Re: (313) Mills newie on music man

2000-03-15 Thread Guilherme M.

Hi,

Jeff's new release has been at my hands.
I must say i was quite impressed w/ it:

The music is a colletion of his more complex, structured and melodic works.
A few classics, some new and previously unreleased songs make this a very
interesting record, which i hope to set up new standards for techno in the
2000s.

The design is about Color Significance which was the subject of a discussion
conducted in Jeff's Axis www.

The concept is about Jeff himself and his work as a musical artist; The CD
booklet contains an interview of Jeff with a psychologist.
In Jeff's word: To understand Axis and how it works is to understand who i
am and how i tick. Looking for the most thorough course and manner to create
this, the ideia came to me to have myself mentally examined, not by a music
journalist but by a professional, a doctor of human psyche, a Psychologist.
After months of searching for qualified psychologist that would have time
and interest in this project, we were able to find a well established
Chicago based agency of psychology that found this idea challenging as well
as compatible with their field. On december 27th 1999, through multiple
written examinations and aural interview sessions, the frame of Axis and
myself began to surface.

CD Tracklist: Jeff Mills: Life Like LP (Music Man)

Yantra (taken from AX-04)
Condor to Mallorca (taken from Waveforms Vol.3)
Global Factor *
Zenith (taken from From the 21st)
Nepta (taken from AX-15)
Babylon (Takem from PM-06)
Minnia (taken from X-103 on TResor)
Detached (taken from Mix it Up Vol.2) *
Systematic *
Cometh *
Solara (taken from From the 21st)
Avenger *
Eclipse (taken from AX-18)
With/Dove (With taken from AX-12 and Dove taken from From the 21st)

Tracklist 12 vinyl:

Condor to Mallorca
Time After Space *
Detached *
Black Avenger *

* previously unreleased tracks

Time After Space (on the 12) and Global Factor (on the CD) are the same
track. The same for Black Avenger (on the 12) and Avenger (on the 12).

The vinyl is supposed to be released on Axis as AX-21.
In summary, the music is great and accordingly to Jeff's word: Through
compiling 14 selected compositions from Axis Records, Purpose Maker,
Tomorrow catalogue that bare the most characer, it it an attempt to display
the soul of what I do and what has been created.

 My favourite 7s...

Innerzone Orchestra - At Les/Programmed (Talkin Loud)
 [limited album sampler-type-thing]

Arovane - Silicad/Occer (City Centre Offices)
[on clear vinyl, first release on this excellent Berlin/Manchester
 label]

Counterattack - We Can Elude Control (Counterattack)
[limited taster for the two CA 12s, one slamming club cut and a
 beautiful beatless piece]

Off the top of my head there's also a Dr Rockit (Herbert) 7 on Clear,
and various things on the Slut Smalls series from Jockey Slut...

can anyone think about any techno or electronica 7

there are lots of them
i think the earliest would be Juan 2 x 7 on deepspace
with alleys of your mind(don't have one but i know a couple
of ppl that do,it's very hard to find as you can imagine)
as for electronica, there are tons of'em,a few that comes to mind
are all the cabaret voltaire 7 esp the very electro vocodedseconds
too late ,400 - beat the devil(T Thorpe, moody boys ,klf) on
iluminated,Tuxedomoon - 59 to 1remix on Ralph(good times
bassline, rhythm box etc,, dj hell still throw this in electro sets)
Muslimgauze as EG Oblque Graph - tripitch , TG,Die Form,Coil,Yello,,
of course there are lots of australian ones too(Informatix - proximity
switch on au go go,would be a classic example ,Metronomes,
spencer spencer,systematics etc)
Kraftwerk off course had a lot of 7 too

are there any classic detroit 7s?

well in late 80's every bighit used to be on 7,so big time
good life as well as all the FFRR stuff, are all out there(call it
acid,back to the beat,French kiss,blackout etc)
Chicago Trax themselves had 4 or 5 out, these are very rare
according to Larry Sherman these were made specialy for dist
in da west coast the only one i've seen had Adonis-no way back
w Farmboy on the b,so i suppose they were all 2 hits on the
one 7,also Silk - Jack your body had a 7 rlse as i remember
a pub i used to go to that had it in the jukebox, same goes for
Pump up the volume
there's a 7 i have(thanx B D)that was given away with record miror
magazine, with Coldcut'ssweet tooth sonny - acid drops on one
side and a great 4th Floor Allstars mix by Frankie Mitchel(who
is better known as Bones)of all their early stuff from tod terry,
lenny d,bonesmusto,very nice
another early uk one (89)is from Iradial's Aqua Regia- Aquanosolo

