[VFB] Great find today.

Theresa and I were up in Roswell today for the Cross Country race supporting 
the Bulldogs. Varsity Girls, (AKA Amanda), took 2nd, Varsity Boys took 3rd 
out of 9 schools represented.

Anyway, Amanda wanted her mom to look for a new CD at the Hastings, (since 
we no longer have one). While T was poking around music, I was back in the 
fishing section. Cam across a gem of a book and wondered if anyone else had 
it. "The Fly-Tying Bible, by Peter Gathercole". I am afraid that this one is 
going to used a lot here for a while due to some of the flies I have never 
heard of, and some variations on some I have tied for years. Great find with 
cold weather around the corner.

Any thoughts?

[VFB] OUR Troops, Fly Fishing Related

This is Theresa and mines second year of working with Christmas For OUR 
Troops.

Last year we sent over 600 box's to OUR Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. My 
personal goal this year is over 1000. In fact, it is such a goal for me that 
if we brake the 1000 names and APO's mark, Theresa gets to shave my beard 
off, (mind you, I have had this beard since I was medically released from 
service in 1998). I want to make that goal, or even surpass it.

Stay with me, there is a reason for this post to the group. #1, if you know 
of anyone who is, or knows someone over there, please get me their name and 
apo address. If you have contact with someone over there, have them help by 
providing the names and apo address of those they serve with. Especially 
make sure they let you know who gets little or no mail. Please send names 
and APO's to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I will get them on the data base within the 
hour. Just help me out by putting CFOT APO in the subject line. Help us 
close in on the 1000 mark.

#2, when I was at sea it was always a special moment when I got mail. It was 
even better when there was some simple surprise in it that reminded me that 
someone back home was thinking of ME. I was wondering if it would be to much 
trouble to ask the group for something. Would it be possible for each of you 
to pick up an inexpensive pack of Thank You Cards, jot something down in 
each of them, and maybe include a fly with a toe tag with the name of the 
fly, and your e-mail address?

This thought came to me a bit ago when I was cleaning up at the tying bench 
and started coming across some box's of flies from swaps, some years ago. It 
reminded me that a simple thing like a well tied fly can spark excitement 
and memories of great times. I am going through and selecting a bunch of 
flies from my boxes, some of the best I have ever tied. Theresa is going to 
get the cards and her and Amanda are going to do the same. We have 
absolutely no idea who is going to get a card, but have the faith that those 
that do, will receive something special to them, and make their day better.

I know that the possibility of coming up with a 1000 cards and flies is more 
than likely unobtainable. But, as many as we can send is a chance to 
brighten someone's day.

If you think you might like to participate, with any amount, small or large, 
of cards, or cards and flies, drop me a note off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] 
Also, feel free to forward this to anyone you think may be interested.

I will need all cards in hand by November 29th because we make the final 
haul to Midland on December the 1st to sort, pack and ship the boxes.

[VFB] Urgent Prayer Request

Folks, I have an Urgent Prayer Request for EVERYONE. Sgt Anson Martin is
returning to the states for surgery on his shoulder.  This young man has
been a pen pal of mine and a major contact in country in Iraq. We all know
that if it was not a serious situation he would not be medivaced back to the
states.

Being the Hero that he is, he is playing it off as a no brainier. Please,
keep this young man, his wife and kids, Mother and Father all in your
prayers. For a quick recovery, travel blessings for him, and his parents as
they head down to check on their son.

Sgt. Martin is the one who has put me in contact with a Sgt. in country in
Afghanistan for CFOT. And he is the one who has been keeping me updated on
arrivals and troops in country in Iraq. Please ask God for special blessings
for him, his family, and those he has left in country whom he cares for so
much.

His heart is bigger than the entire South West.

I apologize for causing such an UPROAR asking for prayer for a pen pal. I 
didn't mean to start such a ruckus on the group.

It may interest you to know though, that Sgt Martin is stationed in Port 
Orchard Washington. He is an avid outdoorsman and fisherman.

