It means you are not 'finding' your ISP's Server therefore not

Likely to be an issue with your Network setup, or your Modem/

Ethermax Ethernet Docking Station and BigPond Next G

2008-10-01 Thread Touchwood

Hi

Is there anybody out there successfully using the Maxon Ethermax
Ethernet Docking Station in conjunction

with a BigPond USB (Blue) Wireless Desktop Modem and Next G ?

All I want to do is set up a network that uses my existing standard
Ethernet Hub/Switch with the
Ethermax to Internet share and printer share between two Macs (a G3
iBook G5 iMac).

The BigPond USB modem will not allow me to use the inbuilt Internet
sharing of the Mac OS and also prevents networking for Printer Sharing.

If I want to Network my computers (via hub Cables) I have to
physically disconnect the Modem. (which invariably plays up the next
time I

reconnect it for use)

Maxon website suggests the Ethermax Docking Station is the
answer...I've researched around some relevant forums...info/
experiences seem a little mixed.

Just like some thoughts from Mac users before I fork out the $299.00.

Thanks for reading

Neil

Hi Martin,

Well, Broadbandnet say their Satellite always on' Broadband Internet
access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The basic connection speed is
512 kbps download 64 Kbs upload.

As there are 8Kb (kilobits) in every KB (kilobyte) ... and you are
saying you are downloading at 46KBps (kilobytes), my calculation by
multiplying your 46KB (kilobyte) by 8 = 368 Kbps transfer rate.
Which seems to indicate it is slower than what Broadbandnet are saying
it should be?

If my calculations are wrong, I stand corrected ;-)

Re: Ethermax Ethernet Docking Station and BigPond Next G

2008-10-01 Thread Andrew Schox
Neil,

I use this product at home, although I didn't like having to fork out an
extra $299 just because Telstra forces you to use a USB modem. Once it is
all set up, however, you can configure your network as you wish.

I find that the modem itself needs to be rebooted from time to time
(sometimes more than once a day, sometimes not for several days).

To summarise, if you are keen to use an outrageously expensive, slow service
with a low bandwidth quota (I think we pay $100 a month for 3 Gigs) like
Telstra, then go for it. Unfortunately there was no other option where I
live...

How to Share (wirelessly) External Drive connected to MacBook Pro

2008-10-01 Thread Stephen Edwards

Hi

Background
I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.1
I have a Western Digital 2 TB drive connected to it - it has been
formatted in Mac OS
I believe I have opened all the sharing preferences I can find to
share pretty much everything on the MacBook Pro.
I have am using a wireless modem and have airport turned on with
excellent signal strength

Problem
I have been trying to access the WD drive wirelessly via the MacBook
Pro from my HD STB (Beyonwiz).
Previously I had the WD drive hanging of my PC Windows Vista beast
and had no problems accessing the drive contents via my HD STB so it
can be done.

I can see the MacBook Pro listed as a computer to connect to, from my
HD STB however when I select it I cannot see any folders or files or
even the desktop for the MacBook Pro.
I in fact can see the Epson printer I have connected to MacBook Pro,
but cannot even see the Shared folder, so it leads me to think I am
not flicking a sharing toggle somewhere.

I am not so familiar with the Mac OS as I am with Vista but I know
enough to be dangerous.

Any assistance or ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Re: windows virus scanner

2008-10-01 Thread Gavin Criddle
Personally, I use CA Anti-Virus from Computer Associates - I've had good
experiences with their products in the corporate and personal environment.

It has a small footprint and have a multi-license for home users - In the free
field, I find AVG a bit slow and unreliable in terms of finding viruses and
prefer Avast - though, this requires a yearly registration, which is free.

Not having a go at the free products as CA used to provide a free home user
license but I think that if want to be sure your Windows box is safe, it's best
to put a few bucks down a year and get a decent antivirus product - kind of
like paying for a car service, since for some reason, computers always get a
car analogy attached to them.

Having said that, really not a fan of Norton products, due to their hunger for
resources and their reluctance to be removed, should their be an issue with the
software that needs fixing. I always enjoy the experience of helping someone
at home with think I have a virus type queries and discovering a 30 day trial
version of Norton Security Suite 2005 - no really.

