I havn't subscribed to Stereophile in about 10 years mainly because most
of what they review is way above my price range. I'll occasionally
browse through a copy at the bookstore if something catches my eye in
the index. I've been blessed with having grown up through a time when

I'm not too certain it matters as I thought that virtually the only
difference between the SB2 and the SB3 was the box.

Seriously... I'm not being cynical. I've never seen one.
They have done several negative reviews in 06. Granted, not many.
One was a speaker. They will say things like..can't recommend this
The SB+ was based on the SB2, but is now based on the SB3. The SB2
SB3 are pretty similar anyway. The SB+ has been around since December
2005, long before the Transporter.
There are a few people who have heard both the SB+ and the Transporter.
So far they all prefer the SB+, however, I'm very

Thanks for your reply Patrick, and the additional info. I wish there
were some way to A/B the two, but we all know A/B tests are silly
anyway! Right now, I am enjoying my normal SB3 very much, but I use
Dac's. I love all the modding that goes on with these things, keep it

A/B, as far as I know, is short for comparing A to B. It doesn't
imply anything about for how long, blind or not, etc.
How can that be silly? How else can you possibly differentiate between
two options?

I've had my SB3 for approximately one month now, and I'm loving it.
However, I can hear an odd whistle in the right channel. I've done a
bit of cable/port/source swapping and it would appear to be caused by
the Squeezebox. The whistle's also on the headphone output.
About the noise:

You could try dimming the display - is the sound correlated with the
brightness setting?
Another thing is to move the SB around while listening with headphones.
Does the sound change depending on where the SB is located?

Bingo! A shiny pint for the man in lead boots and concrete trilby!
Thanks very much -- it was the display. Turning it off kills the noise.
I think I'll probably make the display
These two effects - amp clipping and digital clipping - really have
little or nothing to do with each other. Amp clipping in an analogue
phenomenon that occurs when the amp can't sustain the demand on it. It
has nothng to do with whether or not the original digital signal was
clipped; it just

Can't contribute to the SB+ vs Transporter debate since I have never

Well yeah if the track was mastered with clipping in it, gaining it down
wouldn't do anything. However what is the differential in power between
a quiet track and a loud track played at the same perceived SPL with
respect to the amplifier?

My reason for keeping the cue files is to exactly recreate the CDs
should I ever need to. The cue sheet is a simple text file that keeps
the gap information. Just look at the EAC menus, you'll quickly find
the one for generating the cue file.
I always rip CDs so each track is ripped as an

I have paid attention to mains power with a very decent four way gang

Thanks, MC. Just what I need to know. I will start saving .cue sheets

There is an enhancement request filed at http://bugs.slimdevices.com for

So anyway, on the SB+, two questions:
1 - How much is it? Website seems silent on this.
2 - Do you (Patrick?) have a nice 'borrow it for a fortnight' deal,
card secured of course? Adding a 'oh and feel free to test it against
this Transporter that you can also borrow on the same terms' deal
Interesting idea, a no risk [not the Bel Canto kind] trial for the
SB+. Course I am in the States so probably this couldn't be worked out,
but I would love to audition this against my SB3/Electrocompaniet DAC or
Benchmark DAC. Anybody in the States willing to loan out a unit? I will
offer some

Hey, I have an idea.
Patrick once mentioned trying the SB+ here in the US.
maybe we could form a group audition in the states. We could compile a
list of our homes to audition the SB+ , each person gets a week or two
or three (whatever we decide on ) and then sends it to the next person.