We have recently been talking about fly fishing and fly tying. He has tried 
fly fishing before but with not much luck as he put it. And he has never 
tied flies before. He thought it may be a nice change for him to learn it as 
a new hobby to help him stay connected to his home and family. I have been 
working on putting a vice and some other things together for him, passing on 
some of the wonderful things that folks on this list sent me and Amanda when 
we got back into fly tying.

I must say, some of the posts hurt me very deeply. Discounting any soldier 
who is far from home, for whatever reason, is distasteful to me. I count it 
as the same thing as a mother abandoning her new born child because it was 
not a girl. Go figure

The reason I made the post was to let others know that a new member of the 
Fraternal Order of Fly Fishers was injured. Nothing more. So if you don't 
mind, I will keep my thoughts, and prayers to myself from now on.

I am the way I am because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time while 
serving my country. I didn't ask for it. Wasn't looking for it. And Damn 
Sure didn't want it when it happened. But such is life.

I will ignore the whole group if it makes someone put down brave young 
souls, (some of whom are interested in learning to tie flies and fly fish), 
and reduce these kids to ridicule and disfavored. Just remember, "you" have 
the ability to chose to bitch, THEY DON'T.

Nuff said, and my last comment on the subject.

Enjoy the basking in your own life, paid for with the Blood of to many 
solders.

Always Remember, "Freedom is Not Free, Someone Paid for it".

I am working on a fly tying station for a nice young man who saves all of 
his allowance for fly tying supplies. I am going to include a vice, bobbin, 
bodkin and other tools with the station. I am also going to send some tying 
materials, hooks etc.

Was wondering if anyone else would like to contribute something for this 
young man. His mom calls him a Tech Winnie but lives to tie flies.

If you would like to contribute anything just send it to me with a note, 
"For the Kid", and it will go in his box.

I plan on having the station completed and reedy to ship around December the 
12th.

[VFB] Time and Date for the BIG SHAVE

Well, folks, it is set in stone now. Hope as many of you that can will join
Theresa and myself at Tate Branch Dodge on south first street, Artesia NM,
this Saturday at 10:00 AM. Theresa will be removing my 20 year growth of
beard, as well as my hair, hopefully with little blood loss.

As it stands right now, we have surpassed our goal of 1000 Troops to Serve,
and are closing in on 1100, who knows where we will top out at.

I want to Personally thank each and every one of you for what you have help
accomplish, I KNOW that the Troops that will receive the box's will love you
for it.

But please, don't stop now, we have about 10 days to go, and will keep
getting names and APO's as well as items for the box's up until the 26th. In
fact, I will collect names and items all the way up till the 30th. I plan to
head out with the remaining collections the 1st for delivery to the
warehouse and get things finished up and ready to ship. If all goes as
planned, the Box's will be in the mail on December the 4th.

Thanks again everyone, because without YOU, this would not have happened.

Mine was a "Mudler Minnow", with a west Texas twist, from the pattern in 
"McClain's Standard Fishing Encyclopedia". It caught my very first trout, a 
Brown, on the north fork of the south Platt river in Colorado about 1968.

Have several of the decimated kin in my very first fly box, but the first 
was lost to a rock fish along that same river a few days later.

Very fond memories. Thanks for helping me remember.

Here is an interesting question. What was your first fly that you tied? Do 
you still have it? Do you still tie that same pattern and use it for 
fishing.

My first fly (I'll have to post a picture of it) was a Mickey Finn Streamer 
w/ Peacock tied over the top. I still have it displayed in a case in our 
front room. People once and awhile will ask about it. It was the first fly 
that a beginner fly tying kit instructed me to tie.

Just thinking, have not hosted a swap in a while, was wondering if anyone 
would be interested in a "First Fly" swap? Could make it a bit interesting 
if each tier included a story of how they decided to tie the fly, how they 
got started and the results.

I could put this into a word document so that each would not only have the 
pattern, but the story with it about how you got started.

[VFB] Now Special Project, Your first fly you tied Swap + Story

[Desert Eagle]

OK Folks, I have decided to create a Special project for the "First Fly Tied 
Swap". I think that most everyone on the group could participate in this 
one, and benefit greatly from it.

