$1500 aps sure would hurt me. I do complete relays for less then $500 as it is (legal too!) In a few months you will be able ot roam 100% (or very close to it) my town on my service. I would love to have 5.3/5.4 for my short hops. Right now 2.4 does fine but I know that will not always be the case (even if not from interference then because I want to free it up for more roaming capacity) On 7/19/07, Tom DeReggi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >Do we really need super cheap APs? Re: [WISPA] trango repairs
$350+ That makes sense. FoxAtlas- The good news for us is it has not been a big problem for us because we really haven't had many failed units. I'm surprised how long they have lasted working in the field. We keep the cases of failed ones, befor ehitting the trash bin, in case the clips break off one in the field. Not that we have many units that fail. I'm suspecting it will be more of a problem as time goes on. It would be nice to find a $100 repair cost, to help keep these things another 5 year in the air :-) Tom DeReggi RapidDSL & Wireless, Inc IntAirNet- Fixed Wireless Broadband - Original Message - From: "Travis Johnson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "WISPA General List" Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2007 8:42 PM Subject: Re: [WISPA] trango repairs I'm talking mainly about radios we pay around $350 each for brand new at $200 for repair, we have just been piling them on a shelf... but if we could find someone to fix them for $100, it would be worth it. Re: [WISPA] trango repairs
Travis, if it was a very common problem with all your units and you know what needs to be replaced, there's probably a company near you that does board component replacements. I know a guy who owned a company that did just this. If there is a lot of units and it's all the same parts you could get them repaired for next to nothing on a per unit basis. You have to find the company in your area that does board component replacements. I'm talking mainly about radios we pay around $350 each for brand new at $200 for repair, we have just been piling them on a shelf... but if we could find someone to fix them for $100, it would be worth it. The FOX and Atlas units we just throw in the garbage. :( Travis Microserv Tom DeReggi wrote: Actually, if they come back repaired... Atleast, if we are talking about the higher cost radios 900, 5830, APs, etc If you are referring to Fox Atlas CPEs, that sell for $200 new, I'd agree a lower priced alternative would be needed to justify repairing. [WISPA] RE: Witching hour looms for 5.3 GHz - Can't buy any more aftertomorrow
[sorry for the cross posting, but the points are worth being widely distributed] Paul, Alvarion's interpretation is the same as Trango's, such that IF you as an operator have the units in your inventory, then you can put them up without too much worry (though the FCC has not said this is okay or not okay, it is a plausible and reasonable conclusion). But resellers cannot sell existing stock; they will have to do a stock rotation back to the vendor. The point about grandfathered nature of deployed units is also correct, though it mean you CANNOT buy legacy CPE to populate existing sectors -- AUs that are up now cannot get more subscribers UNLESS the new units comply with the new DFS2 requirement (unless you as an operator have them on YOUR shelf already). All in all, it makes things a bit messy for a bit, but users of major vendor's products don't have too much to fear. I suspect the hardest hit will be those using systems whose vendor R&D teams are not sophisticated enough to deal with the issue; those vendors will have to wait for their chip supplier to solve the challenge for them. I can't speak for backward compatibility of most of the vendors, but it looks like Alvarion BreezeACCESS VL (and I believe Motorola Canopy also) users will have backward compatible. Re: [WISPA] trango repairs
Tom - I worked with field technicians, Call Centers and I trained Call Centers in previous life and agree with you. I think it is also a training issue and I.T. issue. I recall my Call Center/RMA standard operating procedures (SOPs) required just what you said - the more detail the better in RMA. But the actual issue was my Call Center staff didn't have enough space in the paperwork to write in more detail, or I didn't provide them enough training. There is a group that studies this: http://www.ciac-cert.org/index.cfm/AboutCIAC Felix --- Tom DeReggi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Jack, > > I respect you for accepting repair jobs, where you > do not charge for > unrepaired items. Re: [WISPA] Sprint Nextel and Clearwire
Interesting to note that Clearwire in many cases uses Licensed Dragon wave for backhaul, and Sprint jsut recently purchased large amounts of Dragonwave stock (or something like that), and both have licensed 2.5Ghz. I think this was probably a good move for Sprint and Clearwire, and it looks like they are aligning to be a company that is ownerous toall components required to deliver the end solution, "gear", "spectrum", and "tower sites", and " company". What will be interesting to see is whether Clearwire's debt and operating costs, combined with Sprint's declining market share of cell phone and wireline data services, will burry the joint venture, even with all the synergies that exists, for them to work togeather. Personally, I think it was a smart move on both company's part to work togeather, to reduce their competition. With them being the only two real offerers of potential licensed Wimax networks, it should help their stock value escalate. Re: [WISPA] trango repairs
