Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site

2013-01-25 Thread Anton Kerezov
I just want to mention that by the time I added artwork to that
aforementioned page the theme was not official at all but just my vision of
a design attempt that would make Ubuntu more beautiful and visually
organised. I even don't know if it is still included in Ubuntu as Gnome 3.0
has arrived becuase my work now is done with complex BIM software that
could not run on linux.

P.S.
Keep on walking ;)

Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site

2013-01-25 Thread Anton Kerezov
Several years ago we used to store all the concepts here: https://wiki.
ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave
(this is the page of my old theme). What happened to that place?

I have nothing against creating many places for artwork as this would
encourage fair point of view and ratings. But the question I asked is Is
there really a need for such a place and can't you use already build
infrastructure to store your work? Maybe I'm too old and rational but
imhothis is just a unnecessary exercise, isn't it?

It might start soon (but not earlier that a month) and will finish when
it is bug free and working. That depends on how things would work and if
there are no bugs that stop the development. I really got some feedback
and a lot of people would love to see this working but it won't be easy
to implement. These days I'll speak with some people that develop the
gtk theme rendering (manage all the engines an the way they work) and
see if things are going to change radically in gnome 3.0 or no, so on
that depends too if I'm even starting this.

I don't understand why people think pixmaps are bad. With the power of
today's computers you even don't see the difference between code based
and image based theme plus the fact that the detail and quality is at
least two times more for the little more you "pay".

But as you say I might wait and see what Gnome 3.0 will deliver on the
theming side. I thought that later this could be integrated with the css
theme engine by simply having two (or more in the future) buttons:
"Export pixbuf based theme" and "Export CSS based theme".

Yeah I think that there could one more page "Package" alonside the
others. I think that a numbered list of steps in order to create the

Sure it does need this and will get one in the real project.

Example:
image {
   function = SLIDER
   recolorable  = TRUE
   state= PRELIGHT
   file = "Images/Range/null.png"
   border   = { 0, 0, 0, 0 }
   stretch  = TRUE
   overlay_file= "Images/Range/slider-vert-prelight.png"
   overlay_stretch  = FALSE
   orientation  = VERTICAL
  }
where the thermer may want to stretch the overlay or

 image
{
  function  = BOX
  state = NORMAL
  detail= "spinbutton_up"
  recolorable   = TRUE
  file  = "Images/Spin/spin-up-bg.png"
  border= { 2, 2, 2, 2}
  stretch   = TRUE
  overlay_file  = "Images/Spin/arrow-up.png"
  overlay_stretch   = FALSE
}

where you might want to stretch the arrow somehow and use some specific
image for bg. Still it is very uncommon to do so :) If the creator want
he can open the file and edit this manually.

As you say a GUI that creates a template folder with template svgs
(probably with example content in them) would be perfect along with that
rect that the designer specifies to be a border.

The example is the edges of very small images that have round corners.
Sometimes you need to adjust these details so that they become invisible
for most of the cases. You can check the entry images of new wave. They
have been refined a lot.

But I suggest this could be changed by using larger images (but slowing
down the whole theme with load times)

If I accept your idea for the svg workflow then how could we specify
desired borders? Could we use some rect to define numerical values to be
used in the gtkrc? And what about stretch and other on demand values?
Maybe the converter script could have GUI to set all this things?

Well it is not so simple because when you export the image from Inkscape

I was thinking of a explorer like structure where there are categories
for Button, Checkbox etc. with a subcategories of the states. Then when
you click on certain state you can specify the image (or change the
default provided) for it and other options such as overlay file (if it
is supported), borders in which the images is not scaled (every image
has such), stretch boolean flags and some other options of the pixmap
engine.

I'm still not aware of the way things could be automated even more.

creation with a GUI editor where you specify images and their
properties. Would there be someone that would like to help me out with
that? Generally all discussion is fine and I accept all ideas and
criticism. What do you think about this idea is it possible and woth

In the readme of the theme pack there's a change log. You can find it
here too:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/New+Wave?content=87134

Actually New Wave is the whole theme not the window decoration only.

No problem ;) I can recommend this theme too for inclusion in the
community-themes package.

James if you have time you could desaturate a bit the highlight at the
corners so that they are equally strong colors with the top highlight thus
merge into one. Besides that I have no further remarks.

Cool. I don't mind at all :) You could check out revision 73 from here:
https://code.launchpad.net/~ankere/anton/devel

it should contain the folder newwave-theme-src. Be aware that a lot of the
svg output will need further adjustment in gimp as I have worked only on the
pngs lately to fix small issues.

I will update all the content in LP when releasing the next version.

