I've always wondered if the vocal Rock to the Beat is a sample or not.
I've always thought it sounds like Kim Gordon (!)

I'll also throw in some praise for Triangle of Love, that vocal is so raw
its beautiful. Someone mentioned New Order and that's what I thought the
first time I heard Triangle. So I doubt this is just a coincidence, how much
influence did New Order have in the D? Technique remains as one of my
favourite albums of all time. Is this a go read Techno Rebels question?

both Macho Peter Jacques band are the same guy(Jacques Fred Petrus)
he actualy did realy well on the funkier front with Change(who

i agree about him starting the electronic Italian disco movement
(Fire Night Dance on Goody music is a timeless example) but
you had italian disco as early as 77 (DD Sound,La Bionda etc)

this was 101 - rock to the beat on Kaos. a newbeat remake that came

ppl that still think KS got it of them and not the other way round.
101 are the same ppl that are Lords Of Acid(major problem, moments

while everybody always picks on Tod Terry for stealing of KS ,these
were the real culprits, this record was also released in the us (can't

(313) Fwd: new release update / [ leaf ]

2000-02-29 Thread p i e t r o

I think someone (possibly me) brought this
release to our attention before. Well here's
the press-details from DEI.

SUSUMU YOKOTA
Magic Thread
BAY11CD / BAY11V (limited double LP)
UPC: 1753-32679-2

This is the sort of music you put on while you're doing the washing up
only to find it has taken control of your very soul Ben Thompson, Mojo, on
'Image 1983-1998'

Though probably better known for his funked-up techno and house (and jazz,
disco, drum bass, etc), Susumu Yokota received fulsome praise for the
Image 1983-1998 album released by The Leaf Label in September 1999. March
2000 sees the first release outside Japan of the now ridiculously scarce
Magic Thread album. The album was actually released in Japan before Image,
in a limited edition of just 500 copies on CD - the very first release on
Yokota's own Skintone label.

Magic Thread has a more electronic feel to it than Image, but is still
possessed of the plaintive melodies and haunting minimalist dynamics that
made Image such an unexpected treat.

After Ken Ishii, Yokota was the first techno artist to release music in
Europe (1992's Frankfurt-Tokyo Connection on Harthouse). Since then he has
enjoyed a prolific career as both a DJ and recording artist, working under
a host of pseudonyms, including 246, Ringo, Prism and Stevia. With his star
currently very much in the ascendant in his native Japan and continental
Europe, Yokota has begun to make an impression in the UK with his two most
recent albums on Sublime, 1998 and 1999. He has sold in excess of 90,000
records worldwide.

Due to popular demand, we are pleased to announce that the release of this
album will be complemented by the belated release of his last Skintone
album, Image 1983-1998, on limited edition 180g vinyl (BAY 9V).

Yokota's next release on Leaf will be a 4-track EP of deep house remixes
(more in keeping with his more familiar work on Sublime) of tracks taken
from Image, Magic Thread, and the third album in the Skintone series,
Sakura, which will also be released through Leaf later this year. He will
also contribute to the forthcoming Invisible Soundtracks : Macro 3, and is
to release his first ever mix album on Skintone, using only music from The
Leaf Label. We wait with baited breath...

CD: LP:

1. A1. Weave
2. A2. Reflux
3. A3. Unravel
4. B1. Circular
5. B2. Spool
6. C1. Potential
7. B3. Fiber
8. C2. Metabolic
9. D1. Stitch
10. D2. Blend
11. D3. Melt

Reviews of Image 1983-1998:

sexy and funny...Image's micro mood engineering is pure phantasmal pop, a
compelling tour of musical dustworlds. It makes you itch to hear whatever
ivory dice Yokota rolls out next Ian Penman, The Wire

SUSUMU YOKOTA
Image 1983 - 1998
BAY9V (limited edition 180g LP vinyl)

Susumu Yokota has been earning heaps of praise for his super-funky blend of
house, techno, disco, jazz and breaks, with releases on Japan's Sublime
Records, among others. [He] has more ideas in the space of one album than
most house producers have in their entire careers said Mixmag of 1999, his
most recent album on Sublime.

The Leaf Label has licensed Image 1983-1998, a collection of mainly
acoustic and oddly moving instrumental and vocal pieces from Yokota's own
Skintone label, a very personal project, representing a very different side
to his musical persona to the one you may already be aware of. There are
already another two Skintone albums ready to go, both in very different
styles. Yokota is proving increasingly difficult to pin down, which can
only be a good thing as far as we're concerned.

Already synonymous with dance music in Japan, Yokota first attracted
worldwide attention back in '92 with 'Frankfurt-Tokyo Connection' on
Harthouse. Since then he has enjoyed a prolific career as both a DJ and
recording artist, working under a host of pseudonyms, including 246, Ringo
and Prism (for Sublime and Reel Musiq) and Stevia (for NSCom). He has sold
in excess of 90,000 albums worldwide.