Jack, I respect you for accepting repair jobs, where you do not charge for unrepaired items. There is a real cost to the intial troubleshooting. I think its great to have one more option for possible repair. I'll share some personal insight. This is not directed at ezlink, but al lreapir centers in general. One of the biggest risks in using repaired goods is the cost to isntall the radio far exceeds the cost of the repair, often far greater than the cost of a new radio. So if a board comes back not properly repaired, but stated as repaired, its costly to the client, and not worth the client considering future repairs, if the track record is not consistent. Further, if a repair comes back stated as unrepaired, the client wants to know for sure whether that is a product that needs to be thrown in the trash or resend out to a more competent or more willing repair centers. For example, how does the client know that the board was truly blown versus a reapir center that jsut felt it wasn;t cost effective to investigate whether it was repairable, based on the tools and resources he had? These two problems are the two problems that frustrate clients. Whats ironic is that there is an easilly solution to this problem, and its called "documenting summary of work". I have found that client want to and can trust their repair vendors, and all that is needed is a communication process that shows the reapir center did their best and what they did. The more detailed the repair troubleshooting log is, the more confortable the client feels. For example, if a client reports a problem such as "locks up when hot", if the vendor responds, "put heat gun on board for 30 minutes, no lockup occurred" or "replaced FAN, no lockup for 30 minutes", it would infer that the repair center heard the reported problem accurately, and attempted to investigate the actual problem. Or "Ethernet Chipset fried to a crisp, no repair possible", would let a client know clearly why its not repairable from the specific repair center. The client could then choose to send it to a repair center that advertised "chipset level repairs possible". These are just examples. But what I hate to see, is jsut get a radio back that says "repaired" or "not repaired" with little detail, because it does not give me that cosy feeling of an answer that I can rely on. I do not know ezlink's policies and proceedures, but I'd be interesting in hearing how Ezlink handles it. Re: [WISPA] trango repairs
Actually, if they come back repaired... Thats a pretty good price, considering from a manufactuer, that has the tools and knowledge to verify a proper repair. Atleast, if we are talking about the higher cost radios 900, 5830, APs, etc If you are referring to Fox Atlas CPEs, that sell for $200 new, I'd agree a lower priced alternative would be needed to justify repairing. But is that realistic to find, (for specialize proprietary radio equipment)? RE: [WISPA] trango repairs
Jack: In general, there are less troubleshooter/radio repairman training classes and vocational programs in the public school system. I had a discussion about this with my 82 year old buddy who is an old Motorola radioman and ARRL member. Part of this stems from the "buy it and chuck it and replace it with new" mentatlity. Many components in seperate are more expansive then the whole. I have an old Canopy 5.7 radio in my workshop and I think I'm going to just pull it apart and look at it to learn. But where does one "buy an ethernet femaale jack"? just one. [WISPA] Dead RF Canopy 900APC.
Hello Lists, I have a 900 Canopy APC that the RF seems to be damaged in. I can connect to it if I get within 10 feet of it, LOL, with a RSSI of about 1200. And this is with a 10 dB antenna on the AP and a 14dB antenna on the SM. I have checked everything I can think of, i.e. changed pigtails, made sure power level was at 26, reloaded firmware, default reset, different antennas. Anyone have any ideas? If it is dead, I know there are some repair places lurking on here...but do any of you repair the RF side? I also have a 900 SMC that has about the same symptoms. It will show an RSSI of 0 and bounce up to 233. It will not connect to any AP that is even within 2 feet of it. I have tried all the above with it too. Where is the best place to get Ethernet chips replaced in these modules? I see that Electrocomm shows it for $75, I called and they said that FDDI did it for them, to just call them direct. Is that about the going rate to replace these Ethernet chips? TIA for any suggestions Sincerely, Scottie Arnett President Info-ed, Inc. 615-699-3049 931-243-2101 -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. RE: [WISPA] trango repairs
I cannot comment about Trango, but we have used them in the past for Alvarion gear. Our results have been a large number returned no repair (which we were not charged for), but a large number of the "repaired" radios failing after being put back in service. Most of the time for the exact issue they were sent in for. This of course causes a number of issues. First, the actual repair costs are much higher (usually keeps 50% of the radios repaired). Second, you have a frustrated customer with a broken radio. Finally, you have a truck roll to repair. Unfortunately for us at this point we are just discarding radios and writing them off as there does not seem to be a good repair option we have found. This is my personal experiences. I am working with another company that is training on the repair, may have another option soon. They seemed to be nice folks and have been at it for a long time. 1-866-439-5469 http://store.ezlinx.net/ Mac -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Travis Johnson Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2007 8:57 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; WISPA General List Subject: [WISPA] trango repairs Hi, Is there anyone doing Trango repairs for a reasonable rate? [WISPA] Grounding
What are those of you that are connecting different buildings together with cat 5\6 cable doing WRT grounding? Aren't all grounding systems with anything conductive linking them supposed to be bonded together so that the equipment doesn't become the path to ground? Is this as simple as placing surge protectors on both sides or is it more complicated such as running some 4 gauge copper alongside the cable? Same with an RG-6 cable. - Mike Hammett Intelligent Computing Solutions http://www.ics-il.com Would you like to see your advertisement here?