I think the theme is quite finished. The only thing I'm not sure about is
the lack of highlights at the top corners of the metacity that makes it
unfinished. Maybe it iw wanted but I would make the highlights to see how
they would look like and then choose what to use.

This time I agree with the others. There are some things to note that
probably will improve the looks of the gdm:
* Than bg color is not cool. Desaturate the reds in it or make it lighter.
* This checker style is not ok imo. If you remove these the user list will
look much better and as as one interconnected whole.
* I would try the white bg f the glow to be some different color (lighter
brown that would look transparent).

These assumptions are just my point of view. I like more the previous design
with the enchantments you have done though.

There are certainly things that I don't like too but I'm just curious to
know how would they implement that glow and all other things. That is pretty
impossible right now (at least I don't a way to do it). Also that dialogs
and windows have inconsistent shadows and highlight, seem rather flat, the
active item does not feel right with it's vast white bg but it is a starting
point. If somebody can implement that then it would be very easy to add some
gradient to the active items or tune up shadows and transparencies. That was
my point.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Karmic boot and login - proposed designs

2009-08-11 Thread Anton Kerezov
I really don't understand you guys. You should be happy that something is
happening and it looks cool and matches every possible theme the user might
choose afterwords because it is as neutral as possible (B&W). I can't see
how the current GDM is better that the proposed one? The new style just
feels modern and will definitely not be liked by many but many others will
enjoy it. That is just a start and if implemented it will develop and become
better over time just as every theme, program or whatever product. As this
is only a mockup we will have to wait for a real release to be able to
criticise more.

[ubuntu-art] New Wave User Requests

2009-07-16 Thread Anton Kerezov
Hello everybody,

This thread is about telling me what you would like to have
changed/added in New Wave so that it better fits your needs. Fell free
to express everything.

Not everything that is requested thought will be included because first
I'll have to make sure it will be of benefit to everybody else using the
theme. So here is a list of things that are already changed and will
make it in 0.8.1:

 - Combobox fix in Open Office and other apps that use the old format
option-box.
 - Brasero notifications fix.
 - Scrollbars inside OO and FF are much better looking and integrating.
 - Metacity improvements for dialog windows (bottom line in titlebar and
modal dialogs look different). unfortunately these additions do not show
when you use compiz.

I like the first version because of the clear lines. The displays we
have now are very limited from resolutions so the idea you have (curved
paper) is good but not for that technology yet. I have only one concern
that the shadow at the bottom of the 48x48 is smaller than the one at
the sides. What do you think Sebastian?

Thanks. I like your submission too but you could make it even better if
you make it the same style as this one:

For FF use the theme provided in the package here (v 0.8):

I'm only talking about the degree of openness here and that the edges are in
diff position than the back side. But it wasn't as blurry as the previous

Well it looks too blurry and the front pane looks as if it's shrinking by
going up.
See this old new wave screenshot. It has an experimental folder icon in it's
left corner:

I have made this long ago and I don't keep the sources but my idea is
generally that. The colors may be further tweaked.

I agree that there are some apps that ignore the rules of positioning
the scrollbars but you can get used to it. Even if it is only scrollbar
it preserves it's shape and general sunken look at the left side.

You mean right edge? No I haven't experimented because my purpose is to
cut lines in order to make the interface look simpler. I have done this
because ppl use the only slider to drag the contents up and down and the
arrows very rarely. That is why I decided the right lines are not
necessary at all.

I know for this but don't know how to match (in the gtkrc) the entry of
the combo in order to make it with better shape to fit the button
(currently drawn: normal entry + partial button). If you know smth I'll
be glad to hear it.

> So there is this white border around it (I am talking about the

Thank you for the feedback.

1) It would be nice indeed but the image used for panels could not be
stretched due to limitation of Gnome. So I'm using one universal image
for top/bottom and all sized panels. If I make a highlight at the top of
the image for the bottom panel it would be ugly in the top panel. i
think that the panels "stand out" by their darker color and in the same
time are usable.

2) This is also a problem with GTK because the text control could not
have transparent backgrounds (the white pixels left) thus I'm using the
most appropriate color for the control to fit it's usual (light grey or
white) background. You cannot see this in clearlooks because the panel
is light. Also the pixmap engine is known for not such a great
flexibility when it comes to integration and merging of widgets.

Probably it is possible to make a exception matching for textboxes in
panels but that would not solve the problem on other dark backrounds.

The firefox theme is only beta plus it would probably not be included in
Ubuntu. But if Kenneth decides I will polish it some more and will

Thank you!

The sliders should not be as dark as the metacity because if
they are they will attract too much attention and will not be usable.

The will look even better without the up and down arrows from the gtkrc.
This version with arrows is specially for Ubuntu's defaults because Open Office
does not
display sliders if they don't have steppers (very strange if you ask me).

