What do you know, you are correct, I just tried this on my iPhone 11, I pressed
volume up, then volume down and then I pressed the side button and held it for
a moment and the Power off screen came up and focus was actually on the Power
Off button, so this is actually not a bad way to do this at all.

First, your description of the screen after pressing the volume down and side
button was great, and thanks so much for it. I actually will use that method
for turning off the phone from now on. But second, although I won't use it
anymore, when checking again just now, I sure did get a power off screen where
I could either power off or cancel if I pressed the volume up button and
released it, pressed the volume down button and released it, and then pressed
the side button for a second or two and released it. Sometimes it even said
power off before I could release the button so I knew that screen had come up.
However, if when following the above procedure I held down the side button for
about ten seconds and then released it, the phone did indeed restart.
Oh, this is on my XR running iOS 15.1. I had originally purchased this phone
used off one of the blindness buy and sell lists and was planning to give it to
a family member but just kept it when that particular person had already
purchased an iPhone SE 2020 on their own. Thus since I now have this phone and
a couple of older ones I'm using to see how long it will take for their
batteries to run down, my poor 12 Mini is still in the drawer where I put it in
its box when I ordered it on the first day Apple started taking orders for it.
My first generation iPhone SE now shows its maximum capacity at 57 percent but
still supporting normal peak performance. And while the battery might last a
few hours on standby, things like web surfing or TV watching will often, but
not always, cause the battery to run down within an hour, and it never lasts
more than two hours doing those kinds of things. In fact, the battery for that
phone is pretty much completely unpredictable as to just how long it will last,
sometimes showing 100 percent after charging overnight and then going down to
zero and just shutting off if I perform an action such as going a couple of
layers into the settings.

Read the message I sent initially, I pasted the text as it is showing up
exactly. This is a new feature in iOS 15.

If you have iOS 15 on your phone you can also just check it yourself, bring up
the power off screen and tap on the button below Power Off, it has a weird
label and if you double tap it you'l get the message about this.

Below is the first paragraph of a 9to5Mac article about this feature:

With iOS 15, your iPhone is still traceable through the Find My network even
when the device is powered off. It seems that with iOS 15, the phone is not
really fully "powered off", it stays in a low-power state and acts like an

AirTag, allowing any nearby iOS device to pick up the Bluetooth signal and send
back its location.

iOS 15: Find My network can still find your iPhone when it is powered off, or
factory reset -

Sieghard, Wait...What, My phone after turning it off or the battery dies still
sends out a location signal??? How is this possible? Is this feature within the
IOS software? Or is it available on newer devices as a hardware chip or
something? I've seen the setting for sending the devices last location before
the device shuts off. The location of a device still being sent after being

Donna, yes, it will if you press and hold the power button, but after about 2
seconds the power off screen comes up and if you then let go of the volume
button the phone won't restart, it will simply sit there with focus on the
power off button and all you have to do to shut it down is to double tap.

Hi Alan,

Another good observation so this method for powering off the phone is clearly
better than holding volume button and side button at the same time since by
doing so one after each other you don't get all the other stuff like Medical Id
and Emergency Call. However, that weird Location.Radiowave button still showed
up for me on that screen.

Hi Vicky,

I also get a power off button at the top of the screen when pressing and
releasing volume up, pressing and releasing volume down, then holding down the
side power button for a couple of seconds. Only power off and cancel are on the
screen with this method. If the side power button is held down for several
seconds with this method, the phone does a hard reset. This is on my iPhone 13
Mini.

I'm curious why your iPhone 12 Mini is in a drawer. You really didn't explain
what the problem is with it. I love my 13 Mini.

2021-11-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Donna, I am sure what you are describing is correct, but I think this button on
the power off screen refers to the new feature where an iPhone's location is
still being sent even after the phone is powered off. This would mean if
somebody stole an iPhone even powering it off wouldn't prevent the phone's
location from being sent and updated on iCloud. Of course sophisticated thieves
could still find ways to deal with that by placing the phone in a container
which shields it and prevents signals from being sent, but it certainly makes
it yet harder. My criticism is not in the feature but in this strangely
labelled button on the lock screen and its meaning.

I don't think anybody can gain access to somebody's iCloud account, but I do
remember that I once received a replacement phone after something didn't seem
right with mine and while this was a long time ago, I remember wondering why I
saw some weird email address already in the email field when it came time to
sign into iCloud. I assume maybe that was the reason.

My only comment is that Apple should rethink it’s claim to being the most
secure of the smart phones if completely erasing an iPhone through the reset
process enables someone acquiring that phone to get into the prior owner’s
iCloud account. And I’m not sure finding references to old iPhones in your same
account under the same Apple ID is what’s being discussed here.

Alan,

I don't entirely agree here, I sometimes have found references to old iPhones
of mine which I fully erased and sold in my Apple account where I had to remove
them manually and I wonder if maybe signing out of iCloud is a way to prevent
this from happening.

Hi Vicky,

If you've completely erased your phone as part of the reset process in
preparation of selling it, their is no need to also sign out of iCloud. After a
complete reset, the phone will be like a new device.

