RE:[313] vinyl - digital
Assuming you don't mean ones you've microwaved or baked, it would prolly have to do with the quality of the laser in it. CDRs tend not to be as reflective (at least that used to be the case) as regular CDs and don't read as easily. Not a thing for most newer players. Most, maybe. I bought a CD player specifically designed to play CDRs and CDRWs (with a co-ax out so I could copy my CDRs). It does all that..problem is sometimes it won't play commercially purchased CDs!! Reckons they're unfinalised.

Every now and then my Denon rejects a commercial CD...I tracked down an old Mellowtrons a month ago and to my chagrin it wouldn't play. Dego at DEMF2000 track ID
Haye! Can someone please ID this track for me? It's on the second Dego set on DEMF archived in the Groovetech site, and it's this song coming in at around 16:35. I got really interested in Dego after hearing him and some friends playing at The End When I went to London. They made me dance all night even though I wasn't moving :-) Now, *THAT* has some jazz to it... Some of the best music I've heard in my life, no arguments there... Oh, and I wouldn't put them in the same boat as Jazzanova, but that's an opinion... Thanks in advance. Oh, and this is surely not the last track ID I'm gonna ask from this set :-) Lay Unconditional Empowerment http://barkingcat.org/counterforce

Re: [313] BC 09/suggestions
Point taken. As I mentioned in the original message I was unclear about the connection between Chain Reaction and the various Ernestus / Von Oswald projects due to the large amount of apparently incorrect information available. My thanks to everyone that has corrected me. But if we're going to be really nitpicky about this, isn't Domina M3 (having been preceded by Ploy and Lyot and followed by M4)? Also, wasn't it a 1993 release? :-) i think this is too long ,there is no point to dig something that is long time a go clear or unclear to all of us. thank you b.

rick wade remix
hi there, Thanks to eveyone who replied to my Juan Atkins enquire, I should be able to get a copy quite easy (still watching you ani!) Looking for a remix of a rick wade track, called: Cool Out on Deep House Music ep on A Touch of Class Records. Remix has the same hook/ groove but isn't on the above ep, might be a different artist using the same sample, but I don't think so. If it helps, Carl Craig played the version I'm after on his Detroit Technology show (No. 13). And while I'm here, did anyone ever manage to get a track listing for the Common Factor Detroit Tech show, still looking for records off this unbelievable mix. thanks jason

FLTPLSTC // PRMR http://www.flatplastic.com Just a quick line, in seeing so many new names and fresh comments on the two lists, we at flatplastic thought it might be a good time to renew our mission within your minds. Flatplastic was begun on Boston's 90.3 wzbc FM, a non-commercial radio station from Boston College. There flatplasticFM represented house, dub, techno, electro and avante garde electronic music in a continuous mixshow from 11pm to 2am every saturday night for roughly 3 years, every week. Although we had an enthusiastic and commited audience, the show was only broadcast to the Boston and surrounding areas, so we gradually migrated the show onto the internet as well as on the radio. With a massive audience worldwide, music fans of these genres can enjoy broadcast quality programming, any time, through flatplastic.com. We recieve emails from all over the world every day in support of our musical mission, as well as tremendous support from the artists whose music we so passionately represent. You can expect future guests from across the map, and the inside scoop on releases you won't hear anywhere else, on or off the internet. So enjoy the music, listen to the shows, and most importantly support the artists who make this music by going out and buying your favorite releases, so they can continue to produce art thatr enhances the quality and integrity of all of our lives. Hi group. I have noticed some familiar names in this group. Maybe i can get some educated opinions as to a good way to start out in this industry. Re: Brinkmann\Morningstar
Thanks, Matt. Exactly...the Soul Center cut-up approach clearly echoes Faulkner's compelling, fractured narrative strategy in those novels, where memory shards fuse together to slice deeply lovingly into the cultural underbelly of the American South. That track you're thinking of from SC I is P/SHACK SESSION, which samples heavily from The Temptations' Psychedelic Shack. Another spine-tingler, for sure. I just pray Brinkmann keeps mining these weird scenes from inside the vinyl goldmine... Wes (You can be who you want to be; you're a million miles away from reality -- The Temps, Psychedelic Shack) On Wed, 11 Apr 2001, Matt MacQueen wrote: This is a bit of an old thread but I never got around to responding at the time. TB's Soul Center releases certainly reveal a transformational sampling ethic... nice words, cheers. For those who can't stand comparisons of music and literature, delete this post now. Personally, I can't get enough of soulcenter I and II. I've always thought of Brinkmann as the William Faulkner of dance music on vol.2. The weird dark historic edge, reminds me of the crazy stuff in _Light in August_ and _As I Lay Dying_. Also the photography on front and back of Soulcenter II is just brilliant, evokes some dark and intense inner emotions. Also how about that track, is it called FUNK SHACK or something?? I think it's the last track on Soulcenter vol.1, where a creaky door opens at the beginning of the track, and then slams shut at the end. Like you were let into some hot, house party in some weirdo backwoods southern town, where people just come to escape the flashy, glitzy nauseating clubland and into this weirder, deeper and darker smokey space, but it's still pure funk. Also I love the parallels you draw with the whole David Lynch movies, I totally see it, and had actually thought that myself before. peace -- Matt MacQueen [EMAIL PROTECTED] archived radio shows -- http://macqueen.com/radio

