RE: [313] The one hit wonders of techno/ where r they now?
Stefan Robbers is definately alive and kickin. He's got a new ep out on his own label FWD: under the pseudonym Sierra Romeo. It's deep, ambient, glitchy stuff. He also recently had an ep out on Ifach. Cheap is still around. There was an ep late last year called Hoping by Louie Austin which I belive was co-produced by Patrick - not sure if anything has been released since that. There's also the offshoot label Super Cheap. Re: [313] BC 09/suggestions
Phylyps trak II is definitely my favorite Basic Channel release, although they are all - for the most part - variations on a similar theme (the other one you heard might have been a Jeff Mills remix?). I'd say that you can't go wrong in picking up any (or indeed all) of the Basic Channel tracks you can find... Other labels/projects related to Basic Channel (either labels published by Basic Channel Publishing or BC related projects) Chain Reaction (this label that took over when Basic Channel ended) M (I'm not sure if this constitutes a label in it's own right, or if it's more of a project on Chain Reaction) Burial Mix Imbalance Computer Music Main Street Records Rhythm Sound (label and project) Quadrant Din A few more labels that do that minimal techno and house thing: M-Plant Accelerate Deepchord Profan (particularly for the Studio1 EPs) Force Tracks Playhouse Max - Ernst You'll probably get some better replies from others on the list. I really like this kind of stuff, but pay less attention than I should to who makes it and how the labels are interconnected. The 'M' series on Chain Reaction / M is definitely worth investigating (M4 is a particular favorite). Some of Marco Carola's stuff has that minimal dub sound, as do a lot of Gaz Varley (G-Man) releases. None of them quite as stripped down / experimental as the Basic Channel related stuff though. - Original Message - From: Scotto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Monday, April 09, 2001 10:10 PM Subject: [313] BC 09/suggestions I was woundering if anyone could suggest other BC records that are in the vien of this one. both tracks are really good. vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are.
I like mp3 cds. You have 10+ hours of music on one disk. I'm all for massive amounts of information in a small package. Vinyl is big and clunky, it wears out and you can't store too much on a slab of plastic. However for DJs, it (vinyl) may be great, but not for me. (Sidenote: I wish people would start releasing more stuff in a digital format. That way, I could compile it into some long mp3 cds.) Anyway I have an mp3 cd that has the following albums on it: Claude Young - Soft Thru Vainqueur - Elevations Surgeon - Force + Form Aril Brika - Deeparture in Time Infinity - Skynet Transmat - Time:Space Deep Chord Maurizio Derrick May - Innovator . I think it's pretty cool. The albums are stored neatly in directories and each song is labeled (used MusicMatch to encode, it also did most of the naming for me). I also have mp3 cds that have full 2 hour sets from Claude Young, Surgeon, Marco Carola, etc. You can't get this from cd or vinyl. This is where it's at now. But we need to get yet another format / or another compression scheme that will allow for more and higher quality recordings on a cd sized platform. One that comes to mind is DVD Audio..., (maybe vqf for compression???) Finally, I listen to these mp3 cds with a portable player (Rio Volt). Many car audio manufacturers are starting to release in-dash mp3 cd / cd players. I was looking at the Kenwood 8017. But my local stereo shop doesn't have it in yet since it just came out. Anyway, imagine driving for 10+ hours and not worry about changing the disk. I could drive to Denver on 1 cd! Is anyone as excited about this stuff as I am? Just wondering.. / resume your activities. meta elpH __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

[EMAIL PROTECTED]: there´s more to vinyl than just the soundquality, keep listening to our stuff and find out..i don´t release much stuff on cd, otherwise u could hear the difference...there can b so much more sub and spatial highs because of needle resonance and stuff... True, vinyl -- or at least new vinyl -- has higher audio dynamics than CD, but then these enhancements can only be realized with a proper (and more importantly, properly _tuned_) PA. Any other differences between vinyl and CD are due to mastering; processes which in turn can be encoded to a higher bit and frequency digitization and saved as files. So basically what I'm sayin' is that any quality that in the past was only achievable on vinyl can be done with digital; it just costs more to reproduce and play. This is the limiting factor of the moment but we all understand how these are only temporary obstacles. - Craig ps - systems like FinalScratch aren't limited to MP3, but can play WAV or AIFFs at any fidelity you choose

