I doubt it. You'd really be surprised at how quickly most ghetto tech dj's
switch records. I used to go check out Gary Chandler when he used to spin
at The Warehouse (now Club 2000) and he would drop records at a rate of
 about 1 a minute.

I recall that it's on Peacefrog, yellow label with a frog smoking a huge
joint on the back. So it's out of print, Peacefrog's releases are usually
quite limited and I don't think they have ever re-released any vinyls,
only tracks on compillations, and even then especially on cd.

By the way, one of my favourite tracks by Landstrumm is Zebra Crossing
under the pseudonym Polaris. Don't remember the name of the EP it's on but
you might want to check it out.

It seems like some of the other rare Djax Records are
like fuggeddaboudit, though. If you missed 'em, you missed 'em.

Check used bins in *every* record shop that has them. You never know what
you'll find. Be a dust bin digger. I found several old Djax records this
 way.

yes. the original mix was much longer. he recorded it, pulled it

that really hit a dancefloor hard. I understand the
ep's were big in Detroit (I heard Mills drop the

from Berlin. Anyone have any more info?

Re: [313] DJAX/Paul Johnson

2001-05-10 Thread Richard Hester
Paul Johnson has a couple of things out on Djax, the Psycho Kong is
one, I believe Foreign Music is another (I think this one has the
original Donkey Kong track). I think he is also represented on the
Warehouse remix 2X12. All these releases represent the tracky side of
Paul Johnson, rather than the Get Get Down side. Thank God.

If you really yearn to know more about these and other releases on Djax,
the Sonic Grooves web site used to have the whole Djax catalog in their
database, and you could also go to djax.nl. For a while, Djax was one of
the few places where an aspiring (or established) Chicago artist could
get published and paid.

If I remember correctly, this was written in response
to the well publisized incident where Rich's party in

Hehehehe, I can also remember Rich saying something in
an article about undercover cops following him around
all day to see where he was going to try and set up
the party. Great investment of tax payers money

2001-05-10 Thread Mike Taylor
early records(In I believe chronological order, this is from memory, dont
sue me.)

Index ep peacefrog
M-Cap ep peacefrog
Inhabit The Machines ep peacefrog
brown by august lp peacefrog
split ep (w tobias Schmidt) saetiva
Mockba ep saetiva

The first four landstrumm records are the ones to look out for, 5 and 6 are
alright but he is starting to slip.

The 2 polaris records came out around 96-97, I am not exactly sure where
they fit into the release order...this is where I started to lose interest.

Then came the tresor material:

Tresor presents the Scandinavia sessions ep (as navario sauro sp?)
Understanding Disinformation
Bedroom and Cities
whatever came out on scandinavia...

I guess he is doing hip-hop and other stuff now, but I have not really
followed his career since bedroom and cities.

Take care,
Mike

What was the other Landstrumm release on Peacefrog after that one? Green

I recall that it's on Peacefrog, yellow label with a frog smoking a huge

usually

quite limited and I don't think they have ever re-released any vinyls,
only tracks on compillations, and even then especially on cd.

By the way, one of my favourite tracks by Landstrumm is Zebra Crossing
under the pseudonym Polaris. Don't remember the name of the EP it's on
but

you might want to check it out.

But, seriously now, I'm sure what you're saying is probably true in many

If I remember correctly, this was written in response
to the well publisized incident where Rich's party in
Windsor was stopped by the forces that be.

Hehehehe, I can also remember Rich saying something in
an article about undercover cops following him around
all day to see where he was going to try and set up
the party. Great investment of tax payers money
there.

Hmm... I don't know what IMHO stands for... and I have to say that from
what I've heard of Moroder, he's been better when he's making electronic
stuff. I love all that non-electronic disco and funk and all that, and I
think his attempts at it have been pretty bad. His soundtracks aren't too
hot either.
Ya, so even if get on the funk train is better than flashdance, it still

I beg to differ. It's a classic IMHO. Ok, so it doesn't have the 313 links
that his more electronic stuff has, but it's much better than, say, his
Knights In White Satin cover, or his Flashdance stuff (to put two
time-periods in contrast).

RE: [313] did richie's mom write this?

2001-05-10 Thread jkessler
Yeah, but that's a really interesting point actually.

Sorry for flogging a dead horse, but it's kinda ironic that about a year
ago the 'forces' were all about suppressing rave culture, now they're
letting corporations embrace the culture and use them for profit - go
figure (can you say money makes the world go round!). Sorry that just
popped in me head after reading this!

Disclaimer - I'm using the term 'rave culture' VERY loosely!
 Pieces.

The letter was originally printed in the Letters to the Editor section
of the Windsor Star. I think she wrote it in response to an
anti-rave/electronic music rampage a local politician was on as well as
 the incident with Rich's party.

The politician, MPP Sandra Pupatello, proposed an anti-rave bill in
parliament (which fizzled and died quickly). Her and her staff also at
one point told the owner of a club I was working for here in Windsor
 that

We have no problem with dancing. It's the music. It makes people do
drugs and has subliminal messages in it.

 End quote. No lie.

Theo playing that track was one of the highlights of that weekend, IMO..
Anyway, I do not know the original; I have heard it called 'peaches and
prunes' before- don't know if that's correct. I do know the mix Theo played
is an unreleased white label edit, done by Theo /or KDJ. I have seen the
record before, it has 2 tracks-- that one and an edit of Oliver Sain's
B-oo-g-i-e. The etching on the run-out says Mustang 1 on one side, and
LT1 on the other. Mastered at NSC. Hope this helps.

sorry;
 another DEMF track id:
The second part of Theo's set; about 49 mins in

Minimal twangy disco guitar, female whispering It's Magic, deep male
voice

heh heh
What's the original?

