Re: [WISPA] Witching hour looms for 5.3 GHz - Can't buyanymoreaftertomorrow

2007-07-19 Thread Jeromie Reeves

$1500 aps sure would hurt me. I do complete relays for less then $500
as it is (legal too!)
In a few months you will be able ot roam 100% (or very close to it) my
town on my service. I would love to have 5.3/5.4 for my short hops.
Right now 2.4 does fine but I know that will not always be the case
(even if not from interference then because I want to free it up for
more roaming capacity)

On 7/19/07, Tom DeReggi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Be careful what you say. Yes we need cheap APs. The reason is for subscriber
relay gear (2 radios, one for subscriber, one for rebroadcast AP.)
As long as the mentality is APs are expensive, there will never be a cheap
Relay enbaled subscriber unit (which includes an AP secondary component).

The trend with new spectrum (5.4Ghz) will be how to turn every subscriber
into an opportunity to serve another.

Rumor has it that Trango is just waiting FCC approval for a new triband

$350+

That makes sense.

FoxAtlas-
The good news for us is it has not been a big problem for us because we
really haven't had many failed units.

I'm surprised how long they have lasted working in the field.
We keep the cases of failed ones, befor ehitting the trash bin, in case the
clips break off one in the field.

Not that we have many units that fail.

I'm suspecting it will be more of a problem as time goes on. It would be
nice to find a $100 repair cost, to help keep these things another 5 year in
the air :-)

Travis, if it was a very common problem with all your units and you know
what needs to be replaced, there's probably a company near you that does
board component replacements.

I know a guy who owned a company that did just this.

If there is a lot of units and it's all the same parts you could get
them repaired for next to nothing on a per unit basis.

You have to find the company in your area that does board component
replacements.

Rumor has it that Trango is just waiting FCC approval for a new triband
5ghz AP (5.3ghz, 5.4ghz and 5.8ghz). It will also have more horsepower
than the current 5830, but still be backward compatible with existing
SU's. Same 10Mbps bandwidth limit however.

Travis: Isn't the other factor also that you have to
buy some brands in "100 bundle pack/500 bundle " and
therefore it is not as simple as just "replace with
new because its cheaper than repairing"??

Regarding unrepairable Atlas and Fox, I think you can
get some money at electronic recycler in your areas.
We have several programs here in Silicon Valley.

[WISPA] RE: Witching hour looms for 5.3 GHz - Can't buy any more aftertomorrow

2007-07-19 Thread Patrick Leary
[sorry for the cross posting, but the points are worth being widely
distributed]

Paul,
Alvarion's interpretation is the same as Trango's, such that IF you as
an operator have the units in your inventory, then you can put them up
without too much worry (though the FCC has not said this is okay or not
okay, it is a plausible and reasonable conclusion). But resellers cannot
sell existing stock; they will have to do a stock rotation back to the
vendor.

The point about grandfathered nature of deployed units is also correct,
though it mean you CANNOT buy legacy CPE to populate existing sectors --
AUs that are up now cannot get more subscribers UNLESS the new units
comply with the new DFS2 requirement (unless you as an operator have
them on YOUR shelf already).

All in all, it makes things a bit messy for a bit, but users of major
vendor's products don't have too much to fear. I suspect the hardest hit
will be those using systems whose vendor R&D teams are not sophisticated
enough to deal with the issue; those vendors will have to wait for their
chip supplier to solve the challenge for them.

I can't speak for backward compatibility of most of the vendors, but it
looks like Alvarion BreezeACCESS VL (and I believe Motorola Canopy also)
users will have backward compatible.

You have real issues Brad.

The simple point is that the rule change is upon us. Debating whether or
not is good is a pointless endeavor -- this has been known for YEARS and
the time to debate the rule itself has long past. If you wish to waste
your breath trying to provoke an argument, go for it, but I won't be
baited into it.

I could swear I detect a slight jubilation in your tone Patrick. Is
this
rule change really in the best interest of the UL fixed wireless
operator?

What better excuse could Alvarion ask for in not offering an UL dual or
tri-band product? Now you are comfortably able to hang your hat on the
FCC
mantel...well done!

This rule change does come as a disappointment to many Trango operators.
The ability to flip between 5.3GHz and 5.8GHz in V or H polarity on the
fly
will be sorely missed.

Sure has been quiet on the Trango front...hopefully they have a new dual
or
tri-band product with trusty dual polarity undergoing FCC certification.

Best,

Brad

Well folks, after all this time the July 20, 2007 deadline is now upon
us. Effective tomorrow it is illegal for all vendors to sell legacy 5.3
GHz into the U.S. Everyone must now wait for the FCC certifications to
come for the new gear that vendors will be building. The rules require
that 5.3 GHz gear must now conform to the same DFS2 requirements as
incoming 5.4 GHz product. I trust most of you are aware of this.

