Re: [313] Rick Wade (was Alan Oldham comics...etc,etc)
I'm seeing a hybrid of Narc (member that one!?) and the Wu Tang game. Like Narc you'd have to destroy the evil big boss man, in this case Sony Records execs, and like the Wu game you'd get to choose between the various UR characters. Maybe even in 'special' mode you could choose the vague characters of Drexciya! Other characters could be the Burden brothers (like Double Dragon!!) >> And also from the same book, it seems Cybotron (Rick Davies + Juan Atkins) was a lot anterior to the May and Saunderson releases << The Cybotron releases came out ages before the term "techno" was around! Clear and later Techno City first appeared over here on the early Streetsounds Electro series which were released in 1983-4, and I put them in my "electro" box without question! Techno started to appear over here about 1987-8 as acid house started to burn out through the media furore! BABY DIDDY

Subject: Re: Johanna Thomson-progress
I did a big deal with Johanna a few months back and everything went through okay, despite being a six weeks delay. However it sounds like there are quite a few people are owed stuff they paid for several months back. >From what I gathered at the time, she was planning to emigrate very soon after I received my parcel, which was the end of March, meaning that she is probably not in the UK, or as Jim Profitt has just received a parcel, she has possibly just returned to visit family or friends - I think this follows since he received an e-mail "apology" a week beforehand, when she would have been able to access her e-mail again. It may very well be that she "bit off more than she can chew" in selling so many records. When I was in a similar position a couple of years back it was a nightmare trying to keep track of who had what, trying to find packaging, keeping in check who had paid and so on (with apparent deadlines overhead!). I would think that it is quite possible to track where she is, so If any of you still after stuff want to give me a shout I'll see what we can do about locating her. And Johanna, if you are out there get in touch and let us know what is going on. People will definitely bitch at you, but I'm sure they will be a little more understanding if they know that they will see there records some time in the future! BABY DIDDY

What's the correlation actually - i) shared love of bass heavy and delayed fx music ii) extremely high quality herbals, iii) both or iv) other One can definitely hear the strong influences of Perry and Tubby in the records of Basic Channel, Chain Reaction, ~Scape, DIN, Rhythm &Sound/Tikiman/ Main St. Certainly I wouldn't go as far to say that Berlin has shared weather patterns with Jamaica- or is it some other unperceived metaphysical connection? Re: [313] Rick Wade/the deep end
I've had similar experiences with house music DJs both big and small. One of the only guys I've heard put deepness into a house set was Josh Wink. My experience is that, generally in the US, people feel that the real deep stuff is for late night sets from 4 to 6am for smaller crowds and sofa listening. Everybody wants to "pump up the crowd", as Norman Cook told me once "Play Up, Up, Up". Apparently in Finland deep emotinal house (ie Svek, P Town Sounds, Pagan, Plastic City, etc) is what's played in all the house clubs. Anyone from Finland or somewhere where the deep sound rules the floor? Care to tell us about it? they play deep house in washington dc and baltimore... BIG time... and i certainly wouldn't call svek and plastic city deep house... i'm talking about yellorange, dancetrax, 95 north, etc... later...

Re: [313] Rick Wade/the deep end
Plastic City is from Germany, and has a division in New York. Pagan is based in London, and is affiliated with Terry Francis. As deep goes, though, its not particularly deep when you consider the deep house/ garage scene, here in NYC. Wave Records, Spiritual Life, Ibidan Records, Nightgrooves, etc... In some NYC clubs (Body and Soul, Shelter, Hamsa, Bang the Party, etc..) this stuff is played exclusively, and not at 4am. Actually, the old habit of getting deep around 4-6am is a lost one (unfortunately). Nowadays, at big clubs people get REALLY hard at 4am, to keep the tweakers gyrating. e FRED MCMURRY wrote: > Apparently in Finland deep emotinal house (ie Svek, P Town Sounds, Pagan, > Plastic City, etc) is what's played in all the house clubs. [313] Rick Wade/the deep end
What is it with these dj's who play such different music to what they produce? I had similar experiences with Stacey Pullen and Derrick May. It seems like they don't trust the crowd will get the deep and challenging tunes, and instead stick with safe and easy discoloops. When I see someone like Derrick Carter that's what I expect; but with the Detroit dj's I expect more. And I'm not just whinging, because I have definitely been treated to the pure and true stuff before: Jeff Mills and Claude Young come to mind. visiting detroit this weekend
I'm coming to Detroit friday night or saturday. As I would much rather spend money on taking a host out to dinner than paying a hotel, if anyone has a floor I can sleep on, please drop me a line. I'm coming up to take my son out to the de la soul show sunday. If anyone has a house party I can spin at saturday night, I'll bring my record box ;-) kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix

Since there doesn't seem to be a KDJ discography extant anywhere on the web, and I think one would be very useful, I'm trying to assemble one. I don't, however, have close to all his 12"s. So I need some 313 experts to assist. What I have is below. Please correct any mistakes in track listings, catalog #'s, year of release dates, etc. and especially tell me any Moodymann releases I don't have. I haven't listed any remixes or compilation appearances yet. Do these KDJ label releases exist? KDJ 001 (is this "Moody Trax"?), KDJ 002, KDJ 011, KDJ 014, KDJ 016, KDJ 20 and KDJ 24. Re: [313] Nighttime World Volume 2
From: Neil Wallace <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [313] Nighttime World Volume 2 > This is an amazing release. Beautiful, soulful techno, mixing classical > Detroit techno with what sounds like live instruments Yeah? you think i think it sounds like bad synth imitations of live instruments (particularly (i think) track 3 - "hi-tech muzak" anyone?) Yeah but its always pretty obvious that they're synthesised versions of live instruments which is why I made the "with what sounds like live instruments" statement. I agree they sound synthesised but I like that synthetic quality. It sounds like he's using old Roland (D-50) and Yamaha (DX/SY series) sounds to try and sound like live instruments. Which, if you were genuinely trying to make synthesiser music sound 'live' nowadays, is almost laughable, as the modern/current synths can do it so much better. Its the old techno trick of using outdated but perfectly good equipment to do the job. I'm typing this and I bet Rob's actually got a studio full of new Korg gear :) Anyway I dig the sounds and I also dig the way they're used in the tracks but as always YMMV :) > yet it all has that > sequenced attention to detail that's on every Rob Hood release. Fair enough, there is nowt wrong with the sequencing, but those noises! What I liked about it was that rather than the analogue pulses and 'Moveable Parts' sounds he regularly uses, this featured live sounding instruments but still with that tightness that the 'Moveable Parts' stuff has. || [CiM] || [EMAIL PROTECTED] || [EMAIL PROTECTED] Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
RE: [313] share...vari
as far as I've gathered from Techno Rebels, Sharevari was released almost as a joke, about at the same time as the Cybotron release, and nobody remembers exactly which came first, so both are regarded as the first techno songS... And also from the same book, it seems Cybotron (Rick Davies + Juan Atkins) was a lot anterior to the May and Saunderson releases Gwendal > -Original Message- > From: Christos Michalakis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Thursday, July 13, 2000 5:49 PM > To: 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: [313] share...vari > > > I understand that often times "sharevari" is often stated as > the "first" > detroit techno song. I understand that often times "sharevari" is often stated as the "first" detroit techno song. I know it was recorded in 1981, about a year before the first Cybotron release. My question is, is it accurate to call it the first "techno" song? More importantly, what ever happened to "a number of names?" Did they put out many more tracks? I am curious because that is one of my favroite tracks, but I was also under the impression that techno began with "the 3 guys from Belleville" story. Re: [313] Rick Wade (was Alan Oldham comics...etc,etc)
Fair enough. I respect Rick Wade's right to play what he likes and the music he was playing on the night I saw him wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. The thing that struck me, though, with him and the others I mentioned, is the disparity between what they produce and what they play. I would have thought that what freaked Rick Wade was music similar to the stuff he produces. And he really wasn't playing that. It was like he was playing music he thought the crowd would appreciate. But maybe you're right, and actually he likes the filtered disco loops as much as (or more) than the deeper house but given there's such a glut of the looptracks doesn't see it necessary to make those tracks himself. Thank christ I say. AeOtaku wrote: I heard from all of you at one point or another that Johanna Thomson owed you some records. As it stands she owes me $600 in records and has not written me back in a very long time, and my records (which by my calculations probably should've been here some weeks ago) have not arrived. Having done two prior deals with Johanna I will say I have been unsatisifed but I do not feel she is out to intentionally rip >people off. Yes, I brought this topic up in the first place, about not gettin' my records, and about a week ago I reported having received an apology e-mail from her. It was not fake, I GOT MY RECORDS YESTERDAY! She had paid for the records to be delivered straight to my front door, without extra charge, and that's what happened. Everything was fine, all the records were there except there was one "wrong" record (Warehouse 002 instead of 001) in the pile. All the records were in good condition. No extra info about this "delay" business, no explanations. Nothing. I don't know why she hasn't mailed you yet. I know how pissed you feel because of this B.S., money lost and you feel totally suckered. When I got my records I wondered why she has to do this "business" this way. I mean all the records were in top shape and I got exactly what I wanted (except for that one record), so why to do this in such a shady manner, when you could do everything OK and know that people are talking good about you instead cursing your name. Even though I got the records, this whole episode left some "brown taste" in my mouth, if you pardon the expression, but that's how I feel, a little distrust... I write you all because I wonder if you have any ideas >as to how we can get in touch with this Johanna Thomson and >get our money or our records. Has anyone suceeded in >calling her? New Yawk New Yawk, what a wonderful town - but for 313?
Hey kids ... In the further adventures of the Techno Tourist (West Coast contingent), I'm off to New York City next week for MacWorld Expo NY at the Javits Center. I'll be there from about 9 PM Tuesday night (18th) until about 4-ish or so on Sunday afternoon (23rd). If anyone has any suggestions for music to search out on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights, I'm all ears. (Mmmm ... Friday night at Twilo, perhaps?) If any of the NYC 313 posse wants to meet up, drop me a line. I'll be cell phone enabled (not sure of where I'm staying quite yet, sorting through several hotel possibilities at the moment - currently leaning towards a place at Park Avenue and 29th St.). Sell it to Nintendo for the 64, or Sega for the Dreamcast, its their ultimate chance to bash on their main rival, it could be based around UR's battles with Sony (responsible for playstation of course) and allow the player to beat the crap out of fat record execs and the like. The various UR artists definately have video game friendly names, and the soundtrack would be UR throughout of course, however, if you lose the game, the gameover music could be the ripoff trance version of Knights of the Jaguar! While I doubt it will ever happen, its not that ridiculously far fetched of an idea, the Wu-Tang Clan have their own fighting game out for playstation, and its actually quite good. I wish I was a brilliant programmer, and I'd make it happen! Saying that, I doubt UR would be very interested in dealing with big video game companys and the like... Aaron