Anyhow, YMMV.

Apple for reasons best known to them crippled the personal file-
sharing model in Mac OS X taking out the ability to select a folder or
volume as a sharepoint. While this has been put back in 10.5 you can
restore some of the functionality in previous OS versions by using
the shareware software Sharepoints http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/

Is that correct ?

How long had it been working on this set up ?

Martin

I get best download speed of around 156KB/sec on a 1.5Mhz ADSL. My
ADSl speed tests at 1.5 Mhz .

Using that as a reference your 46KB would be equivalent to an ADSL
circuit of around 300 Khz .

I do not know what your ISP is supposed to be supplying you , but some
people I know

have around that speed as normal .

It certainly is a speed that should cause you no problems with mail or

Hello Martin,

Your question:

does this mean

It means you are not 'finding' your ISP's Server therefore not
connecting to the Internet.
Likely to be an issue with your Network setup, or your Modem/
Router, or your ISP server might 'be down' (not available) at the
time.

Check your Network Configuration settings in System Preferences
Network - that you have all the correct settings in your ISP's
DNS numbers.

Restart your Modem/Router.

How are you connecting to the internet, wire or wireless
connection? I imagine wireless.

What Modem/Router?

Cheers,
Ronni

Martin

Just an idea

In your system preferences Click on Network

In the TCP/IP section look for Configure IPv6 Click
on Configure IPv6 so a window appears ..

The window probably shows Configure IPv6
Automatically ! ?

If so click on the Automatically and drag down to the OFF
which will appear after clicking

This should make IPv6 off .

Click OK

Then click Apply Now located at the bottom of the Network window

Now try your banking problem

Bob

Note : you may need initially to click the lock at the bottom
and authenticate

Re: Ethermax Ethernet Docking Station and BigPond Next G

2008-10-01 Thread Touchwood

Hi Andrew

Thanks for your info. (I believe I may have spoken with you at
the end of last year when I was
enquiring about BIgPond NextG experiences, but I no longer have the
relevant emails)

I hear the resignation in your voicelike you, I had no choice but
to use BigPond Wireless NextG

if I wanted to access Broadband.

At least we got a price reduction in the plans at the end of August
(though extra usage increased to 0.25c/MB)
but, compared to ADSL users, we are still getting taken to the
cleaners. ( I am currently on the $60 for 1 GB plan)

I may go with the Ethermax...but Gary has just emailed me off list
with a suggestion that the Aiport Extreme Base Station
might be an alternative...though I have no idea if it will work in
the same way as the Ethermax.

I will investigate furtherthanks again

I find that the modem itself needs to be rebooted from time to time

To summarise, if you are keen to use an outrageously expensive,

Telstra, then go for it. Unfortunately there was no other option

Hi

All I want to do is set up a network that uses my existing standard

Ethermax to Internet share and printer share between two Macs (a G3
iBook G5 iMac).

The BigPond USB modem will not allow me to use the inbuilt Internet
sharing of the Mac OS and also prevents networking for Printer
Sharing.

If I want to Network my computers (via hub Cables) I have to
physically disconnect the Modem. (which invariably plays up the next
time I
reconnect it for use)

Maxon website suggests the Ethermax Docking Station is the
answer...I've researched around some relevant forums...info/
experiences seem a little mixed.

Just like some thoughts from Mac users before I fork out the $299.00.

Thanks for reading

Hi Steven

I'm sorry about the late fee you incurred. I use iCal Alarms all the
time to remind me to pay my Credit Card and other Accounts, it has not
let me down.

I set up different alarms, some to 'Email me 29 hours before'
'Message with Sound 15mins before' etc, so far they always arrived on
the time set.

So I don't know why your alarm didn't work?

iCal 3.0.5 / Mail 3.5 / Mac OSX 10.5.5

Neil,

I fiddled around with the Airport extreme base station, but found it a pain
with the USB modem. I now use the ethermax for DHCP and the base station to
handle wireless clients. Whichever way you go, give me a hoy off list if you