Tom - I worked with field technicians, Call Centers
and I trained Call Centers in previous life and agree
with you. I think it is also a training issue and I.T.
issue. I recall my Call Center/RMA standard operating
procedures (SOPs) required just what you said - the
more detail the better in RMA. But the actual issue
was my Call Center staff didn't have enough space in
the paperwork to write in more detail, or I didn't
provide them enough training.

There is a group that studies this:

Re: [WISPA] Sprint Nextel and Clearwire

2007-07-19 Thread Tom DeReggi
Interesting to note that Clearwire in many cases uses Licensed Dragon wave
for backhaul, and Sprint jsut recently purchased large amounts of Dragonwave
stock (or something like that), and both have licensed 2.5Ghz. I think this
was probably a good move for Sprint and Clearwire, and it looks like they
are aligning to be a company that is ownerous toall components required to
deliver the end solution, "gear", "spectrum", and "tower sites", and "
company".

What will be interesting to see is whether Clearwire's debt and operating
costs, combined with Sprint's declining market share of cell phone and
wireline data services, will burry the joint venture, even with all the
synergies that exists, for them to work togeather. Personally, I think it
was a smart move on both company's part to work togeather, to reduce their
competition. With them being the only two real offerers of potential
licensed Wimax networks, it should help their stock value escalate.

Subject: [WISPA] Sprint Nextel and Clearwire

Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have announced that they will jointly
construct their WiMAX networks and eventually sell the services jointly
under one brand. The deal still needs to gain approval by the Department
of Justice and the FCC because the companies plan on exchanging selected
2.5 GHz spectrum license assignments.

Under the network build-out plan, Sprint Nextel will focus its efforts
primarily on geographic areas covering approximately 185 million people,
including 75 percent of the people located in the 50 largest markets,
while Clearwire will focus on areas covering approximately 115 million
people. Initially, the two companies expect to build out network coverage
to approximately 100 million people by the end of 2008, with seamless
roaming enabled between the deployed areas.

"Our joint efforts will result in customers benefiting from a more
extensive network, operating sooner and using our respective spectrum more
efficiently than either company could have on its own," said Clearwire
Chief Executive Officer Ben Wolff.

The companies will sell services under one brand and Clearwire will sell
subscriptions to the service at Sprint locations within Clearwire's
territories. Sprint plans to provide dual-mode (CDMA-WiMAX) services
nationwide to its customers both on its own and Clearwire's portion of the
WiMAX networks.

Re: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-19 Thread Tom DeReggi

Jack,

I respect you for accepting repair jobs, where you do not charge for
unrepaired items. There is a real cost to the intial troubleshooting.

I think its great to have one more option for possible repair.

I'll share some personal insight. This is not directed at ezlink, but al
lreapir centers in general. One of the biggest risks in using repaired goods
is the cost to isntall the radio far exceeds the cost of the repair, often
far greater than the cost of a new radio. So if a board comes back not
properly repaired, but stated as repaired, its costly to the client, and not
worth the client considering future repairs, if the track record is not
consistent. Further, if a repair comes back stated as unrepaired, the
client wants to know for sure whether that is a product that needs to be
thrown in the trash or resend out to a more competent or more willing repair
centers. For example, how does the client know that the board was truly
blown versus a reapir center that jsut felt it wasn;t cost effective to
investigate whether it was repairable, based on the tools and resources he
had? These two problems are the two problems that frustrate clients. Whats
ironic is that there is an easilly solution to this problem, and its called
"documenting summary of work". I have found that client want to and can
trust their repair vendors, and all that is needed is a communication
process that shows the reapir center did their best and what they did. The
more detailed the repair troubleshooting log is, the more confortable the
client feels. For example, if a client reports a problem such as "locks up
when hot", if the vendor responds, "put heat gun on board for 30 minutes, no
lockup occurred" or "replaced FAN, no lockup for 30 minutes", it would
infer that the repair center heard the reported problem accurately, and
attempted to investigate the actual problem. Or "Ethernet Chipset fried to
a crisp, no repair possible", would let a client know clearly why its not
repairable from the specific repair center. The client could then choose to
send it to a repair center that advertised "chipset level repairs possible".
These are just examples. But what I hate to see, is jsut get a radio back
that says "repaired" or "not repaired" with little detail, because it does
not give me that cosy feeling of an answer that I can rely on.

I do not know ezlink's policies and proceedures, but I'd be interesting in
hearing how Ezlink handles it.

