (The regular outfield wall and scoreboard ads stayed.) There's a strip
behind home plate at Progressive Field that normally reads "Progressive Field

covering up every ".com" with "Field."

Quite a contrast from the Rays games I watched on a Fox regional network all
during the regular season, where this was never an issue, even with a shorter
between-innings clock.

Incidentally, this year I went to a couple of International League minor-league
games, in which a pitch clock is being used, and I would be very happy to see
that implemented in MLB.

Technically, DC is an owned-and-operated station, not an affiliate — they’d be
the least likely to engage in their own censorship.

I’d be interested to know if KSL in Sat Lake City did any local censorship of
this episode. They didn’t even carry “SNL” for years (also eschewing NBC
prime-time shows with content they found objectionable, such as “Hannibal"),
and they would have had a full hour to review the content in advance of the
Mountain time zone broadcast.

The awards that have been given so far, the ones referred to in the article,
are not the major awards that are given during the “telecast” portion of the
ceremony.

It’s akin to the “scientific and technical” Emmys (which are given out at a
separate ceremony on a different day, whereas the Grammys give everything out
on the same day).

I wouldn't read too much into this airport name change -- the issue is not that

I know they've taped a couple of pilots over the past few months that appear to
be for potential 11:30 shows -- one was a talk show with Jim Jefferies, and I
believe one was sports-themed.

(That said, it previously took Comedy Central a while to settle on a midnight
show. Circa 2012, I attended two pilots for potential midnight shows -- one was
a pop-culture roundtable-discussion show, which would have aired live, hosted
by Paul F. Tompkins; the other was basically "Attack of the Show," hosted by
Chris Hardwick.)

They've had plenty of prime-time anthology specials, too, and the sky hasn't

Being on the West Coast and having satellite, I get TV-MA programming on basic
cable channels starting at 7:00 P.M. (occasionally earlier) -- so it seems
fairly quaint to be worrying about the TV-14 "SNL" airing at 8:30 instead of

I am 99% certain they're referring to the fact that the BROADCAST will be live
to all time zones, as opposed to the entire thing being delayed one hour for
the Mountain time zone and three hours for the Pacific time zone, as has been
the tradition.

But they're not saying that the CONTENTS of the broadcast will be 100% live. I
can't believe they wouldn't, for example, delay the women's figure skating
final as much as they need to in order to get it into the prime-time broadcast
-- and get all their commercials in.

Re: [TV orNotTV] Thursday's Colbert

2017-04-07 Thread Jim Ellwanger

One thing that was affected by the situation in Syria was Thursday’s originally
scheduled episode of “Powerless,” which dealt with the main characters being
stuck in the office due to a gas attack. I happened to pay particular attention
to this because Thursday morning, the L.A. Times ran this evergreen-ish article
about “Powerless” that described scenes from the gas-attack episode:

I watched the first episode with friends, and we agreed that our biggest
problem was that they were rushing the line readings of the riffs, i.e.,
talking too fast in the theater.

I’ve since watched up to episode 6, and either they start doing a better job on
the timing, or I’ve gotten used to it.

Actually, he said that his actual “Daily Show” anniversary is June 2nd, but
since the “Late Show” is going to be dark THAT week, he’s doing this
anniversary show early. “Late Show” is scheduled to have new episodes all next

Sounds like there might be some "energy saver" setting that's been triggered
somehow. If you can't find it through the box's on-screen menus, you may have
to figure out how to get to the "service menu" (Google for that phrase and the
box's model number).

I always felt like there should have been more of a "butterfly effect"
situation resulting from the changes they end up making (beginning with the
pilot, and the increased number of survivors of the Hindenburg), but I know
that can be hard to pull off in a weekly TV series, where it gets confusing for
the viewers if they come back to 2016 and everything looks different than it
did last week.

At the end of his show last night, Conan paid tribute to Marsh McCall, an
original member of the "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" writing staff, who
passed away Monday morning. (He went from Conan's show into sitcoms, including
"Just Shoot Me!", and he'd most recently been working on "Fuller House.")