Re: [313] Industry Advice...
What do I need to do in order to put my stuff on vinyl? How do I get it in stores? Either: 1. Have your DAT/CDR mastered (here's an article I wrote on mastering: http://www.geocities.com/tom_mf_uk/XFade/FC.htm) 2. Pay a pressing plant to press some copies. 3. Send sample copies to likely distributors and ask them if they're interested (here's an article I wrote on distribution: http://www.geocities.com/tom_mf_uk/iDJ/Distribution.htm) 4. Sign deal with distributor/s (hopefully) 5. Do some artwork etc. 6. Get as many pressed up as the distributors will take (plus a few more) send them to distributors to sell for you. 7. Wait for sales statements and, hopefully, cheques to start coming in. Or: 1. Make CDR/tape copies of your best stuff. 2. Send to likely distributors asking them if they'd be interested in a PD deal (Production Distribution): ie. they press, sell and distribute the record for you, in return for a greater cut of the revenue, but not all distributors will do this. 3. Take it from there... Or: 1. Make CDR/tape copies of your best stuff. 2. Send to record labels. 3. Wait see. Below is an article I wrote on setting up your own label, I just haven't got around to putting it on my site yet. It's aimed at a UK audience, but the principles are the same. Hope this helps, TOM *** Inside the Industry: Setting up a record label Fancy being a music industry mogul, but unsure how to go about it? iDJ looks at the do's and don'ts of setting up your own record label and takes advice from three of today's hottest independents. Why? Ah, the eternal question. Ask yourself - why do you want to set up a record label? Because you're sick of your day job in the Spam factory and you foresee endless days of liquid lunches with Brandon Block and coke-fuelled nights partying with Manumission dwarves? In which case, forget it. Most independent record labels hardly make any money, if any at all and for every Global Underground or Warp there are literally thousands of labels who have long since gone to the wall. On the other hand, if you have lots of music which you think is brilliant and deserves to be heard but you can't find anyone to put it out for you, then setting up your own label is probably the way to go. This reasoning was good enough for plenty of the best dance labels in history, so it should be good enough for you. The other reason people set up their own labels is simply to have total control. After all, if it's your label, no-one can tell you that releasing a limited edition of fifty copies with triple gatefold hemp sleeves and a free packet of crisps is out of the question, can they? This particularly applies to producers who've already had a few records out, but who weren't happy with the way they were treated by other labels. And lord knows there are plenty of them. Who? The person ideally suited to setting up a label is someone with years of industry experience, lots of contacts, masters degrees in business studies, marketing and accountancy, impeccable musical taste, buckets of enthusiasm, anal attention to detail, lots of drive and a good few thousand quid they can comfortably risk. Not much to ask, is it? That said, plenty of people with little or none of the above have successfully run labels. If you're careful, start small and follow a few basic rules, you too can be a record label boss, even if you're only selling five hundred copies a time. When starting up, the key phrase to remember is advance planning. Your aim should be to have everything in place before you release your first record. Some careful preparation now will save you a lot of grief in future. Image is everything The image of your label is vitally important - there are thousands of labels out there these days, so you need to stand out from the crowd. The starting point here is the name you will choose for your label, which must instantly encapsulate the image you want to portray. But make sure you pick a name which hasn't already been claimed - to check on this, run your ideas through a few Internet search engines. Once you've picked a name, you'll need a logo. A striking, easily identifiable logo is crucial because you want your label to sell on the strength of its name alone - your logo must become a guarantee of instant quality to record-buyers. You could pay a design company to do this for you, but most small independent labels either do their own artwork (pretty simple with today's design software) or just slip an artistically-minded friend thirty quid to do it for them. Remember that you'll need new artwork preparing for every release, so it's worth learning to do it yourself. Nowadays a website is also a prequisite for any label wanting to maintain a careful public image. Assuming you don't want anything too fancy to begin with, these don't have to cost very much and even a complete novice can design a site these days using cheap site-building software. Also, sort out an email address for your