What I meant about the perspective is that the circle is not correctly

It is good but not as the first version IMO. As it is now the orange
splash stays too "out of the image". In order to remove this feeling you
should add the bright colors or some shades of orange in other parts of

Well I think that the first version is better for bg (the second is better
to be just picture but not bg) because the colors are a bit dimmed and help

@ Saleel

Well I'm not real gui designer either but I'm trying my best at creating
usable themes. Regarding the progressbar it is usually so rapidly moving
that you don't see anything. In the cases you see it I want to "attract" the
attention of the user to the part that is moving forward by making it more
orange.

Well the arrows are not a big problem because without them the interface
looks much more consistent and because we all use the scroll wheel or drag
the sliders instead of clicking on arrows. I have made a special version of
arrow states that will fit the new scrollbars and everybody will be able to
turn them on/off by simly modifying 2 lines of the gtkrc file. I wish there
was some small graphical python utility to do that but I have no experience
at this.

Thanks for the quick response.

Well the horizontal progressbar is only experimental right now (yes it's
new) but it seems to integrate well for now. What do you think about it?
Thorsten Wilms did not liked it but I think it is just fine. On the other
hand the vertical progressbars have't changed but they are not very
important as I haven't seen an app to use them.

Thank you!

I will use the mention of New Wave in order to present an early alpha
version of the upcoming 0.8.0. I'd like to know what do you think for
the scrollbars and treeview control. Also pay attention to the fact that
the Firefox theme is in very early stages of development (derived from
the dust's firefox theme as it was most user friendly for me) but
opinions about it would be good too.

@Anton, I thought about that. I'm gonna try it on a next version.

@Cory, I think what Anton means it's that I should decide how my design
should look like :)

Exactly! J Sebastian is the only person that should decide on what has to be
included or not. Sorry for my English, it was a hard day today and I'm tired
so I make mistakes.

I made a new version of the orange/black start-here. You can see it at
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/113489/start-here3.png

I like that orange version too but is it possible to use sizes larger than
24px for the length? If yes you could try to extend a bit the right side of
the orange bg and thus make the logo in the center.

I made a "Start Here" logo based on Anton's idea.
You can see it at http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/113489/start-here2.png

That looks good but it will be even better if you use the gray of dust's
panel bg for the outline. This way it will not be visible in dark themes and
will be not that distracting in white themes.

But I think you should be the last person that decides what the start button
logo should look like.

I made a "Start Here" button. I only did the 22/24px to see how it look.
I still have to refine it a little but you can see how it look with
different themes at http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/113489/start-here.png

This looks ok but when a I saw it I had an idea - pure white Ubuntu logo
with black outline for dark themes would look very good (though some ppl
will say it's a mac thing) and in white ones could still be visible. Making
such a logo is very difficult as you don't know where the button will be
(top/bottom of the window) and you cannot make specific versions of it. Also
you don't have control of where that dropdown arrow appears.

Very nice progress on Breath. I like how it's shaping so far and just
the drive optical is a bit different to the set.

Keep up the good job both of you!

Check yhis site out first:

There are a lot of anime themes ad other stuff there. You could start
learning by downloading the theme and inspecting it's contents. For more
info visit:

So When I post a message regarding an update of a theme for example
people will still be able to discuss it here, right? If not can you
explain the concept for those of us that don't understand it fully.

[ubuntu-art] New Wave Fast update

2009-01-25 Thread Anton Kerezov
That happens when you try to make things too fast. People never hurry up
publishing anything! Always test!

In my case Rhythmbox looks ugly with these new flat styles for Eclipse
so I had to reupdate everything again. The new version is now available
on Gnome-look again. Hope that everything is ok now!

[ubuntu-art] New Wave 0.7.2 Available

2009-01-25 Thread Anton Kerezov
Hello everybody,

Today I released a new version of New Wave:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/New+Wave?content=87134

Main changes:

- Finally managed to fix Panel resize problem. Now you can have your
panel looking good in all sizes. This fixes the banshee song popup
window too.
- Better integration into eclipse - make toolbars with flat style and
not so space taking
- Some tweaks to the tool window's metacity

I like them. But why is everybody making this ugly horns on the heads of
the jackalope? This is supposed to be a mythical rabbit that is known
for its fastness. I think we should ignore the case of the ill rabits
with horns and make it look just cute and fast (runnung).

I agree with Cory about the transparency. I really haven't seen solid
rulers since I was 1 grade. They are useless in more complicated
drawings.

About the perspective - I like this one but it really doesn't match the
rest. What do you think if all Icons were in that perspective? Wouldn't
it be better? Or probably have icons with different perspective as real
object because in reality we don't see object "front only".