Pete Tong. It was recorded the previous weekend @ Red no.5 (?) in Chicago. It was an interesting mix from Carter. When I first turned the radio on I had no idea it was him playing. There seemed to be a couple of R B influenced tracks and one that sounded like speed garage but was still quite good. I was surprised also by what I heard from Tong. It didn't actually sound too bad! I think he tried to carry on his set in the Carter style. The night's @ The End with Derrick Carter DJ Sneak were brilliant, always a really good party atmosphere. Sneak especially would always pull out some remix of an eighties record that you haven't heard for ages and had forgotton about. One time they were playing back to back which doesn't happen often at clubs in London! I think that's why it was refreshing to have a night that wasn't too serious where the DJs could just play what they want. It was also good to see Derrick Carter dancing among the crowd, Sneak smoking the whole place out (you couldn't hide from that bud!), Armand Van Helden dancing among the crowd, Sasha (dancing I mean!!), head bloke from Cream ... it's all coming back to me now! :o) GG

Same goes for me - bought a DVD player that reads MP3 CDs + have been owning a Lyra (1 hour of music) for more than one year now... Doesn't prevent me from still buying CDs to get a really good sound... RE: [313] But what if vinyl was redundant?
It would be interesting to see what happened if labels released a full vinyl version with packaging etc. and a lower priced 'just the mp3s' option. This was done last year with Dave Clarke's 'before I was so rudely interrupted' track. 'Released' as an MP3 by iCrunch some time before it was issued on vinyl. http://www.crunch.co.uk/ Yeah I know :) maybe im not getting my point over well, its only in Lieu of technology like Finalscratch that actually makes this act relevant or 'equal' to releasing the tracks on vinyl. off topic, UK 313'ers only
I'll apologise right now for this one, total waste of band-width and only applicable to uk 313'ers, but I think eveyone can see the humour in this. As some of you may know there is a census coming around on August the 7th [UK Only]. For those who don't know, a census is where the government collates general information about its residents (number of people living in your house, religion, etc) If there are enough people, who put down a religion that isn't mentioned on the census form it becomes a fully recognised and legal religion. It usually takes about 10,000 people to nominate the same religion. It is for this reason that it has been suggested that anyone who does not have a dominant religion to put Jedi as their religion. Send this on to all your friends and tell them to put down Jedi on their census form. And remember ..If you are a member of the Jedi religion then you are by default a 'Jedi Knight'. So if this has been your dream since you were 4 years old. Do it because you love Star Wars, If not... then just do it to annoy people. May the Force be with you! jason

Up until about a month ago I was very happy with my relationship with mp3.com. I'm not as happy anymore. I moved all of my mp3s to ampcast - but I planned on maintaining the 313 station at mp3.com for the list. Unfortunately, when I asked mp3.com to delete my files last week, they also deleted my ability to administer the station. Wraith just asked me to add some of his tracks last week, and when I tried to add them last night I realized I couldn't log into anything anymore. This is odd because the station is still up and running, but no one can make changes to it. I'm not sure why they did this. My songs and the station were two distinct administrative functions so they shouldn't have deleted both and I never requested as much. If you've ever tried to get support from mp3.com for an issue like this, you know it's a waste of time - so... this leaves us in a bit of a pickle. I encourage any listmembers who have kept their mp3 sites and will continue to keep them to contact Wraith and get a new station going. If you're kind of fed up with mp3.com, be patient for a month or so, and I promise a better option will come your way. I'll tell you more as I know more. Thanks! Billy Nasty - Help w/Interview?
I am going to partake in an interview with Billy Nasty this weekend, but, I don't know much about him aside from the fact that he spins a lot of drumcode records. Would anyone here on this list (I realize that he's not exactly a detroit-native, heh) like me to ask him some questions for them, as I will post the whole interview sometime next week. Any help would be appreciated! Erin Swenson-Healey

Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are.
I think alot of the quality of the audio goes out the window after digital quantizantion. they say it's an exacte replicas but I don't see how it can be. particular in the lower bit rates. the high end jest become swishy or staccato like. I think it's due to the fact the digital picture is very thin in the 16k and up. (but most people can not hear above 18k as an adult anyways) as with analog vinyl the signal never stops. but I don't want to start a dig/analog debate I sure that it has been play out on this list in the past. now I do know that older vinyl the highest frequency is 16.kHz 17 if the engineer is good. but in the 80's they had some more break through in riaa's curve for mastering vinyl to get a better bass response and I think they also boosted the high end up to around 18khz or 19khz? but I don't remember the audio class I had were we talked about this we pretty boring and I sometime drifted off to the innerzone. and as for mp3's the sound quality is not very good at all. unless you encode at a high bit rate and then whats the point there huge but I really don't want to go into my dislike of the audio qualities of mp3's. that debate has been played out here. And most funny part is the quality I love claps the in realaudio format I don't know why but even the 'to polished' tracks tend to sound a bit gritty and compressed. I've also heard a lot of mp3 's recordings of 12 inches and they may differ a lot ! I also love the visuel feedback in the eq in winamp a real nice welcome tool on mastering and dynamic control can also make a track nice and gritty Dj DMT - Original Message - From: Scotto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2001 9:04 PM Subject: Re: [313] vinyl: not for me; but mp3 cds are. It usually takes about 10,000 people to nominate the same religion. It is for this reason that it has been suggested that anyone who does not have a dominant religion to put Jedi as their religion. Yeah, yeah. This one did New Zealand for our census a couple of months ago. I know a few Jedi's myself. More interesting was that they removed the word Pakeha (the Maori term for white people) from the Ethnicity section, leaving pale skinned folks only the option New Zealand European, which caused a whole lot more fuss. My ancestors settled New Zealand about a year after it became a fully fledged country/colony, but I'm still bound by my (their?) European roots. Go figure...

