Hey Kevin  The Rabbit from 75 to 84 used several different alternators made by bosch, motorola and valeo, I think for the 78 you may only have a couple of choices depending on the engine, if 1.5 or 1.6.  I think for most of them it just depends on the correct pully length for belt alignment

Success has come. I finally fashioned a curved piece out of a paperclip that I managed to slide under the three clips on one side of the piece holding the rod, and the holder slid out about an inch. I could then get the rod out. Not fun, but with the proper created tool it worked well. Score one