Yes -- if they feel it necessary to do a mandatory special report, they're not
going to hold it for a time when no affiliate is doing local news.

And yes -- they're usually able to give the affiliates a couple minutes'
warning to allow them to elegantly transition from the local broadcast into the
network special report (I can't find any examples of this on YouTube, but
perhaps I'm not searching for the right keywords).

Pretty sure that the captions you're seeing during games is not automatically
computer-generated, but the work of the various stenocaptioners (i.e., court
reporters) that are employed by the various baseball broadcast outlets. As I
recall from my captioning days, the best stenocaptioners work with 99.7%
accuracy, which means they get 3 words out of 1,000 wrong -- which means you'll
see an error at least every couple minutes.

I think I've still got a free preview going for MLB.tv -- I'll try to remember
to turn on the captions today and confirm that the errors are consistent with
the kind of errors that stenocaptioners make.

Yeah, these three screenshots in the Imgur gallery are from the pregame
portions of the Rays (Fox Sports Sun) and Rangers (Fox Sports Southwest)
broadcasts, and they all appear to be stenocaptioner typos: "called" instead of
"Cobb," "wand" instead of "blonde," "buys" instead of "base." They're
mis-strokes on their steno machine, which cause them to be "translated" as the
wrong word.

Perhaps a more piquant comparison -- and the reason I can't believe Daniel felt

I went a couple years ago, and thought it was very substantial and interesting.
I would definitely recommend it to the members of this list.

I think a big issue is that its admission charge is comparable to that charged
by other big-city museums, but — especially given its location on Pennsylvania
Avenue just north of the Mall — it’s competing for visitors with the
free-admission Smithsonian museums.

I see, from 506sports.com’s maps, that the primary game they were showing in
Reno was 49ers-Seahawks. Did they actually switch to Broncos-Cowboys once that
one was over, or did they go to “The O.T.,” the studio show? I assume the
latter would have had frequent live look-ins on Broncos-Cowboys, but would have
allowed them to put on “The Orville” before the game was over.

Okay, after watching the Emmys, I got to my DVR recording of “The Orville,”
could actually see what happened, and have an answer: due to NFL rules, Fox
had to cut away from the game once the Sunday night game started, at least in
markets that were getting Broncos-Cowboys as “bonus coverage.”

It wasn’t until kickoff of the Sunday night game that Fox had to cut away
(i.e., about 5:38). I’m positive that Fox got to stay with the game until its
conclusion in Dallas and Denver. I’m also positive that they had to cut away in
markets that had aired the Rams-Redskins or 49ers-Seahawks. What I’m not sure
about is the many markets besides Dallas and Denver that aired Broncos-Cowboys
from the beginning, i.e., everything in red on this map...

Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Tony Romo to be CBS sports analyst

2017-09-29 Thread Jim Ellwanger
I watched some of the Thursday night game on Amazon Prime with the "UK English"
audio feed, which had soccer announcers Ross Dyer and Tommy Smyth on the call
of the game. It had been advertised that it was specifically geared to
international viewers who were not necessarily familiar with American football,
although they really didn't do much explaining of the rules while I was
watching (portions of the 1st and 2nd quarters). It was fun to hear some
different voices and phrasings, but for next Thursday's game when "my" team is
involved, I'll probably watch with the regular announcers.

They meant the NFL Network studios, which are in Culver City.

As previously alluded to in this thread, the L.A. CBS affiliate is at the "CBS
Radford" studios in the Valley (the Studio City neighborhood), but used to be
in a building called Columbia Square in Hollywood, which dated back to the

They’ve been handling things differently in Los Angeles this season than they
normally do in New York and San Francisco, scheduling the Rams and Chargers to
both be on the non-doubleheader network four times — this coming Sunday is the
fourth — and in each of those weeks, also allowing two games to appear on the
doubleheader network. In New York and San Francisco, they schedule the teams to
play at different times on different networks (when they both have Sunday day
games), so those markets get three games at most, two involving the local teams.

