When I did mine I was putting in a new rear window also. I had the glass man come out and pull the old one out. With the rear glass out it was much easier to work on the rear package shelf. When I had the shelf in place he came back and set the window. Worked out good. Also if you have

Its a package tray. Its a piece of colored cardboard more or less. It also has a piece of foam, with a piece of material on the edge, to match your interior. Any Chevelle parts store should have these

Craig I had the same problem with the package tray being cut out by the previous owner My fix was to make plates out of 16 ga steel with the right speaker cut outs but big enough to cover the entire bad area. I riveted them in place from underneath so you don't see the rivets sticking down from