as for actual detroit stuff, only ones i have
K Larkin - wonderin(freeb with warp lp)
paperclip ppl -throwopen 7001
dopplereffekt -bbicwnnmdx1
acid pimp - just call me dady chesire
dan curtin - matter of sound met 07140
fuse -overdrive +8019 flexi
there was another 7 i think, by Gerald of dopplerfx under a diffrent
name(bmg sold me that one when he worked in RT so he should know),i cant
rmmbr what it was called and i ended up swapin
this with somebody
also on a detroit label Pulsar Records , midwest artist
Laura Grab - dox 006
talking about midwest you have 7 from both leading labels there
Analoge Drop Bass Network, but after the Delta 9 coment in
previous post i'll skip them!
back to Europe, leading the way in my ltle 7 crate are the guys
from Den Haag,my favourite must be a black label,no title thingie
were sombody(ference) keep repeating destroying my brain
in the matrix # mzo 1781 . Another favourite is: Unit Moebius -
acid planet 1(this one has a track b2,that always remind me of
the 1st drumcode rekid without the compression) . There's also
Acid Planet #2 by BS1 , then there's this fast electro 7 on green
vinyl with the info being ASBEST 001
best looking one:) is a double 7 by Beverly Hills 808303 v's Hott
on Viewlexx , one green ,one pink vinyl
from Austria i got 2 titles,first one on Cheap(freeb with Cheap13)
i think it's by Pulsinger ,another one was by Putaznick on spr 100107
Switzerland i have 2 both by dj Sid,1st one on white vinyl(mental
Groove records) a nice dbx like cut called bootslipglosss
other one is a flexi
C Lekebusch had a 7(as Magenta) on Experimental ex30
Thomas Heckman had a brliant, very D May like 7 as Drax on
Trope 002,defintly the best thing he has ever done, you simply
would not believe that it's him , another good German one is
by Vermona on white vinyl(toktok Robotnik 003) again very dbx'ish
on white vinyl
from the uk you have a b12don lite one as Substance on Ulr
S O'salivan on Green 003 ,Railway Raver-acid4the 90's(freeb with
his Rephlex lp),Counterattack - we can (Counterattack)
Arovane(Greece??) had 2 lately etc etcetc

wasnt mike inc's kreisel series on 7

yes,but alot of them are represes for old stuff,so if you have a large
Ink collection beware, you might come homerealise you already
have this ;)

mask100-500 was that on 7

boards of canada - Aquarious on skam

Saw Damon at the weekly Staple in San Francisco last Friday night.
He's not flashy as a DJ (fine by me, actually), but played great stuff
including quite a few off Synewave and other NY labels, finishing
out with Star Dancer (yells and hands in the air from a not-very-hands-
in-the-air-type-of-crowd) and one of his own.

If he's in Detroit for the festival, I'd suggest Damon be invited to play
at the 313 party. I
'm trying not to open a huge can of worms by starting some let's
invite everyone we like to play thing, but I hope there would be
agreement on his dedication to putting out high-quality music, both his
own and others, at Experimental, Synewave and elsewhere over the
years. And, of course, I liked his set a lot :)

I wonder if someone could shed any light on this one:

Every time I've ordered stuff from the US, I get a hefty COD fee on it's

If so - how come I don't get charged when I order stuff from Germany?
I'll already have paid PP to the store on my card, so what does that cover?

Yes - the only way to avoid it is for the sender to fill in the
customs form saying it's free promotional merchandise with zero
commercial value - it's the same with sending stuff from here to the
US. I think there may be a limit below which no duty is charged, but
I'm not sure what it is if this is the case. Certainly when I've
ordered from Submerge in the past I've been stung on delivery...

If so - how come I don't get charged when I order stuff from Germany?

Because Germany's in Europe - you don't have to pay import duty. CF
urban fox's recent post about the rip-off pricing of European imports.
Free trade and all that...

I'll already have paid PP to the store on my card, so what does that cover?

Basically the cost of the packaging and the store's postage costs...

Colin Dale is great, I used to listen to the Abstrakt Dance on Kiss FM in
London way back in 1989. Wish I'd known about the internet broadcasts while
they were still on but this is the first I've heard of them :(

I picked up the Outer Limits comp on Colin's Kickin records second hand the
other week, (Outer Limits was the last hour of the show which was more
experimental). It's a really good compilation:

01 - Florence - A Touch of Heaven
02 - Liner Alba - Space Travel
03 - Outlander - Aural Scent
04 - Kinesthesia - Kobal
05 - Mystic Force - Clearlight
06 - Connective Zone - Holistic Worlds
07 - The Force Dimension - 200 FA
08 - Carl Craig - No More Words
09 - Ongaku - Mihon #2
10 - Clementine - The Opening
11 - Luke Slater - Secret Garden
12 - Four Voice - The Mystery

Colin Dale is great, I used to listen to the Abstrakt Dance on Kiss FM in
London way back in 1989. Wish I'd known about the internet broadcasts
 while
they were still on but this is the first I've heard of them :(

I picked up the Outer Limits comp on Colin's Kickin records second hand
 the
other week, (Outer Limits was the last hour of the show which was more
experimental). It's a really good compilation:

 01 - Florence - A Touch of Heaven
 02 - Liner Alba - Space Travel
 03 - Outlander - Aural Scent
 04 - Kinesthesia - Kobal
 05 - Mystic Force - Clearlight
 06 - Connective Zone - Holistic Worlds
 07 - The Force Dimension - 200 FA
08 - Carl Craig - No More Words
 09 - Ongaku - Mihon #2
 10 - Clementine - The Opening
 11 - Luke Slater - Secret Garden
 12 - Four Voice - The Mystery

 Ross.