Re: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-19 Thread Tom DeReggi
Actually, if they come back repaired... Thats a pretty good price,
considering from a manufactuer, that has the tools and knowledge to verify a
proper repair.
Atleast, if we are talking about the higher cost radios 900, 5830, APs,
etc

If you are referring to Fox Atlas CPEs, that sell for $200 new, I'd agree a
lower priced alternative would be needed to justify repairing.

But is that realistic to find, (for specialize proprietary radio equipment)?

[WISPA] Sprint Nextel and Clearwire

2007-07-19 Thread Frank Muto
Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have announced that they will jointly construct
their WiMAX networks and eventually sell the services jointly under one
brand. The deal still needs to gain approval by the Department of Justice
and the FCC because the companies plan on exchanging selected 2.5 GHz
spectrum license assignments.

Under the network build-out plan, Sprint Nextel will focus its efforts
primarily on geographic areas covering approximately 185 million people,
including 75 percent of the people located in the 50 largest markets, while
Clearwire will focus on areas covering approximately 115 million people.
Initially, the two companies expect to build out network coverage to
approximately 100 million people by the end of 2008, with seamless roaming
enabled between the deployed areas.

"Our joint efforts will result in customers benefiting from a more extensive
network, operating sooner and using our respective spectrum more efficiently
than either company could have on its own," said Clearwire Chief Executive
Officer Ben Wolff.

2007-07-19 Thread Felix A. Lopez
Jack: In general, there are less troubleshooter/radio
repairman training classes and vocational programs in
the public school system. I had a discussion about
this with my 82 year old buddy who is an old Motorola
radioman and ARRL member. Part of this stems from
the "buy it and chuck it and replace it with new"
mentatlity. Many components in seperate are more
expansive then the whole. I have an old Canopy 5.7
radio in my workshop and I think I'm going to just
pull it apart and look at it to learn. But where does
one "buy an ethernet femaale jack"? just one.

[WISPA] Dead RF Canopy 900APC.

2007-07-19 Thread Scottie Arnett
Hello Lists,

I have a 900 Canopy APC that the RF seems to be damaged in. I can connect to
it if I get within 10 feet of it, LOL, with a RSSI of about 1200. And this
is with a 10 dB antenna on the AP and a 14dB antenna on the SM. I have
checked everything I can think of, i.e. changed pigtails, made sure power
level was at 26, reloaded firmware, default reset, different antennas.
Anyone have any ideas?

If it is dead, I know there are some repair places lurking on here...but do
any of you repair the RF side?

I also have a 900 SMC that has about the same symptoms. It will show an RSSI
of 0 and bounce up to 233. It will not connect to any AP that is even within
2 feet of it. I have tried all the above with it too.

Where is the best place to get Ethernet chips replaced in these modules? I
see that Electrocomm shows it for $75, I called and they said that FDDI did
it for them, to just call them direct. Is that about the going rate to
replace these Ethernet chips?

TIA for any suggestions

Sincerely,
Scottie Arnett

RE: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-19 Thread Larry A Weidig
I cannot comment about Trango, but we have used them in the past
for Alvarion gear. Our results have been a large number returned no
repair (which we were not charged for), but a large number of the
"repaired" radios failing after being put back in service. Most of the
time for the exact issue they were sent in for.
This of course causes a number of issues. First, the actual
repair costs are much higher (usually keeps 50% of the radios repaired).
Second, you have a frustrated customer with a broken radio. Finally, you
have a truck roll to repair.
Unfortunately for us at this point we are just discarding radios
and writing them off as there does not seem to be a good repair option
we have found. This is my personal experiences.

I agree that fiber and wireless would circumvent the issue entirely.

The telco and cableco run copper from building to building.

Your tech did state that one was repaired, when in fact it was not.

I guess my real issue was the fact that it took over a month before any one

Jack, we need a company like yours especially when Trango wants outrageous
money for repair. It would just be nice if your company was a little more

When you send us something that has been destroyed, its rather difficult to

I am working with another company that is training on the repair, may have

Travis,

I have never sent him anything to repair for me, but I have sold him lots
of the old Alvarion 3mbps stuff from some other ISP buyouts. They seemed to
be nice folks and have been at it for a long time.

I agree that fiber and wireless would circumvent the issue entirely.

The telco and cableco run copper from building to building.

Do not connect buildings with copper cable, unless they are bonded to the
same single point ground system.. This is what wireless and fiber are for.

What are those of you that are connecting different buildings together
with

cat 5\6 cable doing WRT grounding? Aren't all grounding systems with
anything conductive linking them supposed to be bonded together so that
the

equipment doesn't become the path to ground? Is this as simple as placing
surge protectors on both sides or is it more complicated such as running
some 4 gauge copper alongside the cable?

Same with an RG-6 cable.
