[313] press pass problems with PCM

Oh my god. I thought I was the only one having problems. First the press
conference, then the press kit, then the preregistry, then the passes. Man,
it's frustrating.

All I get when I call is a pat message telling me to leave a message and
make sure to join [them] at the Focus DEMF 2001 for three days of fun and
dancing. FUN AND DANCING I TELL YOU. Have we not heard that phrase enough

I figured that it had something to do with an extraordinary call volume for
write-in reporters but at least honor the ones that came to the damn press
conference (and, consequently, are writing for one of the media sponsors!!)

This reminds me of when a movie comes out and there isn't an opening night

Diana got a verbal commitment from Bridget today. I can't say that is what
she gave me. She said she remembered my name and would update all of the
files...hopefully we will hear or read something from them before we show
up

at the press tent.PopCulture is probably very wary of what kind of
coverage they are going to get due to Carl's release. I am certain the
amount of traffic this issue has crated for them has certainly slowed down
their office. Do we request her imminent release due to the low % of press
passes granted 3 days before the festival start date?!?!

My personal favorite was that dude who posted a 10 pager about
boycotting DEMF because of Autechre's Cornfield album. I still
 laugh about that one...

This needs a repost. :)

Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 12:33:23 -0700 (PDT)
From: Totally 2 Step [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: 313@hyperreal.org
Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [313] Why I'm Not Going To DEMF (Autechre)

Dear 313 Friends-

I'm afraid I will not be at DEMF this year. As a matter of fact, I am
now officially boycotting it and will no longer support Carl Craig,
planet E, the Ford Motor Company, or any other individual or association
helping sponsor or organize the DEMF.

The reason for my seemingly radical stance is that Autechre will be
playing. Now, until recently, I was a very big fan of theirs, however
the controversy cam ewith the release of their new album Cornfield.
Now, being raised in the heartland of america, the Midwest as it were,
I have a strong afinity for cornfields and the earth below them. When I
first heard that the title for the new album would be Cornfield I was
very excited, Finally I thought, Autechre will be focusing on the
needs and unique experiences of the farmer! However, after several
close listens, I realized that this was not the case at all, in fact,
Autechre seem to be expliting and misappropriating farm scene culture
and ideas to make money.

As a matter of fact, Autechre's bastardization of the agricultural scene
is on par with Puff Daddy's exploitation of Grand Master Flash's The
Message. Both of these scam artists took something good and significant
and recontextualized them them into heinous consumer based exchange
entities. I'm sure Sean and Rob(ber) were sitting in their studio one
day, and said Hey, in the US they have a strong farmer community. I bet
if we made an album that appealed to them, we could make loads of cash.

It is this mentality that has infected almost each and every great
movement: Rock'n'Roll, Disco, Hip-Hop, Rave, and Agriculture. And
ultimately caused their downfall. I refuse to see the farm scene, which
I consider myself and active member of, get corrupted and commercialized
by a bunch of Englishmen... WHO AREN'T EVEN FARMERS!! This is just
unacceptable.

And that is why you won't see me at DEMF this year.

Keep it real,

t2s

I think I'm with Andrew. For some reason I never quite feel like putting
those CDs in the player and listening straight through, so I don't usually
play them much. But when I do, I'm a sucker for the Eddie Fowlkes, Stacey
Pullen (his best track IMO) and Kech Bonds. The Drexciya's awfully nice
too. I like all the tracks, with maybe only one or two exceptions. I'm just
not in the mood for it as often as, say a techno album like Metaphor.

Revisited B-12's Time Tourist the other day. Lovely stuff... Anyone care to
update me on their recent activities?

Does anyone else feel like DEMF is a starting point for something BIG? Like
big corporate labels to test and see if people will buy in to Techno as
people have bought in to Trance so they can package it and sell it to
millions as the next wave of new music. Oh well just saw something's that
made me think that.

techno anyone, or, in the jazz guide, the atrocious merging of Steve Reid,
the new age w**ker, with Steve Reid, the excellent drummer behind the
Mustevic label)? Admittedly having not seen the book yet, I'll reserve
judgement, but if it is just an exact paper version of the online guide, I'd
recommend buying a Rough Guide to techno instead - or better yet their

Since I've deleted most of my responses I've *wanted*

the office, Every one is a critic

In the future, there is a feedback button to which
you can send corrections you see on the site to-these
are read by people and (as someone who works on them)
most of the corrections are taken and put into place.
Please, feel free to use this function on the site-as
it is there for those that find it more productive to
build than to tare down.

John Bush has put years of work into this book and
taken great pride and caution in putting it together,
as AMG does with all its books...thanks for
appreciating this.

Thanks,
Diana Potts
ps.As a result of all the hoopla of this weekend,
after memorial day I will be switching my musical
focus to blue grass.

RE: [313] Ferndale Or Roseville

2001-05-24 Thread John Bush
Which is hopefully not just a cash in printed version
of the website entries like all the other AMG books?

