OT: November Events in the UK and Paris???
Sorry to waste the bandwidth. I'm sure I'll never hear the end of this... Please reply in private. Thanks. I'll be in the UK from whenever I decide to leave Belgium after I Love Techno on the 11th and get done in Paris until the 26th of November. So I'll probably hit the UK around the 15th. I've had a number of places recommended already, so I'm hoping people in the UK can let me know the haps during that time so I can figure out when to go to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberbeen, or the Manchester-Leeds-Sheffield area. I've never been to Glasgow or Aberdeen so those are pretty near the tops of my list. Home base will be in London where my Mom lives, so I'll be spending the majority of my time there. These are some of the places I've had recommended so far, some with hesitancy: The End Fabric Sub Club Pure Rub-A-Dub It probably goes without saying that I hope to avoid cheesy music, but I can handle a cheesy crowd. That doesn't bother me if the music's good. And if anyone know of things to do in Paris from the 12th - 14th, and beyond that if the event is worth a trip back down there, that'd be great too. But it was a jaw-dropping stew of hard, almost distorted crunchy hip-hop drums, in perfect freestyle tempo, but accented with repetitive hiccuping stabs and samples. Watch this man. The Pubahs also dropped some new gems. Doc Toefinger has been working on channeling the spirit of Doc Funkenstein, with great success. When something can become a hit by accident and not because off a smart mediaplan, why not? Underground does not mean it's forbidden to sell records. Be honest you aim to reach a lot of people, otherwise you have to make music at home and let only your friends listen to it. Or distribute your song trough internet channels only. JayCee. this, but this music is called underground for a reason, and that's to keep it OFF the mainstream channels... any kind of music that blows up generally loses its quality. putting on flameproof suit now... I would disagree. Its my feeling that underground just happens to exist as part of how the music was developed. To create music just to be underground seems kind of reactionary, doing the opposite of what you think the mainstream wants. Ignore mainstream, and if something you do happens to get picked up great! Its when music is MADE for the masses that it loses quality, the only way to please everyone is to not say anything, and thats what music made for mainstream tries to do. case in point, rap. i used to love a lot of the rap that came out (Wu Tang, Outkast, Death Row, etc.). rap started blowing up REAL good with No Limit Records, the ultimate in selling out what rap is all about. think about it. There is a lot of good hip-hop out there, not sure if you make a distinction between that and rap, some do, some don't. BUT it still exists, and its still changing. You can't look at the mainstream portion of a genre and think its a direct reflection of the entire thing. saturation of public channels makes people sick of the music. i hope so, i honestly do. I want to see everyone so sick of the music thats out there now that they actually start making something better. exactly what will happen to most true future fans of the underground sound. if there is an underground sound then it isn't too diverse or subversive is it? thanks micah
Surgeon - ``Body Request'' (DTRLP1)
Hullo All, I just received my copy of Surgeon's ``Body Request'' album - his first on his own Dynamic Tension imprint. The album starts off with ``Hunger'', a foray into ``Red Two''-ish Clarkean techno with clinks and clonks thrown in for good measure. ``Setting The Scene'' begins with a clinging percussions and a hard beat, gaining momentum and reverb as the track progresses (reminding me somewhat of Beaumont Hannant's remix of Autechre's ``Basscadet'' - but the comparison is a bit shaky). From somewhere out comes the bell/string background, fading in and out of focus under the relentless beat and percussions. ``Fight Or Flight'' is very reminiscent of Surgeon's earlier work on Dynamic Tension - furiously repetitive percussions over a booming bass drum and a variety of shakers and hihats. A few detuned bellstrings in the background - similar to ``Setting The Scene'' but shorter and only momentary. ``Discipline'' lashes out hard and sudden with a bouncy percussive melody line, escalating to another furious in-and-out-fading hihat/shaker/snare workout over a booming bassline. ``Instinct'' is another tapping detroit repeating chord track with