The speculation is that the NFL wanted to continue to get the TV ratings that
come with being able to air the “best” games of the week in Los Angeles, rather
than causing the fans to always be “stuck” with the Rams and Chargers.

Right -- when the games are on two different networks, there's no issue with
them overlapping. But when they're on the same network -- and especially when
it's a non-doubleheader week, which means the second game starts at 1:05
Pacific instead of 1:25 -- there's a chance the early game will still be going
at kickoff of the second game. Thus, starting the games on alternate channels,
same as (for example) ESPN frequently does with college sporting events.

L.A. had already been getting all the Chargers away games, as a secondary
market for the Chargers, so I question that this is much more of an issue in
2017 versus 2016. (2016 versus 2015, when the Rams moved here, I might agree
with.) Obviously, it's also somewhat subjective -- the Rams and Chargers both
finished with winning records, so one could argue that they both provided a
number of "good" games.

There were actually four weeks when L.A. got more games than the rest of the
country -- when both the Rams and Chargers happened to be scheduled for the
non-doubleheader network, L.A. also got two games on the doubleheader network.
I don't remember seeing any data on the local ratings in those weeks, which is
too bad, because it would be very interesting.

That said, I am a fan of the Bucs, and they never aired on Sunday in L.A. this
year -- so the only NFL I really watched in L.A. was their Thursday and their
Monday night game.

Yep, NBC apparently has a separate feed of the live "SNL" for the Pacific time
zone (probably picked up by the Mountain time affiliates, too) that's on a
5-second delay. The uses of "shithole" during "Weekend Update" were also
silenced.

"Live on tape" was added to the intro a few weeks before the 2016 election, and
I recall reading that it was added specifically because the shows that had
aired live had done better in the ratings than taped episodes.

Obviously, the ratings have gone up since, and everyone's been attributing that
to the show's anti-Trump political stance -- but maybe it really is due to that
"live on tape" intro!

They'll also stop tape when a contestant hits a Daily Double -- or extend a
commercial break -- if the judges are still trying to determine if a previous
response is acceptable. And the contestant interviews are sometimes edited for
time.

That said, I'm sure game shows being taped in real-time is more due to the
efforts of the producers, rather than the host. I went to a couple of "Price Is
Right" tapings back in the Bob Barker era, and I'm positive he would have been
very happy to drag out his interactions with the contestants. (I've only ever
seen clips of his work on "Truth or Consequences," but I've seen it said that
he was better on that show than he was on "Price Is Right.")

Sia hasn't been the musical guest this season -- in fact, her most recent
appearance was two seasons ago, on November 7, 2015, when the guest host was
some guy named Donald Trump.

I assume Melissa was referring to SZA, who was the musical guest on the James
Franco episode on December 9.

I really liked the self-referential narration.

Conveniently enough, if “A Futile and Stupid Gesture” makes you want to watch
it, “Caddyshack” is also available on Netflix.

No, we're supposed to WIN every event to prove an idiot Fox News executive
wrong about our "darker, gayer, different" team. (Note that less than 10% of

Lotsa luck. Both the 30th and the 33rd should be very safe for their Democratic
incumbents in the fall (Brad Sherman and Ted Lieu, respectively), regardless of
who's running against them.

Sometimes when a special report interrupts a show, the networks will re-feed it
later, for the benefit of affiliates who might have been recording it to
broadcast later. (Such as Alaska, Hawaii, and Arizona for much of the year.)

Yeah, the closed-captioner who was monitoring NBC's feed was always at the
ready to dial in to the modem for "studio 3B" (or whichever one was being kept
"hot" for special report purposes).

I was never entirely clear on how things were working on the video transmission
side of things, but I do know that "Tonight Show" captions went to a modem in
Burbank, while "Late Night" (and "Later") captions went to New York. Because
there was a seamless transition between the shows, there was some rigamarole
involving the backup modem in the control room and a production assistant -- by
which I mean me -- being nervous about accidentally disconnecting the wrong
modem at the wrong time. (The captions for the late-night shows were prepared
in advance via an audio feed of the taping, but were sent out "live" as they
aired.)