Played heavily by by Farley JMF on deephousepage sets and others from his
era, and now Theo

You know this is a good topic... I am putting a mix(amongst other goodies)
up on my site soon to give everyone a heads up for me and the DEMF. So I
record 85min at a get together at my place a few weeks ago.
Lotsa good mixes, some scratching, backspins... you know DJ energy that
you get when you play. Well I can definately hear mistakes...in my mind they
are anyways. None of my friends can hear them but you know...I'm a
little afraid to put
it up and it get ripped for whatever reason. Not by anyone on this list
but I
know others who will disect it and then post it to lists and so on and
so on.
I know it shouldn't matter but I'm trying to get gigs and you know

For example I played with a big DJ recently in TO and the questions people
asked my about him where just rude. Just a tip... don't ask musicians to
comment negatively about other musicians, its awkward and not nice. My only
comment to these inquires was At least you know it was real and there answers
were an unconvincing Ya, I guess..

So the mix thats gonna magically appear on my website is gonna be one unedited
chunk.

Whew...

Your looking at about $35 to get from Detroit Metro airport to
Downtown. Takes about 1/2 hour. But the road work on the I 94(?)

I took a cab home from downtown to my house in Redfor (20 minute drive) and the

Detroit City airport has no airlines anymore..if I remember reading
correctly. PoorAir...I mean ProAir went bankrupt plus had the FAA on
their asses for a while.

The cost from City is about 15-25 bucks and from Metro will be atleast

Thats not too bad considering gas it is like 45 minutes from downtown in
moderate traffic.

unlike the washington DC rip offs... $85 to go from downtown to BWI. bah.

Damn, y'all might as well rent cars for the amount of money you'll spend
on cabs. Depends on how long you're going to be there, bu I would say it's
well worth it. I did some research and, if I'm not mistaken, I believe I could
find decent cars for around $80-90 + tax, etc. for 4 or 5 days. It was pretty
cheap; more so than most places.

Plus, you just want to have your own ride in tha D.

The airport trip might still be expensive, but I've noticed at least
that short trips or downtown-suburb trips have gotten much cheaper in
the last 3 or 4 years with the development going on.

It used to cost something outrageous like $20 to get from downtown to
Ferndale ... now it's closer to $12.

[313] Cabs FYI

2001-05-10 Thread Alex . Lugo
For the out of towners:

Taxis are not as prevalent in Detroit as they are in most major cities (New
York, Chicago, etc.). Leave the downtown area in a cab, don't expect to
find one for the return trip. Even downtown you'll have a problem finding
one sometimes. As Jason says, if you're in a group and are planning on
hitting a lot of different places, a weekend car rental is the way to
go

 For the out of towners:

Taxis are not as prevalent in Detroit as they are in most major cities
(New
York, Chicago, etc.). Leave the downtown area in a cab, don't expect to
find one for the return trip. Even downtown you'll have a problem finding
one sometimes. As Jason says, if you're in a group and are planning on
hitting a lot of different places, a weekend car rental is the way to
 go

 Peace,
 Alex

Re: [313] BRAIN DRAIN (was: did richie's mom write this?)

2001-05-10 Thread jkessler
Yeah I'll give you that, but from what I've seen, it seems easier for
Canadians to move down to America than vice-versa. I heard from several
American people that the Canadian goverment was bustin' their balls
when they tried to move to Canada. However, I meet Canadian ex-pats
here in the states all the time who seem to have had few problems.

Any opinions on this?

The Brain Drain is a myth. How many ov you working in the USA have
ex-pat
 Canuckers inside the company?

I used to always hear about this Brain Drain (mainly from media
outlets),

2001-05-10 Thread Darren. ..

Sure, let's use my father in this f'r instance. My father routinely takes
gigs in America only after the production company's go through all the
riggaa-ma-roll (he's a musician) needed to secure a temporary greencard
allowing him to work. It ain't (isn't) easy for him, even with company's
doing legwork, AND NAFTA. I have to deal with the edginess that runs
through him over this always. Nothing is guaranteed in these cases. As for
whether it's easier for Canuckers than 'merican's to move, well, hell, what
would you do in that situation? ;o)

Damn, y'all might as well rent cars for the amount of money you'll spend
on cabs. Depends on how long you're going to be there, bu I would say it's
well worth it. I did some research and, if I'm not mistaken, I believe I
could
find decent cars for around $80-90 + tax, etc. for 4 or 5 days. It was
pretty
cheap; more so than most places.

Plus, you just want to have your own ride in tha D.

[313] Dave Clarke? -- Please ignore if you don't like rants.

2001-05-10 Thread Bulger, Tim
I heard people here talking about Dave Clarke, and I've heard him compared
to Hawtin in other circles, so I decided to give him a shot. I downloaded
'Dave Clarke - Live @ I Love Techno [Red Room]' from Napster and I would
like to know, has anyone else heard this? RANT What the hell is this guy
trying to do? Excessive use of Pioneer DJM-600 effects on cheesy default
settings, no regard whatsoever for 4/4 timing and proper breaks, and a
complete lack of song selection seemed to be the obvious problems I saw.
Hawtin could make a more entertaing show with the original RCA phonograph
and two volume controls. /RANT On the good side, he has some nice
crossfader technique once in awhile.

Sorry, I had to get this off of my chest, but if someone out there knows of
a good set by our esteemed Mr. Clarke, please clue me in.

Regards,
Tim

Just rented thru Hertz for four days at $20 per day. About $100 for the
weekend. Of course you have to be 24 or older.

Tell your friend to try priceline.com for downtown detroit. A bunch of us
got rooms there for $45 a night some @ $55 a night @ the Ren Center Marriot.
I doubt they would still do $45/$55 but tell your friend to try $60/$65