RE: [313] distribution companies
Can anyone suggest some good record distribution companies based in the UK,but which distribute across the world and that specialise or at least have a good knowledge of techno. The two main movers are Prime (020 8601 2200) in London and Integrale (0121 550 6200) in Birmingham. Prime are the biggest independant distro in the UK to my knowledge, but Integrale are also very good, if a little understaffed. Both specialise in techno, although Prime is expanding quickly to include other styles. There is also Ideal but I know people who've stopped using them over the past couple of years
RE: [313] Industry Advice...
1. Most people I know outside of the US did it this way. It means you lose total financial control but it also means that a) i) You don't have to front up all the cash to pay for cutting, processing and pressing. ii) this also means that it's not necessary to wait months for the returns before doing the next release. They just pay for it and it comes off your account. b) you can leave a lot of the work, booking arrangements, dealing with pressing plants etc to them, leaving you a few more minutes a week to make music, when you're not at the 9 to 5. c) the distributors have a little extra incentive to sell the records. I don't know about others but my distro, Prime, don't pay less for a P+D produced record than any other. Of course, as Tom rightly says, not every distro will go for a P+D. Another problem you face is geography. I know people who run labels in the US, and they have to deal with more than one distributor. I knew a guy that dealt with over twenty in the US alone, and I only know a couple of people who only deal with one.

Dego at DEMF2000 track ID
Can someone please ID this track for me? It's on the second Dego set on DEMF archived in the Groovetech site, and it's this song coming in at around 16:35. Anyone know what the track right BEFORE this one? Wicked bassline! I THINK the track at 16:35 is by Domu (or also sounds like Total Science?) I'll check on exact title and label when I get home... excellent broken beat cut with a real synthy edge. I got really interested in Dego after hearing him and some friends playing at The End When I went to London. They made me dance all night even though I wasn't moving :-) Now, *THAT* has some jazz to it... Some of the best music I've heard in my life, no arguments there... Yup. I love how Dego and co. took elements of techno and some production techniques from dnb, instrumental hip-hop (remember Tek-9?) added some jazz flavors (like heavy Rhodes piano) to spawn an original new style that is a complete bouillabaisse of a bunch of different good beats and electronic, soulful sounds -- but doesn't really sound like other styles of dance music in particular that already exist. I think all the collaboration among those artists W. London right now of these producers is REALLY incestuous, there's like about 15 or 20 producers (and even some vocalists) that are appearing as collaborators on each other's records, labels, and starting new projects together as one-offs, etc. It's exciting to see all that synergy. Frankly, reminds me when back in Detroit all the EARLY collaborations between carl, derrick, shake, juan, kevin, claude, d-wynn, jay denham, basically the Transmat/KMS/Metroplex/Fragile family as well as UR/Axis/M-plant, people were all just really into discovering and defining a new sound. Everyone was helping each other out on productions, borrowing studios, labels, producers, remixers, etc. We're witnessing that kind of explosive team creativity growth in the broken-beat scene right now (and over the last 8 mos. or so), the ball is really rolling. A lot of the old Reinforced artists have got involved under different pseudonyms to make some really ecclectic tracks with wider influences and contributors. peace -- Matt MacQueen [EMAIL PROTECTED] archived radio shows -- http://macqueen.com/radio