Brinkmann\Morningstar [LONG]
This is a bit of an old thread but I never got around to responding at the time. I recommend that people check out Philip's interview with TB at: www.urbansounds.com/us_current/thumbnail/brinkmann_1.html (It inspired me). TB's Soul Center releases certainly reveal a transformational sampling ethic at work that gives rise to tracks sounding anything but weak or tired. Though a KDJ might initially wonder who in the funk this guy thinks he is, Brinkmann's stirring conviction (ably shown in his tracks in the interview), that techno represents a very spiritual thing, would surely win him over. Respect empathy mark these projects as a challenging, ritualistic honoring of Black cultural memory, a form of tribute saturated in funk--the Right\Sh*t. As others like Philip, Tristan Matt have pointed out, this is a case involving seriously good music, with the sampling of soul classics done in a righteous, innovative spirit. Could this be the future 'sound of young America'? As TB states to Philip, there's a kind of catalytic process, something is going through you, the history behind you. This history hovers as sepia-toned presence over the second cd's ambiguous back-cover image: an apparently blood-stained hand of indeterminate color cradles a tiny dove which could be newly born, sleeping, or perhaps dead. The hand of fate saving the spirit of peace? Peace forever crushed by power/war? Oblique homage to the civil rights movement? A reminder of violence past, still to come, in various struggles? Does the photo conjure up a sense of morning or mourning? Hard to say, but extremely evocative... Still, getting back to KDJ's rather intemperate attack in his liner notes to 'Silent Introduction', I think it is virtually impossible to hear the Soul Center recordings not be struck by their strangeness. Brinkmann accentuates the auratic quality of his samples from Stax, Motown, etc., creating a distancing effect that permeates the music. This uncanny quality, a 'making strange' not really due to language differences, finds its center in the samples themselves. That's where the soul lives, nurtured by the minimal techno equivalent of a funk skeleton crew. Where does this strangeness come from? Brinkmann's recontextualization of disembodied voices sounds raises parallels with the psycho-sonic occultism of Coil. The Ester Brinkmann recordings reveal some of the same fervor for arcane exploration. 'Klick', with its percussive, malignant-sounding patterns --evoking the whirring of spirits--remains his most terrifyingly effective experiment to my ears. But the emphasis on the auditory as a threshold state of (psychic) communion achieves startling realization with the unsettled unsettling grooves of Soul Center, as well. This house is haunted, Jack. Perhaps some of the strangeness derives from the unnaturalness of the recording process itself. Brinkmann's cryptic approach to sampling ultimately has historical ties with the sepulchral character of material sound preservation (storing the dead), a practice which paradoxically has as its aim the invocation of the spirited, lifelike performance (raising the dead). In effect, sonic reproduction relies on the technological ability to (re)incarnate the absent sound-making agent in an audio format, thus generating the illusion of actual presence. When Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, these sound reproducers functioned as primitive voice samplers, talking machines, were regarded in somewhat magical terms, half-mockingly described as possessing little humans (or at least automatons), that toiled within their workings. We still refer to vinyl's 'warmth' when it comes to sonic reproduction today, though for many years this aspect was cause for suspicion; the ability to preserve 'living' spirits channel them (in mono, then in stereo), carried sinister overtones for many listeners. After Edison, recording archives rapidly filled with the songs, sounds voices of the departed, immortalized in sound form, rendered metaphorically undead in spirit, materializable out of the ether at the flick of a switch, or the drop of a needle. Any notion of 'soul' takes on extra freight in such a context; it is that which refuses to pass away, but lives on, an inspiration (or deterrent) to others. To record was is always to take a strange, even unnatural stab at immortality, to send a message into an unknowable future toward the ears of the as yet unborn. Techno finds much of its impetus here, resonates closely with Breton's maxim that the work of art is valuable only in so far as it is vibrated by the reflexes of the future. The future constantly listens in, as it were, in advance of itself. These Soul Center projects are geared towards this future in prophetic, politicized terms, as they forecast a kind of inevitable homecoming--despite the unhomely, defamiliarized feel they emit at present. Perhaps this yearning represents only a strange dream of