Cash in? I suppose you're right -- companies like to make money, and the
people who work for companies appreciate being paid for their effort... In
that sense, the book is a total cash-in. But for all the people who aren't
making any extra money from this book (namely, all of our writors and
editors, most everyone associated with AMG), the only thing *we* really care
about is getting a quality product out there that people will find helpful
and make us proud to be doing what we're doing.

There *is* quite a bit of information in the book that's not available on
the website -- essays, label descriptions, book reviews, music maps, etc.
Though all of the biographies and reviews appearing in the book *are*
accessible on our website, I'm not sure we should be punished for it.
Obviously, it all comes down to a question of value -- is it worth it to
have all the information organized and presented in the most easily
browseable medium ever devised. I sort of like succumbing to the random
nature of a book, just paging around and letting my eye wander. I don't
want to shame anyone into buying a copy -- if you've *ever* been to our
website, you should be buying a copy of this book... ; -- but I think it's
comprehensive, well-done, and very fun to use. (I've dropped so much money
in the past few years based on what I've found on our website and in our
books.)

As to the factual entries, we're typically overwhelmed by all the
corrections necessary to keep a project like this error-free. I'll take
care of the Steve Reid fiasco, though -- my favorite mistaken identity is
Bill Monroe appearing on Sgt. Pepper's... ; And definitely e-mail any
other errors you see directly to me.

Holy crap, you've produced 33 cd's worth of music in three years?!
I've spent the last 6 months on one track!

I know I have a tendency to rush through tracks, but if I'm working on
music I can easily do two or three songs in a day...

A lot of it depends on how comfortable you are with your gear... A lot
of it also has to do with the fact that I will often make like 4 tracks
that are all based around the same idea but one will be jungle, one will
be twostep, one will be techno and one will just be really weird or
something to that effect... So I guess unless I wanted to tout my self
as all high-art and release concept CDs I wouldn't really release all of
them.

[313] My DEMF wish...

With only one more day till I hop a plane to Detroit, (can't believe a year has
gone by so fast) I'm looking forward to enjoying the whole weekend reguardless
of weather, politics, and advertising. Three days of good music and good people
are all I'm concerned with. Yes, the festival politics have obviously been a
roller coaster ride this year, but I hope everyone can just show up and enjoy
the music. Last year was great because everyone really connected with the
spirit of the music. I don't think that has diminished in any of us over the
course of the year. Hope to meet many of you over the course of the weekend.

The rest is just speculations, we need some facts here, take a breath and
think before acting.

Desicions with emotions are often bad acts.
After all we have the freedom do not come next year, if we are not happy.

We have to keep the soul of this festival, I do believe that we can act but
the artists must act too! have seen nothing yet from their side, maybe they
know better.there was a meeting between Detroit artists and Derrick May

His booking agent cancelled his DEMF appearence entireley only because phone
calls to the festival contacts were never returned and as a result, he had
no contract, and no flight/travel information.

btw, mark farina's off the lineup too.

Yup.

since the festival required Farina to be exclusive, he bailed. The way he
figured it, if he wasn't going to be paid, he wanted to play in detroit at
another venue this weekend AND get paid.

i believe he's playing at the Majestic with Steven Sacks on sunday.

Or is it saturday?

Hmm. Wait. ken ishii (sp) is on saturday at the majestic

Re: [313] Read the Carl Craig Link....

2001-05-24 Thread xx xx

OK whatsoever,
I've seen no difference between Ford and MTV in term of corporate/majors
companies.
MTV is either worst, I have never heard yet that Ford has refused to sell a
car to black people, but it was the case for MTV, they refuse to Broadcast a
video clip with black artists, hopefully Prince took action and since then
black artists are on MTV.That not so old it was in 1982
So I'm surprise if the main concern is to fight against the Corporate/majors
why no one sounds surprise that Carl speaks to MTV, is there no media except
MTV???

You cannot pretend to fight here and ignore there.

conference, then the press kit, then the preregistry, then the passes.
Man,
 it's frustrating.

Re: [313] MP3 to CD?

2001-05-24 Thread Dennis Donohue

.cda is the file-extension for a cd playable wave file.

Most Audio CD burning software will create a CD from .mp3 though. I know
for a fact that Adaptec easy CD 4.0+ and Nero both do.

If you need help finding these programs shoot me a mail.

Off topic but I thought I'd ask the masters:
i want to convert a file from MP3 format and burn it onto an audio CD that
will play in a standard CD player (home, car ect) . what format do I need
to

make the file in order for it to be read and played back by a CD player?

your close to right in this statement. it was not prince it was CBS and
micheal jackson. mtv refused to play black artist, cbs thrented to pull all
of it artist (and they had some really popular one at the time) if mtv did
not play a micheal jackson video I forget which one. anyone elese remember?