Each participant will supply 1 fly, (your first fly or favorite fly), with a 
story about you and the fly with the recipe for it. These flies, with toe 
tags, will be professionally photographed by my friend Cliff. Note, if you 
want to include photos with your story fine, the more the better. Please put 
your stories in MS word for easy assembly and editing.

All the stories and photos will be compiled into a book, dedicated to Eric 
Bjork, the 7 year old fly tier/ fly fisherman that I and many of you have 
adopted in a form as our charges, and the VFB Group.

BTW, those that sent items for him, "The Kid", should be in his moms hands 
today or tomorrow.

His mother is working on getting me the story of how and why he got started 
in fly tying and fishing, with photos.

After all the information is compiled and edited, Eric will receive the 
first copy of the book, with all the original flies submitted. Each 
participant will receive a copy of the book in hard copy.

This project will be dedicated to all those who have made the VFB group the 
shining success of what it is, and to Byard for his insight to form it, and 
promote it. I am thinking that publishing future copies to be sold 
exclusively through Lines End, and any proceeds go to Byard and future 
endeavors that he supports for the VFB and Fly Fishing/ Tying in general. 
Possibly some of the Veterans organizations that provide fishing experiences 
for wounded/ disabled vets?

now they are Snow Bound in Michigan, but plan to head for Florida in March.

Morning Iain,

She has been working on the paperwork, essays and especially her grades for
it. She got a 97 on an English paper a few weeks back and I thought we were
going to have to call the paramedics. We went down last weekend for the
meeting and she had a 40 minute interview with professors who were part of
the decision. There were 47 students that made the cut, and only 5 got the
full ride honors scholarship.

Yep, she has worked hard for it, even though she already has a full ride
from the VA, she wanted to do it on her own. She has been working with her
VA counselor and wants to save that for her masters and doctorate in Micro
Biology specializing in nerve repair and regeneration for paralyzed vets.

Good girl we have, and very proud of her.

Bob, if mine aren't there, let me know and I will try to do a Marathon tying 
session to get them to you. We just got, (the 2nd of this month), a new post 
office. The old Temp one was questionable at best. Even Amanda had to 
contact collages several time due to things they sent not getting here. So 
it is possible that some things going out were "re-routed" some how.

We now have our Permanent Postmaster Gina and she takes our mail Very 
Seriously. She is so good, I have to make lunch for her at least 3 times a 
week.

This  message, is so true to form with most who are over the age of 60.

My kids deviled me  to get  a  computer for years -- so I could IM them--I 
got one and called it  a confuser for a long time.  I now have  a laptop, 
GPS  and camera cell phone.  I am wireless whatever the Hell that means even 
to printing on my printer from another room  from my laptop, even.  So I am 
as Hi-Tech as I want to be.   Oh yes I don't think my kids even have 
laptops, let alone do they IM me. the reason for all this  electronic stuff 
I bought.

If you don't get  a laugh out of the following  message  you got to be 
under 50  or dead.

To get old, is to go from,
passion to compassion...

Things are spiraling out of control. I think I have become lost in a world 
of electronic madness.

One of my sons informed me this week that my cell phone has become obsolete 
and I must head down to the Cell Phone store and get a phone that is 
contemporary with the time.

I pointed out that the fancy Razor/Slim line phone with camera built in that 
he made me trade my perfectly good flip-top Motorola cell phone for two 
years ago still works perfectly fine. Well, except for the camera thing. 
Never could figure that out... Even the few times I actually did take 
pictures I couldn't figure what to do with them and gave up.

That is except when I would push the wrong button and take a video of the 
ceiling or my feet.

Seems the issue is that I am unable to text with the tiny little 3 character 
buttons. "Hi, son," would come out looking like, "Gh Qmo." My grandkids have 
even spoken to meaboutmy crazy text messages. Give me a break. What ever 
happened to actually talking on a phone? Isn't that what they were invented 
for?

They want me to get one of those phones that you can turn upside down and 
sideways and has a typewriter keyboard with keys about one-eighth the size 
of my pinky finger.

One of my four sons is a realtor whose real occupation is fly fishing. "Way 
to go, son."
Or in my text language, "Xbz um Io, rmo."