You can get to the power off button on the screen by holding down either the
volume up or volume down buttons simultaneously with the side power button.
When you do, a new screen appears with power off at the top, followed by
Medical ID, Emergency SOS, and Cancel. If you test this, you will have to enter
your passcode if you cancel out of it.

First, when reading the instructions for selling or giving away or whatever an
old iPhone, before erasing the iPhone, one is also advised to sign out of
iCloud, and I was wondering why since erasing the phone signs one out of
iCloud, anyway?

Second, in regards to turning off the iPhones without the home button, I know
Apple talks about holding in one of the volume buttons and the side button for
a few seconds. But being afraid of calling 911 by mistake, I've always pressed
the volume up button and released it, pressed the volume down button and
released it, then pressed the side button and released it and I have gotten the
dialog to shut down the phone. I know Apple gives these instructions for force
restarting the phone, but one needs to hold down the side button quite a bit
longer for this. Anyway, by turning the phone off the way I am, what am I
doing, and does it harm the phone in any way?

Hi Vicky,

I also get a power off button at the top of the screen when pressing and
releasing volume up, pressing and releasing volume down, then holding down the
side power button for a couple of seconds. Only power off and cancel are on the
screen with this method. If the side power button is held down for several

I'm curious why your iPhone 12 Mini is in a drawer. You really didn't explain

RE: two questions, signing out of iCloud and turning off iPhone

2021-11-21 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Vicky,

The vol up / down and power doesn't turn the phone off it just restarts the
phone for you.

Just use vol down and power at the same time, and flick to the power off,

As for signing ou of iCloud,

Yes you can I normally do both find my and icloud / apple id at the time I do
the eraise,

That way I get it all done in one go.

But I would suggest when turning the phone off at the end,

Turn vo on and then use the power and vol down to find the shutdoewn button on
the screen
That way you get it correct rather than ringing your local emergency services.

RE: two questions, signing out of iCloud and turning off iPhone

2021-11-21 Thread Alan Lemly

RE: two questions, signing out of iCloud and turning off iPhone

2021-11-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
When you do what you describe you are not actually turning off the phone, you
are restarting it.
If you want to turn it off and you don't want to use the buttons, you can go to
Settings > General > Shutdown and double tap.
This also brings up the same menu as holding down say Volume Down and thew Side
button, focus is most likely on Power Off, but just make sure of it because as
I said, it's the same menu and it also includes the emergency call buton.
Anyways, if you simultaneously press and hold volume down and the side button
until the menu comes up, the only way you call emergency services would be if
focus is on that button and you double tap without tchecking.
I always swipe left until I get to the Power Off button and if it seems I am on
Power Off already I may even swipe right once and back to the left to make
sure. The screen when this menu comes up is laid out as follows:

At the very top you still have the status bar with the time, your cell signal,
Wi-Fi and battery status on the right
Just underneath that is where it says "Double Tap to the Power Off" button, for
a sighted person it actually says "Slide to Power off" because instead of
double tapping they do a left to right swipe.
After this there is now something I realize I never heard before, it says
literally the following "location.fill.radiowaves.left.and.rightiPhone
Findable After Power Off Forward"
I tapped on that to see what it would do and the following message pops up on
the screen:
iPhone remains findable after power off.
Find My helps you located this iPhone when it is lost or stolen even after
power off.
The location is visible in Find My on your other devices and to people in
family sharing you share location with.
You can temporarily turn off Find My network and it will resume when this
iPhone is powered on again.
Then there is an OK button.
What I don't know is whether tapping on this turns off the Find My after power
off because the only thing you can do when you see the above message is tap the
OK button and this takes you right back to the same Power Off screen, but this
weird sounding and not very descriptive button is not read any differently by
Voiceover. I will write to Apple Accessibility and ask for clarification
regarding this.
OK, back to the Power Off screen description:

If you swipe right again you now come to the "Medical Id" button
Another swipe right takes you to the "Emergency Call" button
If you explore the screen instead of swiping right you will find that there is
a bit of a gap between the first two buttons and these two which are pretty
much right in the middle of the screen.

Lastly, if you swipe right again from the Emergency Call button, you find a
"Cancel" button and as the name implies, if you double tap here it will again
close this screen and take you back to wherever you were before.
That button is again after a gap and it's located near the bottom of the screen.
All these buttons go right across most of the screen from left to right, i.e.
you can touch your screen near the left side and drag your finger down and find
them or you can touch the screen near the top on the right side or in the
middle.

You really shouldn't be that afraid, you are much more likely to accidently
call emergency services if you press the side button too many times repeatedly,
just pressing and holding a volume button and the side button won't do that if
you are careful not to double tap afterwards without making sure you are not on
the emergency call button.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I've heard cases of people selling iPhones deleting them, but when the new
buyer starts them, if the previous owner didn't sign out of their iClouds on
the phone, it'll assume you want to continue working with the previous owner's
ID. That's why it's very important to sign out nevertheless, just to be on the
safe side. Good luck!

Subject: two questions, signing out of iCloud and turning off iPhone