Yokota will be making DJ appearances in the UK in late October, in whatever
guise he sees fit. Keep your eyes peeled...

track listing:

1. Kaiten Mokuba
2. Tayutafu
3. Fukoro No Yume
4. Wani Natte
5. Sakashima
6. Morino Gakudan
7. Nisemono No Uta
8. Daremoshiranai Chiisanakuni
9. Kawano Hotorino Kinoshitade
10. Yumekui Kobito
11. Amai Niyoi
12. Enogu
13. Amanogawa

An astounding record that works it's way in through your lungs as much as
your ears. Instrumentals of the best kind with changing sounds (although
clouded keyboards and strings are primary) and real emotional weight pulled
around by virtue of the noise itself. Choose one for each song: choruses of
robot and human

Carl's last track, or even the first track of the guy after him.

- Does anyone know the name of that wicked house track that he played, which
had a really uplifting vocal which went I feel alright, the world is good!
(or something similar)?

- In response to the query about the Richie Hawtin Mary Anne Hobbs mix.
Richie did an hour mix on her show (she's a late night BBC Radio jock) in
December last year. It was all quite downtempo stuff.

- Was someone talking about a new Mills 12 the other day or did I dream it?

2000-02-29 Thread Cyclone Wehner

And BTW, what´s Kevin been up to lately ? Any projects ? Releases ?

He has been working on a new Inner City album.

This comes from an article I wrote late Decemeber:

A new Inner City album is nearly complete. The Inner City album is shaping
up fine. I'm close to 10 tracks. I'm trying to get it all finished before I
get to Australia, but I think I'm going to come back and finish a track or
two... It's probably a little different - actually, it's not 'probably',
it's a lot different than people would anticipate. It's gone away from dance
music in a certain capacity. You know, we've changed our styles. Saunderson
reveals that the Y2K incarnation of Inner City sounds more downtempo,
experimental and accommodates both live instruments and electronics. The
finished set should come out next year via PIAS (Play It Again Sam).

Peace

(313) Detroit Hip-Hop

2000-02-29 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Remember we were discussing Slum Village a few months back?

Carl Craig brought Slum Village in to remix People Make The World Go 'Round
- hopefully that will see light of day soon on Planet E.

Slum Village are a great new hip-hop outfit from Detroit. Think Native
Tongues style hip-hop for the 2K.

One of the members is JayDee who also forms part of The Ummah, A Tribe
Called Quest's production arm, along with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. (I
am not exactly sure of the status of this triumvirate since Tribe's demise?)

Slum Village's album, Fantastic Vol 2, has been widely bootlegged in the
underground but has never seen the light of day due to some bad
decision-making at Interscope.

Anyway, news is that the group have now left the label and the album will
now come out in the US via on Baraka/Goodvibe/Atomic Pop in May.

The album features input from Q-Tip, D'Angelo, Pete Rock, Busta Rhymes and
Kurupt.

Also I just got a promo copy of another hip-hop CD from a West Coast outfit
called The People Under The Stairs. The title is The Next Step and it's out
via Om Records. It's kinda on the ol' skool, 'conscious' hip-hop tip, very
funky and upbeat.

But to bring it back to 313, there are three tracks with input from one DJ
Assault. Would this be the same DJ Assault?

at Manchester’s Electric Chair the past two weekends.
Your enthusiasm reinforces our faith in the underground and our fans!

The label showcase, February 19th in Detroit, was incredible!
A diverse mix of people were in the house and they were ALL
gettin' down!
With the stage in the middle of the main room, like a boxing ring,
the three contenders controlling the crowd from different sides,
letting the audience really see what each artist was up to.

- The debut of Recloose’s truly inspiring live show did not
fail to impress the curious fans. Head-nodding soon turned into
rump-shakin'.
- Carl’s new Paperclip People show: Detroiters have
waited long enough for this, and they showed much love.
- Mike Clark’s DJ set opened and closed the main room with his usual
finesse, a journey through beat-down house Agent X style.
- Hannah's back room, was an orgy of soul, all night from 9 till 2.
An electric atmosphere, and an Innerzone Orchestra live footage film

of the upcoming Planet E releases was out cold!
Thank you!

PLANET E AT MIAMI WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE
MARCH 25-29, 2000

YES! YES! YES! To answer your questions, yes,
Planet E WILL be having another party at the
Miami Winter Music Conference this year.

Last year's party at Tantra was off the hook with industry, fans, and
celebrities alike grooving to Paperclip People live, Kevin
Saunderson, Gilles Peterson, Dego of 4 Hero,
Glenn Underground, Recloose, and more; people
were buzzing about this night for months afterward!

This year’s Planet E event will certainly top 1999’s! Look for a
special bulletin imminently announcing all the details on this
not-to-be missed throwdown!