We were floating the Yakima River in his guide quality drift boat south of 
Ellensburg, Washington. We were miles from anything remotely resembling 
civilization. Rock canyon walls were on either side of us. Bear with me as I 
try to explain this strange thing.

His "Blackberry" rang. It was blue and I asked him why it wasn't called a 
Blueberry. He shook his head with that dealing with an elder despair look I 
get a lot these days. It was another realtor who called to say that the 
sellers he represented had agreed to my sons' clients' changes and he had 
the signed documents in hand.

My son told him to FAX the papers to his office and he would get them signed 
and Faxed back, to close the deal that morning. A minute later the phone 
rang and he hit a few buttons and looked over the FAX, now on the Yakima 
River with us.

He then called his clients and told them he was Faxing the papers to them to 
sign and asked them to FAX them back to his office. While he was waiting, he 
hooked into a fat rainbow and was just releasing this 22 inch beauty as his 
phone rang again with the signed FAX from his clients.

He called the other realtor and told him he was sending the signed papers 
back by FAX. The deal was closed. He smiled and just said, "You are a little 
behind the times, Dad." I guess I am.

I thought about the sixty million dollar a year business I ran with 1800 
employees, all without a Blackberry that played music, took videos, pictures 
and communicated with Facebook and Twitter.

I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their 
spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in 
the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with 
only 140 characters of space.

That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, 
Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and 
something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program 
within the texting world.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything 
except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to 
live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost 
every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that 
in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am 
supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at 
Barnes and Nobles talking to my wife as every one in the nearest 50 yards 
was glaring at me. Seems I have to take my hearing aid out to use it and got 
a little loud.

I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside was 
the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 
minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-ul-ating" You would think 
that she could be nicer. It was like

turn into the most beautiful woman you  have ever seen. I'll make sure that
all your friends are envious and jealous  because I will be your bride!"

The man looked at the frog for a short  time,
Reached over,  picked it up carefully, and placed it in his front breast
pocket.

Then  the frog said, "What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I
said kiss  me and I will be your beautiful bride."

He opened his pocket, looked at  the frog and said,
"Nah,  at my age I'd rather have a talking frog."

With  age comes wisdom.  Look what we have to look forward  to

I know this is not the normal forum for such posts, but if you would permit
me I would like to ask for a prayer request.

I just got a call from my sister, and it appears that my mother Mary Ann,
has just given up. She is in the hospital in Monahans Texas, and it seams
that everything is shutting down on her. She has repeatedly said that she is
ready to go home, and it looks like she has just given up trying.

Please, keep my sisters, Lynn and Sissy and myself, all of moms grand kids
and great grand kids, friends and families in your prayers.

My sister Lynn is in Spokane Washington right now with her daughter and her
family, and Theresa and I are here in Lakewood waiting for the first of the
month.

It is not expected for her to last through the night, and my only prayer is
that she can go peacefully and not in pain.

[VFB] Closing on 1200 Troops...

An "Molly" is offering to help "tease" my hair for going Red White and
Blue.

Love it, Thanks to ALL of you, OUR Kids are going to know they are not only
thought of, but Loved, Prayed for and most of all, RESPECTED.

Thank you all, and enjoy Molly contemplating my new HAIR.

This is a bit OT, but I needed to thank everyone who has helped with names 
and APO's for our 2009 Christmas for OUR Troops. We have surpassed our goal 
this year of 1500 troops served, and continue to add names and APO's.

Thanks to everyone's continued help, my Bride and Friends have me scheduled 
to get my hair Spiked and dyed Red White and Blue. And I will proudly ware 
it in support of all of OUR Troops.

Thanks everyone, and if you have any more names and APO's please send them 
to me so they will receive a box of JOY, best of all, they don't know its 
coming.

Sorry for being lat on this, Christmas for OUR Troops has had me up to ears 
in running. But, OUR Troops are the winners.

The most memorable of the Rivers I have fished is the North Fork of the 
South Platt river near Hartselle Colorado. It was the very first Trout 
stream I got to fish as a kid.