a rather interesting overlaid syncopated rhythm. Not a lot of variation here, nevertheless a good track with a snappish bassline. ``Stringent'' is very similar to ``Discipline'' - a bouncing percussive melody over a repetitive square bassline. Nothing new here. ``Sleep (Ultra Violet)'' is the definite high point of the album - starting off with a couple of minutes of buildup drums and percussions (but with that familiar Surgeon touch - very loose and open). The a string layer is added - just two chords repeating over and over - very similar to Claude Young's ``Angel'' on his third release on Deta or Ruskin's ``Prevention Beyond Cause'' on Blueprint. The strings fade out but then fade back in during a break from whence the track continues to its inevitable end - a symphonic chaos of strings and reverb and noise. These were my first impressions as I was listening to the album, so take everything with a grain of salt - I think all Surgeon releases require more than one listen-to before all the nuances become apparent. All in all, a very good package. A tad too level and unsurprising when compared to Surgeon's latest work on Counterbalance, but nevertheless worth buying if you're into Surgeon, Ruskin, Ho and the like. DTRLP1 (Dynamic Tension [UK], 2xLP, 2000) Surgeon (Anthony Child) ``Body Request'' A1 ``Hunger'' A2 ``Setting The Scene'' B1 ``Fight Or Flight'' B2 ``Discipline'' C1 ``Instinct'' C2 ``Stringent'' D1 ``Sleep (Ultra Violet)'' If anyone knows if the CD has more tracks, let me know. hi Nick, after reading my post, i disagree with most of what i said too... i wish i could take it back, but too many people have read it and responded to it, oh well. i guess what i meant to say was i just didn't want to see too many of the 'wrong' fans in this... i think one of the coolest things about going to a good techno party or even a good techno club is that the majority of the people understand it's about the music, and not the glory/image/popularity. the majority of people who listen to underground music have this appreciation for the music like no other. i think Jaguar has the huge potential to bring new listeners in of all different backgrounds and musical tastes, it has something to satisfy everybody. i don't think it will necessarily be a bad thing to show it on TV, but i also don't think it will necessarily be a bad thing for it NOT to show on TV. i guess that was more of what i was trying to say. I picked up a D record after meeting the owner (Rexx aka XXX) at Threads one day and checking out the label. I liked it so I bought it. KDJ Info
First of all, thanks to Stephen @ twoplayer, who has thus far managed to tolerate me, the KDJ label/Moodymann discography is up at: http://twoplayer.net/kdj And it is missing a couple remixes right now (spec. BP13, F 047, PAND 1, PAND 4), but otherwise is all I know about Mr. Dixon's records. Anyone who has info on whether or not there were white labels for 14, 16, and 25 (not a white label that just was 23/25 like the full release) or any 12s I might've missed, please give me a holler! Secondly, KDJ has a new 12 en route! KDJ 28 - one-sided - Analog Life. There were white labels handed out at shows called Analog Live b/w Rehersals 8/8/00: we can only hope the B-side is on as well (even if it sucks, because otherwise I'll be tracking down the stupid white label.) I haven't gotten Forevernevermore yet, I don't live in England, I have to wait. Is Tribute the full version of Tribute to the Soul We Lost (KDJ3)? Anyone figured out which tracks are in the medley? Winter Breeze, I hope. Does anyone know if Kenny has any other really old pre-KDJ 12s? I had never heard of the Grassroots 12 in seven years of techno collecting until about a month ago. Also, can anyone out there give me the info on KDJ 1 and KDJ 2's untitled tracks? Do any of them reappear on later releases? Is Moody Traxx the same EP as the Grassroots EP, just released by KDJ? Finally, I personally need KDJ 1, 2, 3 (first press), 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 20, and Intangible 509 (the Emotional Content 12.) I have ART CD's and 12s, Likemind/B12 12s, Plaid's rarest, the Scoobs 12 (two mixes not on Trainer), and loads more to trade if anyone can offer me those records. Peace, Matt

Mill's Live from the Liquid Room
Anyone know where I can find a copy of Mill's Live from the Liquid Room online? I've tried Submerge and some of the mainstream music outlets, no success. Thanks. @be __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Messenger - Talk while you surf! It's FREE. http://im.yahoo.com/
