DJxDJ = Daniel Miller (Mute) + Seth Hodder (NovaMute). Great DEMF set...it started slow, but REALLY hit a groove once it built up. I think a lot of people drifted off before it kicked in and missed a good thing. When the set started I was standing with Carlos S...when I saw him later he said he nearly left early, but it dropped into a very nice place when he'd almost reached the top of the ramp and he turned back. I thought that it - along with Todd Sines' set - were a few of the highlights of this year's fest. jeff ps although it has nothing to do with anything above, I was also really impressed with Sharif's set before Monolake at Detroit Contemporary last summer. I think you are referring to Mute Records founder Daniel Miller. I believe it is Daniel Miller and a partner whose name escapes me, - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] techno/jazz
I think you would enjoy the Herbie Hancock album which I haven't heard of yet but everyone seems enamoured with. LTJ Bukem has remixed a single from that album. You may like Bukem's stuff generally as he shares the same kind of cultural sensibilities, with that jazz/tech/house hybrid. Bukem is working on a remix album of Journey Inwards with some of his own heroes - though no names are being given out, my guess is that artists from Detroit, Chicago and the jazz world will be involved in that. He is also launching a new deep house label Deep Rooted, so maybe look out for those issues. I think it will be interesting. Also Dave Angel's roots are heavily steeped in jazz, so maybe his artist albums. I know his next one was gonna feature live musicians but I haven't heard anything more about this. The new Ian O'Brien album, A History of Things to Come (Peacefrog) gets my current vote for gorgeous, spicey 'future jazz' stuff in this vein. But he throws in versions of Jaco Pastorius' Teentown, and Pat Methany's A Midsummer Western Night's Dream to provide some nice historical context. Also features Kiwi Nathan Haines (flute), and Domu (drum programmer extraordinaire). On a housier tip, don't miss Aqua Bassino's Beats n' Bobs, on F Comm, recently out. Kind of like the Velvet Underground -- by the time anyone paid attention it was long since gone. mostly true -- by the time it drew critical attention -- hell, even by the time of the music institute, the youth scene -- the under-21 scene that was the audience for the sound --- had changed so much that an affinity for techno (or progressive house, or whatever) seemed almost a throwback. but Techno stopped being 'TECHNO' when it spread beyond a very exclusive scene that only really involved a few hundred people in and around Detroit. CORRECTION: Given that techno wasn't applied to the sound until '88, when it was applied specifically in order to market the sound abroad, you *should* say that Techno only *began* being techno by turning away from the scene that produced it. (it used to be known as a whole raft of things, but the most common i remember from high school circa '83-'87 was detroit house) as for the few hundred people estimate -- it's higher, but certainly not arguably larger than 20,000, unless you add in Chicago's scene and its audience for Detroit product. And even my highball figure of 20,000 (over seven years of adversity, with the sound trapped in two midwestern cities) certainly can't compare to the DEMF attendance. history, folks, history. -marc PS I've got to get off web-based terminal emulation programs. my emails *never* make it to the list! l - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] fuel to the fire
Why is it that seemingly innocuous inquiries sent to this list invariably lead to embittered polemics? I remember when this particular strain began with a simple question on my part as to the general opinions circulating on Mr. Hawtin's newest creation. Then came the inevitable Richie bashing. What is it about the gent that stirs such negative emotion? Is it that he's white or not a Detroit native or that he has gained a relatively large following outside of the techno underground thanks to numerous publications? I personally love the guy; his work touches me in a profound manner. By this I don't necessarily mean his work has changed my outlook on life, but his particular brand of techno (which I believe to be very singular) appeals to that creative, imaginative, and (dare I say) intellectual side of my being. And this doesn't even take into regard the satisfaction my rhythmic nature finds in Richie's bare bones approach to the essential beat. His work reinforces my love of techno, dammit! Anyway, without digressing extravagantly, I think the argument centered around the progression of technology as it relates to the creative process has been steered the wrong way. Too many purists IMO. Where does techno fit if technology is to be shunned and feared? (Yes, I'm well aware that the whole of this list doesn't fear technology as a primitive would fear fire.) It's all about how the technology is used and especially how the material goods of our time are directed towards an end goal of individual expression as it relates to current cultural trends and mindsets (both local and global). Art should reflect the present and not be regarded separately, for the key to its purpose lies in the questions, ruminations, ponderances, and affirmations that result from it. Plus, don't forget that technology's goal is to make life easier for us, to facilitate the tasks that we may needlessly exert our limit energies towards accomplishing. If a new piece of equipment opens doors to a whole new slate of artists who heretofore haven't possessed the means or ability (or desire or time . . .) to express themselves, all the better. The innovators will be singled out and recognized, that is a guarantee. Besides, imitation comes before innovation. I don't know my thoughts are at all cohesive or if I'm rambling, but I'm trying to cram multiple thoughts into this lunch break of mine. Time to get back to work. If I remember correctly Stairway to Headphones is a release by Wink and McBride on the Head in the Clouds label. It was also released on a 2 x 12 of remixes of Basketball Heroes called BasketBall Heroes vs. Stairway to Headphones on McBride's Communique label. So the party by the same name would probably have been thrown by McBride. I vaguely remember hearing about it as I was living in Cleveland at the time (around 95, I think). I mean, where's the TALENT in pushing some buttons, or twisting a knob? whatever happened to what a few guys, ONLY IN DETROIT, did 12 years ago, like PLAY THE DRUMS, or LEARN THE GUITAR? the funny thing about this statement is that most of the innovators from this time period in Detroit and Chicago that still have any musical standing today were playing traditional instruments before they started making dance music. Quoting Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Weird is Green Velvet's middle name, well, actually it's Alan, but ya know what I mean. ;) He is calling it techno punk. 