This might sound off-the-wall, but you could do a lot worse than pick an iPhone. The GPS in it works really very well, compass and all. In terms of ruggedness, one of my staff members dropped his iPhone from a tower 110' up. Stupid, I know, but he was trying to talk to the guy on the ground.