This provides the opportunity to incorporate the music with the characters, and... well... it would be cool ;`) I thought I would just use this as a segway into what I was going to post anyway. That is, Rick Wade was here last weekend and appeared on radio a few times, where he mentioned that he is working on a videogame with a workmate at Ford, something in a "Street Fighter" style. He's also writing a book (not music related). Interesting guy, seems to have a hand in many different projects. I laughed my ass off at hearing Rick's anecdote of how he first came into contact with Theo Parrish, when Theo was unknown and went into Recordtime where Rick was working (Theo with dreadlocks, baggy clothes, old boots and mouthing off "I want some house" like a "fool"), and how Rick subsequently came to hear a mixtape of Theo's which blew him away. Damn that was funny, anyone else hear this? Rick subsequently blew me away that night - best set of house I've heard in a long, long time. I've read Energy Flash as well, and while it did cover near enough all of the electronic music explosion, I thought it had quite a few negative points to go with it. For one thing, as it attempts to incorporate just about everything, there is lots of stuff missing, although I suppose thats gonna be obvious. I thought it was a bit unfortunate though that he covered it from such a "rave" standpoint, and attempts to explain the twists and turns of just about every genre through patterns (real or not) in drug use amongst the supporters of the music. And I guess my main problem was the fact that Reynolds is obviously pretty biased in terms of what he thinks is good and what he thinks isn't. Obviously he is going to have his likes and dislikes, but I thought they were just a little to evident. The guy is obviously a hardcore nut, which is fair enough, but he went a bit far at times. Detroit got a bit of a slagging in fact, as did the whole ambient thing, basically anything that was bordering on art as opposed to just good ol hands in the air rave music had some sticks poked at it. I would still reccomend it, but only if you want to know a little bit about everything, rather than alot about any one thing in particular. If its just Detroit techno you are interested in, approach with caution, as there are only a few chapters devoted solely to Detroit. The initial few cover the start of the whole thing (May, Saunderson, Atkins, etc...), and midway through there is a fairly small chapter about all the newer stuff (UR, Mills, Hawtin, etc...) but thats about it really. Nonetheless though, its a decent read. Aaron
Re: [313] techno quote - who said it?
The quote is something like that (can't remember exactly but that's real close) but it was Jeff Mills who said it. That I know for sure. Re: [313] techno quote - who said it?
Sounds very like Jeff Mills as it's consistent with his views expressed in various interviews. >anybody have their librarian's hat on? Re: [313] UR in OZ
Rolando (I believe it's just Rolando) is touring in August. Sydney on the 11th, Melbourne on the 18th, also in Brisbane, but not too sure of the dates there.