'techno punk' wow that's a revivalist term I haven't heard since The Prodigy, Atari Teenage Riots and the movie 'Hackers'. He's already been there, his schtick is running thin. There are a lot of retro sounds in there which I kinda like. That makes two. Felix Da Housecat beat him to it with 'Silver Screen Shower Scene'. But then again everyone's been slamming the Germans for producing 80's inspired glam-tech for ever (Internation Gigolo DJ's anyone?) that is until now. La La Land is boring, to me it is the techno equivalent of D12's 'Purple Pills', another scholock production sensationalizing drug use. I can't comment about the production because I would probably really like the track if he droned on about something other than drugs. There's gotta be a million interesting stories to tell out there, that involve drugs (ie. Noosa Heads 'Mushrooms', Green Velvet 'Flash'). La La Land isn't one of them. Re: [313] fuel to the fire : was hawtin hawtin everywhere
I have to agree with you. It seems whenever a new technology is introduced, the status quo immediately feels threatened by it and does everything in its power to slag it--methodically. The funny part is that usually the bigger the stir about something new, the more you can count on it becoming an accepted new medium for creation. It happens in both the audio and visual arts. A simple example would be the camera. When the camera first came around the painters of the world united and screamed Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! All they do is press the button and the image is recorded!... Now how many people on this list believe that the camera does all of the work in the creative process of photography? Those painters were fools... Back to recent modern times. How many people here use drum machines? How many of our favorite songs use drum machines? Would our music not exist without the drum machine? But when they were first developed the 'real' musicians, who had been doing it 'the correct way' since 'back in the day' screamed Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! Just press the button and the beats just come pouring out of it! Where is the creativity in that? Is it the device, or what you do with it? Next on the electronic musical timeline: The Sampler. Oh no! Here is a piece of equipment that all you do is press record, and it allows you to replay whatever it was that you recorded, spread out across your keyboard-- including other people's music. Hell, you don't even have to program beats anymore. In fact, even the users of the drum machine, who's rhythm devices had just recently gained acceptance as a justified creative musical instrument were screaming, Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! Just press that button and it plays back whatever they recorded from somewhere else! Now, eventually everyone realized that while the P.Diddy's chose to capitalize on the misuse of the technology, the majority of sampler users were keeping it real, and expanding their creative realm the old fashioned way, through inspiration. Except, maybe by now it was 10% inspiration to 90% perspiration, compared to the old 1%-- terrible odds huh? After the sampler what happened? A sh|tload of PC's started appearing in everyone's home and software based music creation avenues soon followed. You could get a program that did almost anything, simulated analog keyboards, simulated digital keyboards, simulated drum machines, and *gasp* samplers even. This wave is very recent over the past few years, but do you think it was a smooth evolution? Absolutely not. Who screamed the loudest? Come on, fill in the blank right here ___. That's right, the owners of the samplers and drum machines. After all, they had just invested all their hard-earned money-- thousands and thousands of dollars-- into their gear, and now any kid with a home computer could jump on hotline and have a complete musical studio set up inside their PC within hours? They had just recently --finally-- been recognized as the true innovators and then the next wave comes along and threatens their livelihood. Blashpemy! That 'device' is doing all the work! Just press that button and the computer writes the entire arrangement from start to finish! Where is the creative process in that!? This is a cycle that will never end. It is human nature. The irony here is that this music was inspired by technology-- in fact, they called it Techno, and for a reason-- yet, when a new technology is developed to further the music, the former Techno 'pioneers' seem to be the first to try and hold it back, but not

Re: [313] Gettin' Wiggy Wit' It
Actually it was spelt tekno punk in Jockey Slut. That may make a difference. Funny you should mention Felix! Those albums pretty much would have been recorded at the same time. I am not sure if La La Land is actually sensationalising drug use, it's much more ambiguous, to my ears. It mixes well with Purple Pills though. Though I'm sure Mr. Velvet could tell us a fair number. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Im wanting to hear more jazz infused techno as of late...mixing live instrumentation and and techno machine driven patterns and effects. Maybe is appeals to my 'rare groove' listening side... Re: [313] fuel to the fire : was hawtin hawtin everywhere
|do you really think the people that |embrace the new tools, are simply trying to recreate |what the people with the old tools were doing 12, to |20 years ago? Absolutely not. If that were the |case, just go buy a drum set, or learn to play the |guitar, or even buy an 808 or 909 drum machine... |A 303 perhaps? I think the majority *are* trying to recreate something, particularly where electronic music is concerned. Why buy that 808/303/etc. when there's Rebirth/Reaktor/Reason? Analog Modeling Synths? Emulators for everything? You're right about people resisting new technologies, but I think it's largely a reaction to how these new technologies are perceived. In each case I think the hype reaches a point where a new innovation is elevated beyond the status of cool new instrument, to *a replacement for some other instrument*. In each case that other instrument is irreplaceable. If you want to create *original* trap-set breakbeats the only thing *to* do is learn to play drums; a drum machine or sampler just isn't the same. But, ( this is important, thanks for bearing with me) the flipside to this is that a drum machine and sampler can do things no live drummer could manage. So, yeah; let's see what these new toys can do, progress is great, but in our enthusiasm we shouldn't disrespect people by suggesting that they are somehow rendered obsolete in the process. We've only come this far by following in their footsteps... __ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo!
