As described, the job was too easy. The VR seemed to be just fine. I
noticed that the bail was off, it holds the plug into the back of the
alternator, so I pulled the plug out and cleaned the contacts up with
some Radio Shack contact cleaner. Rein
d probably some
other contributors around the car.

If the battery has a short inside, yes it could happen.

Now that I look at what I wrote, I think I've only done that job on the 300E,
so I can't swear to the alternator on the diesel being in the same place, but
it probably i
y helps.

The latter is a trivial job on a 124 if you can raise it up a foot or
so with ramps or stands. Just
It might be. My 240D went through many (4 or 5) alternators. Then I replaced
the battery and it hasn't had an alternator for 4 or 5 years...

Maybe...
In my experience it means the alternator is toast. I went through that many
many times with my 240D before getting a good McParts one.
Learn from my mistakes, don't buy a McParts alternator...
Voltage regulator is worth a shot though.

Is this most likely the voltage regulator?
Sounds suspiciously like short brushes to me.
Same fix: new regulator/brush pack.

All,
In the last few weeks, on my '87 300TD with 317k miles, my alternator
light has started to glow faintly at times, usually right after
starting. Yesterday it even briefly came on twice while I was driving
to work.
Is this most likely the voltage regulator? Is the proper test to
measure volt