After that we add the Pecos River, San Juan, Rio Ruidoso, Tularosa Creek, 
the Rio Bonito, all in New Mexico.

Of these, my favorite for experience would be the San Juan, for regularity 
the remainder of the NM ones.

Don O, I would be greatly interested. We have just finished up sending out 
1938 box's of joy to our kids in Iraq and Afghanistan, so I am gradually 
clearing out the stuff in the family room so I can find the tying bench. We

  I've just taken it one step further... yesterday I got too violent 
with a couple of flies and the thread broke by the hook. But, like you 
said "memory". The ropes are still on my bench. Now I have tried another 
technique.

  You start with making a rope... and I mean a tight rope... and I mean 
a very tight rope... and I mean a TOO tight rope. Then you cut that rope 
from the bobbin and tie it in at the breaking point. Then you make another 
one, lmost too tight. Now you have two ropes, one on the thread to your 
bobbin and one hanging freely... and you can start your parallel weave!! 
LOL

  It's tricky but possible. And by having one of the strands(ropes) 
connected to your bobbin, this is a parallel weave that you can practice 
without having to cut the thread first... which became another one of those 
"chills" I've been having. You can do this with other materials too... just 
tried with antron and it worked like a charm. When the weaving was done, the 
thread wasn't lying beside the vise, but it was in your hand, ready to be 
wrapped around the antron strands. ;o)

Cool fly. Better name.

Also try this.
After you make your rope with the dubbing and hackle, compress it 
towards the hook and re-tighten (like the shaping segment).  This works best 
if you use monofilament for the core (or wire), and things get tight and 
friction fights you.
You may have a 3" long rope that you can compress 30-50%, and it 
will look way buggier, with better segments, and more dense.  It will also 
feel more life-like to a fish.

Folks: I'm sorry that this is OFF TOPIC, but I need help. I must have been a 
good little boy this year because I found out today that my wife is getting 
me a laptop for Christmas. But, I need a router for it. Now, if somebody has 
one they are not using and could use some furled leaders, a book or two on 
fly tying, some hooks, or other materials I have a l;ot of, like  deer hair, 
I'd be glad to trade. My son says the routers are generic, but I'm not so

'transparent nymphs or flies'.
I have done nymphs, scuds, shrimp, crazy charlies, stones and emerger dries 
with this technique and I really like it. They really catch the light 
without being flashy, and really look great under-water.  I haven't been 
fishing too much lately because of the TN, zombie-medications, and recent 
surgery.  But with my recovery and upcoming travel I hope to give them a 
real workout.



It's soft and squishy-feeling like a real bug because I used clear 
jelly-rope (JR) and vinyl cement (VC). The VC stays flexible and makes 
everything go clear, exposing what's under the JR.  The fly turns out much 
softer and lighter than head cements, epoxy, or UV body cover.

After the eyes are tied down, the hook is wrapped with pearl flash tinsel, 
then a short piece of JR is tied to the bottom (abdomen only). Then make an 
ultra-fine rope of ice-dub, 2 colors, gap-wrapped, & finished off at a 
thicker thorax in front of the short belly JR.

Then tie a long piece of JR to the top( head-2-tail).  I use mono thread so 
the thread is no longer a factor in color- it goes clear with the VC and JR. 
Keep the wraps in the same location to pull down the segments in the JR.

Once everything is tied, pick out the front legs (just a few) and then soak 
the fly in thinned VC to get full penetration to the hook.  This will make 
the fly go clear and hi-lite the underwraps of ice-dub thoughout the clear 
areas.  It also makes the fly sink fast and is very durable.

The dry/emerger version is similar, but tied longer on an emerger hook and 
sporting a parachute wing (wingers) and hackle.  The body is suspended below 
the surface so the clear aspect of the abdomen is effective.  The thorax is 
not tied transparent, but fuzzy ice-dub.

I met 2 guides in Green River on the trip last week, and I gave them about 
two dozen roped flies of all sorts, and extended body worms and transparent 
flies.  They liked them all and were excited about fishing them- especially 
the clear flies.  They loved the rope-dub segments and share-bought a DVD. 
They'll be testing the flies on the Green below Dutch John very soon.

