I would think that this kind of illumination device (or whatever you might call it) could have many uses in those days. I have a replica of a lacemakers light and found the concept amazing :-) Of course it works, or they would have found something better, but I was just amazed when I used it.

You could try looking at http://www.nationalexpress.com/ which, I think, is the only bus system which is nationwide. You should be able to get from Wymondham to Exeter (which isn't far from Honiton), but I don't think you'd be able to get there and back in a day. Other than that it would be trains
