I've noticed that when I play quake2 in xfce, that it briefly freezes every
once in a while. This does not happen if I'm using Gnome, or Ion3. Anyone
else noticed this? I'm using Etch, on a Pentium III with 450 MHz, and 384 MB
ram.

Well, if it ain't broke, why fix it? I happen to be running Quake 3
without a hitch on top of XFree86, so it probably has to do with your
nvidia drivers.

Whenever I try to initialize Quake 2, it says it can't find ref_softx.so.
It's right there in the directory with the binary. I copied all the libraries
to /lib and /usr/lib and even usr/local/lib, but it won't work. I copied
quake2.conf to etc/ and made a symlink to pak0.

This looks pretty much like what I get starting quake. The thing I have to
look out for is starting it in kde. Kde has artsd running and locks the sound
card until it times out. Pause/stop the artsd and it should work a little
faster.

This morning I have been trying to get quake-svga running, and am getting this
error message:
SVGAlib wrapper: unable to open default visual
I have been looking around the list archives and the web but cannot find
any info on how to fix this error, anyone have any suggestions
here's what mine spits out...

Well, like I said, there aren't any other GL stuffs ( other than the
NVidia stuffs that is) on my box. I was running Quake 3 fine and dandy (and
everything else too) with Woody and the NVidia stuffs before. Then, since