MeddelandeAbout 20 years ago me and a fellow tier/photographer up in 
Montana- Jerry Smalley- had a long conversation about nymphs.  He was an 
avid underwater photographer, and one thing he noticed was that many natural 
underwater insects are transparent when they are alive, and then turn opaque 
only when they die.  We had long discussions about that, and also white 
nymphs.

Since then, many opportunities have come in the way of new materials that 
allow me to experiment with transparency.  As far as fishing freshwater, the 
jury is still out with deliberations on the river.  Saltwater...these clear 
flies are killer.

Jimi, it can be bought in Hobby and craft stores, and from fly shops.

Below is a photo of a small sampling of clear and rope-dubbed nymphs and 
scuds.



I have two boxes full out in my vest in the truck, to try next week on the 
upper Green.

share-bought a DVD.  They'll be testing the flies on the Green below Dutch 
John very soon.

I haven't given these any names yet- I just describe them as 
'transparent nymphs or flies'.
I have done nymphs, scuds, shrimp, crazy charlies, stones and 
emerger dries with this technique and I really like it. They really catch 
the light without being flashy, and really look great under-water.  I 
haven't been fishing too much lately because of the TN, zombie-medications, 
and recent surgery.  But with my recovery and upcoming travel I hope to give 
them a real workout.



It's soft and squishy-feeling like a real bug because I used clear 
jelly-rope (JR) and vinyl cement (VC). The VC stays flexible and makes 
everything go clear, exposing what's under the JR.  The fly turns out much

[VFB] Lost everything VFB related

[Desert Eagle]

Well folks, it happened again last week. We had a big boomer and the
computer went down. I lost all my VFB stuff, all my recipes and patterns as
well as photos.

Don O, do you still have the photos and recipes for the clear stretchy stuff
you made the soft bodies with? Also, what was the adhesive you used and what
did you thin it with?

Sad at a loss of such a wealth of info I had on everything from tying flies
to rod building and making furled leaders. Much of which will never be able
to be replaced.

You can back up your emails if you use a created file for them on your
c-drive.
If you choose not to, then you will lose your email files in a crash, photos

We are helping clean up a vets property to keep him out of trouble with the 
county. While hauling some boxes out to the
dump trailer the bottom fell out. As I was picking up the stuff I came across 
what appears to be a new, (old), box of
"JB Brand Kirby Fish Hooks". Anyone familiar with them? They are in a cardboard 
box with wax paper wrapping the hooks.

I don't do this often, but my best friend, Steve Taylor's wife Val could
use a few prayers. Those of you who read my book will remember Steve as
the "stay-at-home-Dad".

Valerie was walking down the parking lot to the grocery, when a lady
hit her from behind. Val had been bent down to pick up her cellphone
that she dropped, when the lady's son dropped his sippy cup and she
reached back to retrieve it. Wham! Valerie literally got 'rear-ended'
Val's friend Karen tried to push Val away and ended up breaking her
middle finger.  Thank God it wasn't lunch hour for the lot would have
been full of people going into the pizza parlor, right next to the
grocery.

The upshot is that valerie's right leg is a mess from ankle to knee.
all kinds of pins and rods, one rod even on the exterior of her leg.
She'll recover, but it'll be at least three months before she'll be
able to get around again. The VFB came to Jody's aid when she was
fighting cncer, i.e. Jody's Rainbow Angels" and Steve from a severe
brain injury. Both have fully recovered and I know without a doubt
that the VFB's prayers played a huge part in both their recovery.

We are in Eagle nest now and the lake is open for fishing and
camping, but all Federal Lands and State Parks are still closed due very dry
conditions and a very high fire danger. Red River is closed, Cimerron River
through the State Park is closed. I have seen some nice trout coming out of
the lake, heard of a few salmon. From shore and boat.

Not hooks but...RE: [VFB] Jig Hooks

Tony and all, not about hooks, but an update. This coming week we will be 
headed to Tucson for surgery on my pancreatic cancer at the VA hospital there. 
I apologize for not keeping up with folks but we have had an interesting few 
years pat. That includes a few computer losses and lost emails and contacts. If
