Zoom modem firmware upgrade

Has anyone had experience in upgrading the firmware of zoom modems.
I have the original software which has the drivers and microphone LT 
as well as the software to upgrade the modem. The instructions for 
upgrading are not clear.

Have contacted zoom support in Sydney but can only help with PCs.
Have scoured the net looking for manuals etc with limited success.

Zoom 2900 A attached to Performa 5260
Any assistance appreciated.

I've just helped a friend buy a FireWire webcam. I wasn't able to find the
iBot anywhere but the solution I did find is excellent. It's the Fire-I from
Unibrain. The camera is right at $300 and the quality is excellent. The
bundled apps aren't too bad either. Only thing I didn't like about it is
that it DOES NOT have a microphone in it. Since the person I helped find the
camera has a flat panel iMac and the built in microphone in them is pretty
good it's not a huge deal for them but it might be for others. The camera
does 640x480 native resolution at 20 fps. Adjustable focus from 1.0cm to
infinity. It has adjustable brightness, gamma, shutter, sharpness,
saturation, and gain. To top it all off it's FireWire bus powered or can use
an external power pack (although it doesn't come with the powerpack. Their
website is at http://www.unibrain.com and has some decent information on the
camera.

OmniPage

I posted a problem re OmniPage SE and Pro recently.



I received a lot of Help from Bob Howells and others contacted me with to
say they had similar problems.

I was told that Omnipage is now owned by Scansoft USA and their Aussie arm
is My Learning Systems  and they also have a
toll free number at 1800 998 878. Don't bother. They want $50 to answer an
email and $30 to let me talk to a tech.

The co-author of the Mac Bible in USA told me his answer was to scan using
the SE Version and perform the OCR using the Pro version. He also suggested
I upgrade to Version X. $290 Australian !!

Finally I went to the Canon website and downloaded the latest drivers,
twain, plug-ins (whatever). No joy.

I then changed tack and loaded copies of the new plug-ins into the OmniPage
pro folder and selected them as drivers instead of trying to select a
scanner. SUCCESS. I had to increase the memory substantially but the Pro
version now scans and performs OCR as before.

Thanks to all those who offered suggestions. It is great to have such people
around.

Eudora Probs

into account that I'll be upgrading over the next 6 months to whatever the
latest desktop is at the time. I don't suppose that'll matter much anyway.
The only consideration that I can think of is that a new Mac will probably
have DVD-R capability, and therefore backing up to a series of DVD's might
be the best option on balance??


Buy a firewire hard drive. Use Retrospect , or 
any one of the other available utilities.


Incremental backups or archives to DVD-R probably aren't a bad idea 
either, as it's cheap to make two copies and send them offsite 
(whereas you may be reticent to do this with a firewire hard drive :)

I would like to record some of my LP records on to CD using my
PowerMacG4 and OSX. I have purchased a iMic and it seems to be installed
OK but I can't find any information as to how to record to the hard disk
so I can then record on to a CD. I have Roxio Toast 5.
I am a recent convert to the Mac after many years doing battle with PCs
so my present Mac skills are limited.

Best backup solution?

Would appreciate any advice on the best backup solution please.

I haven't got the bandwidth to worry about backup to a remote site. I
probably need about 20Gb maximum backup capacity, and reliability, ease of
use and speed is the most important thing (to encourage me to do it
regularly). For this reason I don't think a Zip drive and hence multiple
disks is an option.

The answer to both questions is no.

While the camera is recognised by the computer (eg: the CF card shows up in
the finder), Apple System Profiler does not show it connected to the USB
port, as it should. The images are there, as Nikon images, if I open the CF
Card icon. Again, the only problem now is that they will not automatically
upload via NikonView 5, as they did with OS X.1.5

Secondly, can't find anywhere where it says NikonView 5 supports X.2. At
this stage, I think not.

it manually (cmd T), it's greyed out. I have re-check the pref's of
NikonView again, all appears to be correct. What else am I missing?

with OS X 10.2? You may have to wait for an update.

Not all .scr files are a virus they can also be one of the following four

.Fax
Program: FAXVIEW

.Screen Saver
Program: MS WINDOWS

.Screen Snapshot (various programs)

.Script

The reason a lot of them can be a virus is that they can be a written script
that someone has written as a virus.

It always come down to the old adage if you do not know the source don't
open the file or just to be safe, as some people do not know that they are
sending you a virus, always check using your virus checker first.

Hi...

Some more updates based on observations at the weekend:

Disk Utility now lets you verify or repair privileges on the boot 
disk (so you don't need Apple's Privilege Repair utility). Of course 
this is only on the boot disk, so if you've hosed your boot disk by 
setting the privileges inappropriately, you're still doomed to have 
to go through resetting everything by hand :)


The Sound Preferences panel now has sound in and out panes.

No, it is not a new virus.

It is an old virus, that has been around for a bit over a year now. 

Anything that has a:
.scr
.bat
.pif

suffix is a Klez virus. I get a few of them each week. They only affect Windows 
PCs.

I've got a couple of hundred of them these days. I used to trash them, but 
these days I keep them. When people are pondering whether to buy a Mac or a PC, 
I show them all the viruses that are floating around, explain that Macs aren't 
affected, and the person ends up buying a Mac.