2000-03-15 Thread Andrew Duke
Speaking of Shake, he's got a 3 track ep as Da Sampla
coming out on Mike Grant's Moods Grooves imprint
in May. Called Samplaholic, the A side cut is a funky
lil' number with some juggled up rhythms, the B has a
fresh four on the floor tech house piece, and it ends with
a smooth hip hop instrumental in that Shake style. Andrew duke :)

it without sounding derivative. The flipside 'Sermon' is a pretty
straightforward groover, but with lots of quirky sounds going on. This
 one's growing on me.

hey, don't make fun of the 505.
that was my first drum machine, it came in handy as a little midi step

o.k. o.k. o.k. since i got 1 million posts regarding my peas and the 505
comment. I got to say, its not a bad machine, I just rather throw my peas
at the wall then use that old 505. I dont like peas, i actually rather eat
the 505 but the hats are nice indeed. My first was a DR-110 and a
syntronics drum toy, guess i was spoiled.

2000-03-15 Thread Israel Vines
Was anyone as disappointed as I was at Jeff Mills' set at Twilo this
past weekend? It was so different than the other two times I've
seen him- it seemed like he was just spinning other people's records
haphazardly, there was few consistent grooves and none of what I
love most about his sets- keeping certain sounds constant while
subtely dropping out and bringing in new ones. It had none of the
intensity and intricacy I was expecting. And the Twilo vibe was as
sketchy as it's ever been, the crowd was just awful, and for some
reason the room was brighter than I've ever seen it. What went so
wrong on Friday?

maybe the performance was due to the sketchy crowd--dj's notice what
kind of crowd they're
playing for (i do, anyway)---and it gets really fucking annoying when
you realize you're

playing for a bunch of wankers.---bright rooms suck, too.

(313) Pacou/House

2000-03-15 Thread Charles Prince
'State of Mind' isn't that bad. Tresor have high standards. The dubby feel
on some of the tracks is nice, and as the latest Wire says (for what it's
worth), the track 'Fuel' sounds pretty good next to anything you want to
stack up against it. I was hoping the very minimal tech-dub track I heard
from his last Tresor 12 was going to be on it, though (title?). Wish the
rest of the album was as good as that one.

Has anyone read this book by Hillegonda C. Rietveld, 'This is Our House:
House Music, Cultural Space, and Technologies' (1998)?

Superb techno compilation.
How did Outer Limits 2 compare to this? (there was an Outer Limits
2 wasn't there?)
The Carl Craig track also later appeared on the More Songs album,
I think it's the track called Suspiria there.
Love that track - so moody!

I have #2 . Good tracks but the mixing isn't that great.

1. Ravers Suck Our Sound (Carl Craig mix)-La Funk Mob (MoWax)
2. Visine-Motorbass (Motorbass)
3. Outernational Wah-Airgoose (DNG)
4. Jam the Box-Carl Craig (RS)
5. Probe One (Medic Vibe mix)-The Vibe (Subwoofer)
6. Jerome-Norma G (Urban Sound of Amsterdam)
7. Midnight Express-Boo Williams (Relief)
8. Enter the Dragon-Tim Harper (Relief)
9. Greengirl-Dan Curtain (Sublime)
10. Losing Control (Carl Craig mix)-DBX (Peacefrog)
11. Clear-Cybotron (Fantasy)
12. Subsonic Sounscape-Shiver (Dance Arena)

Anyone have Abstract Funk Theory (Logic) that he just released?

RE: (313) I miss Colin Dales Abstrakt Dance

2000-03-15 Thread Nick Craddock

Yeah - I picked up Colin's 'Abstract Funk Theory' compilation.
It's pretty nice - in a kinda melodic tech-housey/electro vane.
The Ian O'Brien track (Mad Mike Disease) is wicked, as are contributions
from Kevin Yost, Vince Watson - in fact they're all good apart from one
erm it's called 'firefly' or something and it's really cheesy - quite
bemusing how someone with usually impeccable taste put it on there in the
first place.

I liked the 'Mutant Disco' compilation a lot (actually more), but in
comparison, the material on that was a lot more raw - the tracks on 'AFT'
are really polished sounding, production-wise.

I saw Colin DJ last Wednesday at Electrocuted in Brixton. He played a mainly
electro set (H - I wonder why) but managed to work in Fix - 'Flash', and
'Blue Monday'. He also dropped that It's The Weekend.. track from the
Direct Beat compilation that someone was slating on here a few months back.
Incidentally, I think it's a great track. even on a Wednesday :-)

With regards to his mixing - He ain't a hot shot DJ technically, but as with
many, his track selection's what makes it - as you'll appreciate from his
radio shows. London's airwaves are certainly a poorer place without the man
Dale

Yeah, I've got it here - I used it for a big essay I did at uni. It's
a very 'academic' book if you know what I mean, nothing like Simon
Reynolds or Dan Sicko's books. But it's an interesting read.
Hillegonda may be on the list in fact, she asked me about it a while
