I'm a total Linux and Ubuntu noob, but keen to get into it. I have this
issue on my 2400. How do I get into the grub menu item to disable the
splash screen. Please remember I'm a total noob so pretty much need hand
holding (I don't even know what a grub menu IS yet), but you will be

Upgrading from Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10 RC1 using the Adept instructions on
kubuntu wiki gave the same problem for me.
Adept version upgrader hung at libslang install (I think this is more to do
with it being the package to install after debconf?)
I ended up having to kill all the adept and apt p

Can confirm this, on upgrade from 7.04 (2.6.20-16) to 7.10RC the package
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-14-386 was not included in the upgrade

2. Start a few applications
3. Save the session
4. log out.
5. log in
6. /usr/lib/gnome-keyring/gnome-keyring-ask will pop-up as
l configuration using, perhaps individually, or perhaps in
some combination:
/etc/modprobe.d/options
a line like
options 3c59x enable_wol=1
or
sudo ethtool eth0

Tedious and confusing, eh? Trial and error may help. All thi

Some automatic updates just came in. Snaptic still shows
gnome-control-center 1:2.17.91-0ubuntu2. I don't know
what the updates were, but the cpu usage has gone down
to 9-10 percent with the control center visible.

13 hours later I just finished yet another install. This one worked with
the network connected.
Maybe it was a transient. It took about 1 1/2 day to clear. This finally
working install was my 5th install with the network connected spread
over nearly 2 days.

boot time now. It also gets restarted if I ifdown eth0; ifup eth0. Still have

I found an old Aiptek camera and the Feisty alpha 3 recognized it immediately.
Camorama worked with it too. Camorama may not have a problem. It might be that
Feisty alpha 3 just doesn't recognize the old Logitech Quick cam.

Try removing "splash" from your kernel command line in grub (hit esc then "e"
to edit before boot). I did this and it fixed my issue reported here:

no graphical splash screen now.

On resume from suspend, no network devices are present. e.g running
ifconfig shows no device.
Running "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" does not bring the device
back, I have to killall NetworkManager then start NetworkManager again.

I can confirm exactly this on my system as follows, the commonality
seems to be the graphics driver and card.
This happened after a post Intrepid (stable) install update to my
system, which is running Kubuntu 8.10 / KDE 4.1.3, the base install of
Intrepid did not have this problem (Maybe the Nvidi

Alright, seeing as I've sort of been able to narrow down where the
problem is, and since it has been confirmed in Hardy and Intrepid by
dAF2000 and I, I've decided to nominate it in Hardy, Intrepid, and
Jaunty. Hope to see progress soon!

It looks like the cause is that it's running into your user limit of (by
default) 1024 files open at a time. It's possible that another
application you're running is leaving file handles open, or legitimately
using a lot (torrent clients are notorious for this.) You can increase

actually, I'm not sure if sdparm does anything at all. What's got me is
that KDE4 doesn't provide feedback that a CD disk has been inserted in
the "recently plugged devices" widget, although it does show DVD discs.
The mount point is also empty but audiocd:/ in konquerer shows the disk.

miffed if it doesn't work as I didn't ask for it but it seems that there
is no firmware available for v4l-dvb.

The magick wand problem has been around for quite a while when trying to
get Imagick running with PHP5.
The trick was to install the package libmagick9-dev -- not sure how
"compatible" that is with libmagick10 but it works, it seems to match
